Yes, Jen Kroll is the new women's head coach at St. Lawrence. Ithaca fans may remember Kroll being there a few years back before Coach Raymond took over.
Jen Kroll was my daughter's coach at Ithaca for a year. She was very good. Dan Raymond took over and has had a lot of success too.
not sure what happened with begly. i asked a friend who works for ws, but no reply. must not have been a good parting.
on the positive side, however, the team did pick up a current WNBA player and former Stanford standout as their interim coach!!

Well, it was good while it lasted. Olympia Scott resigns as head coach of the Herons, to concentrate on her WNBA career. She will be missed, as a class act and well liked. Congrats on her WNBA championship and best wishes on her continued pro career!

Union looks down this year and Skidmore doesn't look like they have improved at all. What happen to these two programs?
Nice to see the Herons pick up their first win over Ithaca since in four years! Thought they could pull it out over Rochester after leading by eight at half time, but could not hold on! Team looks good going into the full conference schedule after the break and a trip to the west coast.
After winning two out three non-conference games on a California trip, the Herons open their conference play 2-0 over RPI and Vassar. They take on Empire 8 Elmira, before heading east to take on Skidmore and Union this weekend, Hamilton next week, and what will be a huge showdown next Friday night against St. Lawrence, who also opened 2-0.
William Smith on top of the league, tied for first with St. Lawrence, with some big games for both schools this week, with William Smith traveling to Rensselaer, and St. Lawrence traveling to Union. It could come down to the last game of the season for both teams, to see who gets the regular season title, and host the championships.
William Smith takes over first place, with their sweep this weekend, and St. Lawrence splitting. The Herons could lock up home court hosting by beating St. Lawrence this weekend in the last game. If they win Tuesday over Hamilton in their home finale, and beat Clarkson Firday, a loss would come down to a messy tiebreaker, on who would host.
Herons roll over Hamilton and need one win this weekend to clinch the #1 seed in the tourney, and host next weekend championships. Hamilton is eliminated from the tourney.

i agree...gromacki is a great coach...i don't think hamilton will do a whole lot this year, but next year when there freshman class from last year are juniors and gromacki has had a year to implement his system, style of play, and recruit the girls he wants hamilton will be a top 2 team in the league

While I'm over here, might as well contribute. Predicting LL women's basketball is usually the easiest thing in the world. Skidmore, Clarkson and Vassar are always terrible, Hamilton and RPI are always mediocre and the troika of WS, SLU and Union swap the title amongst themselves. So let's go ahead and tab the Herons to take the championship again.

The Herons lost a trio of great players last year, but return some great talent. It is too early in the year, but so far the 0-2 start should not make one panic. The team made it much further into the tournament last year than anyone felt they would, almost getting past 12th ranked Baldwin Wallace, and defeating a tough Fisher team. It is way too early to say who will take the league, but I would predict is would likely be Herons, Saints, or Dutchwomen, but don't discount the Red Hawks for staying in the hunt.

Rochester Liberty League Sports: Football, Baseball, Field Hockey, Women's Lacrosse, Softball, Golf (M), Swimming and Diving, Tennis, Squash (M).
Some are LL only, such as Football.
Soccer and Basketball are only UAA.
They have some dual confrence teams, such as Swimming and Baseball. The worst was when they were playing UCAA football games and UAA games. Talk about a tough travel schedule.
Herons get their first win at Home and of the 2006-2007 season last night. A real test coming up this weekend at Ithaca.

How about the SUNYAC's beating up on the Liberty League so far this season. Both Brockport and Oswego beat RPI, Oswego over Skidmore, Potsdam over St. Lawrence and Clarkson, and New Paltz over Vassar. Looks like the SUNYAC is te best league in the state.
My pick is RPI beating St. Lawrence last night. St. Lawrence had absolutely demolished their last 12 opponents and was smelling a national ranking. RPI had lost badly 2 of their last 3. Yet RPI wins by 9. Who woulda thunk it? I wonder if the Larrys were looking ahead to next week against William Smith?

I told you that Marisa Vespa would put on a show! Well 27 points,5 assists and other stat stuffing numbers, Vespa is one of thr best! her team is down 9 at the half and she wills them to victory. Included in that was a 40 ft.shot with 2 secs on the shot clock in the first half. She is a flat out player! Heron Fever Catch It!

Bears are led by Sr. F. Moe Curley with 20 pts and 9 rebounds. Juniors Rachel Graf. Cortney Poirier, and Molly Krauza
had 13, 12 & 10 pts respectively, while senior Center Kelsey Shoen had 10 rebounds and 6 assists.
Junior Sharlyn Harper came off the bench for the Thorughbreds to lead all scorers with 24 points, including 5x9 from beyond the arc.
Bears make the long road trip to Buffalo and Fredonia this weekend. Winning streak now at 8 straight.
Seniors on this team (Shoen & Curley) were 2-23 as freshmen. Major turnaround for the Bears under Tara Ruckh.
I see from the lack of writings that there is no interest in LL women's basketball on this site during the season, much less off season, so I doubt I'll see a response, unless my old head compatriot the Bear writes... but I'm curious about something. Back in my D3 time at RPI, St Lawrence was a place I always admired - beautiful campus, good athletes, at the time a brand new basketball facility, dedicated coaches. I look at the lady's hoops record and they have been consistant winners. What prompts a coach to leave this program for a job at a lady's college, that has had limited success, and little likelihood of being able to recruit the type of athlete who could improve things (at least the Wellsley that I knew of 30 years ago). Can a coach really find everything necessary to win at a school like Wellsley? Had the coach moved up the ladder in D3 league status to a school similar to St Lawrence, or to a D2 or D1 school, it would have been totally understandable - but SLU to Wellsley, I don't get it????
I doubt anybody will see this, but I sure hope RPI's coach feels real good about himself after this baby seal clubbing. RPI 67, Paul Smith's 4. Yup, 4. Guess all the middle school modified and CYO teams in the Capital District were unavailable. Clarkson has scheduled them for next month too.

Caz Bombers, if they want to play "big time", then that's what happens. Other than that, it's hardly a way for ANY team to attain ANY level of confidence. Overall, GO D3! Seriously, two years ago or so, FDU-Florham Park in the MAC Freedom beat Cedar Crest in the old PAC, now Colonial States Athletic Conference, 79/12. Now in 09-10, Cedar Crest has emerged as a real contender, so ya never know - there's always hope for programs to improve.
I should probably have also noted that Paul Smith's College is not a D3 institution. It's primarily a college of forestry, if I remember their old TV ads correctly. I feel bad for the kids looking at the schedule with 50 point losses to community colleges and things called "Word of Life."

Liberty league playoffs going down the final day:
St. Lawrence has won the league with a perfect 16-0 record and RPI joins them in the playoffs. The other 2 spots are an absolute mess. William Smith & Vassar (both 9-6 in the league) and Skidmore & Union (8-7) are alive for the final 2 spots. Skidmore & Union play each other in Saratoga and William Smith and Vassar square off in Poughkeepsie tomorrow, as far as I can tell: the winner of the Vassar/William Smith game gets 1 spot and the loser of the Skidmore/Union game is eliminated. William Smith is elimanted with a loss no matter what happens in the Union/Skidmore game as they lose the tiebreaker to both teams, while Vassar can still make the playoffs with a loss, but they need Union to beat Skidmore (they lose the tiebreaker to Skidmore, but win it against Union).
Vassar beats William Smith to get into the LL playoffs and eliminate William Smith.
Union wins @ Skidmore to clinch the 4 seed
Skidmore goes to 5-1 in LL play with a dominating 69-54 win at Vassar. Skidmore jumped out to a 16-2 lead and never trailed while only tied once all game 23-23 late in the first half.

Skidmore @ William Smith tonight. William Smith coming off the win last week @ Vassar. Could potential be the last stand for Skidmore as a loss drops them to 1-5 in the conference, and even though they'll be done with William Smith, they'll have a road game left @ Vassar and 2 games left vs. St. Lawrence. Since the LL only takes the top 4, usually that #4 spot is around 9-7/10-6 so if Skidmore wants to get in, they don't have much room for error.
LL tournament set. RIT is locked in at #5, Vassar, William Smith & St. Lawrence are the other 3 teams making up the field.
Whoever wins tonight's St. Lawrence/Vassar game gets the 1 seed. William Smith can't finish first, but they can finish second if either Vassar (@ St. Lawrence, @ Clarkson) or St. Lawrence (home vs. Vassar & Bard) have an 0-2 weekend.

And there is a big battle between #1 and #2 in Division III men's basketball on tap!

It doesn't matter what night you tune in to Division III basketball, something will surprise you. There are teams leading conferences that weren't expected to be in the conversation, there are programs who continue their record-setting starts to the season, and others who seem to be defying expectations - well, at least those outside of the locker room.

One has his program off to the best start in a storied program's history, another is leading a conference that has it's traditional leaders off the pace a bit, a third who was never thought would be on top, and a fourth looking to try and change national minds.
There is also a coach who is doing her best to help those with communications challenges, working on diversity and inclusion, all while leading Gallaudet to bigger and better results. Stephanie Stevens is this week's WBCA Center Court guest and will talk about what drew her to the deaf and hard of hearing university and what else keeps her busy off the basketball court. Stevens was a recent honoree of the WBCA Thirty Under 30.

So congratulations to the Liberty League women's teams! 3 teams make it into the tournament with Ithaca, RIT and Vassar.
Along with that, Ithaca gets to host in the opening weekend of the tournament. Very glad to see the Bombers get one more go around at the Ben Light Gymnasium.

My recollection is you're an NWC fan.
The conference has had multiple teams in the tournament frequently, but there wasn't a good case to be made for Whitman or Puget Sound to make the tournament this year.
Puget Sound lost to at-large contenders that were left out of the tournament (Trinity) and Whitman lost two out of three to Puget Sound and George Fox. Plus those games against non-D3 schools are killers in the NCAA's criteria, though I understand the geographic and budget limitations that drive them. With those limitations, the NWC teams either need to be a little lucky in who they draw in holiday tournaments (i.e. it was the wrong year to draw Bethel or Williams) or win more than 20 games to compensate for opponents like Multnomah Bible and Evergreen State.
Now, if you want to complain about hosting opportunities, that's still legit this year.
I'm a SCIAC fan. We will try harder.

Bit of a mixed bag for the Liberty League teams.
Vassar gets overwhelmed by SUNY-Geneseo in the 4th quarter for a blowout. RIT loses on a tough buzzer beater by Baldwin Wallace. Ithaca meanwhile gets a massive 3rd quarter and coasts (somewhat) comfortably to a win over SUNY-Poly.
Have a feeling Ithaca is going to need to get firing a little sooner tomorrow in facing St. Joseph's (that was a pretty bad first quarter from both teams), but I think they do have that in them.
IC's women's team continues to impress. Over the past 10 years:
--Nine 20-win seasons
--Eight trips to the NCAAs
--Seven trips to the second round
--Three trips to the third round
Dan Raymond's program is just consistently excellent.
Coach Raymond is out-recruiting me. :( 3 of his current starters and 1 coming in next year.

My daughter works in Ithaca and lives nearby. Lots of Amherst alums in the area. A former one was the head of Ithaca HS. Area sends a lot of talented athletes to the Nescac. A number of years ago there was a guard on the WBB from Cortland. Her parents were associated with Cortland Un.
Anyway, good luck with your school's " purple and white" dressed WBB team in the sweet 16. Do not let the Tufts Jumbos push your team at Scranton. Oh yes, HC of WBB at Amherst likes your list too.

Have to think the Bombers are strong favorites to win the LL auto-bid the way they are playing right now. Avenged both conference losses with blowout wins over St. Lawrence and RPI, and just took out 2nd-place Vassar by 19.
And although Pool C bids are always scarce, hopefully, Ithaca has done enough to be in good position for an At-large bid (Although Cortland beating New Paltz would have helped there) even if they falter.
Yup. Looks like they are peaking at the right now.

SLU women are having their best start to a season (5-0) since the '01-'02 NCAA runner up squad. Great comeback win today against Hamilton.
I really hope SLU women get more than 6 votes in this week's top 25 poll. 10-0 and coming off a 99-81 win on the road against Vassar. They certainly deserve some more recognition in my opinion.

10-0 means they've done everything asked of them. But realistically they probably have to beat Ithaca to get more attention given the low strength of schedule. Majority of wins are against sub .500 teams. Best win so far was probably at Williams, currently #86 on Massey. Big game Friday, hosting the Bombers. Good luck!

All good points. Ithaca is definitely one of the top teams in the league this year and are defending league champs so it's definitely expected that folks would want to see the result of that game first. 8 votes is fair, I'm just glad the team is having a good season so far!
I've seen the Saints women play; and they are a solid, deep, and well-coached team.
As for not having played anyone; CNU, which is ranked #2, also undefeated, has a Massey SOS of 197, and a forward looking SOS of 205;
while St. Lawrence has a Massey SOS of 199, and a forward looking SOS of 171.
SLU has 4 wins ON THE ROAD over teams within the top 110, including winning a quality tournament at Williams, beating both the hosts and Hamilton from the fifth ranked NESCAC conference.
St. John Fisher in the same region as SLU is ranked, they beat a [winless at the time] visiting Clarkson team by 3, SLU beat them by 24.
If St. John Fisher is ranked, SLU should be ranked as well.
Really great game between SLU and Ithaca. SLU gets their first loss losing by 1 in overtime. They were down 9 with 2 minutes left but made a nice run at the end to tie it. Ithaca has 2 really good scorers. Can't wait for the rematch!

No Frederick or Barringer, two players over 6'2" that combined for 37 points and 27 rebounds against Vassar in the first matchup. Now SLU is probably not going to host the conference tournament. Awful luck.

I'm aware, my point was that in order to host they had to at least win the 2nd matchup against Vassar to even have a chance. Even with a win against Ithaca they are still unlikely to host after that loss.

Disappointed to see SLU miss out. Who knows if they were even on the board ahead of Rochester, but I figured they would be ahead of Washington and Lee with a higher win %, nearly identical SOS and only 1 fewer win against RRO. But that's the risk you expose yourself to when you put your fate in the hands of the committee. A great season nonetheless.
Great season by St. Lawrence, and yeah that's the Pool C game. IC winning the A almost certainly cost the LL a 2-bid conference.
Bombers draw Catholic in Round 1.
Common opponents:
Scranton: IC wins by 22, Catholic loses three times, by 3, 4, and 17 points.
William Smith: IC wins by 30 and 20, Catholic wins by 18.

Best of luck to the Bombers. An extremely impressive team that is explosive offensively. Yesterday looked like it was going to go down to the wire but Ithaca scored 13 straight in the final 4 minutes. I hope they represent the league well with a deep run!
Ithaca pulls away with a strong 3rd quarter, picking up their 25th win of the season. It's their fifth 25-win season under Dan Raymond. If Ithaca can win today, it will be the 450th win of his IC career.
It's the 9th consecutive NCAA appearance for the Bombers in which they've picked up a first round win.
Also, a tip of the hat to assistant coach Jim Mullins. The longtime IC men's head coach went out with a bang, finishing his head coach career with a 24-6 record, and a trip to the second round of the NCAAs, where, in his final game, the Bombers nearly knocked off the #1 team in the country, having Swathmore tied at 62 with 8 minutes to go, and trailing by just 3 with 1:30 to go. Great to see him on the sidelines in the NCAAs again.
Brutal finish to Ithaca's season. Came back from being down 13 in the final minutes and tied it on a last second shot only to lose at the buzzer in OT. Great season for them, really unfortunate it ended that way.
Anyone know why Skidmore wasn't allowed to cut the nets down at Ithaca on Sunday? Should be a standard part of getting to host a postseason tournament.
That's pretty unfortunate for the kids from Saratoga.
I hope there is a really good reason that decision was made.
I know Ithaca has been making some pretty deep staffing cuts the past few years to try & save money here & there but its come to the point where putting up a new net is problematic?
Regardless of who wins a league championship or where, cutting the nets is a moment of joy those kids should have had.
For as good as Ithaca has been the last couple years they've had 2 straight what I consider to be disappointing finishes to their seasons. I think this year's and last year's teams were better than the one that got to the 2nd weekend in 2019. Pretty tough to lose at the last second on your home court 2 consecutive seasons.

There's clutch, and then there's "Getting fouled with .5 seconds to go, down by three on the road, with a 1 seed in the conference tournament on the line and then hitting all three free throws to force OT", which is what Ithaca did to Vassar today. Great win by the Bombers
