In general, everything that was said about the Hornets' weekend in Wheaton was correct.  I do have a few other thoughts to add.  As a biased observer, I do have to disagree with Mr. Sager a little bit.  I felt like the Hornets outplayed Witt for 32 minutes of that game.  The middle 8 minutes of the first half was bad with missed layups, turnovers, and some poor defense.  Unfortunately for K, it is a 40 minute game and the (approx.) 21-2 run during the above span was too tough to overcome.  Further, Kellogg and McCain got 2 or 3 bad calls in the 2nd half, which only made the foul situation worse.
Offensively, the Hornets have some talent, but have not been able to work together as a cohesive unit.  They have a tendency to create good movement within their motion, but then stop the ball with excessive dribbling.  If they can improve upon their teamwork (screening for each other, setting up their man, passing the ball to the open man WHEN he is open), they will become better on offense.
Defensively, they have a tendency to play in spurts.  Sometimes, they are tenacious defenders.  They are helping in gaps, taking charges, in passing lanes, and rebounding very tough (for their size).  Other times, they seemed lost and lack intensity.  Some of that may be due to their depth.  The top 6 or 7 are playing a lot of minutes.  The younger guys will get better with experience and hopefully with more depth, we will see a defensive effort that is sustainable.
All in all, I felt so much better after Saturday's game.  You could even see some of the improvements made from Friday nights game.  If they continue to work together, they will improve and maybe win some games later in the year that they are not supposed to win.

Stinger, I always appreciate your insights on MI HS bball and the college scene in general.  Thanks for the motivation to return to the board.  My participation will be limited, as I do not live in Michigan anymore and seeing MIAA games becomes difficult.
PicknRoll, glad to see we have another Hornet follower.  I agree with the assessment that PicknRoll provided.  Clancy, Kellogg, McCain is a nice nucleus.  Hopefully, some of the others will step up.  If so, the Hornets could finish third through fifth.  Here is to eternal optimism...
To all, good luck this season.

Does anyone else realize how much of an advantage it is to have kids from Denver even consider your school?

Typical recruting areas by school:
Albion - Michigan
Adrian - Michigan and Northern Ohio
Alma - Michigan
Olivet - Michigan
Tri-State - Indiana and Michigan ??
Kalamazoo - Michigan and NW Indiana
Hope - Michigan (esp. West Michigan) and all Christian schools
Calvin - Michigan and ALL (Denver, North Dakota, Canada, etc.) Christian schools

I think the most important thing to remember is that kids from those Christian schools typically only consider 2 MIAA schools.  They may go to other Christian-based schools (Grace College, Anderson University, etc.).  As a former Assistant Coach at K and recruiter, it is very hard to get those kids to even consider it.  And when they do, they typically do not choose K.  This is a nice advantage for Hope and Calvin to have...

And do not get me whining on the minimum academic requirements at other schools...

Hey, these DePauw fans (adults and students) made Kzoo fans of years past look tame! ;)

I had to come over from the Men's Board at Cowboy J's request...

As an MIAA fan, it does happen (beyond Calvin), and when it does, the Game Administraors at ALL sites (Hope, Calvin, Adrian, Albion, Alma, and yes even Kalamazoo and Olivet) put it to an end.

I can go on and on about what Hope fans have done over the years that has crossed the line, but why?  Why would I bring up the fact that Hope Students have called K students "F#ggots?"  Why would I bring up the fact that after a heated Hope/K game, a Hope fan called a K Coach a "N!gger?"  Is it apalling, yes.  Is it isolated, yes.  Hope fans are not perfect, but burying the group because of the actions of 10% of the population is unnecessary.

I was not there, it sounds out of line.  But cut these people some slack...

At any rate, how 'bout we drop it now? It happened, it was out of hand compared with what we've grown accustomed to, and its over. If that's the way school's in "the real world" function, then fine. But those who take offense are allowed to let their feelings be known.

I do not want to quote everything that I hope to comment on...

Andy Phillips comes from a great family.  It is no surprise to me that he was willing to sacrifice for the team.  Taking nothing away from Brandon Crawford, he was a beast, if Andy had to play the role BC did, he could have put up huge numbers as well.  He is a classy individual, and though we always wondered what it would be like if he were in a K uniform (we give Brad plenty of grief), you have to congratulate him and the Dutch on a fine season.

GVW is a fine coach.  His record speaks for itself.  He must be a great recruiter to get the players he gets.  Having never been in a Hope lockerroom, I cannot picture him as a rah-rah fire 'em up kind of guy.  Further, I never got the impression he was good at in-game adjustments.  He seems to devise a gameplan and hopes his superior players will execute to win the game.  Most of the time, that strategy works...

I was not at the game and did not listen/watch, but it seemed that all of the Witt posters said this game would be in the 50s.  For Hope to win, they had to find a way to get it in the 60s or 70s.  They did not.  GVW supporters would say he did not shoot or pass the ball last night, however, a good coach would devise a gameplan to get his players good shots.  Was this the case?  Did Hope players have good, open looks and just not execute OR was this a poor gameplan causing them not to get good looks?  Just asking, I do not have the answer...

Again, Congrats to Hope on a fine season.  I can only hope for the day that the Hornets go 28-3 and advance to the Sweet 16...

We have always gotten screwed, ever since the Haklin era. ;D

So the question of the day: do the memories of Haklin cause the refs to dislike Kzoo to this day? or does the lack of Tazmanian Devil-esque ranting toward the referees by post-Haklin coaches leave Kzoo at a disadvantage for negotiating with the refs?

I was poking fun at myself and other Hornet supporters, but I do have a theory on this...The Haklin era produced teams that would play great defense.  With that defense came a style that was in your face, including intense ball pressure, passing lane pressure, and great help defense.  With that came the appearance that the Hornets would grab, hold, hand check, etc.  Referees became accustom to calling K games a certain way.  Even when the Hornets switched to the "Pack" defense (less pressure, but similar principles), referees continued calling games the same way.  Supporters of the Orange and Black were frustrated by this.

At times, referees will reward agression, other times they say it as a desparate attempt to hang around with superior talent, thus calling more fouls.  It just depends on the crew, the style of play, and GS is right, it is a part of the game.

To answer the question, I believe it has more to do with the style of play than the personality roaming the sidelines...but, rarely do refs cause a loss...
With the exception of every Hope game.  In fact, I think the 3 guys in stripes were responsible for the 100-35 whipping the Hornets took a few years back. :o

Since Calvin really only lost one close game I doubt that the majority of the 'the refs lost it for us' cries have been from Calvin fans.

Most of those cries came from us Hornet fans... :)

Calvin has a hockey team but deems football as too violent a sport.....brilliant.

I'm not sure what the reasons against football are today (startup expenses possibly). There was a day when the main obstacle to football at Calvin was an objection to its violence but that day is now a fading memory.

Does that mean they can start chanting, "KZOO HOCKEY!", when the K fans chant "CALVIN FOOTBALL?"

Anyways, good luck to both teams tonight.  I would like to see Andy Phillips and the Dutch prevail tonight and against the Knights (should they win).

Sorry, Meckes...

Tyler Worst is keeping K in this game...

The K Radio guys think Mecked should have been T'd for hanging on the rim?  Any thought from Calvin fans?

I blew it last night, I forgot to put my picks in, thus taking me out of the race...

Congrats to the Hornets for a hard fought win last night.  Thanks to those that have mentioned Rob Passage's coaching performance this year.  In my opinion, this is his best season as a coach.  Yes, his first year produced a better record, but he had a lot more talent.  This season he has had less talent, but he has found a formula for success, at least in the league.  The pre-season schedule was brutal, including only 1 home game against then-ranked Elmhurst.  The Hornets struggled early, but that tough schedule prepared them for the conference season.  Besides Herman and Konwinski, the Hornets have a young nucleus with Clancy, McCain, Kellogg, Worst, and others.  With another good recruiting class, the Hornets could fight their way back to the upper-echelon of the league.  Thats looking ahead, still work to do this season.  Coach P has done much better this season, probably because he got rid of those 2 bum assistant coaches he had last year...
