Wartburg 24-14 over Dubuque

Really bizarre game, when you consider all the sloppy play in the first half (penalties and turnovers) juxtaposed against a scoreless second half. But sometimes you're going to have one like that. Knights took care of business and will lift a trophy if they do the same next week.

Wartburg tailgate set up just outside the stadium if anyone wants to come by! https://x.com/jessegavin1/status/1855272122374897818?s=46&t=EZ8tfztoO0_nVyh3500AZQ

Does anyone know what the reasons are behind the hatred between UD and Loras?

Where do I begin  ;D

Proximity...1 mile between the two campuses.

Religion...Loras is Catholic, UD Presbyterian.

A little over a century ago, UD was known as Dubuque College and Loras was St Joseph.  St Joseph changed their name to Dubuque College and would sit on mail that was supposed to have been delivered to UD.  The Iowa Supreme court eventually told both schools to change their names.  St Joseph, which was calling itself Dubuque College, changed their name to Columbia College before eventually settling on the Loras College name in 1939.  Dubuque College changed their name to the University of Dubuque.  That was not taken well by Loras College.  After that, the two schools would not play each other in football.  When the Iowa Conference split into North/South divisions in 1950 Dubuque was put in the South and Loras was put in the North division.

Yada, yada, yada, the list goes on and on.

This history is suddenly very relevant again.

Tune into KRLS FM 92.1 every Saturday afternoon at 1:00 for Central College football brought to you by the Voice-of-the-Dutch Trevor Castle. Starting this Saturday and a total of 12 Saturdays. Time to relive classic Central football games from 2001 on. With 12 games on the schedule, it looks like a winning season!

Glancing over the schedule, it appears there are a couple chances that I make my return to the Big Red Radio waves.

Who saw that coming?

Congratulations to Luther on equaling their 2018 win total during a recent trip to Spain.

I haven't had any luck finding links to the old newspaper stories, but around 20 years or so ago the IIAC was discussing dropping Dubuque, Upper Iowa, and William Penn for not being athletically competitive.  I remember reading that William Penn was already planning the move to the NAIA and was stating that even with athletic scholarships that move would reduce costs for them.  Dubuque was quoted in the article saying they were exploring all options for their athletics but it was their wish to stay in the IIAC.

There wasn't too much of an uproar back then over the situation.  Maybe someone out there can have better luck digging up those old newspaper stories.

That would have been back in the era when UDubuque was in danger of closing up shop completely.

I've often wondered with Clarke and Loras within eyesight of each other, and both Catholic schools, if we might see a merger of the two schools sometime in the future.

If that move we're going to be made, it would have happened 40 years ago. Clarke and Loras were brother/sister institutions before either was co-ed. Women went to Clarke, men to Loras. I'm not sure when Clarke went co-ed, but I know Clarke was still all-female until 1980 or so.

I think it would be a fool's errand to try to talk any NAIA institution into giving up that designation to join D3. Once you can offer athletic scholarships, why would you ever go back to not being able to do so?

Long time, long time.

The St. Thomas discussion (even if it kind of reads like 5WOL is having an internal argument) is a relevant one. On the heels of Iowa Wesleyan's closure, I'm hearing that a pair of ARC schools are also in some perilous financial straits.

Perusing the site ahead of the playoff bracket reveal. I see the pre-postseason Top 25 posted. Central still receiving one vote.

WHAT?!?!?

Sorry if this has been covered recently, but what's the tailgating situation at Oshkosh? There's a crew of former Wartburg players and myself considering a trip up, and we consider this to be vital information. Judging by Google Maps, there isn't a lot of designated parking around the stadium, save for the lots surrounding Associated Bank and north of the Zion Lutheran Church. There also appears to be a small, unpaved lot beyond the baseball field's left field fence which, if open, would be a short walk to the visitors' side of the stadium.

Loras has found themselves an offense. The Duhawk defense is a mess, but they have themselves a heck of an offense.

That'll happen when you hire a Wartburg alum to be your Offensive Coordinator.

Trivia Question I though of while watching tonight's UWW-Morningside game: When is the last time Whitewater lost to an Iowa-based school? I'm sure it's been a long time, but I'm not sure exactly how long.
