Thanks. I can't take sole credit, though -- in the process I collect tidbits from SIDs, our writers and trusted fans who have seen teams play. I don't want to just scroll through a few box scores and try to write something that might not be very meaningful.

So thanks to those whose brains we picked!

Pep and the rest of the Alfred faithful.  I am going nuts in my office right now waiting for tomorrow's kickoff at beautiful and rural and in the middle of nowhere Merrill Field.  What's the buzz like in Mayberry?  Is everyone healthy this week?

Pep believes you have hit the nail on the head....there's a buzz around Mayberry. Students gathered Wednesday(?) to make posters which are now distributed among the downtown businesses.

Pep is pumped. If all goes well, Pep will have assembled probably our biggest band of the season. Peppers, in response to the unexpected opportunity for the Saxons to host in the first round, are dropping other responsibilities to play for the Saxons: "Gosh, it's a home game, I'll be there!"

Pep was chatting on Facebook last night with a Maritime fan, who's making the road trip out to Mayberry, leaving the Bronx at 5 a.m. Pep, hoping some of AU's tailgaters will oblige, offered him some Alfred tailgate grub when he arrives.

Pep has also heard there are some who are taking a pass on the game as Saturday also marks opening day of deer season. Looks like a high of 40 degrees and partly sunny (or partly cloudy) with only a 10% chance of precipitation and winds from the west 12-15 mph. Gonna be chilly....dress in layers!

Pep has been dealing with some congestion but will be good to go come game time. The flute player, who's been out for a couple weeks with an upper respiratory ailment, an injury she attributes to the Fisher game, says she is now good to go!

At least one alum will be making a trip from Rochester to add to our trumpet section that should number at least four, while Pep has also enlisted the talents of two excited students to bolster our kazoo section. Two drummers, two trombones, two flutes and our freshman tuba player destined for the Pep Band Hall of Fame round out our ensemble for Saterday.

Just got this email from the IC President (on a mass list, we're not buddies or anything):

QuoteOver the past few years, I have heard time and again from student organizations and alumni, asking why there has never been an Ithaca College mascot. Your voices have been heard! I'm pleased to announce that the College has begun the process of selecting an official mascot -- and we need your help.

We don't yet know what shape our new mascot will take -- human, animal, vegetable, mineral, or even mythological creature. But we do know that it will embody the energy, passion, and strength that is Ithaca College. Its name will be "Bomber" to represent the longstanding nickname of our athletics teams.

A formal search and selection process will begin immediately, with the goal of announcing IC's new mascot next fall. Every member of the IC community, including alumni, will be asked to provide ideas and feedback.

Soon after Thanksgiving we will start soliciting suggestions. The search process is explained in detail at www.ithaca.edu/mascot. Updates will also be posted to the site.

A mascot selection task force will be created to oversee the details of the selection process. The task force will comprise students, coaches, student-athletes, alumni, and faculty, as well as staff members from intercollegiate athletics, marketing communications, institutional advancement, web services, and student affairs and campus life.

If you have questions about this announcement, please feel free to contact Rachel Reuben, associate vice president for marketing communications, at rreuben@ithaca.edu. In addition, we welcome feedback through our website.

We're looking forward to the next era of IC pride!

At first I thought IC was succumbing to the hippies and getting rid of "Bombers," but it looks like they're just looking for a costume. So I guess we'll go down with Cornell and Stanford as far as having mascots that have nothing to do with the team's name.

Of all the things he names up there, I hope it ends up being "vegetable."

And of course, let us never forget the obviously unsatisfactory, but always entertaining, Bomberman:

And what about the Alabama Crimson Tide that use an elephant and the  Tarheels use a Ram.  I know that Ithaca doesn't need my input but my first thought was a Bulldog.

I got an email yesterday from a ... you know, I don't know if he's an Ithaca or Cortland fan ... trying to resurrect the oft-mentioned idea of playing Cortaca in the Carrier Dome with an eye on setting the Division III football attendance record and cementing the disputed "Biggest Little Game" title.

I had to tell him there was no official Division III football game attendance record. He's not dissuaded.

The list we've compiled, which is very unofficial, is in a Keith column from October.

Something about this idea annoys me. I know it would, in a way, be more practical, but it would also somehow seem so much more sterile if it were at a neutral location.

Hard to believe but IC would not be the first school with a vegetable as a mascot. I give you the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes. Google it...

I think the answer is most certainly: crow.

Then you could sing:
"If I had the wings of an eagle,
if I had the ass of a crow,
I'd fly over to Cortland,
and dlip on the bastards below!"
Check out the official card game of the AU Pep Band - Str8 Eight!

perhaps you should use this site: http://keystonemascots.com/ Whatever you come up with, it can't be as bad as the costume Union has.
