Well Lakeland,
It was a nice run but its time to bow down to the CCIW once again.  You think Carthage's Defense was tough wait until Augie just levels you.  They are the top dogs in the CCIW this year.  And you thought you had a rushing attack. HAHAHA have fun stopping the Wing-T.

Go CCIW and Go Augie!

Usee,
I don't think that will matter in Augie's case. I mean you know that they are going to run the ball. The only thing is if you have the athletes and large bodies on Defense to stop them (example Carthage) and if not then you better have the athletes on Offense to score 1 more point than they do (example Central).  Not saying that Central has better athletes than Augie by any means just using the score and the way you must play the game as an example.

North Central on the other hand will benefit with that because now they will get a better look at what Capital is running and develop a game plan that will be successful against them.

I think both schools win their first round games, Augie wins easy, while North Central pulls out another close one thanks to the senior leadership that they have.

Go CCIW!

Just looking at the final CCIW stats really illustrates what a remarkable turnaround Augie's defense made this year. They led the conference in every major defensive category: rush defense, pass defense, total defense (obviously), scoring defense, pass efficiency defense, red zone defense, and fewest opponents' first downs. They were second in sacks and opponents' 3rd down conversions and third in opponents' 4th down conversions. Considering how tough the Carthage D was this year, that's pretty amazing. Since, other than Anthony (DPOY in my opinion), their defense doesn't really have a lot of stars, it'll be interesting to see how they fair in all-conference selections. I would think Aaron Call and Jeremy Hall on the line and any or all of their linebackers, as well as Shea, should get some recognition. Also, Mike Guzman should be a lock for a first team selection on offense.

Augie's Defense was outstanding.  There are two sets of stats, All Games and CCIW Games. Augie leads in almost everything in CCIW Games, Carthage leads in All Games.  Obviously you would want to stake claim to the CCIW Games.  If Augie's Defense keeps playing to this level they can go a long way, especially because these teams they are about to face have not seen Augie on a year in year out basis. And that the speed at which their Offense runs you can not simulate in practice and makes it hard to prepare for in less than a weeks time.  Congrats to Augie and NCC for the playoffs. I know you will represent the CCIW well.

Question Pat,

Say Augie loses two of its three like they did last year, NCC wins out and so does Carthage.  The Committee would prob take Augie with a 7-3 record vs. Carthage being at 8-2, because of beating them head to head.  But my real question is would there be a way that they take 3 from the conference being that is was so tough and maybe send the third team out of Region?

At CUW we scrimmage Carthage every year before the season begins and we handle them every year. They are a respected team who is no better than the top teams in the IBFC.  The problem is there is little to no compairison between the top and bottom of the IBFC.  There are some pretty bad teams, but there are also some pretty good teams.

OH MY GOD, YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. I ALMOST FELL OUT OF MY CHAIR LAUGHING SO HARD AT THIS. YOU ARE BASING YOUR ENTIRE ARGUMENT ON A SCRIMAGE. A SCRIMAGE DOES NOT MEASURE HOW A TEAM IS GOING TO DO IN THE REGULAR SEASON.  I BET ITS THE KIND OF SCRIMAGE WHERE EACH OFFENSE GETS LIKE 20 PLAYS IN A ROW AND IF THEY DON'T AND IF THEY DON'T GET A FIRST DOWN THEY MOVE BACK TO THEIR OWN 40 YARD LINE. YOU CAN NOT TELL ME THAT YOU HONESTLY THINK THAT CONCORDIA'S OFFENSE WOULD BE ABLE TO MOVE THE BALL ON A STINGY CARTHAGE DEFENSE.

I agree on North Centrals defense not being what they should be. Returning 10 of 11 starters, two all-americans, returning CCIW POY. Not to mention was staticaly the best defense in 2004 holding aponents to under 100 yards rushing. What is going on?!? I think it starts with the cards defensive line. With all four returning from last year, including an all-american D-end. You'd think they would be one of the best in the conference... I've been to all two of NCC's home games and the IWU game this last week. I've seen the entire d-line not do so well. At IWU and Wheaton I have yet to see them get any pressure on a QB. The defense is giving up 20-25 ponits a game as a whole. I think this is a promblem going into a tough game like this week against Carthage. I think this will be the game of the week in the CCIW... #1 offense vs. #1 defense. It should be a low scoring game with alot of turnovers. I belive for NCC to win they will have to establish their running game with #26. For Carthage to win they will have to come up HUGE on defense. Rememer this game was very close last year minus Carthage's all-american running back. However, for Carthage to stay alive this is do or die. The Redmen will come to play, but so will the Cardinals.

If I remember correctly Carthage not NCC had the TOP DEFENSE in 2004 (with three extra games played due to playoffs) and still has the TOP Defense. Just because of the politics of ALL-AMERICAN, does not make you a great defense.  Carthage's Defense Shut down an AMAZING Augie rushing attack.  The total yards that Augie gained against Carthage this year and NCC last year was the exact same.  So then we must go to the points given up 7 for Carthage 10 for NCC.  Its all there in black and white you just have to look for it.

That said I do believe it will be a low scoring affair for NCC this weekend and the Carthage Offense will look to rebound, that being said...
Carthage 21
NCC 10

I don't think there is anyway Mount Union will slip up this year.  Especially if ONU is not allowed in the playoffs after their appeal is heard.  But I have a feeling that there will be two teams from the CCIW again in the playoffs, and as of now either one of them will give the Raiders a fight just like the Thunder and the Redmen did last year.

Question for OAC fans, now that Ohio Northern is being punished do you think this could lead to them pointing the finger at other members in the conference stating that, "We know they do this..." or "We know of that this is going on...." Just a quesiton.

On Carthage's future schedule its says they will still play Lakeland till 2009 and add Hope in 2008 and 2009.  There is a rumor around that they are trying to get a UW school.  Not sure how much truth there is in that though, because the 2008 and 2009 schedule are missing a game and that is probably Carroll unless the Musket Game dies again. Who knows?

Pat you were right I was wrong. See I can admit my mistakes.

One way I know Lakeland will get their yards rushing is that last year they had over 300 against Whitewater and Carthage held them to 48 last year.  Last week it was 52 rushing yards for Lakeland, if the formula holds true....watch out Whitewater.

I agree with Mugsy, you concentrate on the polls you will lose and it will be a huge distraction.

Despite what people might think, Carroll is a much better team.  And the Lakeland / Carthage match up has the makings of a rivarly, at least for the past couple of years.
Scores...
2001-  Carthage 21   Lakeland 15
2002-  Lakeland 37   Carthage 34
2003-  Lakeland 17   Carthage 16
2004-  Carthage 18   Lakeland 14
2005-  Carthage 20   Lakeland 16

The proof is right there, Carthage and Lakeland is developing into a rivalry. Carthage shut down their running game and I will be willing to bet that the Lakeland/Whitewater game will be high scoring and that Lakeland will get their rushing yards on Whitewater. Whitewater's offense is way better than Carthage's, but as the old slogan goes DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Plus why is everyone all excited that North Central beat Benedicitne, we knew it would happen but what we didn't know was the Benedictine would put up those types of numbers.  If it wasn't for a score with 3 seconds left in the half that Halftime score would have been 17-14.  And Wheaton coming back to beat Gustavus.  Just stating that teams what a piece of the CCIW this year and just winning games should be good enough. Plus I feel the level of non-conference games the CCIW plays is very good, it gets the teams ready for a BRUTAL conference schedule. Those close wins will help those teams down the road regardless of what you and I are saying about how that team got lucky. The point is that they got the job done.

So if Carthage some how develops an offense this week and beats Benedictine 45-0 they will jump up in the polls if Whitewater wins by 3 over Lakeland.

Wow, Mad dog got a little mad, just like a typical Lakeland guy to bitch and moan when things don't go his way.  Ohh so the Qb is your son, I would be mad too if my son took a beating like that. Second I was at the game I believe there were only 2 penalties for roughing the passer not 8. The reason I know its not 8 cause in the stats that are posted on the web for ALL TO SEE it says 5 penalities for 40 yards. Last time I checked a roughing the passer penalty was 15. Unless that was a new rule change that I am unaware of.  If Barrie can run through a brick wall which is basically what you are trying to say to me why didn't they go to him more instead of 5 times.  That to me is not showing a lot of faith in your "Player of the Week."

Now seriously though Lakeland is a tough team they will give teams trouble down the road but after this next week if they don't win the rest of their games, taking injuries out of there, that is horrible.  Had it not been for Lakeland going deep on a 3rd and 4 against Northwestern with about 2 minutes left in the game their first game score would have been 20-15 wow that almost looks like the score Carthage just beat you by.

Again though take nothing away from Lakeland just when plays needed to be made they didn't make them and the fact that their 300 pound linemen are holding like the defensive linemen are candy bars doesn't mean the refs lost you the game.

Period.
