Quote from: Onward on, John Carroll on March 02, 2025, 11:28:06 AMA nice way to end our time in the OAC - winning the regular season title, winning the tournament title and knocking our rival out of the tournament while we did it.

I will miss the OAC. Loved our rivalries with Mount, BW  and Etta in hoops the last 10 years. Loved our battles with Capital in the 2000s. Love the coaches and road trips, campuses and fans.

To echo what was said above, Coach Fuline made lemonade with lemons, no doubt. He made the program relevant in the conference, then regionally, then nationally in rather quick order. He recruits well, he coaches well and he is an all-around nice guy on top of that. You were lucky to get him, you have been lucky to keep him and I hope he gets that title that he very much deserves.

And then there becomes "the silence of the lambs."

A bit late to the chat, and the game has already started...
Again, what Mount Union team shows up today? ... And who is on the floor at the end?
Every game is Parker's last game, so can he put something together?
Where is the guy that needs to step up and do something unusual?
Remember the game that Skeriotis lit things up and hit for 20?  Not saying it will be him, but we need somebody!

Quote from: Dr. Acula on February 27, 2025, 08:37:47 PMWho had Mount's crunch time 5 being Farrington, Moore, Casenhiser, Taylor and Collier?  Not me.  But they've played great down the stretch.

Thinking along the same lines.  I had to go check the roster to see who are underclassmen and was wondering if this was what next year's lineup may look like.

Excellent turnaround/come back.

Well ... What Mount Union team will show up tonight?

The Purple Raiders are 4-2 against the remaining field.
JCU is 5-1
Musky is 2-4
Heidi is 1-5

Quote from: D3fanboy on February 14, 2025, 03:47:30 PMbig time W for the Raiders, up next the last OAC road game of the season.  Huge matchup with Berg on Sat before two games with bottom of the pack teams at home.
I will be honest, I had the chalk in hand and ready to make a mark in the "L" column a couple of times. I think Vince Kehres would have called it remaining "poised" that led to the "W."
Purple Raiders are 9-0 on the other team's home court so far this year. 10-0 sounds/looks much better.
As for OAC "bottom of the pack" teams, at least Wilmington is off their remaining schedule ... SHEESH!!!

WOW! ... A whole lot of cobwebs here!  I feel like Indiana Jones ... LOL!!!

Yes ... Very frustrating as a fan watching.
I think it was Farrington that was underneath on the left and sent it over the hoop without hitting any iron.  An OTT defender on the other side of the board was surprised that the ball hit him in the chest.  It was the next time down the floor that there was some similar miss. Parker had a couple of beneath the rim misses, but speed of play and defensive positioning made a successful put up "50-50."
This team is better than what we are seeing, I think that many will agree.

Quote from: reality check on February 07, 2025, 04:09:54 PMHow we doing everybody?  I've gotten so disconnected from the OAC the last couple years.  I'm sure I've missed 98% Mount Union chatter/2% rest of OAC talk.  Life's just been busy and coaching has definitely kept me swamped. I spent last fall double-dipping between HS varsity tackle coaching and calling the offense for girls flag which is growing as fast as any sport in the US.  Six of my seniors have gotten offers to play flag at the collegiate level (NAIA) as it is blowing up as a college sports as well.  I still lurk here from time to time but don't feel like I have much to contribute these days.  Hope everyone is well.
No ... Hope you are well, my Friend!
Been a while since enjoying beer, wings, and conversation with you in New Haven.
I still bleed Purple and White, my Johns Hopkins doctors don't know why, and it is not, as you suggest, a result of stout beer and beef jerky!
Give me a holler if in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area.

Quote from: D3fanboy on February 01, 2025, 03:48:21 PMwhat a physical first half in Alliance.  Wilma is trying to bully Mount, the Raiders need to play smart and clean in the second half

what is it with Wilmington? terrible loss for the Raiders

They gave that one away in the last minute.  Up 77-72 and in order the PBP is:

01:05--Defensive lapse and give up an easy layup on the baseline.  77-74
00:38--Parker draws a foul.  Misses both FT.
00:28--Wilm draws a foul.  Makes both FT.  77-76
00:18--Steele is fouled.  Misses both FT.
00:07--Wilm hits a 3 pointer.  79-77

Finished 15-28 at the line.  Wilm was 13-17.  Guys not named Moore or Casenhiser were 7-20.  At some point it was going to cost them a game.  You can't play that many close games and shoot that poorly and escape 100% of the time.  FWIW when they were down 61-60 and had a couple technical FT to shoot Fuline put Casenhiser on the line for his first 2 attempts of the game (he made both).  He and Moore (6-6) were the only two I wanted at the line today.  I would say I hope it gets corrected, but at this point in the season it is what it is.  Some games they're gonna shoot 75% at the line.  Some games they're gonna shoot 50% at the line.

And I don't know what it is, but it seems like Wilm gets in their head.  They always seem to play sloppy against the Quakers.  It's like they pull Mount down in the mud with them.  Luckily JCU and Musky both lost today too.

The free throw line ... AGAIN!

Quote from: Dr. Acula on January 30, 2025, 10:47:56 AMThoughts from last night's 76-68 win in Etta...that was a rough first half for both teams, but especially Mount on the offensive end.  I think they shot around 30% in the half.  I mentioned before that I think the BanJo is the toughest place to play and it seemed like some of the guys were a little amped up early on and not playing like they normally do.  I think at one point they had taken six 3's and airballed 3 of them.  They were a different team in the second half though.  Moore and Steele being hot from deep was the difference in the game.

Farrington's absence was noticeable.  Mainly on the glass.  With him out it basically forced Taylor to be the second main rebounder after Parker.  Taylor did a good job, but the impact down the chain of Taylor now being your second rebounder instead of third, etc. was evident.  Etta seemed to be snagging quite a few offensive rebounds.

Bottom line is if you go on the road into that gym minus your starting PG and C, start two freshmen and leave with a W chalk that up as a big win.
Doc -
Appreciate your posts after every game.
I watch them all, but don't have the game-knowledge to express my observations the way that you do.
As I may have said before in limited posts, the free throw shooting, Parker's foul trouble (some deserved), and to a lesser degree, the turnovers and 3-point shot selection (Steele and Moore in this particular game notwithstanding ... 67% incredible) can become frustrating ... as well as some collective first half outputs.
I think that the Purple Raiders are a better team than what they are showing us so far ... period ... and that is with the players that are sidelined.  In the Marietta game, I tried to focus on Parker because of the foul trouble issues, and I thought that his 3 fouls/19 points was as we should expect in that sort of physical game. Marietta seemed to know that they needed to pressure him in order to get him into foul trouble, but it never really materialized.  There was a lot of contact on both ends of the court, but nothing that really got him in trouble. He does have a little acting ability of "I didn't do that" during non-calls ... IMHO ... which is fine ... LOL!
So glad that Marietta threw up so many of those 3-point air balls. I see that a lot in the junior high leagues.  ;D

Doc -
Appreciate your personal and educated recaps on the games.
I am following/watching but need to resist the "Why/What the fudge" posts as the games progress.
Frustration with the free throw shooting (probably better than last year) and my perception of Parker's early foul trouble.
Some "Who are these guys?" in the lineup it seems to me, but happy to know that there is that depth ... now or for the future.
"Gotta love the Big Guy," but sure do hope Vaden develops after getting a little more of the Chow Hall and weight room.

Blake Elliott (St. John's) in; Bill Borchert snubbed.

Congrats to Blake Elliott! very deserving. Dude was a dawg.  Congrats to the SJU booster program on getting him in!  If beating Mount Union one time is enough to put you in, I'd think that Mount should start piling up Hall of Famers.

Yeah ... I was at that 2003 Stagg Bowl.  It was the Wife's first, and she wasn't allowed back until 2015.

Remember, it was a win over an "unbeaten" Mount Union team for that only win ... unbeaten in both that season and in the Stagg Bowl.

Elliott, that year's Gagliardi Trophy winner, playing with a hamstring injury, had 110 yards rushing (one 51-yard TD), 51 yards receiving (wasn't he a WR by "regular" position?), and 27 return yards, and was voted the game's Most Outstanding Player.

I also note in the box score that there is some guy named Nick Sirianni on the Purple Raiders squad that had a "respectable" day with 106 receiving yards.  That sort of performance won't get him on a College Football Hall of Fame ballot, so I certainly do hope that he has used his college football playing days as lesson in life, maybe a springboard ... something that might land him on a "big stage" in the future.  If not, "Sports Equipment Salesman of the Year" is nothing to sneeze at!

Quote from: CaliRaider on January 06, 2025, 12:15:16 AMWith all due respect, those of you that refer to yourselves as Purple Raiders "fans" are a disgrace.  You know who you are.

Sucks to lose but to listen to the trash that you spew all year long is tiring.

These kids and coaches bust their ass, and you rarely ever acknowledge that. Easier to just throw insults after insults. Do us all a favor and try really supporting the team.

Signed a die hard purple raider champion!

"I'm sorry Mom!!!"

[Anybody else?]

Been said here before, my blood bleeds purple and even my Johns Hopkins doctors don't know why.
Always, Mount Union (1981)
