Quote from: pastprime on March 16, 2006, 07:51:31 PMYes I have heard in the border war, and back in the early to mid 90's LaCrosse and Riverfalls used to give the MN D2 schools their money worth. The reason they aren't played anymore goes to Winona. When they went and played the University of North Dakota and saw the facilities and what it took to be a national power in D2. From them on they stepped up funding (their stadium now boasts a skybox which is sold out for the next 4 seasons, as well as stadium seating for the fans) and recruited higher caliber players. They now schedule 1AA and D2 teams only. It made no sense for them to play a D3 school because even if they did win, it hurt their SOS, which is huge in determining who makes the national playoffs.Quote from: 5wide on March 09, 2006, 01:25:45 PMI have replied to this post 3 time now. I don't know why they don't show up but I will try again.
I went to Winona and won a few championships there. There dominate their conference winning it five out of the last six years. I can attest that none of the WI D3 schools are remotely close to competiting with Winona. Maybe they could compete with some of the bottom schools from that conf, but they would get spanked by the top 4 each year.
5wide, have you ever heard of the Boarder War? If I recall, the WIAC was 9-7 against those mighty D-II schools that you speak so highly of. And if I remember, Winona St. was 0-2 in those games. Care to give an explaination as to why they lost both games? Also, who felt it in their best interest to not participate anymore in those games? I'll give you a hint, it wasn't the WIAC.
At this point, none of the UW schools could touch Winona, Concordia SP or Bemidji, the top 3 in the NSIC. Winona is stacked with top level D2 players and has many players who received D1 scholarships transfer in.
