Hey, all you Raiders!

Had a great day Saturday at the old Alma Mater. I attended the dedication of the Dom and Karen Capers Football Center and the renaming of the stadium to Kehres Stadium.

If you haven't been in the new building, take a look. My reaction was "Wow". Picture a conference room that will hold the entire team with 4 huge screens. Offices for the various coaches. Walls covered with giant size pictures of former players. And the trophys!
You can't walk thru this place without realizing the tremendous accomplishments of the football program and the emphasis placed on it.
I just live about 5 blocks from the campus, so I can see it anytime. But, if you are in the area, for a game or otherwise, take a peek. You won't be disappointed!

What a thrill to look at the scoreboard and see, "WELCOME TO KEHRES STADIUM". And there will be a plaza in front of the stadium honoring Larry and Linda.
Coach Kehres deserves all the honors he has received. I put his name right up there with Orville Nelson Hartshorn, founder of our beloved school back in 1846.

It was truly a great day. Go Raiders!

First of all, is anyone out there? If not, disregard the following. Otherwise, read on!

Not football but baseball.
Marietta, to no ones surprise, has made the Super Regionals. Baldwin-Wallace, to the surprise of, perhaps, some, has also qualified for the Super Regionals.
This means we're down to the top 16 teams in the country.
Hooray for our two OAC teams. Best of luck to them both as they play on. Great showing for the conference.

(It's not easy rooting for BW but, in this case, I'll make an exception). 

It seems it's that time of year when we debate the old question: "Should a team score all it can or should they back off and stop scoring"?
Let me discuss my perspective on that.

For many years, I worked on the football media guide (remember when it was printed?). I was responsible for stats and records, of course, under the direction of the Sports Information Director. Great job and lots of fun.

After many years of doing the above, I decided to wander away a bit and react to a subject that kept coming up. Is it better to score all you can or, in the name of good sportsmanship, should you back off?

To that end, I phoned 33 D3 coaches around the country. This was a mix of head coaches and assistant coaches. Maybe not exactly scientific but, I think, a reasonable effort.
I asked them if they thought a team should stop scoring, kick field goals, intentionally run out of bounds, take a knee, and the like.
Surprise, or maybe not, 30 coaches said it was a slap in the face. The message they got was that nothing they can do will stop you from scoring TDs, no matter who you have playing. Only 3 coaches thought it a sign of good sportsmanship.

How do you tell your backups not to score? These players represent the future varsity. Let them play. I remember some years back when a senior, playing one of his few times, was running to the end zone. No one was in front of him. He ran out of bounds inside the 10 yard line - as he was instructed to do. Hardly fair to the player.

Of course this discussion assumes certain conditions.
   1. The starters produce a big score by halftime.
   2. The second string starts the second half (what's the point of having the starters run one series?)
   3. If the second string is scoring at will, put in the third string - whatever that is.
   4. If that group still scores, put in the cheerleaders, trainers or whoever else you want. (I would be willing to run a series, if I can be QB!)

The bottom line, at least according to 30 of these coaches, is it's their job to stop you. If they can't, you'll put up a big score. It is not the job of your team to stop itself.

So there. Part survey results and part of my own thinking. Do with it what you will.

I have seen Chuck Moore take a knee on a kickoff return. I have seen top receivers make the catch and run out of bounds. I have watched linemen go off their blocks so a running back can be stopped.

Play the game! (OK, maybe if you hit 100 points you do something. Or do you?)

That was the freshman year of my 7 year undergraduate experience. As such, I was shielded, pretty much, from certain goings-on. I did hear some talk from some of the older guys, many of whom were back from "the war to end all wars" and "the war to make the world safe for democracy". So, therefore, I can't really answer your question. I just don't know!

Wait a minute.I never said anything about "tar and feathers". My exact quote was,"Now coaching? That area needs some work". I think that"s certainly true. And it goes beyond the head coach as well!.

Just my limited knowledge opinion

How can you take away a championship from a team that won it on the field? Maybe something should be taken away from the coach.
As far as I'm concerned, at least in my own little world, UMHB has three (3) national championships!
But, as always, I defer to the experts (Pat, et al) on the reality of the situation.

Still having a little trouble with this "hockey thing".
If it's that cold, wouldn't it be "Frozen Five"? Why not all the toes instead of just four?
Maybe you don't count the BIG toe. Kinda like the foot's counterpart to the thumb. Many people don't think of the thumb as a finger.
That could be..........! Oh, never mind.

Thanks for your insight on the visual complexities of the hockey puck.
I live in Alliance, Ohio. I live alone. I'm old. That's 3 strikes against me on knowing "stuff". Your info will afford me a better understanding of "hockey".
I feel that now I can converse with people from Minnesota on this topic.

Hockey fans

Lots of talk about hockey on this board. I live in Alliance, Ohio and therefore did not know what it was. Our major sport here is league bowling on Mondays and Thursdays.
A while back, I got a response from some of you. I want to, at this time, thank you for your comments.
Sagatagsam gave me directions to a place in Pittsburgh where this is played. 57Johnnie informed me that hockey is like polo on ice without the horses. Both very helpful. I'm sorry I incurred the wrath of that Oz guy in Australia. Did not mean to do that!
Anyhoo, thank you so much for the enlightenment. This is my favorite board so I just want to know what's going on!

Oh. One more thing. What's a "puck"?

It's going to take more than a few good recruiting classes for Mount to get back to championship form.
And players must get that "fire" that past Raiders teams have had. Haven't seen much of it recently!
Some coaching adjustments should also be in order. "Being in the Kehres family" is not being a Kehres!
Just some thoughts from an alumnus who has watched more than a few games.
Might not have the in-depth knowledge of many of you, but, hey, I bleed purple too.
