I don't know about you, but I would say that the turnover (field position) killed the game for the kohawks!
I agree, field position killed the game for the Kohawks.

Offensive inefficiency killed the Kohawks, along with:
Field position
The start of the 3rd qtr (on defense)
Tournovers
Special Teams (not only the blocked punt, but kick off coverage) - how many times did Central start a drive on the Coe side of the field?
Execution - again, on the offense
Coaching miscues - come on, dont kick a field goal when you need waaayyy more then 3

I mentioned that before.  As a Dutch fan I was happy to see a FG kicked then.  I didn't think they would be able to get three more scores to tie let alone win.  It seems like they were more worried about laying an egg on the scoreboard than with winning.  Just my two cents.  I felt at that point if they had scored a TD they had enough time to score two more TD's to win but not enough time for three scores.

Exactly!  Coe seems to be happy with a FG instead of having the guts to "go for it".   Can you say "conservative".   They even tried a field goal at the end of the first half with a first down and 10 seconds left.  They had time for at least one more play that would have gotten them closer.   I have been at the last two home games for Coe.  Being a Wartburg Alum but living in CR it is easy to see why the "lady kohawks" are 2-5:

•   Their old coach is at Wabash 6-0, ranked 4th or 6th depending on what poll you look at
•   No fire in warm-ups or during any part of the game - talk about a lack of senior leadership
•   Predictable offensive play calling
•   Soft Offensive line - they do have a great running back in #3
•   No QB
•   A secondary that can't cover anyone

Nice new field turf but otherwise shabby facilities that don't impress recruits (it appeared they did have some recruits on campus, but with those performances the last two Saturdays, I am sure they went home saying, "I'd rather go to Wartburg"

What they do have is two of the best defensive ends in the IIAC and three hard hitting linebackers.  If those five guys are not first team all conference, and then something is wrong.   I see they have the # 1 defense in total yards with that offense that keeps them on the field all day long.  Oh well, at least they get to play a lot.  With the loss of #53 though they are in trouble up the middle, have fun Luther.

Hopefully for Warburg,  Central and the rest of the IIAC,  the Coe powers that be will do continue to not support the football program and keep putting more emphasis on soccer, swing choir and the drama department.   See you in the playoffs!

Worst performance by the Knights in years!  Sad night in Waverly tonight, drinking the pain away,  but from what I hear some of them need to stay out of the bars and get their minds focused on football.   Not all of us alums are Willis fans.  Guess Koehler new the shelf was empty.   Don't worry too long though, I saw the Coe vs Cornell game,  the Knights should get back on track next week vs the lady Kohawks even if they stay out late next Friday night.   BTW is Yordi our sole rushing attack?

And Central will they ever recover from the Wartburg loss?   I guess not.   Heard they had a lot of injury.   Throwing 56 times, I can't believe it.   Congrats to the Beavers and the Norse.  Great wins!   Loras still has something to prove, beating Cornell and Coe is nothing to brag about.  They lost to Monmouth and have already had the bye.
The Duhawks next six games
Home  BV
At Wartburg
Home Dubuque
At Central
At Simpson
Home Luther

Good Luck! :-*

Hey Cochuck,

Good to see you today in Mt Vernon.  Great brats and whatever it was you had in that ......!  Coe looked good today but looks soft on the o-line.   They seemed tired in the 2nd half.  Your offense moved the ball but the Rams lost to Grinnell.    They also seem to be light at one d-line spot.  And on another note, your secondary is very suspect,  it  appeared that no one wants to hit anyone.    I expected to see much more of this stellar defense you keep talking about.  Great d-ends and LBs though.   As far as the rams........here comes 0-10.   Too bad for the Cornell players that the college doesn't put more into the program.   It just seemed that most of them quit after the first quarter.   After touring most of the other colleges over the past two years, that place is run down.   No wonder they only have 58 guys on the roster.   Those guys have some work to do.  I imagine Dillion will be gone.

Congrats to the Knights!   That Augsburg loss has to hurt though.   What is it with Willis?  Dubuque losing to Luther, that one has to be an upset.  I thought that the Spartans were out one of the top teams in the IIAC.  And BV, great win over the Storm.

Are teams really getting commitments already??
I didn't think a lot of guys made those commitments until the financial aid packages came out.
Is a "commitment" level the same as a "commitment" at the D1 level?

When do the aid packages come out?

Make that six.  Hefty is out.   We're down to Marv and Thurney

1 - Marv Levy
2- Bob Thurness
3 - Paul Hefty
4- Phiz Phillips
5- Glen Drawn
6 - DJ Leroy

That's a good one.   ;D When are they going to announce it? From my Coe connection here in CR I heard that they have still been bringing tons of kids on campus in the past three weeks and have gained commitments from quite a few.   Could be the biggest recruiting class in the past few years from what I heard.   They must have some good assistants for this to be happening.  With their defense all returning and the strength of that front, Coe might surprise some people next fall.  Now all they need is a QB to replace that TeKippe kid.

Doug,

Maybe he should try transferring to Central at semester, we heard they had a good track team.

Wartburg Football is starting up their own school newpaper.....

OK, I can no longer keep silent.  I, being neither a Kohawk fan nor a Wartburg fan am getting ill.   Maybe we should turn this board into a Warturg chat room so that they might bask in their last two seasons of finishing second........who really cares!   Oh..........I know the "Orange" do.  We're all scared now!

"Be Orange" you've got to be kidding me.

Let's talk some football!

...last I heard he was in a sanitarium near Urbandale.

Who's the front runner in the IIAC next year? Is it the usual suspects or are there some dark horses on the horizon....

Central, Coe and Wartburg.   I would look out for Coe if that TeKippe kid is back.   With him and Suckow they will be tough to beat.   I think Coe also has most of their defense back plus they get that nose-tackle Pinckney kid back from Wash that started for them in 2005.  I think he tore a bicep and had to sit out a year or something.

and Willie, no offense taken.  Just lighten up.

Although I rarely post nor have the time with three young kids and a working wife, I really enjoy this message board and read it all the time.   It really keeps me up to date in the IIAC.  Thanks to all who participate.  After graduation it is hard to stay up on all the schools and scoops of the conference but I will say you guys keep me informed.   Although not connected at all times I do have some insiders that have feed me some good information from time to time, especially on Wartburg, Central and Coe.

Wartburg over Loras 24-7 – Wartburg's defense is too fast for them and more disciplined than Coe's.   They will be better at stopping McCarron in the running game forcing the Loras QB to throw.  Loras exposed Coe's poor pass defense to set up the run.  Wartburg has a much better secondary.  Check the stat's – Coe is 8th in the IIAC in pass defense.  Should be a great game next week in Cedar Rapids.

Central over Dubuque 28-27 in OT – As Crimson and Bold mentioned, take your heart pills Central fans.  They have more than just Belleus. These guys from Dubuque are for real and if you give their defense any confidence they will just play better as the game goes on.  Central will find a way to win with good special teams play and just enough defense.  Central could get beat if their stagnant offense does not get rolling.  They will need to improve this part of their team to win the rest of their games and outscore Coe on Nov 4th.

Coe over Simpson 26-20 – This game will be closer then most of you think as Simpson is better than their 1-4 record.  If Simpson offense can exploit Coe's defense which has trouble against the pass and were ripped by Loras in the running game, they will put pressure on the conference's top scoring offense to score.    Simpson leads the league in sacks and Coe has given up 14 in just 6 games.  Very uncharacteristic of the Kohawks.

Luther over BV – 38-21 – Luther finally gets a win.  Who would have thought that the Norse would be 1-5 at this point and only be playing for pride at this point in the season.  Maybe they need to evaluate their staff and the way they recruit.  All we have heard about for the past three years is how they are rebuilding this program.  It appears they are going backwards.

Chaser,

Where do you find endowment information?  Where do the IIAC schools rank?

Thanks!

Alreadygone, check the NCAA championship handbook. All the information is in there, and nobody is making it up as they go along. If there were a conspiracy, it may well be from within the IIAC, since the regional committee (who makes the regional rankings and determined that Concordia should be higher than Coe) had two IIAC representatives and only one MIAC representative. Not to mention the Co-chair of the committee was the AD at Central, and Mr. Raeburn was also a part of the committee. The MIAC representative was Steve Johnson at Bethel, who historically has no love for either Concordia or SJU.

You can argue the 500-lb gorilla as you like, but tuition at MIAC schools generally will parallel that of IIAC schools, so the 500 to 1000 more students at MIAC schools is probably a function of location (in and around Minneapolis instead of all over Iowa) rather than competitive advantage. Considering that only 11 can play at one time, and you aren't making complaints that the IIAC teams aren't as deep as MIAC squads, I don't really get your argument. A better question is whether it is fair that WIAC schools have cheaper tuition than MIAC/IIAC squads. However, the WIAC limits its rosters to 100 persons, and with no more redshirting there, the five-year issue is pretty much dead. Not to mention their cheaper tuition is paired with 5 times the students at most MIAC/IIAC schools, so STUDENT athletes get what they pay for.

Got us good there johnnie_esq - Who are you,  some coach from SJU that has all this info about the selections?  Must be all that extra time you have up their in the artic......   This board is for fans!  Tell us more oh wise one.  Why is this Steve Johnson at Bethel on the committee?  and Mr. Raeburn, he's the nephew of the head coach from Mt Union and played and also coached there.  As I recall they have kicked your butt a few times.  It appears that he is trying to build the same tradition at Coe.  And Central is back as well.  The IIAC has been down for a while but not out.  Watch out for us in upcoming years.

Good luck in the match up with Monmouth... they'll be shakin in their boots and you'll have your JV in by the second quarter.  Try not to hurt them.

Picks for this weekend from the driver:

Wartburg drills the Rams 40-14
Loras over Dubuque 20-19
Central overwhelms BV in a game that won't be close 35-10
and Coe holds onto to beat Simpson 28-27

IIAC gets 2 teams in as UW Whitewater is shipped to the North

Iowa Conference Here,

Regarding the pairings, don't worry you'll have two.  I think most of us here in the Midwest will stay here for the first round if at all possible.  I know the NCAA does not like to fly teams in the first round but may have to.   The west coast teams will probably be forced to play each other unless there are three of them then one of them will be making the flight.  Here's the bracket as projected by D3 Football.  It is incorrect as they state and probably will have the MN league runner-up in there to replace Central, Wartburg or Coe depending on how things play out.  The IIAC will not get three teams in.  Your league will definitely have two.

Linfield Bracket
1. Linfield
2. St. John's
3. Occidental
4. Coe
5. Monmouth
6. Whitworth
7. Central
8. Wartburg

As you can see UWW has been shipped to a different region which is a high probability.   Here are the probable matchups:

1 - Two of the three west coast teams will play each other with Linfield as the host.

2 - The other west coast team will most likely be shipped to the Midwest

3 - Based on the teams forecasted to make the playoffs you can count on seedings by economics. One half of the bracket will have St Johns and three other Midwest teams.  The lone team left out will be the one that plays the west coast team and then the winner facing Linfield.  You know they are wanting to get a St Johns/Linfield match-up in the third round.

The way we see it is, (other than Linfield and St Johns the favorites), that Coe or Concordia would be the toughest draws........they are both still stinging from close losses to their arch rivals.  Coe only lost to Wartburg by 3 in which they played terrible and still almost won.  Central lost to Coe by 3 at Pella in Week 3 or 4.
Good luck!
