Lemme kick the dead horse again...last year's St Thomas game was exciting as they come for this fan. A drive to tie on an away field of a higher ranked opponent with 17 seconds left, but lose on a fumble near the end zone in OT.

Not quite The Mishap In the Mud,  but exciting.

Wish I had seen live the 1984 NAIA Title Game at McMinnville High School. With 18 minutes left, defending champ Northwestern(IA) held a 22-0 lead, before Linfield exploded with 33 to take the victory. I believe this comeback might be the largest in 1AA, D2, D3, and NAIA championship game history.

I have a followup on that game.  I was operating the scoreboard and our  long-time timer was running the game clock (no play clock operator back in those days).  His niece was being married about that time and our timer's wife INSISTED that he go to the wedding.

As he left, with the intention to return as soon as possible, I took over the game clock operation.  And lo and behold, Linfield began to score!  As we began to close, I commented to those in the press box "If Ez (our timer) gets back, I'm not giving up this clock control!"  As luck (bad for Ez) would have it, on the way back to the game a young driver ran a stop sign and broad sided Ez's car.  He didn't make it back for the rest of the game, and the Cats won 33-22 if my old memory - today is my 88th birthday - is correct

General football / Re: Helmets and concussions ...

I have thought for some time that the research in automobile crash survivability should be applied to helmet construction.  Cars are constructed with parts that have a progressive crush-ability.  The old leather helmets had some of the same flexibility.  I think the rigid modern helmets should have a 1/4" or 3/8" softer outer layer to reduce the sudden impact effects.  The softening effect of the two helmets, plus the additional interior padding should have a significant reduction in the trauma sustained by soft brain tissue as it tries to bounce about in the rigid skull container.  I hope some research will be done on this matter.  Any takers?

All of you people griping about the time listing should be aware that both the NCAA times and D3.com listings are EASTERN time zones, so a 3:00 PM listing would be 12:00 noon in the Pacific (McMinnville, etc.) time zone.  Of course, that does not justify sending the #5 team to play the #7 team!  (End of rant.)

Pat, I would like some information to validate the use of the Strength of Schedule as a method of evaluation.  All teams are stuck with the value of the teams they play, ESPECIALLY in their conferences/leagues.  They can TRY to schedule out of league, as Linfield and other NWC teams do, but find a paucity of willing takers - travel cost, distance, and reluctance to risk defeats.  As a result a 9-0 team like Linfield, and others, end up with lower SoS than some 0-9 teams!  As long as the SoS is factored in, the system penalizes some better teams, and rewards some lesser teams!  (Sorry, end of rant!)  >:(

In the case of Hardin-Simmons, Linfield hurt themselves by knocking H-S's very good QB, Justin Feaster, out for the season, and also their very good receiver, ZaVious Robbins.   H-S lost their next three games without them.     That really hurt LC's SOS.    That was a shame because H-S was a very good football team before those two key injuries, far better than their 6-4 record indicated.

GO CATS! GO!

George

I saw both plays... and I don't think we "knocked out" either one. Both were just flukey injuries that happen in a football game...so if you wouldn't mind...quit making things up like that.

and your "GO CATS! GO!"  thing is rather patronizing after you've made some idiotic statement.

George:

It is ironic that H-S lost their QB in the first half, and then had a subpar season.  Reminds me that LC lost their QB at H-S the year before, and then had a subpar season.  The QB in question?  Aaron Boehme (sp?), who has been putting up superb statistics AND leadership for the'Cats!  Should be a great game Saturday!

GO 'CATS!

wildcatter23 reporting in for another year!  I'll be on the 40/25 second play clock again, the Lord willing.  (Those stairs up to the press box get longer and steeper every year!!)

GO CATS!  54 in '09!

Regarding the resolution of the blocked FG attempt, recovered and advanced by Linfield: Bob Flood was up in the press box and gave an explanation.  Bob is a long-time official and was head of the Salem  Officials group until last year or so.  He had the rule book with him and had to go into it to check.  Yes, the rule was CHANGED, after the "Miracle (Miserable?) in the Mud" play which cost the Cats a playoff game a few years back.  I will not attempt to explain it, as I have not seen or read the rule, but Bob stated the officials came to the right conclusion after all the discussion.

Solution next time?  Tighten up so we DON'T GET OUR KICKS BLOCKED!  We seem to have become more vulnerable in both aspects of our kicking game: punts and FG attempts.

On another subject: I missed most (all?) of the buildup to the disappearance of Oxybob, but I hope he will keep reading SCIAC and NWC postings and come back to us.  I enjoyed his comments and insightful observations.  With that in mind, let's ALL OF US keep the insults and garbage comments out of our own literary postings. OK?

Regarding the OSC vs USC game last night, you might say the Beavers tested the Trojans, and USC failed the "Quizz" (Rogers).  (Just a semi-humorous pun!)

For those of you that remember their history, Linfield was well represented!  Head coach Mike Riley, asst. coach Jay Locey, and Offensive Coordinator Danny Langsdorf are all former Wildcat coaches, and Danny was a Wildcat quarterback, as well as being the son of former LC coach Langsorf, who now scouts for NFL teams.  All in all, quite a show last night.

Just a follow-up thought on the new play clock use of both 40 second and 25 second settings: Linfield's new scoreboard has the ability to program both times, with separate buttons to bring up either as the case warrants.

I think some of the schools with older equipment (and only one setting) will be having a problem with this new rule.  It will be interesting to see if the equipment manufacturers put on a big push to sell new boards, or if someone can come up with a quick fix to modify the older boards to handle this.

I just wonder if the Rules Committee had surveyed the schools to know how many would have problems implementing this drastic change because of scoreboard equipment using only one setting for the play clock!

Should be something else to watch this year, especially early in the season.

Addendum for those who don't know: I have been the football play clock operator for Linfield football since it became mandatory for Linfield's playoff games, as well as basketball timer/scoreboard operator since WAY BACK!  (Some say before mud was invented.)

For those of you waiting for the 2008 season, you might be interested in the NEW modifications to the operation of both the PLAY CLOCK, and the GAME CLOCK.  If I can post the URL here (courtesy of "Super T"), it should be interesting, especially in the early games.

Good luck following the chanrs.

It may not be my MOST memorable memory, but one that stands out is the 1984 championship game at Wortman Field (home of the McMinnville High Grizzlies).  I was running the scoreboard, as usual, and Ezra Koch was running the game clock.  At halftime, with the Wildcats behind (and scoreless), Ez had to leave for a niece's wedding, saying he would be back as soon as he could.  Well, while he was gone, the 'Cats finally kicked a field goal late in the third quarter and started to roll!

In the fourth quarter the 'Cats began to roll, and I exclaimed to the rest of those in the pressbox "If Ez gets back, he's NOT going to det back on this clock!  To make it short, the 'Cats roared back from a 22-0 deficit to win 33-22!  And the rest of the story?  Ez was broadsided by a young driver a few blocks from the stadium, and did not get back for the fantastic finish.

I have been active for the 'Cats ("since dirt was invented" as some say), and currently do the 25-second play clock for football, and the game clock and scoreboard for women's and men's basketball.

And finally : GO 'CATS!!!

That's great news, Tuxguy!
It's good that he's in the area so you and Mrs. Tuxguy won't have to travel far to go to the games, too.

Are you bringing up the free pizza just to taunt Beancounter?

Coco-  You should know that B'counter works the stats for the 'Cats home games, and so is present for the pizza and pop at halftime!  I know, as I am there, too!

Tuxguy- congrats on TGJr's new job - I know he'll do well.

I am debating driving up for the game. But the 45 mins it took to get from McMinnville to Dundee (like 12 miles) after the game makes me think twice!! :o It sure made me miss I94 after a Johnnie game!! ;)
Quote

Bennie-  Next time DON'T take 99W through Dundee.  Check with the locals to use the backroad to go into Newberg by way of the road north from Lafayette (Abbey Road) and then east to UBG (Newberg).  You'll miss a LOT of traffic.

Just a note to the superstitious or numerologists.

For backgound it was noted that "pdxpio" was a Lewis and Clark alum from Portland (PDX is the FAA identifier for Portland International Airport).

Well, McMinnville's airport identifier is MMV; that is also Roman numeral for 2005; that means this is McMinnville's year, and by extension McMinnville's Linfield College!  GO CATS!!  ALL THE WAY!!!!

General football / Re: Top 25 rankings

Maybe they should just say they received the 43rd (or whatever) most votes in the voting for the 25 top teams in d3football.  Not that it would really mean much, but it would be more accurate, IMHO.
