Drew hooked up with Moravian last night in an OT thriller! Moravian ultimately defended their home court but not before Drew gave them a real scare 84-82. Moravians bigs are a year bigger and better as Applegate, Hakelman and a frosh(#35) combined for 47 points and a ton of rebounds inside.

Drew was led by their outstanding guard trio of Kraft (21 pts), Cunningham (17 pts) and Marquis (17 pts, 8 assists). Drew also unveiled a Sophomore big (Methvin) who had a double/double (13 pts, 11 rebounds).

Both squads look like they will be a tough out for MAC conference opponents.

Hello all a Drew Fan checking in. From the early games it appears Drew is much improved over last season. New and improved coach who has them playing like a team with greater depth so the three top guards can play both ways without  tiring in the second half. Moreover we have a scoring threat in the low post! While it's very early Drew is 3-0 with wins over good teams in the form of Manhattaville, Elmira and one of next season's new Landmark Confrence foes Goucher College.

Congratulations to Drew's Melissa Kraft!!! The Junior guard from Staten Island poured in 35 points to reach the 1000 point milestone against FDU at home last evening. With Coutney Cunningham and Maggie Marquis penetrating and kicking out to the Arc, Melissa hit 9 three's. Big win for Drew as they up their conference record to 4 - 1 and put some space between themselves and FDU. Both Cunningham and Marquis finished with 14 points and 6 assists to complement Krafts record setting performance.

Next up for Drew is Wilkes in Wilkes Barre on Saturday.

Drew Woman played tough against a very good Muhlenberg squad last evening losing 67-61(6 lead changes in the last 6 minutes). A key issue developing for the Rangers is the play of their young big people. #35 a freshman is very athletic but raw, particularly on defense. #44 was injured and disappeared on offense while getting hammered defensively. The other front line player I am told was a soccer player who the coach recruited off campus because of low numbers( inexperienced but tough and determined)! The shame is that the team has three great guards in Cunningham( 13pts,2 assists), Kraft (13 pts, 4 assists)and Marquis (16 pts., 6 assists),  who have to play 36-39 minutes a night.

Drew will only go so far as the development of those big girls can take them. Defensively they are giving up way too many points in the paint against teams who have strong offensive players down low! i.e. Scranton, Moravian and Muhlenberg the teams 3 losses.

New Coach was a post player herself and I'm sure that the trio described above will grow with experience and her guidance. If they do not it will be a long season for the Rangers.

Scranton/Moravian = no contest in my humble opinion. Scranton too big, too athletic and too deep for Moravian to handle. BTW, the Moravian game last night against Drew was alot closer than the final score would indicate. Drew had no answers for Scranton in their game last Saturday and needs to improve alot to be competitive against Scranton at home. Moravian does possess two great players in Applegate and Hackleman. Unfortunately for Moravian, Scranton has about 10 great players and two superior D-3 players in  Melody and Matts without much drop off when they're on the bench!

I'll be watching this score to see if I still have an eye for scouting!! Good luck to all the girls.

Big Drew fan Here. A player who might earn the unsung hero award for the Rangers last season (when Cunningham was lost for the season yet Drew equaled its 2003-04 season record) and early this season is Maggie Marquis. Through the first four games,  Marquis is among the conference leaders in almost every offensive and defensive statistic. Further, with all due respect to Cunningham and Kraft, Marquis is the best defensive player and best conditioned athlete on the team. At 5'6" she is a great rebounder with good leaping ability and outstanding speed. The Drew back court may be the deepest in the conference this year with these three super guards averaging 35+ minutes a game. Not sure if our young but talented bigs are quite ready just yet to deal with Scranton in "the Valley", but look for Drew to be competitive in conference play this season. Drew played its worse game of the season last evening yet still handled a young DeSales squad quite easily at home.
