Yeah Bethany's defanitly right on that. I was just watched Elms practice and they werent hitting too many shots.
Elms is still a decent team though. Yes Salem is better but Salem also tends to play down to their competition. And Salem has not played too many hard out of league teams let me remind you....I will root for the underdog, but i highly doubt that Salem will blow them out.
Yeah...the reason I said what I said was because of the loss I saw to MCLA....Potsdam blew them out.
SSC 74 Elms 71
Sounds like a good 1
Was anyone at the Salem game that can give us some pointers on what happened...I went to the Salem site hoping for some info not realizing that their website is still in the stone ages.
How about a write up by someone?
I was at the game...and yes it was a good game, but I don't think I can give you any pointers. If Potsdam is a dirty team, depending on the refs, you might have an easy game. Salem plays a good game and they play clean. Elms played dirty tonight and got away with it in the first half. Salem stepped up their game in the second half, fighting for the win.
The way to beat salem is to play physical with them
Physical...Dirty...samething...but Salem knows how to handle it and eventually the fouls get called on the right team. Salem is a strong second half team, they can always come back.
Dirty? Elms?
The only thing that was dirty was the refs. Salem was lucky when it came to the calls....the refs called 14 second half fouls on Elms and 4 on Salem.
#34 for SSC committed at least three offensive fouls that weren't called to boot....but that's home cooking for a game that should have been at a neutral site.
Honestly, this was a great game that was really tight all second half. Elms led by one at the break and at most by 7, and Salem led by 6. SSC made the plays when they had to- plus the Vikes made their freebies to escape.
Elms gets major props for playing a great game and having a great season and playing a very good team all-out on their home court. The Blazers have come a long way from 2-21 four years ago...they'll be a force next year- just check their non-conference results.
Good luck to Salem in the second round.
I guess Salem found out Elms was a little better than they expected. I was going to post yesterday and combat the "blowout" theory, but Elms is also streaky enough that if I had done that, they would have crumbled like a Turkish building in an earthquake.
Good win for Salem, but they will have to step up the game to pre-Christmas form after the long drive to Potsdam.
Potsdam has nine guys who play pretty evenly and spread the scoring among all of them. Like like to run and wear teams out. It could be a lot like that early UMASS-Boston loss, except will a team that can actually play.
I know Salem likes to run too, so this would be a great game to go watch if it weren't so God-awfully far from everything.
MSN maps lists both the shortest and quickest routes from Salem to Potsdam through VErmont and involving a Lake Champlain Ferry... that is a bit rediculous.
Yeah...Potsdam is fast and physical. If the two big guys from Salem are light weights they may have problems. Potsdam is a team that lives in the weight room.
Potsdam has 9 guys that all want to run all night so it should be a fun game if Salem has the legs to run with them. Having Salems two big guys on the floor will give you an advantage on interior defense...but can they run the break all night?
Potsdam does not get much love from officials so it shouldnt be any problems with home cooking. Potsdam is big, strong, and fast. And they sub constantly. Its often hard for other teams to even keep up with knowing who they are defending.
What will be different about Salem than other teams Potsdam plays is that your Ife can play our Eldon straight up...wheras most teams need to double and triple him down.
My prediction is this....Your little guy Victor will have a good game...your power forward will have a good game. Your all stars will be frustrated and shoot poorly. Your shooting guard and small forward...both great shooters from the sounds of things will be meeting up with Jim Connely and Edane Barton...shut down defenders. And Edane will make someone run all night(whomever is defending him) I am guessing Bloom will pull the assignment of Edane Barton and from the things I hear he will need to call for help all night. He will need some great ankles and knees to even get a good look at some of the craziness that Edane brings.
Your big guys will probably frustrate Potsdams normally dominant inside game. But Potsdam is bringing a busload of three point shooters so it shouuld be good times for all.
I am looking for the game to be even at half time and Potsdam to win by 13. Potsdam's power forward CHristian Turner will probably foul out but he will cause havoc all the time he is in. He is a monster on defense and essentially plays like a 6'7-6'8 small forward. He is fast and aggravating and angry and hyperactive all at once and generally gets under the skin of everyone on the opposing team. The refs tend to hate him too though...so we shall see.
What do you Salemites think. We of course have not seen each other..so its hard to know.
I will agree with you that it is hard to know how each team will play when they meet on Saturday night. Both Salem and Potsdam are equally good teams, or they wouldn't be where they are. Salem will have to step up their game and play like they did against Framingham on the 26th. Knowing that officals seem to treat Potsdam the same way Salem gets treated when they play at home, this should make for a really good match up. Its a shame its so far away, because this is a game I'd like to be at.
As long as Bloom, Reid, and Victor play at the top of their game and are consistant, they'll give Potsdam a run for their money. But Potsdam has a height advantage on Salem, which might cause a slight problem.
I can't predict whos going to win and I don't think that I want to either, because as I said before both teams have a fair shot and they are equally good. Its all up to how well they play on Saturday night.

How often does Bloom play an accomplished defender that is athletic enough to stay with him all night? How about Reid?
We have a player that is a lot like Victor only taller. So I would say that Victor will probably play well. But I think that Redi and Bloom will both be frustrated all night. They wont be used to how fast and strong Potsdam is. Potsdam is also quite physical and very muscular at most positions.
Yes, if i recall one during salem's league contests Bloom struggled against westfield st...They covered him with a 6'2 wingman who was pretty athletic....At westfield he recorded 0 points....But anyways i dont see a great hieght advantage for Potsdam.....Salem starts 6'9,6'8 and 6'5 and another 6'5 and 6'6 big guy off the bench in Rider and Gentiliotti....But i think Potsdam will win......I think reid will have a good game, he is a senior who will not back down from anything...But for the rest it is up to Potsdam
Bloom was also suffering an ankle injury for a while there, he sat out of the MCLA game. Hes recovered quite nicely and now is back his powerhouse self.
Mustang23, who is Rider? there is no Rider on SSC's roster
Im sorry i meant Bradshaw
Potsdam is a lot more "big" than tall. They are large muscular and fast. If the two big men from Salem are the light weights that it sounds like they are...they will get knocked around like a pinball.
Potsdam out rebounds teams by about +9.5 a game. Potsdam sometimes has more offensive rebounds than other teams have rebounds. We have two guys that live for O boards.
Now Salem is very tall. And from what people have said...they can run. So...from a fan perspective it should be a fun game to watch.
My predition again....It will be even or Salem up at half time. Potsdam will win by 13. Edane Barton will abuse whoever is defending him and either put up 20-25 pts...or a double double.
All that and he probably wont even start.
Anybody see the game it was a one point win it must have been a good one....
It sounded extremely evenly matched, as you might expect from two 25-3 teams. Congrats to the Vikings on a great year.
I saw the game and it was a good one. Wilkins Victor was good, probably the quickest Potsdam has faced. And the backup Willie Philips was pretty quick too. I don't think either team liked the officials but nobody ever does. For what it's worth Potsdam had 10 fouls with 10 minutes left in the game. At one point the foul situation was 9-2 in favor of Salem. The biggest lead was 6 points by Salem twice, once in each half. Potsdam never led by more than 4. Potsdam led by 1 at the half. Salem led most of the game though there was 16 ties. It seemed like Potsdam didn't shoot very well with the exception of one second half spurt. But they scored big during that spurt and hit the free throws at the end. A great game to watch.
Well it seems as though the stars for each team didnt produce too much, which probably means they were scouted well....For SSC Anosike only had 10 pts and 6 rebs. and 2 blocks where he averages 12 rebs. and 4 blks per game and he only played 21 min......Reid also only had 9 pts and Bloom only had 6 ....For Potsdam the hyped Barton only had 5 or something
Anosike lost a contact lens on a collision under the hoop, and probably sat in the first half for two or three minutes until they found his spare. Then he came back into the game and got his second foul right away. He got two quick fouls in the second half and sat until the last two or three minutes. Potsdam's two big men were sitting in the first half from 10 minutes on due to foul trouble.
Potsdam won because of a huge second half from Ernst Ducena. he hit 5x7 from the arc, and also played great defense. Salem gave Potsdam lots of trouble with their zone and their athleticism
Ducena made three treys and Ryan Lynn a fourth in a two and half minute stretch of the second half to take Potsdam from a 5 point deficit to a two point lead. From there out it was hammer and tongs defense and a foul shooting contest, which Potsdam won.
Kudos to Michael Brooks. With both Potsdam starters on the bench, he came into the game and played 18 first half minutes. He had 9 first half rebounds with a great display of hands and boxing out. He kept Potsdam alive in the first half with his rebounding and post defense.
Potsdam defensive ace Ryan Lynn blanketed Reid. Most of Reid's points came on loose ball scrambles or FT's.
Barton contributed, Potsdam had 8 guys play at least 20 minutes, and they showed why they're an excellent team, stop one player and a couple others will beat you.
Potsdam & Fisher - The one we've been waiting for all season, Potsdam, (Only NYS D-III team to finish a season unbeaten) needs to get it done. they've done it twice before against Hamilton, knocking off a top ranked team in the post-season.
Anosike seemed bigger than 6'8. Wilkins Victor is one the fastest points guards I have seen at this level. He truly can get himself open for a shot.
Tyler Lang had a great game.
Christian Turner only played about a minute of the first half. THis was a big deal for Potsdam in the first half in attempting to guard Lang. Edane Barton at 6'3 even guarded Lang a bit.
Its hard to have Edane Barton in...when Ernst is shooting the lights out. You gotta stay with whats Hot.
Evril Clayton seemed to have another poor game. He is due for a break out night.
Yeah other than Wilkins Victor i have seen very few guards in D3 that had his speed....In the beginning of the year Westifeld State had a PG named Bayete Gordon who would have eaten Victor for breakfast, but i think he failed off the team or something...It would have been a site to see these two play
Because we have so many guards...our guys were able to cope with his speed. Instead of staying with him...they switched constantly on him....and in that way were able to block some of his shoots and give him some turnovers.
I saw the box score it seemed pretty strange...Normally Wilkins doesn't look for his shot, only if he is wide open and if he has to...And normally Reid shoots almost every time he touches it..ANd Lang almost never scores..Very surprising
Wilkins got a lot of layups on drives. Potsdam were so focused stopping the two big guys, & Reid, that Victor was able to drive to the hole.
Reid didn't get that many touches, he was covered very closely. Even when he brought the ball up, he was closely guarded from about 30 feet in, and had several near 5 second calls when he tried to shake & bake.
Bloom DID shoot every time he touched it, many of them terrible shots. IMHO he really hurt Salem with poor shot selection.
Lang had to step up with E only playing 20 minutes. He & Phillips really came to play, which should bode well for the Vikings next year.
When E was out, they went with a lineup of Victor Reid, Phillips, Bloom & Lang. Occasionally for matchup issues, they would play Bradshaw, but Phillips was much more effective.
Salem played great zone for about 35 minutes, unfortunately Potsdam figured it out, set some monster screens and hit four straight threes down the stretch. Salem's small guards, athletic as they are, are a mismatch for an athletic 6'1 jump shooter, particularly when they have to fight through a 6'7 240# screen.
The foul trouble pretty much cancelled, Anosike and Turner both played 20 minutes, best defender vs. stud in the middle. Bloom & Lang fouled out in OT, but part of that was Potsdam focusing on getting the ball inside with Anosike out of the game.
A classic, film should be worth watching.
IMO, Vikes are probably the #2 team in New England after Amherst, and I doubt you would ever see Amherst schedule them. Can't believe WPI or Springfield are any better than Salem. Most athletic physical team we've seen all year.
Well Salem's schedule is pretty weak as is WPI...I would have to say talent wise they are the second best team. But team wise WPI could give them a good run for their money...Salem seems to never schedule anyone in the top 25...They should but dont
My experience says that teams like Salem try to schedule better teams, but no one wants to play them.
You notice Amherst plays a couple of MASCAC teams, but not Salem. Teams like Salem with a coach that's not afraid to recruit JUCO's and inner city kids, and mold them into a team are scary for anyone to play.
I guess that makes since but im sure if not amherst some better teams than the ones they play would schedule them ....their best comp was Tufts, Lasell and UMB (a loss and UMB finished the season with a bad record), and Plymouth state none of which made the tourny, i notice they travel to the bahamas im sure they could play some good comp...but i see where youre coming from...But also teams like Amherst and Williams tend to play good teams out of the region in tournaments and stuff and let me remind you they always have the best comp in their own league...Its like the D3's ACC
SO what are peoples predictions for next year?
A lot of teams are losing guys...
Salem- Ife, Reid are both gone..but im sure they will have some recruits as they always do..
Worcester- Cannon, Sullivan, and their PG's....Drayton is returning
Framingham- Clark, Feeny, Tanglis are all gone..Sully and Wigman return
Westfield- Jaukovic is gone (thier best player)...
Fitchburg- Cope is gone
Bridgewater- Santos, Adamczyck,Badiali, Rondeau, Hayes, and Ryan....thier losing almost everyone
MCLA- Mitchell is gone
My predictions:
Salem, Westfield, Worcester, Framingham, Bridgewater, Fitchburg, MCLA
Anybody heard about any recruits coming in??
Great News MASCAC and D3 hoops fans. I have recieved information from a valid source that MCLA standout guard Robert Mitchell will be playing in the ABA next season. It's always great to hear about D3 players making it in the professionals. Best of luck to Mitchell.
Does anyone know what team he'll be playing for?
I think he got picked up by the Charlotte team
Rumor has it that Salem will be stacked again next year. I have heard that Salems 6'9 center Anosike is returning for another year somehow. Also i have heard that salem is getting Eric Downey a 6'5 transfer from bunker hill who is also a d1 scholarship player. Also they have a kid named reggie alleyene who redshirted last year due to injury but is also a good player.
Well you were right about Eric Downie and Reggie Alleyne being on our roster, but you were wrong in that Anosike is not returning. He returned to Salem, as did Allen Reid but not to basketball.
Thanks for the update. I think Salem is going to have trouble without Anosike this year. Not that they will have trouble winning the MASCAC again, but it will be interesting to see how they perform in their non-conference schedule.
i think they'll be alright with Anosike, but I think they're going to have trouble without Shawn Bloom and Allen Reid
It's certainly a rebuilding year for them, luckily they play in a horrible conference and should still be able to get the NCAA berth.
Congradulations to the MASCAC conference on producing another professional Basketball player. Anosike of Salem will play with the Boston Frenzy this season of the ABA. Best Wishes to Anosike. The qustion must be raised who do you think will have the better rookie season Anosike or Mitchell (MCLA) who plays with Lincoln, NE Thunder?
So is Anosike still taking classes at Salem, as previously reported, or will he give full attention to his budding new career?
he was seen on campus a few weeks ago... but ill see what I can find out
Saw two games tonight. The gordon vs. wsc game. Pretty interesting. Westfield is a run and gun type team with some very good shooters. Not too big at all but has one guy who can block a lot of shots. They could be very good this year.
Framingham was not very impressive compared to last year. They look very unathletic, and slow. Wigman and their PG look pretty good but other than that, thier pretty shallow. Could be a long year for them.
I saw Salem lost, and Westfield won...
Two things. Salem is 1-2 to start the year, when is the last time that happened. They seem to have a down year this year.
Westfield beat Elms by 9. Elms was in the NCAA tourny last year so im sure that bodes well for westfield.
elms mad the ncaa tourney last year cause the got the AQ from the worst conference in America
No elms made the tournament because they were a well coached and taleneted team. If you have ever seen them play they have a lot of talent with most of the kids coming from out of state, the are not to be underrated.
Salem is now 1 and 3 and could easily start 1 and 5 as they have two tough games coming up this week. They looked gross against WPI this afternoon. I guess the days of Jim Todd and Brian Meehan are over. Meehan's recruiting had carried Salem thus far but all great things must end. Salem State made a big mistake when they let Brian Meehan walk away.
Good luck Salem you are going to need all of the help you can get. Look at the banners on the wall and look back at what the program once was and work every day to return it to the same level. Salem has been a power house in New England for two decades. Starting 1 and 3 is no way to represent.
Salem only dressed 10 guys this afternoon. Did the other guys miss the bus?
Fitchburg State College what the hell are they doing pulling their best shooter, Dan Koen, out in the first 2 minutes. he's the captain. also where is al ortix? that nick smith kid what the hell is he doing trying to shoot from outside the box. he is listed at 6'7", 255 ya right buddy ur like 270 use your body and box somebody out get a rebound. Fitchburg shoots themselves in the foot how many turnovers are you going to get in the first half 17 is rediculous. If anyone is going to play you guys i would press the whole game. Also who are your top like 8 guys because your playing the whole bench. Thats not going to win games. Fitchburg needs to find its best players and play them thats it! Fitchburg is lacking in the hieght department. Why are you guys not running the floor? make the other teams tired, you guys should be in shape. brian skiffington plays hard you need to play hard and hustle. whats the deal with the guy with out a jersey? Fitchburg has a good team they need to play the right players, stop turning the ball over!!!!!, and the BIG guys need to stay in the damn paint use your body!!!
salem state just barely got by Newbury college last night .. pulled out a squeaker by only 3 points. i think salem is over-rated..
I would not say over rated because i do not believe that many people have rated them highly this year. I say that the mascac title is up in the air this year....Worcester seems to be doing well and competing with everyone. Bridgewater is always decent plus their big man Lang (transfer from ssc) just started to play again. Westfield is doing pretty well, except for the blowouts by williams and amherst. And framingham seems to have beaten some pretty good teams as well. It has been an interesting month.
Who are you kidding framingham state wat a joke.. nice football team too.. anyways the real FSC just stomped on nichols 73-58.. keep sleepin on fitchburg i guess they do suck... framingham hasnt played a real team yet.. bridgewater and westfield are ok.. well find out when they come to da burg..
Ok please get off Fitchburg like they are any good. They havnt made the conference tournament in a while. I mean the conference tournament, not the NCAA's. They lost to amherst by 50 something, thats just dispicable. They have a couple young kids with talent, but they are not deserving of any respect yet.
How about Jurkowski from westfield. This kid has to be legit, dropppin 34 and 17...
Even though they're down, I think its still Salem's to lose for one for season anyway. Framingham, Fitchburg and Westfield all have up and coming teams, but I'm not sure they've shown enough consistency to be threats just yet. That's not to say they can't win, but it would still be a major upset for anyone other than Salem to get into the tournament. The league is coming together though, it should be quite competitive for the next few years.
I completely agree. However i do believe that Salem is more likely than ever to lose it this year. Given Salem has played a pretty tough schedule, but they got blown out to WPI which worcester only loss by 8 in OT. It will be a big test coming up when they face Williams. I could see westield, bridgewater and worcester posibbly upsetting them throughout the year, but by far salem is still the favorite.
This chat is dead....Anyone got any good news...Salem lost to Bridgewater....I could see someone else taking it this year.
Bridgewater has been the best team all year, but the whole conference is way, way down.
Bridgewater is definitely in the drivers seat after beating both salem state and blowing out worcester state in worcester.....the game of the week though is tomorrow night against Westfield though because they have already lost to them once. Although I think Westfield will be surprised because they are playing a Bridgewater team that is now playing up to their potential and at a whole new level.
Yes this should be an interesting game. If i recall westfield blew them out last time, however as you said i think BSC is a much improved team. This well definitly determine the 2nd place team tonight, and a team that could possibly beat out ssc for the NCAA tourny this yr.
Westfield sweeps BSC for the season series to take sole posession of 2nd place. SO much for bridgewater being the best team.
Well maybe Salem will back into another title after all.
Actually bridgewater can still get the two seed if westfield loses to salem and worcester again...so hopefully tyson comes back for worcester and they'll take that game. Worcester and Salem are the only two strong teams Bridgewater has left to play. And if you were at the game or looked at the stats you would know that other than D-Thomp no one played well and they still led for most of the game. The seed doesn't matter because as long as the Bridge makes it to the playoffs they have a chance to beat anyone and I think they proved it by beating Salem even though they lost to Westfield again.
Looks like Westfield may be legit for the 2 spot. They will play SSC on tuesday, what a big game that will be....always tough to win at salem though. If westfield wins, there will be a tie for first place.
Westfield took care of salem state in salem tonight, 88-73. WSC came out storming and led by as many as 20 in the first half, before going into the half with an 11 point lead. Junior pg Gavin Illangakoon exploded for 39 on 11 of 16 shooting. The spread was cut to 6 with about 9 minutes left, but westfield pulled away down the stretch. Westfield is now in sole possession of first place in the MASCAC at 7-2. Salem fell to 6-2 in conference. Eric Downie dropped 20 for the vikings.
Worcester state got a hardfought overtime win, 77-71 over visiting Framingham State tonight. Guard Ryan Hopkins scored 26, and big man Winfred Rambert had quite a game for himself with 20 points and 19 boards, 11 offensive. Junior 3 man Derek Wigman dropped 26 for the rams, playing all 45 minutes. Senior captain Tony Washington added 14 off the bench. WSC improves to 5-4 in the conference while FSC slips to 3-6.
No surprise here as Bridgewater ran over MCLA 97-62. BSC had five players in double figures, paced by Derek Thompson's 21 points in 21 minutes. BSC improves to 6-3 in the MASCAC.
This may be the time for westfield to win. However they will have to win in the tournament, and would most likely not get an at large bid.
Whats up with the MASCAC this year, wow. Both salem and westfield loose. Why is it that westfield seems to never win in the first round of the playoffs? And how does salem have so much talent and loose by 15?
Wow, Bridgewater to the dance? I so called that back in November, too bad I thought I was wrong last week. Oh well. Congrats.
Westfield was overated and played like the know how, that's why they lost. Salem on the other hand might as well be the And 1 street team because they don't play like a team. In the end even with Downey scoring 40 they still couldn't pull out a win without a supporting cast. I'd also look for the Bridgewater WPI game to be a good one cuz BSC was missing Lang and did not have Roland at the time. Their a completely different team and I think they proved it by beating Salem and winning the championship.
Bridgewater is good, but I'm not sure beating WPI, who is actually playing well right now, is in the cards.
How the worst team in the Northeast region who has at least one in region win (3-22 overall), can beat Duke based on looking at scores.
MCLA (MASCAC) to Duke (ACC)
MCLA beat Fitchburg St. by 4
Fitchburg St. beat Newbury by 4
Newbury beat Roger Williams by 20
Roger Williams beat Curry by 5
Curry beat Trinity by 5
Trinity beat Amherst by 3
Amherst beat Pomona-Pitzer by 19
Pomona-Pitzer beat Whitworth by 4
Whitworth beat Puget Sound by 24
Puget Sound beat UC Riverside by 4
UC Riverside beat Pacific by 8
Pacific beat Texas A&M by 7
Texas A&M beat Texas by 3
Texas beat West Virginia by 1
West Virginia beat Georgetown by 13
Georgetown beat Duke by 3
Duke is currently #1 (until Monday)
Any word on any recruits for next year?
I have heard Salem will be stacked again this year. They have all returners, including star Eric Downie. As far as reloading I have heard they have Marquis Victor a 6'2 transfer who played at Assumption as well as Juco for a year. Also, Jeremy Taitt 6'4 from CCRI another good swingman, as well as Jamal Jackson from Cambridge who was in prep for a year who is roughly 6'5. And I am sure there are more to come.
If Salem just brings back their team from last year, then they should move back into their usual status of "above average team that absolutely no one wants to play, ever."
so the fact that bridgewater is gettin almost their whole team back with a preseason honerable mention all-american and their the defending mascac champions means nothing i guess.....they beat salem twice last year and they can do it again.
I didn't say anything about Bridgewater. I just said Salem should be better than they were last year. Bridgewater can be good too. It's ok to have two good teams in one conference. I understand that's a new concept for the MASCAC, but they may want to try it out this year.
Bridgewater actually has lost one key player and that is 6'9 starting center Tyler Lang. Dont know what happened to him, but he is not on the roster.
Congrats to Eric Downie for All American Honorable Mention
first of all tyler never once started center, he played the 3 and the 4 the majority of the time, the dominant center in the league is derek thompson preseason honerable mention all-american....where's his congrats??? also filling the roll of lang is roland millien who plays similar to d-thomp and will be a tough matchup with both of them on the floor as he is 100% for the first time in two years....also there is chris dijak a 6'5 transfer from umass amherst who is an absolute beast, currently starting d-tackle for the football team (the only sport he played at amherst)....the bears may not be as tall as salem, but i think will be bigger and tougher inside, the true test will come earlier then that anyways when the play wpi in a rematch of last year's ncaa tourney.
Lang wasnt very good for his size, he always floated out to the 3pt line. i wonder we he is now. bridgewater st was his 3rd school in 3 years.
Now lets not jump to conclusions. Im not saying BSC is going to be bad, however losing such a big presence can possibly be costly on the defensive end, as Lang was there to cover other big guys over 6'6. On the offensive end it prob. is not as big of a loss.
The other reason why I am not all over BSC is because of the track record. And yes they made the NCAA'S last year so definitly congrats to them for that. But, if you look at the last 5 years they have not had a season with less than 10 losses, which isn't exaclty impressive. And Salem is well, Salem. And it seems that Westfield is now in the mix as well.
And yes Congrats to D. Thompson
d-thomp covered the other teams center because he can jump out of the building even at 6'3, when they went 2-3 zone lang was on the wing so even though he was a double-double guy and a solid player he was never the inside presence u'r making him out to be, and lang still goes to bridgewater he's just not playing.
Man, Salem State just keeps dissapointing. A loss to RWU is not good for them. Although they have loads of talent, and Downie is good, they seem to never have any chemistry with this current team.
forget about salem that are a bunch of cocky kids who basically don't have the gpa's to play in a higher division...the true experience will be found tonight with bsc vs. wpi......either team would deserve a ranking if they win....salem until they play as a team (assuming mccants doesn't knock downie out again this year....true story) we'll see what happens
That's true. It's tough to tell exactly how good WPI and BSC are, but we'll know at least relatively, after this next game.
How about Westfield State starting out a surprising 3-0, and beating elms which made the tourny. last year.
Salem State just beat the mighty WPI by 12.......i think their ready to be taken serious lead by McCombs And Downie
Bridgewater (7-3) slaps Westfield by 15, big game for Soph. Roland Millien with 14 and 16. Salem (8-2) wins easily at Lasell. Looks like a possible two horse race already...
i wouldnt count westfield out already, they have salem this thursday lets see what happens there first. Westfield as a very good starting 4, there bench really hurts them
yeah definitely a big game on thursday. bridgewater lost to endicott, who is down this year. if salem plays together, they should run the table, theres some talent on that squad.
Bridgewater tops MCLA 82 -73. Monster games from Adam Rose and Derek Thompson who combined for 49 points and 20 rebounds. Damn. BSC improves to 3-0 in the MASCAC and 9-4 overall.
Fitchburg (3-10) goes down 74 - 63 at Wheaton (8-6) despite 20 and 7 from Brian Torres.
Um. I'm not sure beating MCLA by 9 is something to brag about. I'm just saying.
haha definitely not; those were the only mascac teams playin last night is all.
mcla might be better than you think....

mcla might be better than you think....
I doubt it.
Actually MCLA is better this year.
They picked up Dave Bisesi who was in the regular rotation for Potsdam when they went to the elite 8. He's averaging around 20, with a high of 47 in a quintuple OT game vs. SUNY Maritime.
They also picked up a juco shooting guard at Mid-semester, Jared Martin who is avaraging around 12 since joining the team in mid-semester.
They have three legitimate scorers, so anyone taking them lightly (e.g. Framingham last week) may be surprised.
Westfield at Salem tonight at 8 big game for the MASCAC.
SSC 75 WSC 59
Looks like Salem is the Cream of the Crop in the Mascac this year.
first of all mcla is not better then ya think....bsc was missing star shooter and mascac leading scorer (tied with downie) tommy cuddihy....not only that but the 9 point win did not show what really happened in the game because bsc led by high double figures until mcla started jackin up 3's all day and gettin a few to make it look close
second of all i think u gotta wait til after next thursday to say salem's on top because westfield is not good this year....so until salem beats bsc or the other way around there's nothing to be said....and if cuddihy's not back healthy for that game then u really can not say anything yet
Quick recap of last nights games
Salem wins at Emmanuel 68 - 62. The Vikings (11-2) have won four straight and ten of their last eleven. 4 players in double figures for SSC : Downie (17) McCombs (13, 17 rebs.) Victor (12) and Finn (11).
Westfield (10-6) loses to Fisher (5-13) 81-65. Fisher guard Michael Newcombe had an insane stat line: 38 points, 14 boards, 6 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks on 50 % shooting. Ryan Mauer (16) and Gavin Illangakoon (10) paced the Owls.
Worcester State loses at home to Newbury in OT 77-70. WSC (6-9) got good efforts from Ryan Frassica with 28 and Will Spont with 18. Arch Mitchell had 21 and Kevin Cleveland 17 to lead Newbury (7-6) to victory.
Bridgewater goes on the road and wins at UMASS - Boston 74-71. Tom Cuddihy had 23 points to lead BSC. K.C. Grandfield ran the show well with 10 dimes to only 2 turnovers, and forward Derek Thompson had a solid game as well with 17 and 6 boards ( and a nice flush ). UMB got 23 from Amigo Paniagua and 17 from Tony Barros. Bridgewater improves to 10-4 while UMB falls to 5-10.
i got a question for ya....salem scores 115 against framingham but gives up 96 in the process...are they not playing defense or something???
new website for the mascac is really nice
In a game like that where Salem is clearly more talented, the SSC kids go for big blocks and quick steals, then pretty much just wait until they're on offense to exert any effort. Salem is big, long, and very athletic; so they are certainly capable of playing D.
3 Games tonight...
Framingham (7-10; 1-4) goes into Fitchburg (3-12; 1-3) and wins 83-76. Freshman Bill Carey led the Rams with 24, and sophomore Josue Almodovar had 19 and 8 boards. Brian Torres had 29 in a losing effort.
Salem over MCLA 81-62. Eric Downie has 30 12 rebs and 4 blocks, and Brandon McCombs has 20 and 9 for the Vikings. McCombs was also named ECAC player of the week. Salem improves to 13-2, and 4-0 in the MASCAC.
Bridgewater survives Worcester 62-53 in a game they trailed at the half. Cuddihy (17) and Thompson (12) paced BSC. K.C. Grandfield had an effective line as well, with 7 dimes to only 2 turnovers. Worcester falls to 7-10, 2-3 while Bridgewater is tied with Salem at 4-0 in the league (11-4 overall).
three league matchups went down tonight
The biggest one a.k.a only one that matters was Bridgewater at Salem. SSC wins comfortably 87-72. Downie (23,11) and McCombs (14,11) led six Vikings (14-2;5-0) who were in double figures. Derek Thompson led BSC (11-5;4-1) with 20.
Curtis Gadles hit a 3 with 0.9 left on the clock as Westfield (12-6,3-2) survived Framingham (7-11,1-5) 82-79. This seems like it was a wild one, what with a combined 50 fouls and ebb and flow of the game (FSC led by 10 on 4 separate occasions). Gadles had 29 points and 13 boards for the WSC Owls, while sophomore Josue Almodovar dropped 31 on 14 of 18 shooting for the Rams.
Fitchburg (2-4) beats MCLA (1-5) on the road.
I only have seen schools in the greater Boston area play this year, but Salem is easily the most physically daunting team I have seen. They're huge, athletic 1 thru 5, Downie is a freak, and McCombs is playin out of his mind.
Like I said before. Salem is the cream of the crop in the Mascac.
if you were at the game you'd know the score wasn't as comfortable as it looked....the lead got blown up when bsc started jackin 3's at the end....salem was the better team that night, but they can definitely be beaten
Yeah I made the trip up to Salem, and although the score was tight (6 at the half I think), SSC controlled the entire way and were clearly a better side. Like you said, every team is beatable, and the Vikings have some obvious flaws: they can be lacksidasical in their half court, and effort isnt always 100 percent there. Nobody in the MASCAC is touching them though.
Bridgewater over Westfield in a thriller yesterday, 75-74 in OT. WSC junior 2 guard Andrew Deffer buried a three with 0.6 seconds left to send the game into overtime. During the extra frame, BSC trailed by 2 with under 20 seconds when Tom Cuddihy drove for a layup and was fouled. He converted the free throw to seal the road W. Bridgewater improves to 6-1 in conference play, while Westfield drops to 4-3.
Framingham 110 MCLA 89
Fitchburg 67 Worcester 52
Framingham (3-5) freshman guard Bill Carey hit a 3 with 5 seconds remaining to give the Rams an impressive 97-95 win over Bridgewater State (6-2).
Worcester (3-5) defeats Westfield (4-4) by a spread of 9, 76 - 67.
Salem (8-0) runs past Fitchburg 82 - 63.
Framingham (9-12 ,3-6) loses at home to Worcester (9-13,4-5) 89-84. FSC got a ton of shots up, but couldnt hit anything apparently, going 30-98 from the floor, and 10-44 from 3. Costa and Wigman led the Rams with 19 and 16. Ryan Frassica had 22 on 6-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Also, senior forward Wigman (Pembroke, MA) scored his 1,000th point last week.
Salem (18-2, 8-0) wins at Westfield (13-9, 4-5) 76-67. Eric Downie had 27 and 11 for the Vikings, who have won 11 straight. 5 players were in double figures for WSC, who was outrebounded by a margin of 17.
Bridgewater (15-6,7-2) beats MCLA by a score of 78-73. Junior Tom Cuddihy scored his 1,000th point with 15 seconds remaining. He finished with 22 and was helped by Derek Thompson (17 and 7) and the very efficient K.C. Grandfield (11,7,3).
it's white out night at the bridge tomorrow night and time to prove that they can beat salem once again
3 league matchups tonight
The only game of real significance went down in Bridgewater as Salem clinched the MASCAC title with an 81-72 victory. 5 in double figures for SSC led by Downie (20,9) and Holmes (17,10). Cuddihy went for 21 and Roland Millien had a nice game off the bench with 17 and 10. Salem is now 21-2 and BSC 16-7.
Framingham drops a 93-75 decision at home to Westfield. Matt Badjo with 25, and it seems this was over at the half 51-29. Almodovar with 20 and Wigman with 18 for FSC. Westfield is talented; they are definitely capable of winning the tourney despite their 5-6 league record.
Fitchburg hangs on for a 79-77 win over MCLA, and will likely sneak into the MASCAC tourney next week.
haha down year for the MASCAC huh?
Hey Pimpingold,
dont predict things that wont happen. Salem looks pretty legit right about now. And how would Fitchburg sneak into the tourny? Only 4 teams make it i believe
Fitchburg and Worcester are tied at 5-6 in the league. Fitchburg is at Bridgewater, and Worcester is at Salem for the final game of the season. FSC beat WSC both times head to head. So Worcester is in if they beat salem and BSC wins, otherwise Fitchburg is in.
no all-around if you haven't realized it by now 6 times make the tournament as of this year...but good up to date post....by the way bridgewater is still defending their mascac title so we'll see what happens in salem
well i was wrong about that. But dont kill the messenger on BSC.
and Salem takes it ;D...just like we all knew they would.
Salem took the last two games of the tourney despite trailing at half of both of them. The Medford representative Eric Downie with 30 and 10 in the championship. SSC ends up at 24-2 for the year. Anyone know if Downie will get any All - America love at 21+,8+ ?
hmm, yes they were trailing at the half at both games, but thats not what decides the game, you should know that. and if you were at the games, you'd know that MOST of the points westfield got were foul shots. the refs were not being fair at all, and most people would agree with me.
goddamn people can get touchy. I made the trip up to SSC for both of those games, and they were trailing at half of both of them. thats a fact not an opinion. and how would it matter that a team's points came from the line?
no kidding its a fact, but like i said before the score at the half does NOT decide the game and it matters when points only come from the line, when the calls are unfair, which there were quite a few unfair calls made.
Ballacutie- I think the mention of Salem being down at the half never once was meant to be an indication that Salem should lose the game. Just an observation that Salem is not dominating teams and was in potential danger of being beaten.
If you want to play the unfair reffing card, you won't get much support. In reality, bad reffing usually goes both ways.
What constitutes an unfair call? Where you keeping track of your "unfair calls" for each team?
Who do you think Salem plays next; Keene or Rivier??
Man Keene State is my squad mostly cause of the dude tyler kathan. he fills it up and duke is only a sophomore. Now I only saw Rivier once this year (in a loss to at Suffolk), but I am aware of the all Greater Boston backcourt of Giardano and McMahon.
I cant see Keene State losing this game.
KSC 84 RIV 71
That response is what I wanted to see. I haven't seen or heard anything about Rivier all year so I really have no idea what to think about them besides a look at schedule/results/box scores. I'm primarily an LEC guy and hope to see Keene and RIC represent well this year.
Not to get too far ahead of myself, but have you seen Keene play much? How do you think they match up with Salem? You can't deny the strength and quickness of the bigs inside for Keene. There might be a greater defensive presence inside than Downie is used to.
Ive seen Keene 3 times this year, and I really like them. I saw them beat Endicott and UM Boston, and lose to Tufts in one of the best games of the year. I really like Nate Anderson as a complement to Kathan inside. All through the front line they are quick and pretty athletic, similar to Salem. In reference to Downie, he plays a little more on the perimeter, so I'm not sure whether the Keene bigs will go out and check him, or if KSC will choose to go with a 2 or 3 on him. Dylan Holmes get no love, but he has had a great year in the middle for Salem. I think this game would come down to guard play, and who takes better care of the ball. I really like #41 for Keene who was efficient in each of the games I saw. They had some difficulty against UM-B committing a lot of turnovers. Salems back court of Marquis Victor and Alex Finn are up and down, and I think they will have to be on point for Salem to win against Keene.
Keene has a very quick tall defender with great length in Travon Little. He is 6'7" and seems to me to be the most likely pick to guard Downie on the perimeter. He should be effective as long as he stays out of foul trouble.
Keene is a very deep team with a bunch of offensive weapons that could potentially go off in they are left unchecked.
You are probably right with your statement about the guard play. Keene can get a little out of control on the break and make some unforced turnovers.
I really don't know who is the "favorite" in this one. It seems like a pretty even match.
Hey guys, we're collecting previews for each team in the tourney on one of the multiregional boards. If I get them by Friday I may even be able to stick them in one document for people to peruse. A fun little tourney resource of sorts. Would someone here be willing to do one for Salem State? Thanks!
http://www.d3sports.com/post/index.php?topic=5147.0
what a thriller in salem... KSC 76 SSC 75. Salem guard Nick Tokarski with a great look to win it- a layup- but couldnt convert. Dylan Holmes tipped it in, and the Salem fans rushed the court, but it was determined that the tip-in did not beat the buzzer. Great game, lots of ups and downs, both teams played with tremendous heart. Lot of touch fouls called, but that hindered both teams. Sontag and Drouin were huge for Keene, and their star Kathan didnt get a lot of touches late. Marquis Victor was immense for the Vikings, as he had to pick up for a slow start for Eric Downie (1 for his first 9). Downie did have a very strong 2nd half in his college finale.
I see that the Salem State site says that Salem out rebounded Keene by 12, but i think those are inflated numbers. It really seemed that Keene had a lot of 2nd chance buckets.
One final note: Despite the SSC fans booing the refs, I think it was a very well officiated game. It was tight, but they were consistent, and thats all you can ask for. There was a missed goaltending call, but thats a great nights work by the three officials.
It's hard to inflate rebound numbers in stat crew. You'd have to then create an artificial turnover to get the ball out of Salem's hands in order to allow Keene to take a shot in the stats.
couldve been a case of Keene not getting credit for tipins or putbacks... but I see what youre saying. Probably wasnt as aware as I thought I was.
Just showin some love to Eric Downie for receiving Northeast Region Player of the Year.
Saw that Chris Harvey got the job at Salem State. Probably a great fit for Salem with his experience at Lasell as far as recruitment. Lasell and Salem seem to have similar type players. He went to 3 straight NCAA's without an automatic bid. Also, his teams at Lasell always played very hard nosed defense which can be linked to the coach. With this change maintain Salem superiority or do the other programs have a shot?
Having watch BSC this weekend against Tufts and then Brandeis, I would say they have a legit shot at winning the conference and taking its Auto bid to NCAA's
Bridgewater will get another early season test this Tuesday night when they host Rhode Island College.
Rhode Island College over Bridgewater St by 2 tonight. BSU had the last possession but missed a 3. Cuddihy kept BSU in the game. The kid who got hurt at Brandeis didn't play but is going to be OK, I'm told.
Boy, the MASCAC should be a war this year with 3 talented teams competing for the league title. Framingham State travelled to Williams tonight and gave the Ephs all they could handle in a 60-56 loss. Same for Salem State vs. WPI this weekend and Bridgewater State vs. Rhode Island College last week. In each case the MASCAC team came out on the losing end, but all 3 games came down to the wire and could have gone either way. The MASCAC has to start winning a few of these games to make an argument for an at large berth in the tournament in addition to the league winner, but it certainly looks like a very competitive and wide open league race right now among these 3 teams.

what about Fitchburg they beat umass boston and ric
The win against RIC is notable... Umass Boston, not so much
new poster on the board, but the biggest suprise is Framingham state this year...we all new BSC would be good as well as Salem, but Framingham gave Williams all they could handle as well as Brandeis... they had a wide open look at a 3 to tie the game with 4 seconds left but that kid Carey missed it... remember framingahm beat BSC last year... i think this conference has some real good teams this year but i think the top three are Bridgewater, Salem, Framingham in that order
What about Fitchburg? I don't think Salem is getting the automatic at-large berth to the tournament this year and the funny thing is, thing might be the year they have the schedule to earn it legitimately.
fitchburg is not bad... they beat RIC who is suppose to be good... we will see once league action begins after winter break
Hi there
Just letting you know that we'll be broadcasting Salem State's games from the Montclair Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Go to front page or http://www.d3hoops.com/audio (http://www.d3hoops.com/audio) for the link
Will FSC win the regular season, there up 1 game with 3 to play. If they happen to lose a game and salem wins out , salem owns the tie breaker by beating FSC twice.
Either way their coach has done a great job!
Fram beat FSC last night by 2, that was a big loss for FSC. now FSC and Salem are tied for first with two games to play
Salem take the regular seaosn title again, but how about mcla beating Westfield state today. thats a bad one
I checked out that FSC/BSC game last night. A kid from Framingham named Josie Amodovar put on quite a skeptical at the beginning of the game. After 3 mins into the game he flipped out by slamming the ball on the floor 2x and screaming at 2 teammates of his own on the bench. The teammates were encouraging him to hustle back on defense but he simply showed no effort. What a lack of hustle. The kid missed a shot and just decided not to spirnt back on defense on 3 consecutive posessions. FSC called a time-out and the Amodovar kid left the gymnasium and took off his jersey. He then returned back to the bench after 5 minutes went by. That was a killer to the rest of the team and FSC lost focus. FSC was the better team but Amodovar clearly has no respect for his teammates. Very selfish! Everytime Bridgewater went on a run was because he was out on the floor. Rolland Millien the powerforward for Bridgewater had a field day on him!
I combined that post into this board, just FYI.
Worcester state starts the season 0-2 losing to becker and wpi, but they did get two big games from transfer maurice horton. he should be player of the year in the conference
Westfield looking like a veteran club ready to make a MASCAC 'chip run.
this might be one of the best conferences in NE this year. Salem state just beat wpi, gordon and mit in 3 straight games, and beat bowdoin and psc already
Bridgewater just beat Wheaton and u mass Dartmouth
wsc is a tough team that can beat anyone, and Framingham State and fitchburg ST are also very good teams
So the North East Region Posters' Poll is back, if you are interested in participating, which clearly you are, please submit your polls to either my email or my message box here by 9pm mondays (so for this week tonight, sorry for the short notice).
Thanks
Congratulations to Bridgewater State in winning last night over St. Joseph's (Maine), 95-79.

Safe travels to all heading to Lancaster this weekend! Should be a great set of games.
I know a lot of people don't believe in the MASCAC, but I just want to give this league some credit. Last Year this league sent four teams to post Season. Bridgewater and Salem State both reached the sweet 16 in D3 tourney and the league put up some impressive wins over top teams in New England. I think it was one of the great years for the league. Now teams like salem and Bridgewater are top top 25 in pre-season polls, I expect that this league will again make noise this year. Good Luck to the league and it should be a wild and fun year.
Bridgewater and Salem both played well and the MASCAC seems to be improving over recent years, however, the ECAC does not count as "post-season" basketball.
Salem State has a lot of new players, but they are really good. They should be at the top of the mascac again.

Man the Salem State faithful must be angry. 2nd year for this coach who will record one of the worst seasons in SSC history...a year after they go deep into the NCAA tournament!!!
Former MCLA player (now Longwood coach) Mike Gillian, http://www.longwoodlancers.com/staff.aspx?staff=13&path=mbasket, was featured in this week's ESPN Magazine (couldn't find a link however) for a defensive drill he runs in which players keep bricks on their shoulders. See page 65 of the magazine ...
Anyone know what happened to Anthony Griffin from Westfield State who didn't come back for 2nd semester?
Congrats to Framingham Hoops squad. They were up 21 and Salem State played as hard as they have all year. They turned a 21 point deficit to a 68 68 tie. Framingham then kept it together over last two minutes and went on a 10-2 run to close out game. Way to keep their collective minds together. Kudos to Salem State. They did a great job turning their season around after a bad start in non-conference play. Framingham will now go up against Bridgewater State at 2PM on Saturday. Last two games were thrillers that came down to final moments and I expect nothing less from this one.
Will the conference change to MASUAC with the recent legislative changes?

A cheap plug if you will -
The Worcester Area College Basketball (coaches) Association revived its awards program last year and, for the second consecutive year, is complimented with a Twitter account - @WACBAHoops https://twitter.com/wacbahoops (https://twitter.com/wacbahoops)
The feed features daily news, scores, recaps and more for all nine NCAA men's and women's basketball programs in Worcester County: Anna Maria, Assumption (DII), Becker, Clark, Fitchburg State, Holy Cross (DI), Nichols, WPI and Worcester State.
Matt Noonan (@NoontimeSports), as heard on Hoopsville, selects the weekly men's and women's players of the week and an honor roll for each gender. Along with the weekly release there will be standings and statistical leaders for points, rebounds and assists. Both will are slated to be released on Monday afternoons.
The big game is over, so now it's time to focus only on basketball. Division III basketball to be exact.
Join Dave and a number of guests on this special Monday edition of Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com). There is plenty to talk about including another crazy weekend of results that will have Top 25 voters scratching their heads and maybe pulling hair off their head as well. Plus, the first regional rankings come out later this week. While predictions are hard, there at least will be some reminding of how this all works.
And maybe even a preview of what this evening's Top 25s look like.
Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch the show starting at 2:00 p.m. ET here: http://bit.ly/2FOQ7hX

Dear D3 Faithful ;D,
I have read many of your posts throughout the years and even met some of you in person, but for those who I haven't met, let me introduce myself: my name is Michael Rejniak and I have spent over 14 years coaching Division 3 basketball and love what our division has done and continues to do for the sport of basketball. One of the greatest things about Division 3 basketball is the brotherhood that we all have with one another (coaches and players alike). My wish is to showcase the talents of D3 on a national stage in
The Basketball Tournament (TBT). You may have heard me speak about this on the Hoopsville Marathon with Dave McHugh of D3hoops.com (at the 6:11 mark). The TBT is a national tournament that is televised in July/August on ESPN after the NBA season is over. My goal is to put forth an all-star D3 team (current players are ineligible) and have them compete in this tournament to take on Former D1 / semi-pro's to prove that D3 deserves the same respect as other NCAA divisions. The team is mostly complete with former student-athletes from all over the country competing. Once the roster is complete we will be sure to release it through d3hoops. Former Babson College National Champion Matthew Droney '17 will also be assisting me on this journey.
How YOU can help our former elite D3 basketball players
While the end prize of this tournament is a monetary prize, being a D3-lifer, the goal is not the money (we all know that's not why we get into coaching), the goal is to bring an end to the stigma of Division 3 basketball, an awareness of how talented our student-athletes are and that we can compete (and win) against the best. We do need to raise funds for an entry fee, travel, meal and housing expenses for the athletes. In order to do this, we are conducting a crowd-funding campaign through GoFundMe to help make this a reality. These athletes need your support! Just think -- if every Division 3 school donated just $10, we will have raised over $4,000!!!! The link to the GoFundMe Page is below and please SPREAD THE WORD and email me with any questions/concerns at WeAreD3TBT@gmail.com. Thank you in advance for your support and Dave and I look forward to this "D3 Dream Team" taking the court this summer.-Mike Rejniak

One of the 2 Whit NWC schools, I think Whitworth?? did it last year or 2 years ago, but it started at 12:01 local time or 3:01 here in the East 3 hours later. I'm pretty sure a midwestern women's team did it 2 or 3 years ago, but Worcester & Clark seem to be the only one's doing it this year.

He was named MASCAC player of the week the day before.

What a thug. Hope he never sees the court again and is suspended from school.
WTF
The Spun says, "Somehow the refs don't see it." The video obviously contradicts that. The ref blows the whistle, and signals a flagrant foul.

As an (ex) Criminal Justice Major, he should understand that he just committed Assault and Battery – and should be praying that nobody's in the process of filing charges.

The campus police are investigating options.
I'm just grateful he doesn't pack the punch of Kermit Washington, who nearly ended the life of Rudy Tomjanovich back in 1977.
This board has (alas) now seen as much activity in the past day as it did in the previous decade ...

John Feinstein wrote a great book on that incident called The Punch where he details how it changed both people's lives. It was fascinating and sad how it changed both people's lives. Washington did not go to jail. He was not barred from the Lakers' facilities. He continued to play in the NBA. In fact he played during that same season -- his suspension was 26 games.
I don't know whether Platt's actions constitute assault. That's a legal question I can't answer.
I've been thinking about some of the most violent acts I've seen in sports -- pitchers intentionally hitting batters in the head with fastballs (or trying to do so), football players taking blind side shots at guys behind a play in the guise of "blocking" someone who has no chance to make a play on the ball, athletes who have straight up punched (or kicked or stomped on) an opponent. Other than the hockey player who took a stick to an opponent's head in an NHL game, I can't think of many who've been charged with assault.
It's not a popular opinion today and perhaps not one I can articulate well. But I don't know if Platt's actions -- which were terrible and cruel and way outside the lines of competition -- were worse than any of those other events. And I feel sad that he may be barred from finishing his education. This was a terrible foul and he deserved whatever punishment he gets in the basketball world, including getting kicked off the team if that's what the school decides.
But kicking him out of school, barring him from public property (which Fitchburg State is) and telling him that he doesn't deserve to pursue a future through college anymore? How does that help?
He can pursue a future through college, just possibly not Fitchburg. It's a public property, but I'm sure they all sign some kind of waiver code of conduct. It's a knee jerk reaction, but not necessarily an overreaction. It's entirely possible that they let him return to classes, but not the team.
Actions have consequences. The school has its code of conduct or something similar. Based on their statement on the matter, he violated that. To protect their student body, removing him from campus for a time (potentially permanently) seems to me to be just.

I understand the point you are trying to make.
The problem for me is that I think that given what we know about traumatic brain injuries, the hit was not only terrible and cruel, but likely dangerous.
I am not sure why we tolerate a different level of violence in professional sports than we do elsewhere (mostly a rhetorical question), but I think sports will continue to evolve and we will eventually have to ask why we let players like Gronkowski continue to play after making hits like this against Tre'Davious White.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgjAN_wgmiI
I'm guessing many, if not all, of Gordon Mann's examples of violence in sports are of the professional variety.
Gordon, he's obviously free to continue his education at another institution. However, think about the amount of wrong publicity Fitchburg just received involuntarily. I've seen the incident on ESPN, CNN, the Today Show, and on Sports Illustrated... and I wasn't even looking. Google "College Basketball Cheap Shots", and have a look at what Fitchburg will have associated with their name for years to come. They had to act swiftly. An over-reaction? Perhaps. But anything less than what they did could potentially have compounded the negative publicity.
My thoughts:
