In regards to the free kick after the safety during the SJU/UST game.  Who actually knew prior to that that it was a live ball?  I have to admit, I was clueless.

My immediate comment was that I was really surprised that punting instead of kicking off on your free kick eliminated the possibility of you recovering.  I said that was a lot to sacrifice to punt instead of kick off.  Then the Tommies went crazy and the official signaled Tommie ball.

This is one of those really rare things like the 1 point safety in '02 or so against St. Olaf (?) when there was a 2 point conversion attempt that was turned over, the guy tried to run it out of the end zone, reentered the endzone and was tackled there.

Last night on the Thursday night SJU Football radio show something was muttered about Tom Stock trying to add lights in Collegeville.  Has anyone heard anything about this?  I guess I would prefer to keep things as they are.  Maybe more HS playoff games could be played there and that might help recruiting, and the Prep school could play night games, but I would like to keep all afternoon games for SJU.  Does anyone else have an opinion on this matter?

I agree that you can't move to a 6 week playoff.  The only way I can see getting more teams an opportunity to play more games would be to set something up like the ECAC has across the rest of the country.  This would be tough to do consistently everywhere, but it could be fun to have "bowl games" between the top, non playoff teams.  In some ways it wouldn't mean much, but I would like to go if my team went and I can't imagine that the players wouldn't want one more game.  For example, in the west, there could be three games between the top non payoff teams from the NWC-SCIAC, MIAC-WIAC, IIAC-MWC.  The second two games could even be seeded each year to allow different matchups.  You could have 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, except that you would like to give the top seeds the home games.  In any case, this won't happen, partially due to $$, but it would be fun.

I have heard only a little bit about this DIII DIV issue.  Does anyone know which conferences would opt into which division?  I can made some educated guesses, but is this information that has been published somewhere?

I will take Mariucci or Mariucci West any day over the National Concrete Center, and I'd take the DECC twice on Saturdays-- I may even think of going to the Kohl hole instead.  My personal favorite is how SCSU fans (also known around the WCHA as "Jan Brady State U." after their complaints about big sister Minnesota "Marsha-Marsha-Marsha!") have a habit of making a "Golden Chokers" chant.  This from a university that has a Zero point zero winning percentage in the NCAA playoffs.

Just like everything on the SCSU campus, the National Hockey Center isn't fancy, but I do enjoy watching games there.  The place would be looking at an upgrade if law makers would have approved the equivalent of about 8% of the money they approved for the new Gopher football stadium for an addition to the NHC.  I can't say anything to refute the "Jan Brady State U." comment.  I really think the MNSCU mission will always prevent SCSU from becoming the school that I would like to see it become.  I have some ideas about how changes could be made, but hockey is already far enough off topic...

Forgive me, but asking for a handout from the legislature to improve an arena that was a gift by the legislature to begin with is absolutely ludicrous-- especially because St. Cloud residents voted down a sales tax increase to improve the civic center-- so the state reps go to the legislature to fund an addition to the concrete center to function as the civic center instead.  Umm....why?   That it was even considered by the legislature more than ticked me off.  Meanwhile, Duluth, who actually passed a sales tax raise to pay for their share of the improvements to a 40 year old arena, doesn't get their share from the legislature to fund their arena, in part because they have to wait for St. Cloud to finish their spiel on why they shouldn't have to pay for the addition on their own  dime to the less than 20 year old arena the state built for them in the first place and gave them rent free, not to mention get all the receipts from.  Go to the back of the line!  Bemidji has more pressing needs than St. Cloud!
[/rant]

It's wonderful to talk about the two greatest sports in the world-- WCHA hockey and MIAC football.

I was going to mention Duluth because I agree that they should get an upgrade.  I am frustrated in general with how stadiums and arenas are funded.  I share your frustration with what goes on in St. Cloud (the city) in general, but I don't blame them for voting down the civic center tax increase.  Apparently the St. Cloud Times doesn't cover alll the angles to the NHC upgrade, which doesn't surprise me in the slightest, or I missed an article or two.  I actually don't see a good argument to upgrade the civic center right now, but I do see an argument to add seats to the NHC.  I won't pretend to know the best way to make that happen, but I do know that the narrow, overly simplistic view of the rural hicks that I live around and am one of is that we see a huge out pour of cash for a gopher staduim and based on how politics seem to work, we wonder if our local officials shouldn't be able to pull off something on a much smaller scale.  It would probably be an easier sell if SCSU would find a sponsor, like TCF for the Gophers, who would foot a big part of the bill, and then the request could be smaller.

Looks like it had a good one-year comeback, but it's got a long way to go to match the consistency and prestige of Gagliardi. Don't you agree?

I will have some thoughts on this year's Gagliardi field in ATN, which should be going up tomorrow (Weds.)

I do agree, but I found it interesting that it made a comeback after a couple of years without a winner.

There was a winner for 2003, 2004 and 2005. They appear to have disavowed those winners!

Daniel Pincelli, Hartwick
Brett Trichilo, Wilkes
Brett Trichilo, Wilkes

Note the hometown/backyard pick two years in a row!

Actually it's 2002-2004 that don't appear readily, but 2002 is burried a few clicks deep.  From the top level you just get the 2001 winner when you click on 2002, but then if you keep clicking, you do get 2002.

They obviously messed up the award, but it is a slap in the face of the individuals who were picked to wipe out any record of having given out the award for those years; I'm sure they were good football players.

Looks like te Melberger is at least given out to someone again.  They had the right winner and runners up last year (in my opinion).  It looks like the banquet, etc is gone, but is this a legit award again?

"All four"? Since when did we start counting 120-pound runners and dudes with hair down to their shoulders ahead of girls in spandex? Or doesn't johnniepress think volleyball is a sport? I'll agree with dance team, but I have to draw the line somewhere...

SJU doesn't compete in any girls sports.  No one one here said girls in spandex is a bad idea, there just isn't an SJU varsity VB team.

Knights,

I didn't think the defense was too bad, and they did hit hard.  The punter was about as good as I have seen this year.  I saw the placekicker kick one from 50 in warm ups (with the wind, but I wish we had someone who could kick one from 40 with the wind).

I thought he should have taken it himself on that boot.  Why risk a pass on 4th and 1 when they are giving him that one yard, so I didn't think it was all that smart.  I also didn't like that we took a timeout with 11 seconds left before that play.  Everyone knew it should be the last play of the half, why call it with 11 seconds left?  We had to kick off then!

Esq,

I have my concerns about Alex also.  I especially echo your concerns about the fact that Alex has kept the ball on the option roughly two times this year.  One of these times someone is going to step in and intercept that pitch, as has almost been the case multiple times already.

I am not sure if you are trying to say that Alex shouldn't have called that timeout or not, but if so, he didn't call it.  I am almost certain it was the guy on the cover of program who frantically called timeout too early.

I was about ready to give up on this board because you have to filter through 12 pages to find 5 posts that are actually about football.  The last few pages have been mostly about football; how refreshing.

What an accomplishment by Porta.  He got his name mentioned on the WCCO 6 pm news for scoring a big touchdown, but I don't remember anything said about the record.  I was listening while making supper, so I could have missed a quick statement.

Could be a couple of tough weeks coming up for the Johnnies.  I hope SJU doesn't start as slowly next week as they did this afternoon.  I also hope Porta has more trouble finding daylight three weeks from now than he did today.

How did Hamline beat Carleton?  Having seen both teams, it seems nearly impossible.

Jansen got hurt last year against St Olaf and that was why Sauer played.  Jansen was scheduled to be the starter for this season with Sauer as the backup and the future QB, since he is only a soph.   He throws a real nice intermediate and deep ball, but isn't quite the running threat Jansen is.  Will see what UST does Sat against Augsburg.

Thanks!

UST put their regular starting QB Ryan Jansen at TE and started the Sauer kid, who did a nice job.  Jansen is such a good athlete and is strong enough to play TE.  Evidently coaches are trying to put the best athletes on the field, which makes sense.

I know Sauer started some games for UST last year.  Was Jansen hurt last year, or did Jansen beat out Sauer at the beginning of this year?

Let's hear more about this beverage shortage.  Like they ran out of soda and water?  I've never been to St. Olaf but that is downright busch league.  Money?  Who needs money?

Yes, water, soda, everything.  I know they were out with 12 minutes left in the second quarter, and heard that they were out before then.  I did see some people coming down the hill at half time with cases of various liquids when I was on my way to get some water from my car.

It had nothing to do with the Johnnies traveling well either.  At that pace, by half time they would not have had enough for their homecoming crowd without any SJU fans.

I generally agree with having AQ's because it gives the weaker conferences something to shoot for and possibliy improve (look at the SCIAC and how they would have 10-0 teams stay home and now they have had as least some playoff success).

Anyway, the DII model actually isn't too bad.  They take the top 6 teams from each region except if a team from a conference that doesn't have a team in the top 6 finishes at least 10th in the rankings, that conference gets a bid.

In other words, if we would have a regional top 15 instead of 10 or something and take the top 8 unless a conference has a team 9-12 and no team in the top 8.  Obviously there are down sides to this too, but a 7-3 conference champ probably won't get in that way, unless they played a killer schedule.
