I agree. Who cares about a UPS-Menlo game. But one last thing about what Hatchetman said about the UPS-PLU games in '01 and '02. I was on the UPS teams during those two years when we played PLU. Our team dealt with a lot of tough blowouts and such. But what PLU did in '02 made me lose a lot of respect of their coaching staff. I still have a tremendous amount of respect for their program, their fans, and their players, but that game made me sick. Not only did they have offensive guys playing defense and defensive guys play offense, but they were driving to score with under a minute left and called a timeout. I mean the game was about 42-0, and they put the game away in the first quarter, jumping out to a 28 or 35 to nothing lead. That was much worse than any game where teams had their starters in during the fourth quarter in a blowout against us.

penn-
I also played in that 02' game as a senior and I can understand your frustration with certain things in that game.  However, I would like to point out that the score at the end of the first quarter was 35-0 and the final score was 42-0 so I wouldn't say that we tried to light up the scoreboard.  Our starters on only played the first quarter and a couple of series in the third quarter.  The offensive players that played on D were only the seniors, we had 11 seniors and we planned a senior series on both sides of the ball.  The time out was bush league and everyone knew it, that is why a knee was taken after that time out.  I think it was a player that called the timeout.

We never really recruited Kickers so I think the coaches always felt we had a better chance to get the first down, than to kick the field goal.  When we finally did attempt one, it was because we had a solid kicker and some of our offensive starters were hurt...

if i remember correctly plu went a number of seasons without a FG attempt. they just saw everything as 4 down territory. guttsy, plu-ish and it seemd to have worked, they took the crown in 1999 i think? some of the lutes may know the details.

go cats

We didn't attempt a field goal from 99'-01'.  I think there were only 2 attempts in 98'.  The first attempt in 01' was against Linfield and was successful.  Coincidently, that was the last triumph over the Wildcats.

Welcome Braksy 20!  Always glad to see new posters from other NWC schools.

As an alum of a Big-10 school and a Pac-10 school (but a much more serious Linfield fan), I'm not sure I've seen a more intense conference rivalry over the last 36 years than Linfield-PLU. Nor have I seen games with so much pride of achievement riding on them year after year. While there have been many hard-fought games and heart-stopping finishes over the years, IMO it has been a quality rivalry based on joint respect between two class programs.

The selfish part of me hopes never to see PLU highly competitive again...but in my heart, my respect for your program's history causes me to recognize that it is better for Linfield, the NWC, and D-3 football to have PLU re-build the high quality program we saw for many years.

Here's to a resurgence of Lute football...except on Wildcat Weekends!!

OldCatProf-
Great post!  Having strong teams in the NWC year in and year out is what makes the NWC so much fun to be apart of.  I loved being apart of the NWC when there were three great teams in PLU, Linfield, and Willamete and it was a race to the finish.  I believe the Lutes will be there again in the near future and especially on Wildcat Weekends!!!  :)

Sorry to post so late on the Linfield-PLU game, just got back home.  Linfield looked pretty good on Saturday and the Lute offense did not.  Seven turnovers...no one can turn the ball over seven times against a quality team like Linfield and win.  I thought the Lute D played pretty well considering they had their backs against the wall most of the game.  15 points off of field goals, that kicker did a great job.  The Lutes have had a couple of "down years" but it looks like they have a lot of young guys playing.  Five in a row hurts the ego a little bit, but we'll be back.

Of course the lutes have to hold onto the ball, but D is correct- there are more than a few keys to this game. I think the lutes ability to get some three and outs is critical. Scherer may be too much for them....

Game 6 tonight- one win from the world series. Who would have thought it? Carpenter needs to get it done tonight though- no game 7 in NY for the cards.

I think the Lute D will get some three and outs, the D seems to be playing well this season.  I agree there are more than a few keys to this game, however, if we don't hold onto the ball, the other keys won't make much of a difference.

D-Yes the other game in Tacoma-(P.rider)...Are you staying in Ashton the whole week?  The Lutes are definately a better team, talent wise, than their record shows.  It's tough to win games with six and seven turnovers, unless you're da Bears.  Either way, should be a fun game to watch.  It will be my first time back since I left.

d-train, are you going to be at the game?

No, not this year. I'm flying out of state on Friday for a week. I'll catch the Lutes the next weekend at L&C and might crash a tailgate out your way on Nov. 4th.

D-Train,
Looks like we need some more Lutes on the board!  I'm always up for a couple of post on such a great rivalry week.  I was hoping you were going to make it this weekend.  The Swiss will be open on Friday night!  Should be a great game.  If the Lutes hang onto the ball, it will be a big win.  If they don't, we could be in trouble.   I'm hoping for trifecta upsets on Sat, Lutes/Vandals/P.R.
