Messages - Eye of da TIGER

Let me weigh in on this topic as a former Oxy player and one that went to the playoffs two years in a row. Going 8-1, and winning (tying this year) 4 straight SCIAC titles is a great accomplishment, that no one can take that from them. Yet, I can guarantee you that the Seniors on that team, who have gone to the playoffs the last 3 years in a row, will not be satisfied or happy about being co-conference champs and not going to the playoffs. While they will undoubtedly be proud of their college football careers, not going to the playoffs their senior year will not sit well with them for a while. Its like once you have success the only thing that will satisfy you is more success. Dont get me wrong, playoffs or not, these Oxy Tigers have nothing to hold their heads down about, they will have 4 titles, (one ring and three watches) so if they ever feel a little down, they can find solace in the fact that they have more championship jewelry than any other Oxy football player ever!

I think we should start a new bowl every year where the two lowest ranked teams play!  What would we call it (Bob)?

Suggestions:

Tidy Bowl
Stagger Bowl
Failure Is An Option Bowl

No matter what it's called, the game will have to be sponsored by NBC and its hit reality show The Biggest Loser.

We are both Losers, but hey... someone has to win this game, Bowl!

what what what, the possibility of having two SCIAC schools in the playoffs at the same time :o....... imagine the flack we would get from our NWC buddies, not to mention the rest of the country!

Cal Lutheran (3-3) @ Oxy (6-0)
Pick: Oxy. The SCIAC championship is on the line. The Tigers will muddle through with yet another very average performance, win their 26th straight conference game, 33rd straight regular season game, and, despite FTP fearless predictions, clinch Oxy's 4th straight SCIAC title.

OxyBob

Yeah that sounds about right! Cant wait to see the Tigers play, i havent been to a game in the last three weeks, and what better game to go watch then the SCIAC championship game at Patterson Field. FTP while i do believe in Miracles, if I were you, I would be very happy that Whittier will win 4 games this season, doubling their wins from a year ago and winning the most SCIAC games they have won since 2000.

Way back in 2003, when we were supposed to travel to play Claremont, we found out that our game was actually cancelled and rescheduled due to fires as we were about to start loading up the buses. Coach W was nice enough to give us the rest of the day off and we even practiced in the gym for a few days in that week due to poor air quality. Haha, sounds like Coach W is just a lil easier on the players since the turn of the century  ;)

haha thats pretty funny. DIII football also got a mention on Sportscenter last night when Stuart Scott said that the New England Patriots are kicking so much arse and playing so well that they are making teams in the NFL look like they were DIII teams! Oouch!

Wow thats very unfortunate. Hopefully Cal Who can rebound, rally the troops and keep the momentum they have going and be ready for the SCIAC showdown with Oxy in a couple of weeks. He is the typical football player, getting injured, not thinking anything of it and playing through it, passing out a few times after and yet still thinking its because of something else! You gotta love this sport and my hat definitely goes off to him!

As for teams winning four straight titles, Whittier did it twice.  The last time they did it, Godfrey was their coach.

In my prior post I neglected to mention Whittier. The Poets won eight straight SCIAC titles from 1957-1964 under three coaches -- George Allen, Don Coryell, and John Godfrey. Whittier also won back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998.

OxyBob

Wow 8 straight is definitely impressive. As for Whittier rebuilding, it seems like they have been rebuilding for the last few years. Every year you hear about how young of a team they are and how much potential they have. Are these youngsters not sticking around till their senior year? Every year it seems they are poised to finally make their mark on the SCIAC and go from a rebuilding team to a contender and it seems in the last few years they have always come up short. Since my Freshman year at Oxy in 2003 Whittier has always played right there with us but they are unable to pull it out in the end. This year seems to be no different as they have showed early promise but have fallen a little in the last two games. Hopefully they can rebound, because it will only be better for the SCIAC if we had more teams fighting for the title rather than just the big three.

Some of you older guys on here or those with plenty of time to research it be might able to answer this question. But, when was the last time that any SCIAC team won 4 consecutive outright SCIAC titles? I know that Redlands must have done it, but has anyone else in recent history? Also, where does Oxy's current 24 game SCIAC win streak rank?

QuoteIsn't that an outlawed offensive trick play? Perhaps the reporter meant fumbleitis. Last week she spoke about a "chalk block." Maybe Snoopy was right after all.

"Hey, you chalk-blocked McLovin"

--paraphrasing Seth Rogen in Superbad

speaking of "chalk blocking" Chapman was cutting all freaking night. It is my opinion that the block should be outlawed. With people this big and athletic, blocking at the knee should be taboo. When I see OLineman diving at knees at the snap, I get pissed off abit.

I'm probably biased becuase Little Ricky could have busted a knee and leg..but regardless, I was about to go down and beat Owen's ass. :)

I dont really have a problem with it at all, unless of course its used like Trent Green used it. I thought that was reckless and cowardly. I dont care the guy weighed 300lbs, he wasnt even looking and a hit like that could easily end a career.

Cutting is just part of the game! Bigger WR's and RB's get cut down by smaller DB's all of the time! Rather than making the perfect form tackle they will fly in at your knees. In return, offenseive players get to do it to defensive guys rather than standing there and blocking them. From my experience at Oxy, Chapman is probably the best team at cutting, they must practice it a lot. Their O'line cut block and their WR's chopped down our DB's all of the time. On the other hand, I occasionally used the cut block to simply get a rest and lay on the ground for a second. I think in 4 years I was about 2 for 20 in cutting, maybe i should have practiced more.  ;D

Looks like it will be a great weekend for some SCIAC football, hopefully the weather will clear up so we dont have any rain at game time! Im actually looking forward to heading out to Claremont, as it will be my first game there as a spectator. Im anxious to watch Oxy play a little tougher competition this week, and perhaps get a better taste of what the '07 Tigers are capable of. We'll see if the Offense can continue to put up big numbers and if the Defense is truly as stingy as the first two games hinted at. As always, myself and many other recent Oxy Alum will be tailgating before and after the game and we welcome all to join in! Go Pack, Go Pack! I mean Go tigers!

Younger guys on the board should get that!

Welcome aboard Pmac,

Thanks for the picture link Cawcdad. Did you take these pictures???? They look great. As for your first pic, in which it seems like you are creating your own tailgate with a box of Natty Ice and a small crew, that was just priceless.

Yes I did take the pictures. Thank you for the compliment. As far as the first pic, I was walking around looking for OxyBob and OxyOswald, saw those kids, snapped the pic and moved on.

Too bad Cawcdad, good ole' OxyOswald is in that group of kids, you were oh so close to finding him. You should have come over and joined the Oxy tailgate, we are a welcoming group! The pics are good, and Im glad I managed to slip into a few myself. Hopefully, Oxy is using the bye week to work out some kinks and give those who might be banged up a chance to rest and heal. Although, knowing Coach W, the boys are probably working hard in full pads! And by the way, cant the Oxy faithful just all get along?  ;D

Aww TGIF! just a few more hours and me and 4 other ex-Tigers will be rolling up to the Bay area to catch the Oxy-Menlo game! Does anyone know where the pregame tailgate is going to be held? Im excited to see the Tigers compete for the first time this season, hopefully it will be a good game.

I too, dont think I'll be able to make it up to Spokane for the game.  Man, I wish I was still in college so I could just happen to be "sick" on friday and a road trip would not be out of question. Looking at games vs common opponents, this game figures to be a good one. Oxy has a group of seniors that are in this position for the 3rd consecutive year, the playoff experience is definitely on their side. Looking at the past two years in the playoffs, Collins has saved his best performances for this time! Oxy will be ready and barring a snow storm or a torrential down pour, the weather should not be a factor.  Maybe some nice alum will bring a snow machine out to Oxy's field this week just to make sure they are ready for anything. Anyhow, Im pulling for an Oxy win, and a St. Johns win, so round 2 will be here in sunny So Cal., where its 80 degrees in mid November.  ;D

Big shout out to Lady Tiger!! :D
