Wing T-

I think the real thriller of that era had to be the Beaty kid from Wartburg...

or perhaps the two e-ends from Wartburg that held Kac in check in 94.

But then I'm bias also.

That's really ironic. I emailed him yesterday also. He hasn't replied yet. I have not followed Moon Valley this year so I don't know if he's still in season.

I have talked to him a couple of time over the years but we never discussed the situation of his leaving Waverly. I hope that there are no hard feelings between him and Wartburg.

As an old alumnus, I would love to see a fellow alumni named to the Wartburg Position. I am looking for some insight:

Roger Britson - great motivator, intelligent coach. I wonder if there are any hard feelings towards Wartburg because he was passed over when Bob Nielson left. At one time Roger was the ultimate "Knight." Someone in an earlier post mentioned that Klunder bleeds black and orange. Britson was influential on Klunder.

Don Knock - Fifteen years ago Coach Knock was so loyal to Central that no other IIAC school existed. I wonder if that loyalty still exists. Is Knock still at ISU? I thought he was at a smaller coach in Nebraska as a Head Coach.

Klunder - Good guy, I am curious how long he will stay at Notre Dame. Correct me if I am wrong, but he really doesn't do much coaching as the director of football operations. I doubt if he's leave that post.

I wonder if Bob Nielson would consider comming back to Waverly if his kids were graduated from high school.

Floyd,
I agree that Coach Canfield was a very good coach. Perhaps he would have been able to advance to the playoff in 93-94, like Nielson did, had he stayed in Waverly and not left for St. Olaf. More than a coach, Don Canfield was good man.

I also agree that the quality of athletics (overall) is more competitive today than it was in the early 90's. I think that is attributed to the attitude that Mill-boy brought to campus and the leadership of Nielson as AD.

I just think that Mr. Underhill needs to get a clue. There is more to Wartburg football history than simply the past 8 years. When an alumnus questions why the current staff does not attract quality alumni as coaches to enhance tradition, Underhill answers by calling us "fickle motherf**kers." Obviously, he doesn't understand the Wartburg - Luther rivalry.

Maybe I am a "fickle mother f**ker" as Mr. Underhill suggests. Especially when it comes to seeing the Knights play so poorly and being beat by Luther!.The only time that I ever saw a Bob Nielson team play so poorly against Luther was....... NEVER! Keep in mind that Bob Nielson was an alumni coach also.

Underhill, or perhaps it is undereducated or ungrateful, check your history. The two alumni that I mentioned in my post each played in the playoffs and each of them beat Central twice. Look at the history, the Knights became perennial playoff contenders in the early 90's. Additionally, when they were upperclassmen, they would have never allowed a performance like Saturday (especially at Luther). Take the Willis-blinders off! You obviously have no respect for the athletes of the early 90's that began the winning tradition at Wartburg. (Penningroth, Klunder, Beatty, Rockford, Harve, Shannon, or Smith) Bob Nielsen instilled a winning tradition at Wartburg and Willis has carried that on. Remember that Canfield, although he was a great person, turned over an average program to Nielson. Additionally, keep in mind that if it were not for Chad Klunder and other athletes from that era that the Willis-era athletes would not have the $100,000 weight room that they do. I can remember Klunder and Entz spending their Christmas break building platforms for the team to lift on. Should alumni of this caliber return to Wartburg to coach, they would bring with them the tradition of being a winner at Wartburg.

Why is it that when there is a vacancy on the Wartburg staff, Willis doesn't go after some of the alumni coaches? Matt Entz and Chad Klunder type of coaches.  (it might be tough to get Kunder away from ND). Only an alumnus could understand the gravity of playing in a dang Luther game!

I can't speak of what it is like playing for Willis. I posted after the first loss and was informed that Willis only deals with the defense. Well perhaps it is time for Willis to exercise some influence on both sides of the ball. It is obvious that mechanics suck with the turnovers and inconsistency on offense. It would be less painful if the Knights had played well and lost.

As much as it pains me - Congrats to the Norse.

What is going on in Waverly? Perhaps Willis took on too much when he accepted the AD position. From the sounds of it he didn't have the Knights ready on Saturday.
