Not a single team in the top 240 teams in all of D-3 men's basketball.
The College of Saint Elizabeth was in the NEAC last season and was 378th in the final Massey Ratings.
I look at as it's the competition that counts.... remember, one of these CSAC teams will make the tourney... a number of teams rated better than 100 won't... that competition is one of the reasons I've enjoyed the SLIAC so much... no NCAA tourney wins yet, but the games leading to a conference tourney winner have often been terrific....
Gotta agree with hopefan. The CSAC may be brutal in terms of talent level and aesthetics, but there's an awful lot to be said for a league that is internally competitive from top to bottom.

I don't know anything about their history, but I think we are all in agreement that it is not important what a teams rating is out of conference for those involved there. For those programs it is just win their league and live 'the Hoosiers dream'.

Let's remember. D3 is about peer institutions competing on their own level. In fact, those institutions in the CSAC and the SLIAC may be performing closer to the ideals that brought forth Division III nearly 50 years ago. In a lot of ways, Pool C is about do-overs, greed, envy, and covetousness.
While I can't argue with that, Ralph, I will gladly be a greedy, envious, covetous do-over adherent if NPU doesn't win this week's CCIW men's soccer tourney and thereby requires a Pool C berth. I can go back to making my peace with the tenth commandment next week. ;)

I read these boards on a weekly basis. I have always appreciated the love and the passion that the posters on here have displayed for all schools, big and small, and have marveled at how, (mostly) people that support D3 basketball do so in a manner befitting of the ideals of the sport. I also know that coaches don't often post outside of needing games, and, well, I am going to break that trend tonight. While looking through the lists of preseason conference rankings I noticed a small shot at the conference I coach in, the CSAC. I expected to look at the person who took this cheap shot and see a handful of names that I would recognize that fall into the "troll" category around these parts. Instead, I see Pat Coleman's handle, and, frankly, my jaw dropped.
"Let's discuss (sports) in a positive way, sometimes kidding each other with no disrespect." I guess I feel disrespected.
I have admired Pat for that quote for the decade plus that I have visited your website, and taking some time to look through a couple of pages of your recent pots, he has lived up to this ideal. Why then take a shot at the CSAC? Honestly, it's inexcusable. I am going into my 8th year at Rosemont, and while their might not be any Aaron Walton-Moss' in the conference, guy like Malachi Hall, Chris LaBelle and Rahaan Bean are fine examples of what makes D3 hoops great. As coaches, we are all looking to teach the same lessons as guys in the ODAC, UAA or NESCAC, and create in the words of my old boss "a laboratory for life". You qualified your statements a few posts later, presumably to lessen the blow. Please let my statement here be crystal clear- I lost some respect for you tonight, Pat. The student-athletes of the CSAC deserve better from you.

Well said. I now have a rooting interest in the CSAC.
Coach Hughes's post got me to do a little research and it seems like the Rosemont 100, at Cairn 97 CSAC championship game last year was one of the best games of the season with so much at stake. 13 ties, 19 lead changes, a road W for the chip.
Props to Bob for fouling up 3 with six seconds left and not letting Cairn shoot a three!!

Wow, I'm surprised that NEWMAC ranked Emerson above Babson (all but one guy back, add a high-profile D1 transfer) and Springfield (which has maybe the best player in the country and probably the two best players in the conference, and suffered some tough injury luck last year after making the Final Four the preceding season). Even more surprised Emerson got four first place votes! Yes, Emerson had a great run in last year's NEWMAC playoffs, but they were mediocre the entire season leading up to that, flamed out badly in round one of the NCAAs, and graduated a big-time player in Geoffrey Gray (led Emerson in points, assists, rebounds, steals) from a team that was very top-heavy in its talent.

Yeah, but it's double votes. They're letting maybe SIDs or ADs vote in this one. There's 26 votes for 13 schools.
That doesn't mean that they're both going to be company men when it comes to voting in a preseason poll. My experiences with coaches, ADs, and SIDs is that they tend to approach these kinds of matters with fairly different mindsets.

Maybe my logic is wrong, but I would think oftentimes the coach of a consensus #1 would
prefer to pick another school so that his team doesn't get too cocky before they've even played a game (not speaking of the CCC here).
I thought some conferences prevent you from voting for your own team.

It's essentially a defacto Pool B at this point. So long as CNU remains nationally competitive and doesn't lose in the conference tournament, it doesn't hurt anything.

I've not heard of that before. Lots that don't allow you to vote yourself #1.
The way the MIAA coaches poll works is each coach submits a ranking of 1-7, omitting themselves. Then it works like the top 25 poll where first place vote gets 7 points, second is six points,..., one point for seventh place.

So Trine's 49 points last year made them a "unanimous" number one, despite Calvin getting one first place vote because Brooks Miller would have been submitting a ballot with everyone but Trine listed.
Interestingly enough the NECC had the exact vote tabulations in the 2021-2022 season, thought the order of teams were different. Maybe it's not so much of an oddity if you are only ranking 4 teams, can't vote for yourself, and there's a clear 4th place team. But yeah, the numbers???

Why do they even bother having a poll? This conference frustrates me so much. I "get" having this conference so you can be a part of it and have an AQ, blah, blah, blah...it's just a big loophole. Last year, Warren Wilson didn't even play any conference games. Pratt played one.
I agree that it's a gimmick. Someone from D3 hoops last year said a lack of conference games is actually more of a disadvantage...in what world? It allows you to craft a schedule almost completely to your liking since you can tailor it for an NCAA bid by avoiding in conference SOS drags.

Not really. It's a disadvantage, in large part because of timing. As a
de facto independent, a C2C team is forced to play other D3 teams on those other D3 teams' terms with regard to schedule availability. Conference games eat up January and February in their entirety. If you're lucky, a nearby conference will have an odd number of teams and thus be forced to play an odd-team-out schedule in which game days will leave one conference member with an open date for which that C2C team could then schedule them (if the conference-based team is willing to do so, that is). If the C2C team is not that lucky, they're either going to have to travel very far indeed to find such an odd-team-out conference-bound D3 opponent, or else they're going to have to pick up a non-D3 opponent. And if a C2C team's neighboring D3 leagues are large, then that means that their conference schedules require pre-Christmas games as well, which cramps a C2C team's scheduling opportunities even more.
And, yeah, let's talk about "crafting a schedule almost completely to your liking" for an island-within-islands school such as UC-Santa Cruz!
Here's how C2C regular-season schedules broke down by month in 2022-23:

This is not optimal scheduling. This is necessity scheduling. Many conference-bound teams play 13 or 14 games in January and February, nicely evening out their schedules before and after what is typically a break around Christmastime. C2C teams are only able to get in about 11 or 12 games in January and February, and just getting in that many requires the comparatively localized triumvirate of Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, and Salisbury to play home-and-homes against each other in those two months. The bigger problem is that you see all sorts of non-D3 games in those January and February schedules by necessity, just to pad out the already-thin slates for those two months. Salisbury played Washington Adventist and Apprentice School (USCAA opponents) last January, and Pratt played Adventist School in February. Warren Wilson played no fewer than 12 non-D3 opponents last season, and the Banana Slugs played six.
The flip side of the problem is that the C2C teams have to overstuff November and December compared to everybody else; not only does that pose its own set of scheduling problems (the season starts well into November, you have to work your schedule around Christmas in December, and then there's the issue of semester finals at your school), it means that a disproportionate amount of your schedule comes at a time when your team is still consolidating, jelling, and developing. Obviously, this was not an impediment to CNU or MWU last season, but it didn't help matters, either.
Lots of teams play midweek games during conference play. Most of the C2C schools are in regions where there isn't a huge travel requirement to get games in January and February. I do not agree that it's a disadvantage. Santa Cruz is in no man's land, they are going to be screwed regardless of conference affiliation.

Scheduling is a HUGE nightmare for CNU. You hit many of the issues. Once conference play starts, other teams in the middle of conference play do not necessarily want to play non conference games. You can find an odd ball once in a while. Also, you tend to travel more. I think the first year of the C2C the women's team at CNU had 4 home games after Jan 1. I will look that up.
Correction - The women played a home game Jan 29th and a home game Feb 19th in the first full season of the C2C. That's hardly an advantage. That same season the men had 2 home games in January and 2 in February. I don't think that's a formula to "craft a schedule almost completely to your liking"
Also - in order to try to get 25 games in, CNU relies on home tournaments during holidays. That costs money keeping more of the campus open and also paying guarantees to have teams come to the games.
It is far from ideal. The coaches hate it. They would much rather have a normal conference schedule. To even think that they can schedule whatever and whenever they want is so far from reality it is absurd.
