When does the Cross Country chat begin?
Any predictions for the fall?
Now sounds good. I've moved it into a discussion of its own.
Thanks Pat.
Before making predictions, any news of recruits and tranfers, or the healed and injured?

After reading the Men's 2006 results (http://www.raceberryjam.com/archives/ncmencc05.html) dozens of times since Novemeber I've put together this little guesswork. I don't know which 2006 track men have eligibility this fall.
In the hunt for the team title:
It seems like it's a battle between the Knights of the round table.
-- Wartburg: they return the 2, 3, 4 and 6 runners from their 2006 6th-place team. When their 5th man comes to the forefront and they use the karma left by Moen and Buttry; they challenge for the title.
... 2006 t&f men: Tim McKenna (5k-14:46/3k steeple-9:12)...Patrick Johnson (5k-14:45/3k steeple-9:11)...Keith Solverson (5k-14:44)
-- Calvin: the top-7 from 2005 could be back. With their experienced coaches the bitter taste of 2005 they'll be tough to beat.
... 2006 t&f men: Todd Schuster (800m-1:53)...Jed Christiansen (5k-14:41/10k-30:48)...Tim Finnegan (5k-14:39/10k-30:20)...Harrison Jorritsma (5k-14:47/10k-30:48)...Nate DeHaan (3k steeple-9:22)
The battle for bronze:
-- (W) La Crosse: the 2005 champs ruturn 2 of their top-5 (3 and 4). They're used to bringing how trophies.
... 2006 t&f men: Andrew Boldt (800m-1:52)...Dan Haumschild (800m-1:52)...Mike Herlihy (3k steeple-9:06)...Bill Walkowicz (3k steeple-9:18)...Kevin Olejar (3k steeple-9:22)
-- Hamline: the one team with a chance to break into the top-2. Seems like they spent their spring getting ready for the fall, not too deep on the oval this spring.
... 2006 t&f men: Travis Bristow (3k steeple-9:13)
-- Tufts: tough on the top-end. They need to find 3-7. Heard they may have two recruits in their top-5.
... 2006 t&f men: Chris Kantos (5k-14:43/10k-31:02)...Josh Kennedy (10k-30:56)...Matt Lacey (10k-31:06)
-- North Central: returning four men for their last season–that, along with the always present NCC youngsters stepping-up, could put a trophy on the Cardnials bus.
... 2006 t&f men: Adam Pennington (800m-1:51)...Julius White (800m-1:51)...Andy Hubner (800m-1:52/1500m-3:51)...Roland Hopkins (1500m-3:54)...Nick Hird (5k-14:38)...Chris Bosworth (10k-31:09)
-- Haverford: returning 2-4. The kings of the middle distance still takes its lumps in the fall.
... 2006 t&f men: Sam Dalke 3:52 (1500m-3:52)...Bernie Muller (10k-30:56)...Grant Scott (3k steeple-9:06)

Two head coaches, an assistant coach and a jv coach for CROSS COUNTRY!? Who else has that kind of staffing?
I'm our high school boys/girls, junior high boys/girls "Head" cross country coach. I also drive the van. What's an assistant cross country coach?? ;D

Junior High coach then you better add baby-sitter to the list
You must be reading my mail - baby sitter, counselor et al :'(
Im a D3 bball player going into my sr year. Do you think running this cc season will help me out this year for bball?? I ve heard no because bball and cc is two totally different types of running any suggestions
Cross countrywill improve your general conditioning and your endurance. I have several BB players on my squad. If you have a good coach for cc, you might learn things about training that probably wern't important to your bball coaches. IMHO
Thanks for your reply I think I will Run This year
At my HS the top wrestlers also participated in CC in the spring to keep up their conditioning.
thats good to know i really want to have a good season so im looking for anything that will help
North Central XC (http://www.noctrl.edu/x7740.xml%5B/url) season preview:
For the first time in 25 years, the North Central men's cross country program failed to place in the top four in the country at the national meet in 2005. The 2006 season is also the first time in a long time that the team has no returning All-Americans.
A bleak outlook? Not at all.
"It will be a very, very exciting year because we've got potential and youth and work ethic," Carius said. "I think what we need is experience and to blend it into a team mind set. Then we'll see where we end up." ..... click on title .....

Am I correct in assuming that #2 Wheaton is Wheaton (MA), since NCC has won the CCIW for like 3000 straight years? Same thing with #22 Wheaton on the women's - Mass.?
Good point, but I doubt it. Wheaton IL is building and building. Wheaton MA has not had any tradition in the distances. On the racing oval they're all sprints and jumps.

North Central had a down year in 2005. This could be their neighbors' chance to win it the CCIW.
2006 Calvin XC preview, men and women (http://www.calvin.edu/sports/preview/fall.htm)
The Calvin men had a strong showing today at the first Calvin invitational, with a score of 18 against #5 Oshkosh, Aquinas, Ohio Northern, Hope, Dennison, Elmhurst, Otterbein, and Baldwin Wallace. Looks like they could be stronger this year than they were last.
The women (#14) also finished first with a score of 32, compared to 88 for second-place Oshkosh, ranked #11 nationally by the USTFCCCA. Nice to see three sophomores place in the top 5 for the knights.

Very scary . . . Calvin's men had better pull out the win this year becasue it will be their last for awhile.
That's a mighty nice, tight pack of finishers. On Calvin's team, 2:17 separated their first and 12th finishers.
It will be very interesting to see how the top 5 compare from these two schools. Too bad they don't meet before NCAAs. Any chance of convincing the Thunder to make the 200.001 mile drive up to GR for the Calvin Invitational next year?

Wow, St Olaf is a high-end meet. Exciting to see so many quality teams at one course. I think the D3 T&F and XC in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and to a lesser extent Illinois really benifit from the solid D3 competition they can find every weekend.
FOX NEWS -- Mumps outbreak at Wheaton College, Illinois ..... being that men's XC is Wheaton's best chance for an NCAA title this fall, I wonder what they'll do to protect the students?
I'd be taking all my runners off campus until this blows over.
Good source of Division III XC Info Track Shark NCAA Division III Blog (http://www.trackshark.com/blogs/division3blog/)
The Track Shark blog is great. Nice source for interviews and results.
The Track Shark chat is poor, esp. when you want to discuss D3, no one cares. I think many D1 and D2 athletes do not like to recognize that there are D3 athletes that can compete at their level while paying tuition.

1. Geneseo | #1 | 33 pts |
2. Washington U | #2 | 66 pts |
3. Depauw | #33 | 99 pts |
4. MIT | | 106 pts |
5. Wheaton | #22 | 164 pts |
The most surprising result here is the result by the Wheaton women, behind #33 Depauw and even behind unrated MIT. Have the mumps decimated the XC team?
1. Geneseo | #21 | 71 pts |
2. North Central | #13 | 109 pts |
3. RIT | | 118 pts |
4. Wheaton | #2 | 119 pts |
5. Depauw | | 144 |
More surprises! Great showing by Geneseo. The mumps must have reached the Wheaton men's team, too. (2:32 separated their 1st and 12th finishers, unlike 0:40 in the previous meet.)

Dark Knight --
Do the Cardinal harriers compete in
TWO CCIW meets? The idea of Calvin having to spend two weekends racing against little, if any, competition does not make sense (IMO).
When does an athletic department, or conference, look to build quality programs at the expense of other schools who don't attempt to compete in certain sports?

I think North Central's continued CCIW dominance is threatened by coach Bradley and his Wheaton teams. Bradley was named last spring's NCAA D3
Coach of the Year for women's track & field and both his XC teams are solid this fall.
I'm not thinking that they'll win, just threaten the Cardinals on the track and course year after year. Calvin does not have that in MIAA XC.

Do the Cardinal harriers compete in TWO CCIW meets? The idea of Calvin having to spend two weekends racing against little, if any, competition does not make sense (IMO).
When does an athletic department, or conference, look to build quality programs at the expense of other schools who don't attempt to compete in certain sports?
I suspect that Calvin -- and any other school in an athletic conference -- has a contractual obligation to play the games or meets set up by that conference. Calvin Cross Country doesn't quite have the star power (as yet?) to go it alone, maybe get a nice fat ESPN contract for broadcasting their meets.
But not to fear. There's a good meet coming up Friday, with a number of DI, II, III, and other teams -- the Notre Dame Invitational. Last year Calvin took first in the Gold division, with 45 points. North Central (the next DIII school) took 5th, with 157 points. Oshkosh was 6th, Augustana 10th, Stevens Point 15th.
The schedule has Calvin running in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Saturday. Can that be right -- two meets in two days? And does anyone know who will be there?

Notre Dame only allows 12 athletes per team, I would guess Calvin is sending a "B" team to Loyola.
When do the new USTFCCCA Division III cross country rankings come out? It's been a while since the pre-season rankings were posted.
A friend of mine sent this to me. It is the MIAA meet re-scored with Calvin's JV team in the mix.

Who's racin' at the Orange Crush VIII?
BTW. Don't ya hate the orange on the blue background?
Cowman, I was under the impression that the Orange Crush drew a larger D3 contingent.
McMurry Men finished 2nd of five teams to Provisional D1 U Central Arkansas (32-33) and the McMurry Women finished 3rd of 7 behind UCentral Arkansas and D2 Ouachita Baptist.
The Texas State D3 Cross Country Championships are being hosted by McMurry this weekend. This should have teams from Austin College, Southwestern and Trinity from the SCAC, independent UDallas and ASC teams UT-Dallas, UT-Tyler, East Texas Baptist, LeTourneau, Concordia Austin, McMurry, Sul Ross State and Texas Lutheran Women.

It's not just two, it's three, counting the conference championships. Here's Calvin's schedule:
Date | Opponent and Location |
September 16 | Calvin Invitational at Calvin College |
September 23 | MIAA Jamboree at Hope College |
September 29 | at Notre Dame Invitational |
October 6 | at Michigan Intercollegiates |
October 15 | at Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invite, Oshkosh, WI |
October 28 | MIAA Championships at Alma |
November 11 | NCAA Regional at Hanover, IN |
November 18 | NCAA Nationals at Cincinnati, OH |
Is it unusual for a conference to have two meets and a championship?

As for having two meets, if the conference sees that as a viable way to provide adequate competition in preparation to the conference meet, then I think that it is wise.

Michigan Intercollegiates is not an MIAA competition. It is for all colleges and universities in Michigan. It's a big meet.

Definitely a good result. It was a strong field, with at least 6 ranked D-III teams and several D-I and other teams. But Calvin won by a large margin; take away Calvin's top two runners, and they still would have won.
1. Calvin (#1), 31 points
2. Oshkosh (#7), 96
3. Notre Dame 'B', 138
4. Windsor, 180
5. North Central (#9), 191
6. Hillsdale (D-II #12 if I remember right), 245
7. OU (D-I)
8. Stevens Point (#26)
9. Gonzaga (D-I)
10. Anderson (#17)
11. Augustana (#21)
...and several other D-I schools
Last year Calvin had three All-Americans; it appears that this year there could be five.
I wonder to what extent Finnegan sacrifices his own possible time by sticking with the pack longer to improve the team score.

Not
waiting for anyone, certainly, but they do make a point of trying to stick with the pack for the first part of the race, e.g. 4 miles. I suspect it varies from race to race. I know I've read the occasional comment by a coach about how runners have sacrificed their own personal times for the good of the team.

Two head coaches, an assistant coach and a jv coach for CROSS COUNTRY!? Who else has that kind of staffing?
who the hell needs more than one cross country coach. all they do is run long distances, its not like they gotta dribble a ball, shot a ball into a hoop, and pass a ball! all they do is run, thats it. i would think one coach would be able to handle telling their kids to run long distances.

Your logic is impeccable . . . are you at one of those great schools where the basketball team has a dribbling coach, and a shooting coach, and a passing coach? WOW!
Plus, you must be at a school where the coach only
tells the athletes what to do, no relationships, no teaching, no community . . . are you hanging banners for every recruit that shows up on campus? 'cause your approach is not going to bring many wins, let alone championships.

I think one thing the coaches do really well at Calvin is to mentor their athletes. They seem to come beside them, not just as runners, but as people, and help them learn how to be fine adults. They emphasize getting outside of themselves and thinking about their teammates. That sets them apart from other teams in many ways. And while there are tensions at times, like on any team, they work at resolving them and working together. You can get a good picture of the inner working of the team in this interview with Finnegan: http://www.dcrunner.org/finneganinterview.htm

Scottie, where have you gone?

I wonder to what extent Finnegan sacrifices his own possible time by sticking with the pack longer to improve the team score.
IMO, unless things have been ironed-out at Calvin I doubt Finnegan was waiting for anyone. If Finnigan and his team mates are together watchout.
I'm not entirely crazy after all. I found this quote from the recap of the 2004 national championship race (http://www.calvin.edu/sports/releases/2004_05/ncaacross.htm):
QuotePack running was another key to Calvin's championship performance according to Diemer and Hoekstra. "Our guys could have run as a bunch of individuals and sought their own glory," said Hoekstra. "But if we had done that, there is no way we would have won the national championship. Some of our guys would have fallen out the back door if they had run like that but by focusing on each other, it gave them the encouragement to keep pressing on."
"There were some guys on our team who made individual sacrifices so that this championship could be possible," said Diemer. "They stayed together in a pack and that made all the difference in the world. Because of the large crowd today, it was very difficult for runners to see up ahead. The crowd kind of acted as a canopy over the course and unless you were in a pack, there was no way you could see your teammates up ahead."
Making sacrifices for the good of the team is nothing new for the Knights said Haagsma. "We don't care about individual awards," said Haagsma. "We care about each other and we care about this team. That's why this championship is so satisfying because it's not a collection of individuals, it's a team that works for a common purpose.
Calvin men and women took second at the Michigan Intercollegiates (http://www.ferris.edu/htmls/sports/wcc/0607news/06michigan.htm) 4k race, behind Grand Valley (men D-II #4, women D-II #2). Last year Calvin's men edged out Grand Valley in this event.
Also, it looks as though there will be more competition for the Calvin Men's team top seven, as senior Tyler Zwagerman is back from injury and ran a 25:28 in the 8k race. Last year he was Calvin's #6 runner at the MIAA meets. And junior Dan Vanden Akker ran a strong 25:19.

I don't understand why the La Crosse men's team is still at #2, and Saint John's dropped from #20 to #21, when Saint John's edged out La Crosse and took first at the 2006 Blugold Open (http://www.uwec.edu/Athletics/mcc/webpdf/0607/blugold_open_results.pdf).

I do not have all of the details, but I can tell you what I think is the case:
Al Hoekstra and Brian Diemer are co-head coaches for men and women (I think).
Rick Otti (middle-distance track coach) and Nancy Meyer (former women's coach and current women's AD) and Laura Scholma (former women's grad assistant) are all assistant coaches for both teams.
Jeff Engbers, alum, is grad assistant for both teams.
Rob Hyde, who volunteered as an assistant for several years, is now the JV coach.
What I hear is that they are all helping each other really.

Very impressive. It's great to see a program make a commitment to a traditionally
minor sport. Do you think Calvin's lack of football allows them to pull resources into other sports?

Excellent post, keep up the great work.
Looks like North Central's bus drivers got mixed up. The 'A' team ended up at the Parkside Invitational, where there was no ranked competition, and two of the top 6 teams were community colleges. The team ended up with 13 of the top 17 collegiate runners.
Meanwhile the 'B' team ended up at the highly competitive Oshkosh Invitational, where they placed 8 in the bottom 12!

LaCrosse sucks, they will go down at the WIAC.
How do people see them as #2 and close to Calvin? Calvin will grind them up with their 3-7 runners.
My question is how does Calvin fund all those coaches?

La Crosse doesn't suck, and of course the spectre is in the back of the minds of the Calvin folk of La Crosse's win last year at nationals, when Calvin was favored, and leading with a mile left. It takes more than better average times, it takes heart, to win at nationals. The knight seniors feel as though they have some unfinished business.
It's unfortunate that La Crosse and Calvin haven't yet crossed paths. However, there have been common opponents. Calvin's top-5 average time was 32 seconds behind Wisconsin at the ND Invitational, though in different races. La Crosse's top-5 average time was 59 seconds behind Wisconsin at Drews/Neubauer.
I don't know of a meeting between La Crosse and Oshkosh yet, either. However, Oshkosh was 55 seconds behind Wisconsin at the ND invitational, suggesting that they could be competitive with La Crosse, if not slightly faster.
Of course, there could have been runners not racing or not performing up to par at any of these meets, making comparisions inaccurate.

It's great to see a program make a commitment to a traditionally minor sport. Do you think Calvin's lack of football allows them to pull resources into other sports?

Could be, but how much are the coaches paid? Fifty students (XC runners) at $27,000 a year could cover some expenses.
Congratulations to former McMurry track and Cross country star Gina Vandiver who won the Women's Division of the Double Iron Man (4.8 mile swim, 224 mile bike ride, 52.4 mile run) in a time of 31 hours and 13 minutes.

Or many of them could be volunteers.
I expect that most of the assistant coaches at Calvin have "day jobs" and are volunteers, or receive only a token pay. There are two head coaches, but they coach two teams (men's and women's) and have other responsibilities, such as teaching.
Calvin's XC teams have the day off. The La Crosse men had a meet yesterday, the Luther College Dual, which they won 19-42. Oshkosh had a non-scoring meet, and NYU has a meet today (East Stroudsberg Invitational) which doesn't sound all that promising for tough competition.
Next week Calvin is at the MIAA championship meet, where the biggest question will be whether both teams can get perfect scores. The big meet of the day will be the WIAC championship.
Other than the WIAC championship, is anything else interesting happening before regionals and nationals?
Next week LaCrosse loses at the WIAC to Oshkosh.

Bold prediction....care to share your thinking?
I think Kaul wins and with the exception of Sigl and the WW guy, its a dual meet. No disrepect to the one or two other interlopers, but I think the Oshkosh pack will match the LaX pack. LaX does have a tremendous advantage being the host, with all the alumni there, though.
It should be a good race and a close one, but I think Oshkosh has nothing to lose in this race and so they will be loose.
Good luck to everyone and hopefully the course is in good shape and the weather is kind to the fans.
On the "LaCrosse sucks" part, that will always be true, no specific reference to the 2006 team.
here is a pretty good article (http://www.fayettevillenc.com/article?id=245371) about methodist college runner husein nasiro-sigo
a little background - mc is one of a handful of schools who are endowed by a foundation (the davis foundation, i think) to offer significant academic scholarships to students who attend uwc schools around the world - when husein arrived on campus, nobody had any idea that he was a cross-country athlete, so he's been a pretty pleasant surprise, to say the least

Calvin at the WIAC:
Just a guess:
Calvin 31
LaCrosse 58
Oshkosh 78
That's based on how Calvin and Oshkosh have lined up, and on how LaCrosse and Oshkosh lined up today.
I would guess you're right.
LaCrosse sucks.
Congratulations to McMurry's Women's Cross Country team on their winning the ASC Championship.
Coach David Chandler has done a great job with them.
The men had their best conference individual performances in several years only to finish 2nd to a strong UT-Tyler. Keep up the good work and I look forward to Track in the Spring!

I think the new Osksh uniforms are the coolest ever in CC. The old North Central vertical stripes were okay, but these new checkerboard uniforms--the team actually designed them--are the bomb.
Congrats to the NCC men on ANOTHER conference championship and to the women on their championship as well! It was a great weekend to be a Cardinal!

"Kicked" is past tense, which is true. NCC no longer a threat.
Some real domination in Michigan hs cc this weekend. Dexter (in winning their 5th consecutive state title in division 2) shattered the long-standing state record of 39 (each division races well-over 200 runners between teams and individual qualifiers) with a 28. Their record lasted all of 30 minutes as Pinckney won their second consecutive division 1 [biggest schools] title) with a 27. Dexter and Pinckney both train at Hudson Mills Metropark - must be some magic at that location! ;D

Harrier,
Thanks for the correction.
But it is still some heavy-duty domination, even if not an all-time record! ;D
I heard it is snowing at Augustana so now LaCrosse has an excuse for its beginning of its habitual (2005 was a fluke) NCAA season swoom.

Div. III XC Regional Awards
Harren, Woods head Division III regional honorees
Hailey Harren, the defending national champion from Gustavus Adolphus, and Mike Woods and Don Fritsch, the coaches of reigning team champions SUNY Geneseo and Wisconsin-La Crosse, are among the notables selected as NCAA Division III Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2006 collegiate cross country season.
The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) honors the top coaches and athletes in each of the eight Division III regions. Regional meets were held Saturday, Nov. 11.
Each of the honorees will be coaching or competing in the NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18, in West Chester, Ohio.
The athletes and coaches of the year were selected by coaches within the respective regions.
This year's regional award winners:
Central Region
Men's coach: Paul Schmaedeke, Hamline
In his 19th year as Hamline's head coach, Schmaedeke collected his first regional championship Saturday when the Pipers won the Central Region men's title. Hamline finished second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Association meet as Travis Bristow won the individual MIAC title. Schmaedeke was the captain of Hamline's cross country team in the 1970s.
Women's coach: Evelyn Freeman, Grinnell
The cross country coach at Grinnell since 1980, Freeman enjoyed one of her greatest coaching moments Saturday when her women's team won the Central Region title. The Pioneers earlier won their third straight Midwest Conference championship, placing nine runners on the All-MWC team. Evelyn's husband, Will Freeman, coaches Grinnell's men's cross country team.
Men's athlete: Chris Dunker, Nebraska Wesleyan
Dunker edged Hamline's Travis Bristow to win the Central Region men's individual title in the snow in Northfield, Minn., clocking 25:37 for 8,000 meters. A junior from Beatrice, Neb., Dunker also led Nebraska Wesleyan to the Great Plains Athletic Conference title with his runner-up finish in the individual race.
Women's athlete: Hailey Harren, Gustavas Adolphus
Harren, the defending NCAA Division III cross country champion, raced to her second straight Central Regional title Saturday, finishing more than 30 seconds in front of the field. A senior from Cold Spring, Minn., Harren also won her second straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Association title.
Midwest Region
Women's coach: Mahesh Narayanan, North Central
In his seventh season as the women's cross country coach at North Central, Narayanan guided the Cardinals to their first-ever NCAA berth. North Central finished second at the Midwest Regional behind Washington. North Central also won its first Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women's title since 1995. North Central runner Amber Druien won the CCIW individual title and placed second at regionals.
Men's coach: Jeff Stiles, Washington University
Stiles guided the Bears to a second-place finish at the University Athletic Association meet and a fifth place showing at the highly competitive Midwest Regional. Washington received an at-large men's berth to the NCAA Division III Championships. Stiles' women's team won the Midwest title against a field that included four other nationally ranked teams.
Men's athlete: Tyler Sigl, Wisconsin-Platteville
Sigl was the dominant runner in one of the most hotly contested Division III regions in the country. His season included victories at the Midwest Region and Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meets. Sigl, a junior from Seymour, Wisc., finished fourth in last year's NCAA meet, the highest placing ever by a Platteville runner.
Women's athlete: Marcia Taddy, Wisconsin-Platteville
Taddy won the Midwest Regional in 21:22.8 over the 6,000-meter course, edging North Central's Amber Druien by two seconds. Taddy earlier won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference individual title as well as the Wartburg and UW Whitewater invitational races. Taddy, senior from Two Rivers, Wisc., was the co-winner of the WIAC Cross Country Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year.
West Region
Men's coach: Troy Engle, Occidental
Occidental qualified for its first NCAA men's championship since 1995 with a second-place finish at the West Regional behind Willamette. Occidental also won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's title. Engle is in his eighth season as the men's and women's track and cross country coach at Oxy.
Women's coach: Matt McGuirk, Willamette
With Sarah Zerzan winning individual titles in both races, McGuirk's Bearcats claimed West Region and Northwest Conference championships. It was the fourth straight regional title for Willamette's women. McGuirk's men won their fifth straight West title.
Men's athlete: Julian Boggs, Colorado College
Boggs, a junior from Berea, Kentucky, raced to championship wins at the West Region and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference meets. Boggs will attempt to improve on his 27-place finish at last year's NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships Saturday in West Chester, Ohio.
Women's athlete: Sarah Zerzan, Willamette
Zerzan, a junior from San Carlos, Calif., won the West Region race by 37 seconds in leading the Bearcats to their fourth straight regional team title. Zerzan also finished first at the Northwest Conference Championships and won several invitational races over the course of the season.
South/Southeast Region
Men's coach: Lisa Owens, Centre
Owens guided the Colonels to their second straight South/Southeast Region title Saturday. Centre scored 54 points, nine points in front of runner-up Rhodes. Centre was also second at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference meet. Owens has been the men's and women's cross country coach at Centre since 1998.
Women's coach: John Curtin, Emory
Emory won the South/Southeast Region women's championship with 38 points, 26 points clear of second-place Trinity. Emory's Amy DiBianca won the individual title. Curtin, the cross country coach at Emory since 1985, won 13 straight women's regional titles from 1991 to 2003 and will be taking his 15th women's team to the NCAA Championships this weekend.
Men's athlete: Alex Mahoney, Rhodes
Mahoney won the South/Southeast Region individual race, helping Rhodes finished second in the team standings. Mahoney, a junior from Winnetka, Ill., covered the 8,000-meter course at Wilmington College in 25:41. Mahoney earlier finished fifth at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
Women's athlete: Amy DiBianca, Emory
DiBianca finished first out of 177 runners at the South/Southeast Regional, clocking 22:54.2 for 6,000 meters. DiBianca, a senior from Winston-Salem, N.C., placed seventh at the University Athletic Association meet. This will be DiBianca's fourth trip to the NCAA meet.
Atlantic Region
Men's coach: Nick McDonough, NYU
McDonough is headed for his fourth straight NCAA meet after coaching the Violets to victory at the Atlantic Region event in Geneseo, N.Y. NYU won the men's regional title with 67 points. Earlier in the season, NYU made history by winning its first-ever University Athletic Association title.
Women's coach: Mike Woods, SUNY Geneseo
Woods was the National Coach of the Year in 2005 after leading SUNY Geneseo to its first-ever NCAA women's cross country title. The Knights began the 2006 season ranked No. 1 and have stayed there all season, highlighted by wins at the Atlantic Regional and State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) meets. In 15 seasons at Geneseo, Woods has taken the women's cross country team to 12 NCAA meets.
Men's athlete: Matt DeShane, Plattsburgh State
DeShane finished 25 seconds ahead of the field in winning his second straight Atlantic Region title Saturday in Castile, N.Y. DeShane, a senior All-American from Norwood, N.Y., also won his second straight SUNYAC title this fall.
Women's athlete: Liz Montgomery, SUNY Geneseo
As a freshman, Montgomery finished third at the NCAA Division III Championships as the Knights won the national team title. She picked off this fall where she left off last season, leading top-ranked Geneseo to SUNYAC and Atlantic Region team titles by taking individual honors in both championship races. Montgomery is a sophomore from Glenville, N.Y.
New England Region
Men's coach: Peter Farwell, Williams
Despite losing his NCAA champion, Neal Holtschulte, to graduation, Farwell guided Williams to a resounding win at the New England Regional. The Ephs finished with 57 points, well in front of Bowdoin's runner-up total of 125. Three of Farwell's runners placed in the top seven, led by second-place finisher Stephen Wills. Williams also won its first New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's title since 2000.
Women's coach: Terry Aldrich, Middlebury
After finishing fourth at the NESCAC and ECAC meets, Middlebury won the New England Region title with 73 points, finishing in front of highly regarded Amherst, Tufts and Williams. Aldrich has won three NCAA Division III women's cross country titles at Middlebury - in addition to being one of the most successful alpine skiing coaches in the history of collegiate athletics.
Men's athlete: Hunter Norte, Trinity
Norte extended his outstanding season by winning the New England Region title by a 10-second margin. Norte, a sophomore from Ellington, Conn., earlier won the NESCAC individual championship and placed second at the RIT, James Early and UMass-Dartmouth invitational meets.
Women's athlete: Ellen Davis, Wesleyan
Davis qualified for her fourth NCAA cross country meet by racing to a 12-second win at the New England Regional in Springfield, Mass. Davis, a senior team captain from Montclair, N.J., finished 15th at last year's NCAA meet to earn All-America honors.
Great Lakes Region
Men's coach: Brian Diemer/Al Hoekstra, Calvin
Calvin showed why it's been the top-ranked team in the country all year, scoring just 17 points at the Great Lakes Regional. Diemer and Hoekstra's runners claimed the top four spots in the men's race, led by winner Tim Finnegan. Brian Diemer and Al Hoekstra were co-coaches when Calvin won NCAA men's cross country titles in 2000, 2003 and 2005. Diemer won an Olympic bronze medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 1984.
Women's coach: Kathy Lanese, Case Western Reserve
This has been an eventful autumn for Lanese and her women's team. The Spartans made history in October by winning their first-ever University Athletic Association championship. They then won the first regional title in school history, scoring 53 points to edge Calvin (57) for the Great Lakes championship.
Men's athlete: Tim Finnegan, Calvin
Finnegan won his second straight Great Lakes title, clocking 25:25.9 over the 8,000-meter course in Cleveland, Ohio. Finnegan, a senior from Los Alamos, N.M., also won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title. A three-time All-American, Finnegan finished third in last year's NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
Women's athlete: Katie Wieferich, College of Wooster
Wieferich won the Great Lakes Regional, her fifth win in six races this season. She'll be making her second straight appearance at the NCAA meet, hoping to improve on her 54th-place showing last year. Wieferich is a senior from Marrieta, Ohio.
Mideast Region
Men's coach: Bill Ross, Allegheny
Ross, one of the most successful coaches in the history of the North Coast Athletic Conference, had another banner season this fall. With a second-place finish at the Mideast Regional, the Gators came within three points of perennial powerhouse Haveford. Allegheny's men also won their third straight NCAC title, placing five runners in the top 10.
Women's coach: Don Nichter, Dickinson
Nichter claimed his fifth Mideast Regional title Saturday when the Red Devils outdistanced Haverford 49-104. The Blue Devils also won their ninth Centennial Conference title this fall under Nichter's direction.
Men's athlete: Macharia Yuot, Widener
Yuot won his third straight Mideast Regional, clocking 25:58 over the 8,000-meter course in Waynesburg, Pa. Yuot, a senior from Philadelphia, will try to improve on his second-place finishes at the NCAA cross country meet in 2003 and 2005. Yuot won his fourth straight Middle Atlantic Conference title this fall and is a five-time NCAA champion on the track.
Women's athlete: Caitlin Bradley, Dickinson
Bradley finished 22 seconds in front of the runner-up in winning the Mideast Region race. Bradley, a junior from Fairfield, Conn., also finished first at the Centennial Conference championships, leading the Red Devils to the team title. Bradley finished 31st at last year's NCAA meet, earning All-America honors.

There's an interview with Tim Finnegan (http://www.trackshark.com/blogs/division3blog/667/Interviews%3A+Tim+Finnegan+of+Calvin.html) over at trackshark.com. Finnegan is Calvin's top runner and a possible contender for first in the nation, along, perhaps, with Widener senior Macharia Yuout, Wisconsin-Oshkosh junior Willy Kaul, and Wisconsin-Platteville junior Tyler Sigl.
The Calvin women's result at the Great Lakes regional (57 points, to Case Western's 53) was deceptive. Calvin's #5 runner was ill and had trouble breathing. She finished 1:06 behind #4, and she hadn't finished more than 0:13 after #4 previously this year. If she had done that, Calvin would have won the meet with 31 points, to Case Western's 55.
This result shows the difference it can make when one team member has a cold!
Calvin comes into the nationals ranked #7, but the coaches are hoping they can move up "a few spots" with a strong performance.
Team USA set for International Chiba Ekiden
11-17-2006
INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field announced the U.S. team for the 2006 International Chiba Ekiden, to be held in Chiba, Japan on November 23. A total of 11 teams including Team USA, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, France and Great Britain will compete in the marathon relay.
"Once again, we have several post-collegiate athletes who are eager to compete in such a prestigious international event," said Fred Finke, USATF Long Distance Running Division Chair. In the 2005 edition the U.S. men took third and the women finished ninth.
The relay teams will consist of six legs each, ranging in distance from 5 km to 10 km, Team USA is as follows:
Men
Fasil Bizuneh (Bristol, Va.) - The runner-up at the 2006 USA 5 km Championships, Bizuneh has seen steady improvement since moving to Bristol to train with Chiba teammate, Fernando Cabada. In addition to his 5 km performance, Bizuneh has seen top ten finishes at this year's USA 20 km and Marathon Championships where he finished seventh and fifth respectively.
Andrew Carlson (St. Paul, Minn.) - A Team USA Minnesota athlete, Carlson makes his second appearance on a U.S. team this year. Carlson finished 30th at the IAAF Road Running Championships in Debrecen, Hungary on October 8. Additional season highlights for Carlson include a third place finish at the USA 20 km Championships and a seventh place finish at the USA 5 km Championships.
Josh Moen (Rochester Hills, Mich.) - The anchor leg for last year's third-place team at Chiba, the five-time NCAA Division III champion for Wartburg College, will represent the U.S. for the second time at Chiba. Moen's top performances in 2006 include a runner-up finish at the Steamboat Classic 4 Mile and a sixth place finish at the USA 5 km Championships.
Ed Moran (Williamsburg, Va.) - A four-time All-American at William and Mary, Moran finished sixth in the 5,000 meters at the AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis in June. Also showing a great deal of promise at the 10 km distance, he ran 28:43 to finish eighth at the internationally competitive Beach to Beacon 10K in Cape Elizabeth, Maine in August.
Ryan Sheehan (Rochester Hills, Mich.) - A two-time NCAA Division I All-American at Saint Francis University and Hansons - Brooks teammate to Moen, Sheehan recently won the Food World Senior Bowl 10K in Mobile, Ala., with a time of 29:02.
Patrick Tarpy (Yarmouth, Maine) - A 2005 graduate of Brown University, Tarpy recently finished third, just three seconds behind Alan Webb, at the B.A.A. Mayor's Cup Cross Country. The two-time All-Ivy League athlete earned his way to Chiba with a tenth place finish at the 2006 USA 5 km Championships.
Fernando Cabada (Bristol, Va.) - The 2006 USA 25 km champion and American Record holder, Cabada is making his second trip to the Chiba Ekiden, this one as a team alternate, as he prepares for his marathon debut ten days later in Fukuoka.
Women
Desiree Davila (Rochester Hills, Mich.) - A member of the Hansons - Brooks Distance Project, Davila was a cross country and track All-American at Arizona State University, and ran a 20 km personal best to finish 43rd at the IAAF World Road Running Championships.
Caroline Cretti (Blowing Rock, N.C.) - An NCAA Division III champion at 5,000 and 10,000 meters at Williams College, Cretti earned her spot on the U.S. team by virtue of her 12th place finish at the USA Women's 10 km Championship.
Collette Douglas (Indianapolis, Ind.) - The 2001 USA Indoor Championships Mile and 2001 USA Women's 5 km champion ran to a 13th-place finish at the USA Women's 10 km Championships in Boston last month. After competing at the NACAC Cross Country Championships earlier this year, this will mark the second Team USA appearance for Douglas in 2006.
Renee Gunning (Philadelphia, Pa.) - A former North Carolina State University standout, Gunning saw success at the 2006 USA 5 km and 10 km Championships where she ran personal bests of 16:31 and 35:00 for the road events to finish seventh and tenth respectively. This will mark her first time representing Team USA.
Jody Hawkins (Frisco, Texas) - The head cross country coach at Centennial High School in Texas, Hawkins is no stranger to U.S. teams. Making her first Team USA for the Barcelona Ekiden Relay in 1990, the 2006 team will mark her third time at Chiba and her fifth Team USA appearance. A five-time All-American at the University of Texas San Antonio, Hawkins recently ran 16:15 to win the Gary Burns 5K.
Stephanie Pezullo (Blowing Rock, N.C.) - A first year athlete at ZAP Fitness, Pezullo saw breakthrough races at virtually every distance running personal bests at 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters as well as attempting her first ever 5,000 meters on the track (16:23). Pezullo began her 2006 fall campaign with an 11th place finish at the USA Women's 10 km Championship at the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women.
The 2006 Team USA staff will include Dennis Barker (St. Paul, Minn.), Bob Sevene (Monterey, Calif.) and Sam Grotewold (New York, N.Y.).

NCAA looking at conducting all three cross country championships at one site (http://www.tribstar.com/sports/local_story_322005308.html)
TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State is locked in as host for the 2007 NCAA Championships, but Terre Haute has the potential to be the host for a collegiate cross country festival of sorts, liaison of the NCAA cross country committee Mark Bockelman said Friday after the committee's meeting at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
Among the options the committee will explore in the future is having the Division I, II and III NCAA Championships at one site.

Calvin has SIX All-Americans.
I cannot imagine Calvin did not win the men's race with 6 A-A's
They only score 5 and letsrun.com says "Cortland Wins! 5 in top 30!" Could be a goof, letsrun generally sucks.
No final result yet, but included in those 6 all-americans were #2 and #4 in Finnegan and Gries (?) according to announcer. Only once before in history has a team had 6 all-americans -- Calvin in 2003. Their raw score was 52 or 53. Could be an NCAA record, according to the announcer.
Overly-excited runners and coaches are saying things like "greatest performance in the history of DIII."
Pretty bizarre internet broadcast of the race, eh? The announcer was running around so much he couldn't talk for panting.
The conditions were wet, sloppy, and muddy, and the Calvin team didn't have enough long spikes along. They're transferring spikes to the Women's team now.
With the new system 55 points or so would be the greatest performance ever in D3. I think Christisan was ahead of Gries.
Yout is a beast.
Women's race is at the one mile mark.
Very sloppy course.

The coaches said in the season preview that they would be disappointed with anything less than a top-4 finish for the women. They repeated before the NCAA finals that with a good race they should move up a few spots from #7.
Having had the pleasure of watching Calvin run in three races this season, I was
not surprised by either the men's or women's performances today at D-III
nationals. In fact, after the final MIAA Jamboree at Alma, when the Calvin women
went 1-5 for 15 pts, I really thought that they were underrated. Congrats! are in
order for the entire Calvin program.
Probably more surprising than the women's 3rd place finish was that they were so close to finishing 1st; I don't think you'd have been scoffed at if you told someone before the race that the Calvin women would be on the podium, but you might have been if you said they'd be five points from the championship.

Zwagerman was injured this season, and Reynolds is taking some time off of running. Early in the season that left a gap. When the sophomores DeHaan and Van Kampen stepped up late in the season, it put the nails in the coffin of Calvin's competition, so to speak. With losing their two seniors (Finnegan and Jorritsma). that will leave 5 of Calvin's top seven as returners next year. And there are some hungry under-classmen waiting for their chance... so things look positive for the Knights for next season.

UW-L runners get stuck in mud at national meet
By the Tribune staff
WEST CHESTER, Ohio ó The UW-La Crosse men's cross country went into Saturday's NCAA Division III national meet with visions of repeating as national champions.
But the Eagles' hopes literally got stuck in the mud as they finished 11th as a team at Voice of America Park.
"They got about 3 inches of rain and were pumping water off the course all day yesterday," said UW-L men's coach Don Fritsch, whose team went into the meet ranked second in Division III.
"By the time we came back today, some the lakes they drained yesterday were full of water again. There were parts of the course that were knee-deep in water. It was a disaster."
Calvin College captured the men's title with 37 points, followed by New York State University with 92. The Eagles were 11th with 319.
Macharia Yuot of Widener won the men's individual national title, covering the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes, 31 seconds.
UW-L's top finisher was Paul Moran, who finished 56th (28:05).
Because of the sloppy conditions, Fritsch said it was essential for the Eagles to get out front at the start of the race. But that didn't happen.
"The guys knew they had to get out front fast, but the middle of course was just so muddy and greasy and runners were falling and guys had to jump over people and to try to stay on their feet," Fritsch said.
"If you didn't get out front at the start, you were out of luck, and that's what happened to us. The race for us was over after about a quarter of it."
A slow start also proved costly for the UW-L women, who finished 15th.
"The course was so muddy," said UW-L women's coach Pat Healy, whose team was ranked 11th nationally. "It was ankle-deep mud and we just didn't get rolling early.
"We had a great season, it just end as well as we wanted."
Five points separated the top three teams in the women's race. Middlebury (144 points) edged Amherst (145) and Calvin (149).
The Eagles finished with 434 points.
Sarah Zeran of Willamette won the women's race with a time of 22:31 on the 6,000-meter course.
UW-L's top finisher was Kristen Painter, who placed 61st (24:23).
Thanks for the post, Oval.
But memo to coaches Fritsch and Healy: I don't think the other runners were on some dryer, better course! You two sound a bit whiny.
Or perhaps you think that the 10 men's and 14 women's teams that finished ahead of you unfairly train by running through swamps? (Actually, sounds like a plan! ;D)
Calvin's Eric Van Kampen was in 40th place with a mile to go on Saturday. He passed 23 runners in the last mile to finish 17th. Incredible!!

It's a coach's job to set a bar for their team to reach.
Sometimes that bar is purposely placed insanely high and impossible to clear in order to push an already accomplished squad to bigger and better things.
Leading up to the NCAA Division III National Cross-Country Meet, UW-Oshkosh men's coach John Zupanc and women's coach Deb Vercauteren laid out their expectations for their charges – a top 10 finish for the men's squad and All-American honors for women's team representative Jenny Graef.....

WEST CHESTER, Ohio — The Middlebury women's cross country team has won its fourth NCAA Championship. The Panthers did so with 144 points, just one point ahead of NESCAC foe Amherst in the 32-team event. Fellow NESCAC teams Tufts (fifth) and Williams (eighth) were also in the top 10.
The race took place at the Voice of America Park, hosted by Wilmington on Saturday. The NCAA Championship is the 27th for Middlebury College in the last 12 years in all sports.
"These were the most difficult conditions we've ever run in," said 32-year head coach Terry Aldrich. "There was standing water throughout the course, with our racers having to run in 6-to-8-inch deep mud at times."......
Macharia Yuot (Widener) followed Saturday's muddy run to a D3 XC title with a 7th place finish in the Philadelphia Marathon (http://www.philadelphiamarathon.com/exec/philly/home/default.asp).

Intersting information about D3'ers at the D1 XC race from the T&F News discussion board (http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discussion/viewtopic.php?t=23054).
Arnie Schraeder (W-Stevens Point) was 11th in 1986; 45 seconds behind the winner Aaron Ramirez (Arizona). Joe Falcon (Arkansas) was leading before tripping over a water sprinkler.
In 1978, Dan Henderson (Wheaton, IL) won the D3 XC meet on a Saturday in Rock Island, IL and then placed 10th on Monday at the D1 meet in WI, less than 20 seconds behind champion Alberto Salazar. The top-10 included two future Olympic medalists and three future US Olympians.
Rudy Chapa, Jim Spivey, Billy McChesney and Henry Rono finished out of the top-10.
Henderson is the only D3 runner to finish in the top-10 at the D1 meet. He ran 13:23 (5k) and 28:02 (10k) before retiring.
More information about D3'ers at the D1 XC race from the T&F News discussion board (http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discussion/viewtopic.php?t=23054).
In strict terms that's true, although back in the day before there was a Div. III note these finishes (not necessarily an all-inclusive list):
1950 -- David Allison (Wooster) 3rd (5th in '51)
1953 -- Kikuyo Moryia (Wheaton, IL) 5th
1966 -- Ambrose Burfoot (Wesleyan) 6th (6th again in '67)
-- Bob Fitts (Cortland State) 9th
actually yuot was 6th place finisher, there is a person listed in the results with a chip time of 1:59 which is throwing everything off
Any top-end Cross Country runners NOT eligible for indoor or outdoor Track and Field?
yes, yuot, thats really all that matters/all i know, this xc season was an extra season of elibibility from a red shirt year a few seasons back, but his track career ended with his triple victory at nationals last year.
Harrison Jorristma (Calvin) will not be back in the spring.

So I was just wondering what type of mileage everyone does or did, and what program they ran for. Also if possible compare to your weekly mileage in high school.

Calvin College, Leer head Division III All-Academic Men's Cross Country class
Calvin College was the class of Division III cross country last fall, winning the NCAA men's team championship by a large margin.
The Knights excelled in class, too, compiling a cumulative team grade point average for 3.430. By meeting both challenges, Calvin is the 2006 NCAA Division III All-Academic Men's Cross Country Team of the Year.
The All-Academic Men's Cross Country Team of the Year is awarded to the highest-finishing school at the NCAA Division III Championships that meets All-Academic team qualifications (a minimum 3.1 cumulative GPA).
Pomona-Pitzer senior Will Leer, a senior majoring in mathematics, is the Division III All-Academic Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year. The announcements were made Monday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The All-Academic Athlete of the Year is awarded to the highest finisher at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships who meets the minimum qualifications for All-Academic individual honors (3.5 cumulative GPA).
Leer, the seventh-place finisher at the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships in West Chester, Ohio, has a 3.527 GPA.
Calvin won the NCAA men's team championship with 37 points, far in front of runner-up New York University (92 points). Calvin had three runners earn All-Academic individual honors – Erik VanKampen, Harrison Jorritsma and Jon Gries.
To be honored as an All-Academic Cross Country Team, Division III schools needed a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.1. Eighty-six men's teams earned All-Academic Team honors.
Eastern Mennonite University had a cumulative team GPA of 3.910.
To earn Division III All-Academic individual honors, runners had to maintain a cumulative GPA of at 3.5 or higher. A total of 108 student-athletes earned Division III All-Academic Men's Cross Country honors.
Saint John's University (Minnesota), Luther College and Brandeis University each had four runners earn All-Academic individual honors.
Middlebury College is the NCAA Division III All-Academic Women's Cross Country Team of the Year. Willamette University's Sarah Zerzan is the Division III All-Academic Women's Athlete of the Year.

Props to all the Academic All Americans....
Anyway I was just wondering what everyone here does for mileage during their summer base training, either their average or peek (but please clarify) also compare this to your high school training.

Could Calvin be the pre-season #1 ranked team on the men's and women's side?
I'd think the men would get the pre-season #1 ranking, with 5 of the top 7 returning from last year's dominant (and deep) team.
I don't think the women will get a #1 pre-season ranking, though. Only one of the three All Americans is returning from last year's third-place team. They have some promising upcoming runners, but you don't get a high pre-season ranking on that basis alone.

I'm not sure if either Oshkosh team can be their traditional national contending (the women, at least) ways this season. I hope I'm proven wrong.
The women just don't have the depth and could miss nationals for the second straight season. Keep an eye on freshman Ayla Mitchell, though. She placed second at Calvin. After a rough two years for Oshkosh, Mitchell could lead that team back to near the top. But not this year.
The Oshkosh men are without their top runner from last year, Willy Kaul, who has a nagging injury from the track season and will not run CC this year. There's a lot of quality depth on the roster, but without Kaul, who was fourth at 2006 nationals, I think they'll finish in the mid-teens.

Looks like Mitchell (New Richmond HS, WI) could be a transfer from the University of Minnesota? If so she's a beast on the track as well (and not a frosh).

Speaking of Oshkosh and transfers .... did 2007 D3 400m champion Amanda Donath transfer to Madison, or anywhere else?

I'm an idiot . . . I can't find a tutorial that explains how to set up a nice table/list . . . help anyone?
I tend to make it look all pretty in Notepad...or something that doesn't use a truetype font. Use spaces instead of tabs. Then, copy and paste the text between {pre}{/pre} tags (Use the box brackets instead of the curly brackets...it's the eighth button in the top row of BBC tags).

From the Oxy website:
Chaves Runs Ahead of the West, Men's Cross Country Advances to Nationals
Portland, Ore. (November 10, 2007)
Occidental men's cross country team is not satisfied with a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship. Today the Tigers competed against the best runners in the West Region, finishing second and earning a ticket to the NCAA National Championships. The women's team came up short of qualifying after placing fifth at the meet.
Kevin Chaves, in the home stretch of his senior season, is running past his opponents no matter the venue. After placing first at the SCIAC Championship meet two weeks ago, earning SCIAC Runner of the Year honors, Chaves continued along the same path. His time of 24:34.85 was faster than any other competitor.
All five of the Oxy scorers finished the 8K in the top 30. Twenty-five seconds after Chaves clinched the top spot, Tiger teammate Alex Ramon crossed the finish line at 24:59.35, for fourth place. Rounding out the Oxy scoring was Keith Blumenfeld (14th, 25:45.40), Galen Smith (24th, 26:07.45) and David Martinez (29th, 26:23.75).
Occidental College runners averaged 25:34.16, less than three seconds behind West Regional champion Willamette University (25:32.73).
The female Tiger harriers were again led by sophomore Maddie Weissman, who clocked in at 22:50.60, for 14th place. The next Tiger across the finish line was Grace Peck (23:10.70), followed closely by Denali Halsey (23:21.95). Rachely Keylon (23:59.75) and Caitlin Coall (24:24.40) also scored for Oxy.
The women averaged a time of 23:33.48, placing sixth in the region. The top two teams, Willamette University and the University of Puget Sound, will represent the West at Nationals.
Two weeks ago the Tigers were competing against the SCIAC; today they competed against the West Region, and two weeks from now the men will be back out on the course competing against the best runners in the nation.
The NCAA National Championships will be held on Sat., Nov. 17 in Northfield, Minn. The races will begin at 11 a.m.

Even with a tough race on the men's side Calvin reaffirms their dominance of D3 XC.
Interesting to note that Cortland was actually decently ahead of NYU through 4 runners, were this world xc scoring they would have easily been the national champs. However it is not, and props to the violets for a great season. Had Jon Phillips been really healthy they could have been even more dominent. I know that this is not what he wanted individually when he decided to come back, but the real goal was a national title and that is what they got.
Hay
the boy....uh...son... called the other night and said Huntindon (GSAC-all sports except football-SLIAC) is starting a cross country team within the next 2 yrs
i am farly sure no one kin to me will ever compete in such a worthy sport as it requires some aerobic athletic ability
just thought i share
keep the faith
In response to the reaffirmation of Calvin's dominance, I would have to disagree. Seeing as their Mens team was ranked number 1 all season and the women number 2 with first place votes throughout the first half of the season, two fourth place finishes would be a sign of a bit of a slip. I understand that it seems ridiculous to say a team is slipping after two podium finishes, but in this case it is a small slide.

Even with the slip they still dominate the D3.
Does any school (with mens and women's teams) have a bigger difference in talent level/accomplishment than NYU.
NYU Men - win national championship
NYU Women - quite possibly in the bottom 10-15 teams in the country

Are both teams coached by the same staff?
No not at all. They have two entirely different staffs, they go to different meets, except for UAA's and regionals, and as such have very different results.
Nick Mcdonough (sp) who coaches the Men's team graduated from syracuse in the early 90's and has implemented a high mileage program at NYU that has resulted in obvious success.
The women's coach I believe has more of a background in sprinting although I am not positive. But clearly recruiting is not where it could be considering Nick usually brings in some of the top talent from NJ on an annual basis.

Does any school (with mens and women's teams) have a bigger difference in talent level/accomplishment than NYU.
NYU Men - win national championship
NYU Women - quite possibly in the bottom 10-15 teams in the country
I'm trying to figure out how cross country practice in New York works. Take the subway up to Central Park?
Seriously? No, run up to central park, around and back. Workouts there or at Van Cortland. I mean I am not positive but I am guessing based off of interviews on track shark etc.
I bet while working out in Central Park at night the athletes would tend to run faster.
yeah maybe, but they run at a normal hour, how many teams run their practice at night, and not more in the 3-6pm range
Congratulations to all.

Hey everyone, I figured this would be a good place to post a little plug. Every monday I write an article called What's to see in D3 on Flotrack.org . If you are interested in D3 running, you may want to give it a glance, as I recap the previous weekend's action and show a bit of its impact on the field of 32 for nationals.
not a lot of traffic here...and i have only a very limited idea what cross country is... one look at me, and anyone would instantly know i am not a runner ;D
but from the Huntingdon web site:
November 1, 2008
Huntingdon Men's Cross Country Team Puts Exclamation Point on Inaugural Season With GSAC Championship; Lady Hawks Finish Second at GSAC Meet
MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Huntingdon men's cross country team capped its inaugural season by winning the Great South Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship on Saturday afternoon, while the Lady Hawks finished second on the women's side.
"I am so proud of these young men and women," head coach Nate Rucker said. "Our goal at the beginning of the season was to compete for a conference championship and I felt like both teams had a great opportunity to do that. The guys were able to come out on top, but our women ran just as well. These student-athletes have set a very high standard for the future of Huntingdon cross country."
The Hawks finished with 25 points, finishing five points ahead of runner-up Maryville. Huntingdon placed three runners in the top five, as senior Sean Sinclair finished second, junior Kent Hagan finished third and freshman Jeff Jenkins finished fifth.
Sinclair, who finished behind only Piedmont's Michael Fidero, recorded a time 29:41 on the 8K track. Hagan posted a time of 30:13, while Jenkins finished with a time of 31:09.
Freshman Evan Massey finished 11th with a time of 32:42, while junior Hall Copeland rounded out the scoring with a time of 33:58.
On the women's side, freshman Caitlin McMahon was the overall winner of the meet, recording a time of 26:31 on the 6K course. Freshman Sheaney Marshall and Jackie Daniels also finished in the top-five, finishing third and fourth, respectively, with times of 27:11 and 27:18.
Sophomore Kylie Piercy recorded a time of 30:43 and finished 18th, while junior Kelly Frazier finished 22nd with a time of 31:06.
Also running for the Lady Hawks were junior April Morrow and senior Kim Butler, who finished with times of 32:38 and 36:57, respectively.
Maryville captured the women's team title with 45 points, while Huntingdon finished three points behind with 48. Spelman rounded out the top-three with 86 points.
way to go cross country running Hawks :D

Annoying how the article omits Ebel's track role. Also could have been two stories or just written better. It doesn't say when they'll retire until the eighth paragraph. Interesting choice.

NCF.....aware you.chat with Vandy74 and are aware of the Nescac. Xcountry was not a big thing for me...was a short distance man myself and left the long distances to my older brother. My brother at Harvard had a cross country runner from Kansas as a roommate for all 4 years. Anyway...had lunch with an old friend...cross country runner for Johns Hopkins...and he brought up the subject of the sport. Very happy that JHU placed 3 rd last season in the NCAA. See that this season, both JHU and Williams are rated very high in the pre- season polls.
Since your school has dominated the NCAA for decades and since you are familiar with the CAC....friends attending Wes?....I am interested on your take of the conference quality of teams.

Al Carius is the main reason North Central dominates in cross-country and distance events in track. Although my son was a hurdler/sprinter, he said Al was one of the best coaches/motivators that he's ever had. Carius brings out the best in every athlete. He is genuinely concerned about every athlete both on and off the track. As far as the person attending Wes, he wrestled with my son since they were in youth wrestling and they also played football together in high school. As far as the quality of other teams, distance wise, I will have to get back to you on that.
Cardinals start the season ranked 2nd:

Congrats!!!!!
Good luck to th North Central men's cross country team as they compete for another National Championship today.
Congrats to North Central who recently won their 18th National D3 Cross Country Championship. The Cardinals finished with 57 points. Runner up Wisconsin-LaCrosse was a distant second with 196 points. The margin of victory was the 2nd largest in the history of the event, and the championship was NCC's 5th in the last 8 years.
2018. Another year-same result. North Central wins it's 19th national championship, and 3rd in a row, scoring 43 points compared to runner up Wash U with 110. 8-)
Congratulations to the WashU in St. Louis Men's Cross Country team on being selected to participate in the 2019 NCAA D3 Championships. And to the WashU Women's Cross Country team on their selection to the 2019 NCAA D3 Regionals.
