Was anyone successful in getting the livestream from Webster tonight? We could watch on the computer, but not cast, and the screen went blank whenever IWU had the ball. It wasn't a game for very long, but that was very strange.

Even this year, I wouldn't think that Mia Smith or Kent Madsen believe winning games by 25, 30 or more are great prep for games in March. It would be a challenge to keep your team from believing they're better than they actually are ( an occasional occurrence on the forum boards I would say ).
You can move a Midwesterner out East, but you can't keep her from watching basketball, apparently. Still keeping up with the CCIW via the Internet.
I'm quite sure Mia Smith would like to play more games against national competition--hence the annual Wash U/Depauw/IWU/someone else early tournament, and the games against WIAC teams. It's why the Titans usually end up with more early losses compared to teams above them. This year's Titan team looks really good; it's rare to see so many first year players so poised. I do share the concern about unrealistic expectations for the postseason, particularly with so many young players (and some posters!).

Linda, farewell and good luck in Virginia. Hope to see you in Salem soon, with the Titans back in the Final Four. That would be grand.
We'll miss you and Ron at The Shirk, for sure. You guys are some of the most loyal Titan fans out there, no doubt. Just like my parents were over almost seven decades.
Your parents have us beat by quite a lot, Mark. As this is our fifteenth year, we'd need another five and a half decades of basketball to match them!
Happy holidays and safe travels to all.

I've been pretty silent here for quite some time, although I've been a lurker and have seen some board regulars at IWU games. I'm moving on assignment (still affiliated with IWU), so I wanted to say goodbye "in person," so to speak.
My last game at the Shirk Center for a while was a beauty. The first half was almost perfect on both sides--good ball movement and intelligent shots. There was lots of good play that usually goes unremarked upon such as movement without the ball and boxing out. Chicago's Waller Perez hit a couple of early threes but was stifled by Austin Amann's defense before he could do too much damage. The little run at the end of the half, capped by Andy Stempel's half-court three as the clock ran out, felt like a huge momentum shift, and so it proved to be. (That three triggered Titan memories of one by Sean Johnson and one by Adam Dauksas, although those were both at the end of the game and not at halftime). The pace was slightly slower than that of a lot of games these days, and I for one thought it was an improvement. So call me a dinosaur, a throwback to Hoosiers:"How many times are you gonna pass the ball before you shoot?" "Four." "How many?" "Four." I didn't keep count, but it felt like that, and it was great.
Thanks all, for the updates. I'll continue to lurk. This promises to be a CCIW season even more crazy and interesting than usual. Even though I wear green to games, it's great to see North Park back in the mix. And I'm moving to Virginia, so I just might turn up if one of our teams makes it to Salem!

Very interesting night at Shirk--fun from a Titan perspective because of the victory and memorable because of the dedication of the court to Dennie Bridges, retiring after 51 years at IWU.
Ron Rose put a new starting lineup together tonight: both big men (Seibring and Marietti), Sodemann, Overstreet, and Dolan were the starters. Jordan Nelson was on the bench until the 4:00 mark of the second half, and I have no information about that. There was a lot of talk here over the past week of IWU hoarding players, limiting playing time for bench players, and Brady Rose being favored over other players. Tonight 15 players are listed on the box score, with 10 of them having 13+ minutes. Among those are Brian Nelms, formerly the third choice point guard; he played 13 minutes and registered 5 assists along with 3 points. Before the game I was wondering if he would get playing time next year; now, I have no doubt. Rose scored a career-high 13, Overstreet had 8 assists, and Sodemann led the scoring with 18. Overall the Titans had an A/T ratio of 25/4--it doesn't get much better than that.
As others have mentioned, IWU has a JV team while many other schools do not. Most of the JV players are first-years and sophomores. I've known, and known of, quite a few IWU students who came with an interest in playing basketball. Some are able to handle both athletics and academics, and some, after giving it a shot, make the choice to focus on academics. I know of none who felt misled about their prospects.
I'm sorry not to have North Park in the CCIW tournament. I think Juwan Henry is the most exciting player in the conference by a wide margin, and I look forward to seeing him next year.

Thanks, Greg, for your kind words earlier. I'm sorry we didn't get to chat, but you were understandably busy! Kudos to the Vikings, who earned that win. As a Titan fan, I couldn't help hoping that the comeback would succeed, but it would have been cruel to the team that had been better throughout.
I'm not sure what to make of the way this season is coming to a close for the Titans--and it looks as though it's closing very quickly. A few games ago they looked to have hit their stride but that seems not to have been the case.
Both Greg and Titan Q have been very kind to iiwwuu, who seems to have joined in the last week and whose first two posts are highly critical of--one could say an attack on--Ron Rose. The idea that a DIII coach--or ANY coach--could "hoard" players in the current higher education environment is absolutely absurd. DIII players are not on athletic scholarships (and those are limited even at DI and DII). All small colleges, including IWU, are finding it extremely difficult to cover the financial needs of their students and balance the books (and let's not even start on faculty compensation!). Combine that with demanding admission requirements and the job of recruiting becomes even tougher.
It's always easy to blame the officials in a close game. For the record, I thought last night's officials called a good game. I was pretty much surrounded by very vocal Titan fans who clearly though otherwise and said so. It's also easy to second-guess and even blame the coach. But those are tough jobs, and I'm glad I don't have to stand up to the vocal criticism that officials and coaches do. (Mine come at semester's end from the students!).

Did you have a point?
Nicely proving WUH's point. Well done.

Note to anyone trying to follow IWU's game with Austin College: The scoring is reversed on the live stats. With 4:15 to go, IWU is leading 79-54.

Hope Fontbonne gives Steve Schweer a look. He's going to be a really good head coach when he gets a chance.

I'll second that.

Electric, intense atmosphere at Shirk. It's very watchable from here. Great Titan defense and bench management so far.

Rog,
Sorry that you won't be around so much any more. I've been quiet lately but still following; this board will miss you. Hope to see you occasionally at some games or at least online. You probably won't see me at the NAIA games--but you knew that.
All the best--take care!

What about a medical school like Augie? Would make sense as we already know that every biology major at Wesleyan is also (pre-med).![]()
![]()
![]()
I don't have context of what you mean by this, or if you are joking, but as far as I know, just about every kid that majors in Biology at IWU is pre-med. (Probably the same at all CCIW schools with a Biology major?) Certainly all of my classmates in the early-'90s who were Bio majors are doctors now, and same for the student-athletes I've been familiar with as an alum, who are in med school or are doctors - like former PG Travis Rosenkranz and current sophomore Danny Roadman.
I have no idea why one would subject themselves to the Biology major unless they were pre-med and preparing for med school.
I also have no idea of the meaning of the original quote, nor do I wish to stray too far from the board topic. But a sizable number of IWU students are indeed studying biology without planning for medical school. They go to graduate school for advanced degrees and careers in academia, and they become high school teachers, among other careers. I am sure the same is true for other CCIW schools.
Let me add my congratulations to the seniors from all eight CCIW schools--if it's not Senior Day today, it will be soon. When I came here twelve years ago, I had no knowledge of D3 basketball, and no idea what an adventure--whether nights at Shirk or road trips, wins or losses--lay ahead. I've always thought that it's basketball that gets Midwesterners through the winters, and this winter has been the test of that belief!

Here's the Pantagraph article on the IWU-NCC game. Mia Smith's comments near the end are pointed, and spot on.
