FWIW:  The above mentioned DePauw grad was so upset over the reply she got to her letter to the president of the school she has vowed never to give them another cent, and has steered several potential students away.

I believe I've met the woman in question. With her permission, I'd like to post this photo of her.

We're a long way from 2006. If you aren't over it by now, I really and truly feel sorry for you.

Five Burning Questions Before the Bell Game:

5: Did HDNet hire a play-by-play guy who will know what the hell is happening in the game? I don't know which color guy it was last year, but one of them kept having to correct the play-by-play guy in a sotto voice - "He dropped it," "They got the first down," and so on. That was the funniest part of last year's game that didn't involve Matt Hudson crying on the bench.

4. Will Matt Hudson's almost psychic connection with Steve Valdiserri be affected in any way when Hudson is eventually told that Valdiserri isn't on his team?

3. Will Spud Dick go down in history as the best Monon Bell QB in history, as well as the most hated... oh, who am I kidding, ONLY hated Dick in the history of the Wabash campus?*

(*: Low hanging fruit, I know. He graduates this year. We'll have to be more clever next year. I realize all of this.)

2: At what time of the game will Wabash fans bolt for the parking lot this year?

1: DePauw's the superior team on both sides of the ball. That's not a question, that's reality.

DPU 31, Wabash 14.

DING.

DONG.

DING.

DONG.

The bell tolls for thee. See you tomorrow.

Dear Mr. Hudson,

25-43-262-0-4

That's not "Peyton Manning against Florida". That's "Jake Delhomme in a playoff game." Get over yourself.

Is the DePauw loss an upset, or am I underselling Illinois Wesleyan?

Ill Wesleyan is #10 in the preaseason poll and from what I've seen from them the past few years when OU has played them they are a very talented team.  I would have expected DPU to be the favorite, but this seems to be a mild upset... but not too shocking.

It should be noted that Jenna Fernandez didn't play this weekend for the Tigers, so DPU was at less than full strength.

Of course, the Fernandez injury gives some other post players a chance for some PT, and freshman Katie Aldrich took advantage in DPU's win over Central - 20 points in 20 minutes! Looks like the Tigers will once again have the depth that's really been their hallmark over the last 5-6 seasons.

DPU opens up tonight at Boys Town in Crawfordsville against a perenially tough Franklin squad in a tournament that could set up an extra DPU-Wabash meeting this year.

I haven't the slightest idea what we'll see from DPU in the frontcourt tonight. David Gray and Joe Bergfeld return. Eric Hagen is back from a scary condition that required heart surgery last year and at 6'8" he's the tallest Tiger, though he lost some development time last year. Personally I think Ryan Sever has a chance to shine if he gets some minutes - his only minutes last year were late in blowouts but he always looked like the best player on the 'third team', as it were.

The backcourt looks solid - Mike Moore is back, of course, along with Tom Callen. Matt Bennett is a transfer who walked on and saw time at Valpo the last two seasons, so I'm guessing he could see some time. Not sure who the third guard starter will be - could be Bennett or Steve LeMasters if the Tigers don't decide to sacrifice size for speed by starting Moore and Tony James in the same backcourt (I always liked that alignment myself, though James is a really good fit coming off the bench). Ryan Russell should get some burn too. No idea about any of the frosh, so I'll be learning about them at the same speed as the rest of you.

Go Tigers.

DPU will be tested right out of the gate in the always-tough WashU-IWU-DPU Rotating Tournament of Doom (it's in St. Louis this year). Tigers open with IWU tonight.

Pruzin, Fernandez, Marshall all back - there are two of your top three scorers and top three rebounders from last year. Katie Mathews shouldn't have any trouble filling Gretchen Haehl's shoes at the point - she's got the best mid-range jumper in the conference.

Have to say I kinda liked seeing the Tigers picked to finish second... Coach Huffman's teams thrive on anything that can possibly be percieved as doubt in their abilities. If I know anything about these Tigers it's that they love proving people wrong.

Will be tough out of the gate though - definately keep an eye on whoever enters that guard rotation behind Mathews-Pruzin. Brianna Frigerio was the only other returning player to get significant PT at guard last year, but there look to be some really good freshman guards.

Oh well, still have the Bell.  Good enough for me.

This year, OK.

Next year, even if you win the Bell game, missing the playoffs again cannot be good enough.  Expectations in Greencastle next year should be a conference championship and a playoff run.  With all you have returning, anything short should be considered a disappointment, especially if the Millsaps and Trinity games are at home (which they should be, right?).

Cosign. The schedule aligns just about perfectly.  Gonna have to find some new bodies in the trenches next year, but man, is there ever a lot of young talent on the defense. 8-2 ain't gonna cut it next year.

I just couldn't understand why he played so poorly.  This is one of the best offenses in the country, and it was all but dominated by the DePauw defense.  You're talking about one of the 5 most efficient QB's in the country, and he was just terrible today.  Telegraphing throws, missing throws, the whole thing.  Wasn't just the defense, either.  None of his throws were on target.  Even his completions weren't all that accurate.

Well, I'll offer he just didn't know what the hell he was lookin' at. The only other team he's seen that's rolled their coverage that extensively has been Witt and he threw three picks in that game.

By comparison, I thought Spud was awesome. Great mechanics, timing, the works. I was really impressed.

In regards to Spud... I don't think he was sacked but once today (though there was that fumble forced which almost looked like a forward pass deflected - definitely would have gone to review in the NFL). Even though Wabash was getting off the line quickly, they weren't pressuring Spud, and even when they did get in the backfield Spud didn't get rattled, instead simply rolling out and making good throws. Spud's poise is what most impressed me today.

That's two years in a row that DPU has really dominated the trenches, which has led to a T.O.P. landslide and a victory.

Hope you guys are full strength for the playoffs - I head Graham's concussion might be serious which would really be an unfortunate blow for WC. Kimp I believe was injured as well. Hope they can both go next week.

Finally, my final word on the whole 'schedule' argument - say what you will about the comparative strength of the two conferences, but I think DPU playing Trinity and Millsaps really prepares them well for Wabash's size and athleticism. I don't think WC has an opponent that similarly prepares them for DPU.

I'd give karma if I could, Wally - you're a classy poster and I always enjoy reading your insights. At least you have the chance to find some redemption next week, so enjoy getting to have at least one more game.

And I will laugh and laugh and laugh...

Even the goldest-colored glasses wouldn't have shown me a game like this. The second half was a victory lap.

DePauw Never Quits... unless they get a 30-0 lead and the outcome isn't in doubt in the second half, in which case they do gear it back a bit. ;D

WHOO!

Good luck in the playoffs, Wallies - looks like you're going to need it...

Any body know if the game is being broadcast on Dish Network and on which channel?

HDNet, channel 362. Although I think that's only part of a certain HD programming package so if you don't have that, you're outta luck, I think.

At home in Greencastle if we are not in the game everyone leaves ...

DePauw Never Quits!

???

Yeah, I wince a little when I see stuff like that internet poll. But actually that's one of the many pleasures I do take from DPU winning the Bell - it completely robs your lives as Wallies of all but the scarcest meaning, while win or lose, we Tigers still know we attended a superior academic institution and enjoyed a superior college experience.

Now are there going to be any predictions about this game or what? I think my DPU 28, WC 21 might have been 'closest to the pin' last year.

BYRON P HOLLETT STADIUM WILL BE A MORGUE IF:
-Spud Dick completes 60% or better of his passes.
-DePauw wins T.O.P. by a sizeable margin.
-The apparent maturity of the secondary since the Trinity game is no mirage.
-Wabash completes no offensive plays over 30 yards (the deep pass has been a part of seemingly every single Wabash scoring drive in the last two Bell games).

OH WELL, WE'LL STILL BEAT YOUR ASSES IN BASEBALL IF:
-Wabash runs for over 150 yards as a team.
-Wabash proves to be the more physical bunch in the trenches.
-DePauw's occasional (and inexplicable) turnover woes come back to haunt them.
-Juan Joseph is traded to the LG's for a player to be named later.
-Wabash leads by at least 10 at the halftime break.

And in the spirit of my prediction last year - three more hyper-specific predictions:
BOLD: The weather turns this one into a muddy, snowy slugfest.
BOLDER: Dick - 23-30, 206, 2 TD, 1 INT.
BOLDEST: Though it won't come in dramatic fashion, a Havercamp FG will be the difference... again. And I will laugh and laugh and laugh...

FINAL SCORE: DPU 17, WC 14

I'm sure I'll be back around to defend myself, but in the meantime, I'll say this now: here's to another well-played, hotly contested game that reminds all of us why we love football and our alma maters so damned much. Safe travels to everyone who will be attending - I'd give anything to be among you.

I find the notion that any one team will be more fired up than the other for the FREAKING MONON BELL to be patently absurd.

And smed, you're right - that was exactly what happened last season, and even though DPU will be much more pass-heavy than last year, if you aren't knocking Dick in the dirt, he's going to have a big day. And as has already been stated, the Tiger passing attack almost functions like a running game in that they'll take the 4-5 yard gains and chew up clock on their way down the field.
