Not-so-good news on the Gunderson injury front.  Seems he tore his other ACL and damaged his meniscus in warm-ups for the Bethel game  :o

He plans on playing this season...it'll be interesting to see how that pans out.

Duff,

Gunderson wears the protective knee braces after the injury last year, are you familiar with how that type of a brace will help if at all?  After all he did get this second injury WHILE WEARING the braces on his knees....ouch!

No, I am not familiar with knee braces at all.  I'm one of the lucky ones to never have a serious knee injury.  I do know it is entirely possible to play without an ACL, but I don't know how it will affect his performance (ie will he be 50%, 75%, 90%???).  The kid is a stud and deserves props for giving it whirl, but I hope his expectations are realistic.

If Hvistendahl could break Jerry Rice's record on a torn ACL and go for over 200 yds receiving in that game, I'm guessing Gunderson might be able to make it work.  I feel like a torn ACL is less of a liability for a D-lineman than a WR.  Then again, Hvisty only had to play one game that way, not the remainder of the season.

As a D-lineman he'll probably be able to play although it might hurt his explosiveness a little.  The actual torn ACL doesn't really hurt or anything, there is just a lack of stability and being a D-lineman and not having to make that many explosive cuts, etc. he can probably be fine.  The meniscus may cause some pain but as long as it isn't catching and locking his knee up he should be good.  I've seen a QB play with a torn ACL before as well, so it is possible.

As to the braces, I played with one the year after tearing my ACL (absolutely hated it), and they are supposed to help prevent some of the movements / twisting that commonly causes ACL tears, but obviously they must not be 100% reliable.

On another note, all is well in Northfield for another year as the Knights keep the goat trophy.  Looked much better than against Bethel, they are really young so they should continue to improve as the year goes on.

Is Pitcher Day like "Case Day" at Gustavus?

Is that any different than "Case Day" at SJU...or any college, for that matter?  ;)

I have heard good things about Case Day, but ask anyone that has visited Beer Olympics at Carleton and there is no match.

So much fun I've been to at least 6 of them, but then again Carleton has (or at least had) a significantly more liberal alcohol policy than most of the other MIAC schools.

Planning on catching the Knights against Bethel this weekend so I can get my first look at them this year.  Not sure what to expect with them being so young, but they have been bringing in better athletes over recent years so who knows.  Hopefully they can continue to put the zealots in their place as has been the case the last few years.

Tried a local favorite brew down here last night called "Magic hat #9"  Quite possibly one of the best beers I have ever had.  Anyone else familiar with it?  You can really only find in on the East Coast I've been told.

Drank it a fair amount when I lived in NYC around 5 years ago, quite tasty.  I did buy a sixer of it in Milwaukee earlier this summer when I randomly spotted it.

In other news, I'm not so ready for summer to end but definately ready to get the season started.  Hopefully the knights can continue to improve and stay around the top of the conference again this year.

Jordan Berg a Gagliardi finalist?
What is this?  An award for immobile quarterbacks that throw a lot of interceptions?

As I said earlier that I would comment on this portion - Jordan tore his PCL and played on it.  One of the key reasons that he was so immoble! Now, I will stand on my soap box and proclaim that my 40 time was faster than his my last year at Augsbugs (and trust me, mine was no where in the 'fast' realm!) and as such, I do agree that Jordan wasn't the fastest and most mobile QB. However, I don't think his extreme lack of mobility this year was all his doing. The knee brace he had to wear greatly compromised his ability to use his leg, and, I did notice a lack of velocity in his ball this year due to the right leg not being fully normal!

I'm glad to see him up for the Gagliardi award. Jordan is a great student and a good guy off the field. His on-field accomplishments were wonderful, but the Gagliardi award is supposed to highlight all what is meant by D3 football - someone who works hard and succeeds not only on the football field!

I'm a little surprised by the lack of commentary on the board with Royce's conference MVP selection. I thought that there might be a bit of argument from some of the Knight fans on this board.

Yeah Helfling had a shot at it. I think Roy's opportunity to play both sides of the ball helped him out.

Winford was very deserving, especially playing both ways.  I think if Carleton would have hung on to beat St. Johns than there would be more of an argument for a Carleton player.

Don't most conferences wait until the entire season is over?

Conference season is over.  I would imagine it'll be soon.

Looks like they were announced Nov 19th last year, but that was also after the first round of the playoffs.  It should probably be within the next week or two.

Congrats to the Johnnies, good luck in the playoffs!!
Congrats to the Knights on a great year.

I can't believe the end of the game, going to have to drink that one off tonight.  I totally thought we had that one.

A great game despite the loss, the players left everything on the field.  Nice to see that many people at a football game in Northfield, things are definately looking up for the future for the knights.

Whatever happened to OleFan?

St. Olaf  3-4 0.429 133 189  5-4 0.556 173 203 5-4 Won 2

Two of those three conference wins were huge for the Knights (GAC & UST) and were a big reason the Knights are playing for the conference championship tomorrow.  So for the first and possibly last time I'd like to thank the Ollies  :D for being a good neighbor and helping the Knights out.

I thought you MIAC folks would enjoy this headline from the UW-Stevens Point student newspaper.  Forgive them for they know not of what they speak.

Ollies sounds good to me :D

The price to be paid for having such a silly team name in the first place.  Oles, Ollies, what's the difference  ;)

Go KNIGHTS!!!!!
Looking forward to the game tomorrow.  Safe travels to all those making the trip, even if it's in a limo bus.

I wouldn't blame Carleton administration for charging admission for this one.  At 5 bucks a pop it could be worth about $25-30k.  That would be a nice boost to their athletic budget!

That would be a nice revenue boost, but it won't happen as it goes against the principals of the institution.  The only time they charge admission is when it is mandated by the NCAA for playoff games.  It's been that way as far back as I can recall, and is true for all athletic events.  Who knows though, with the economy the way it is lately it has to be hurting the endowment so maybe we'll see a change in the future, but I doubt it.  Just remember to buy some concessions at the game with the money you'll save and support the C-Club and Carleton athletics.

have them stock the concession cart with Hamms and you might be able to cut tuition in half after this game  :)

How great would that be.  Carleton is a wet campus...although I'm pretty sure the reason they don't sell alcohol is more of an NCAA / insurance / liability thing.  If I recall I believe no alcohol is allowed at athletic events, although that wasn't heavily inforced during my years there...foamy beer in a see through Nalgene bottle is not that sneaky.

Any predictions for the attendance at Laird Stadium on Saturday?
Will it be filled?

It's a pretty large stadium and I have yet to see it filled, but Saturday would be as good a chance as any.  I have a feeling with the way the Johnnie fans travel and the magnitude of the game it should be pretty packed.  The Carleton student body is at times appathetic towards its athletic teams, but when teams do well students and even people from Northfield will come to games.  The basketball teams were good when I was in school and the tournament / playoff games were absolutely packed and rowdy.  Crowds this year have started to get bigger due to the success of the team, and the school itself has made an effort to get people out to the football game (and soccer playoff games) as I've already received multiple emails about the games.  I know I have other alum friends that will be there for the game from out of state and even out of country.  Should be a great game and day, and unlike anywhere else in the MIAC admission is free.

Should be an interesting game at Carleton...anyone know what the field is like?

Not sure, most of the games played there this year have been in good weather so the field looked to be in decent shape the last time I was down there (a few weeks ago), but I don't know if it got torn up in the Hamline game.  A lot will come down to whether the ground is frozen or not, as a frozen field provides much less traction.  Not sure how much of a role the field itself will play in it, but the advantage probably goes to Carleton being they play on the surface on a regular basis.

I'm predicting another shootout type game as that seems to be the way all of the Knights games of late are.  The Knights have been giving up a lot of yards on the ground the last couple weeks and the defense makes me nervous at times.  They do have a couple playmakers on D, and come up with some timely big plays.  The big matchup in my opinion is whether the stout Johnnie D can slow down / stop the Knight's offense.  The knights have been putting up big numbers on O, and have experienced skill players, especially at QB.  Ramler always seems to have amazing gameplans against the Johnnies as well.  It should be an excellent game, quite exciting for us Carleton fans to actually be in a final game that means something.

A bit of rye with alot of Kentucky Blue Grass thrown in for effect.....

...and the amazing thing about this stuff is you can play 36 holes on it, then you can take some home and get stoned out of the bejesus with it.

Seems late in the week and no one is talking about football.  Are people so concerned about their teams games that they don't want to banter back and forth with the opposition?

Hamline played both Bethel and Augsburg close, is Saturday the day they come thru?

Are the Tommies PO'd enough about last week to take it out on the Knights?

Will the Ole's revert back to their ole ways and play with a chip on their shoulders? (maybe personal fouls were not so bad)

Maybe even GAC suprises everyone and wins two big ones in a row.

This weekend could see big changes in the MIAC race.

It would definately be nice if the Pipers could pull the upset this weekend.  Hopefully the Knights can bounce back from a tough loss last weekend and start a new win streak against the Tommies.  Should be a good game.  The Tommies haven't switched to a spread offense yet have they?  Seems like that is the achilles heel of the knights D.
