Where's the Augie vs B-W talk?  Isn't Augie still in the CCIW?

Interestingly, they ran a series out of the spread/shotgun, although I'm not sure they attempted any passes from it.

They did in fact attempt and get one completion out of this new fangled formation known as the shotgun!

Carroll's guards were quicker and didn't miss a shot.

I think Carroll started the game 0 for 5 and their guards were taking those shots. Hatch another theory.

How about whenever Augie would pull close to get within reach, they (particularly Drury -- 32 points, several from behind the arc) didn't miss.

757 attendence are u kidding me! Hello Auggie students.  Carroll College was nervous last year playin the Titans in the first round.  Now they are a team peaking at the right time.

Augie is on spring break, so none of the students are allowed to stay on campus.  In addition to that, about an hour before game time the snow storm hit town that had closed I-80 from Nebraska to Des Moines and I-380 between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.  The entire pro-Augie crowd came from the local population and it certainly was an older one that what you would have encountered during any of the regular season games.  That being said I thought that there was a large number of people there from what I was expecting.  Especially since parts of the Quad Cities still don't have power after last Saturday's ice storm.

As for the game, guard play and turnovers.  Carroll's guards were quicker and didn't miss a shot.  In the first half Augie had 13 turnovers and Carroll had 1.  Carroll led by 4 at the half and at the end of the game.  I think that those four points could have easily been made up somewhere in the differential between the 12 t/o's.  Augie played well as a team for about 4-5 minutes in the second half and that is when they went up by 8, but soon after that they were down by 8.  Congrats to Carroll who obviously came to play and congrats to Coach G and the entire Viking team on a strong season.

We had a DT at Augie in the mid-80's (Lynn Thomsen) whose tackle statistics weren't all that impressive, but if you asked anyone who played or coached against him, they will all tell you what a great player he was.  Opposing coaches would design offensive game plans with his presence in mind.  Regardless of statistics, when coaching staffs take into account the abilities of a single player into their game plans, it says alot about the talent of that player.

Lynn Thomsen is certain in any discussion talking about all time great CCIW defensive linemen.  He truely was an incredible player.  I recall how much respect Coach Bishop and staff gave to him in preparing to play Augie.  If I'm not mistaken, he wasn't 100% in one of the Wheaton/Augie games I played in due to ankle or knee injury and he still was all over the place.

Evidently more than your Coach respected him...He is in the College Football Hall of Fame....and his wife used to be my babysitter when I was just a wee tot. ;D

What was the defense 11 in the box? Were the defenses that good or the offenses that bad?    I know I have mentioned it before but it just seems you guys have got to do more with your offense than "Well it has worked for us in the 80's so it must still work for us now." The forward pass was invented a long time ago and somebody there ought to look into making that part of your offense. I think you have almost equaled your '05 pass attempts in the first two games so I guess that is progress. BW as you already know was picked in the middle of the OAC pack for this year and I don't know if this win really changes that. We will see as the OAC campaign begins this week.

Raiderguy I would say that the defense of BW looked strong, but Augie's O looked flat all day long.  I didn't see them last week against MacMurry, but I don't think those would be comparable defenses.  As for the BW O and the Augie D, BW shot themselves in the foot a few times with penalties on at least 2 plays that would have been for 30+ yards.  #13 was tough for the Vikes to stop, especially off the draw play.  Now it wasn't so much the number in the box for BW, because trust me, Augie has seen 11 in the box for the last 20 years and has been able to perform sucessfully against it.  What i was impressed with was the D-lines ability to penetrate into the back field and get an early hit on the Augie Runningbacks and the domination of speed as well.  That is one thing that Augie has [/i]always[/i] had that does not seem appearant this year -- that one back that can just tear down the field.  As for the forward pass, we have infact surpassed our NCAA record setting season total of 21 passes attempted in just 2 games.  I was actually pleased with the way that Augie moved the ball in the 2 minute offense with a nice mix of pass and run.  They moved it well on the drive with the exception of the last 2 yards.  I would have to check, but that might have been the longest drive of the game.  The longest scoring drive by either team was only 39 yards and one of them (BW's Fieldgoal) was for -2 yards.  As for BW being a mid-leaguer, I think that just goes to show you how deep to OAC is this year.  I think that it's history in the playoffs over the past several years would support that.  Once again, Congrats to BW.

Congrats to the OAC teams coming into the CCIW and taking care of business.  I hate to see it happen, but I have no problem giving props when they are due.  BW came ready to stop the run at Augustana and clearly over matched the Vike's O-line.  Your Lbackers did  a great job of filling whatever holes that Augie was able to create in the line.  I know that last year was a down year for the Yellow Jackets, but it looks like you are on the road to recovery.  Congrats on a strongly fought contest.

I was at the Augie game and it was tough to watch from an offensive perspective.  The defense played very well and did enough to give them a chance to win.  However, turning the ball over twice deep in your own territory in the 4th quarter will not get it done.  Augie's QB made several huge mistakes in the 4th quarter, two poor pitches (one which BW recovered and one which resulted in a big loss when they were driving) and a very poor throw which was was intercepted and returned to the Augie 12.

BW really came to play and was getting after it the entire game.  Augie's offense came out flat and stayed there.  Very little excitement or emotion shown by any of the players on Offense.  I also thought the play calling was questionable, way too much option with very little success (both of the fumbled pitches were on option plays).  One of the things we all noticed is that Augie doesn't seem to have great speed with any of their backs.  All have decent speed, but they don't seem to have the one or two guys who can break the big runs like we have in the past.  Hopefully, they can get back on track next week in Wisconsin against Platteville.
I have to agree with you and add a little.  My thoughts about Augie were that they looked slow- not only the running backs but the O-line too.  And that they looked small.  I know that monstro sized is not anything that is essential for the Wing-T, but they really looked over matched and could not create the holes that were needed for the backs to pop through.  And when they did have the holes there, BW's linebackers did a great job of filling those gaps and getting the tackles.  McGinnis really looked out of sorts during the whole game.  The pitches in the 4 Qtr were horrible decisions and there were pitches that he didn't make earlier in the game that I thought he should have made.  It isn't like he doesn't know the option either, because that is what he played under at Alleman HS.  I thought that it was interesting how much Augie threw the ball.  They have already surpassed their last season's attempts in just the first two games.  Incidently, I thought that they looked good running the 2 minute offense...until the final 2 yards.  Make no doubt about it, BW came to play ready to stop the run.  Hopefully, Augie can repeat their ability to rebound like last year.  I sure would like to see them looking much sharper than they did on Saturday.

I also heard that Augie's A.D. told their staff the same exact thing.  There must have been some call to the A.D.'s today during which they explained that if Lawrence is part of the Sectional field, they're the host.

I assume we're all traveling to Appleton.

Q,
While I think the trip North is correct, I know that neither the Augie AD or SID had any indication as to where the sectional would be.  The Augie AD spoke on the PA saying that they when they found out, they would post it on their website.  In fact when asked the question the reply was that, "We won't know until we get a call tomorrow."  So, I am quite confident that their wasn't a call today.  However, I think the result will be the same.  Truth be told, I don't think it is the wrong thing either that the only undefeated team gets to host.  That would mean that I can't go to the game, but it isn't a perfect world.  Congrats to both Augie and IWU on knocking off the WIAC tonight.  I know that it was good for the Vikes to get a little revenge tonight and any time a team wins against Whitewater on their home court they have to earn it.  Sounds like the Titans certainly proved their mettle.

Dan,
Yes you are correct that Christianson played for St. John's (MN).  I never saw him play either, but I sure reconized the face from the local sportscasts and the papers.  One thing is for sure, come tourney time you need everyone to step up, so to see that from Delp and Rukavina tonight is huge.  You never know when someone might get injured or get in foul trouble and you need extra people to come in and suck up some minutes while the starters are on the bench.

Dansand,
I think that you have been in the QC's for a while, did you recognize one of UW Stout's assitants.  At 7'2" Kipp Christiansen shouldn't have been difficult to miss.  I knew I recognized him from somewhere.  I checked out the Stout website and found out that he had played for the Quad City Thunder of the CBA back in 2001.

Tonights game was really quite remarkable for the Vikes.  To give up the first 8 points of the game, to shoot something like 37%, and to have given up 10 turnovers by half -- and go into the locker room tied!  Wow.  Then when Augie opened up the second half with such a strong start I was quite encouraged.  I thought that the ref's were pretty consistant as far as calling things equally between the two teams, however I thought that they were much more liberal with play in the second half.  A much more physical game after the intermission.  I hope that next weekend will be at Carver, but I have a feeling that they will have a long cold trip up north to Appleton.  I won't be able to make that trip, but whoever does can make a stop at Lombardi's Steakhouse and see the trophy!

Please please put the Sectional at Carver or The Shirk.

It gets announced tomorrow at some point.  Augie's AD said that they will put it up on their website as soon as they know.

Great article in the Quad City Times about the Swetalla family at Augie.

www.qctimes.net/articles/2006/02/03/sports/doc43e30880e4602681515672.txt

I'm glad that they decided to transfer this year. They've been an important asset to the team.

Nice family story...  This weekend also happens to be Alumi weekend.  There figures to be a few players around from the '93 team rooting on the most solid team to have a chance to go deep into the playoffs since then.

I've been out selling insurance all day.  It's off to feed the pigs.

That one made me chuckle... not because you said it, but because it's true!

(... cept for the pigs part, probably...)

I just got some pigs insured today, does that count for anything?
