ECAC Bowl Games Saturday, Nov. 23:

Alfred Saxons (7-3) will travel to Danbury, CT to take on Western Connecticut (8-2) in Asa S. Bushnell Bowl Game.

Brockport (7-3) will host Rochester (6-4) in Clayton Chapman Bowl.

Morrisville Mustangs (6-4) will host Stevenson Mustangs (5-5) in Robert M. "Scotty" Whitelaw Bowl.

Empire 8 in THREE bowl games. Not bad.

Quote from: Bartman on November 16, 2024, 04:39:33 PMBig congrats to the Saxon Warriors on your triumph over Brockport . You showed you were a tough team in Week One at Hobart. I'm sure you made Pep's day.

...Indeed it did...but congrats also to Hobart. Good luck in the NCAAs! Pep didn't really know what to expect after that first game in Geneva. Were Saxons better or Hobart just not as good? Turned out BOTH teams played well enough to win and have both gotten better as the season progressed.

It was special for the seniors on the team who had never beaten Brockport.

Will be rooting for the Statesmen in NCAA play! Saxons likely to get an ECAC bowl...maybe host Rochester? Wouldn't that be fun?

Quote from: Bartman on November 03, 2024, 07:58:05 PMHobart beats RPI, wins the Liberty League and gets one less vote in the D3Football poll , RPI fans should be insulted, I thought beating RPI was more impressive than that ;D

Congrats to the Statesmen! And to think had it not been for that Hobart punt taking a cursed bounce and touching a Saxon...AU might be a (very respectable) 6-2. And, had the Saxons gotten off the bus at Pep's alma mater, perhaps at 7-1 (but still way behind dem Dragons). Coulda, shoulda, woulda...but Pep is happy the band is becoming quite proficient playing the fight song this year!

Quote from: IC798891 on November 03, 2024, 07:01:08 PMThey're 3-5, and the 6th place team in the conference. Brockport is going to get washed by Cortland

As good as Brockport's defense may be, Cortland's offense is at another level altogether. Pep doubts that Brockport's offense, while improved this year, can keep up. Heck, AU, which this year has made a habit of letting teams back in due to muffed punts, blocked punts and pick sixes, to Pep's surprise, scored 38 at Utica.

'Not Even D2' YouTube podcast ....Cortland coach C. Fitzpatrick for nearly 90 minutes. Done couple of weeks back

KJ Allison of "Not Even D2" does the color commentary for the Alfred University football webcast...Kenny is a guard on the Alfred University basketball team that opens its season with an exhibition game at St. Bonaventure Oct. 30.

Neruda Perdomo of "Not Even D2" is a guard on the Utica basketball team, which opens its season against Lehman College at RIT's Harold J. Brodie Tournament Nov. 8-9.

Quote from: XREDDRAGON77 on October 12, 2024, 05:37:25 PMIf the Dragons didn't muff an early punt return (Cortland's returner that's been electrifying the last season and a half), we probably would have goose egged the pioneers! I don't thought Utica would have moved the ball a little more efficiently! Regardless, I like how Cortlands Defense has been playing! It's been a fun ride so far in 24!

Look forward to seeing the defending national champs in "The Pit" on Saterday.... The Red Dragons are the real deal. Hoping my Saxons can pick themselves up to give the Dragons a game!

No marching thus far for the Alfred University Pep Band. However, the young musicians have mastered a medley of four tunes...Don't Fear the Reaper, Low Rider, Drive My Car and Oya Como Va...that all feature...the cowbell.

While it's a "Concert Band" piece, its debut on Saturday in the Saxons' 45-15 win over the guru's alma mater, played with music stands in the stands, was well received. The only complaint to date is that the AU Pep Band could use... MORE COWBELL!!

Never mind the fact that only four of the Empire 8 teams were in action on Saterday, Sept. 28, and the three others lost their games, the SAXONS swept the E8 football honors for the week!!

FOOTBALL
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Alexander Coffey, Alfred, Jr., TE, Columbia, MD/Long Beach
Coffey was an all-around standout for the Saxons in their 45-15 win over visiting Catholic University on Saturday, scoring three total touchdowns. Coffey was the go-to option on short yardage plays, subbing in as a wildcat quarterback, rushing five times for 18 yards as he totaled two rushing touchdowns. He was also targeted once for a 37-yard touchdown catch, Alfred's longest passing play of the day. Coffey added one assisted tackle on a kickoff.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Adam Mietz, Alfred, Sr., DB, Akron, NY/Akron
Mietz intercepted two passes and added four tackles, helping lead Alfred to a 45-15 win over Catholic University on Saturday. His first interception came at a crucial time, jumping in front of a screen pass late in the first quarter, causing the first turnover of the game with a two-yard interception return. Mietz's second interception was an 80-yard pick-six for a touchdown as he opened the scoring floodgates in the third quarter, giving the Saxons a 17-3 edge.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Dion Anderson, Alfred, So., WR/KR, Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate Institution
Anderson returned a kick 95 yards for a touchdown in Alfred's 45-15 win over Catholic University during Homecoming Weekend Saturday. After Catholic scored to make it 24-9 in the third quarter, Anderson quelled the visitors' momentum with a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown to make it 31-9 Saxons. He totaled 153 yards on three kick returns while adding five receptions for 26 yards. He was previously the E8 Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 16.

And, thanks to Pat Coleman for the shout out with his alma mater playing at Alfred...and the D3football.com honors for Alex Coffey, AU junior tight end, who scored three TDs for AU.

TE Alex Coffey, Jr., Alfred
Coffey was an all-around menace for the Saxons in their 45-15 win over visiting Catholic. The transfer junior was the go-to option on short yardage plays, subbing in to take direct snaps, rushing five times for 18 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He was targeted once for a 37-yard touchdown catch and it was the longest passing play of the day.

Quote from: Bartman on September 16, 2024, 04:57:53 PMBartman's LL Reshuffle after Week 2

1. Ithaca....0-2,Defense looks very good, Offense needs A.J.
2. Hobart....1-1, Defense high quality, Offense improved slightly last week outgaining R-M
RPI.......1-1, Could be well balanced but need to see more this week against WPI
4. RachaCha..2-0, about to go 3-0 this weekend against Salve Regina
Union.....1-1, Chargers really struggled against SUNY Marine, Springfield gonna feast
6. SLU ......1-1, Nice win against Cadets, but crushed by Gulls, tough WNE match up
7. Buff ST.  1-1, Crushed Dilbert, DO NOT look past the Bisons this year

BengalsRule may take offense to his Buffalo State Bengals being called Bisons, but while on the topic of Bisons, a fun fact...the University of Buffalo teams were originally called Bisons and had very little success against the Alfred Saxons before Alex Yunevich arriving. Bisons and Saxons were the Hilberts and Maine Maritimes a century ago...at the bottom of the heap. In 1927, the "Scoreless Wonders" of Alfred University and the Bisons bumbled to a 0-0 tie. To negate confusion with Buffalo's pro baseball team, UB later switched up to "Bulls" and became bullish, turning the football program around and becoming a nemesis to Yunie's boys, twice denying the Saxons an undefeated skein.

Dang...Pep's age is beginning to show...recalling football games nearly a century ago!

Alfred University Pep Band, coming off its annual Band Camp last Saturday, will be making some noise in the stands at Yunevich Stadium tomorrow, with nine first-year instrumentalists and six or seven veterans.

Pep is particularly pleased with the enthusiasm among the freshmen in the band. Perhaps we can pull off another half-time show this season...with some more work!

Bartman: Statesmen put up a fight in 1970 at Merrill Field, but fell, 31-22. Wasn't A-Z on that team? Remember AU had the pumpkinheads pinned back at their own 3 yard line, and A-Z broke through the line and went 97 yards for the TD!

You really think Hobart won't beat Alfred, a team they've handled easily in their last five meetings?

Reading that the "frat house" is gone at Union...reminds me of when the green cedar shingled fieldhouse that sat just beyond the north endzone was removed from Merrill Field.

But still alive are the memories...when at halftime of the 1964 Susquehanna game, with the Saxons trailing just 8-6, a large group of students formed a funnel from the fieldhouse to the sideline and cheered on the boys as they entered for the second half of that 18-16 win in the "Miracle at Merrill"....and when my Morrisville roommate and I walked out onto the 50-yard-line (to show him the perfect natural turf) and were abruptly interrupted by a bear of a man who emerged from said fieldhouse and yelled, "Get the hell off the field!"

Cherish the memories!

Congrats to Curt FitzPatrick, Zac Boyes and all of the Red Dragons! Amazing game! A stark contrast between the first and second halves.
You've made all of New York...and the East Region proud!
