Lots of people ranking St. Norbert ahead of Alma and those people are simply not doing their homework.

A couple people ranking Alma ahead of Ohio Northern, too.

You have to understand Ohio Northern had 10 days more practice and 3 extra Canadian games under their belt when the season started.  A huge advantage that early in the year.  I question if that same game was played now that the same result would happen.

I just looked up the D3 Massey Ratings for the first time ever and if I am reading them right Albion is #1 in strength of schedule and Alma #2.  That's pretty impressive.  Remember I'm a first timer!

North Park 82  Albion 77    ---1 pt game late but NP pulled away.   There was either a technical of flagrant foul late in this game, not sure which.  I only saw the lonesome ft shooter.

it was a flagrant, not a technical. Albion's Arshawn Parker pushed NPU's T.J. Cobbs in the back after Cobbs had gotten to an offensive rebound and was anticipating what would've been an easy layup if he hadn't been shoved.

Completely wrong!  Albion intentionally grabbed the shirt of a NP player going in for a uncontested breakway layup just past mid-court!  Missed one free throw and made 2 point basket after getting ball inbounds.

Mr. Sager, with your reputation on this board I hate to disagree but I was there were no flagrants were called.

Albion 86         Berea 84

Herron 17     Oakes 16     Hussein 14    Wheeler 13

This is the first year for Berea to play in D3.  They made a transfer from an NAIA school to D3.  Two very good players in Richard Parker 36 points and Dominique Garmon 13 points.  In my opinion both looked good enough to be scholarship players.  Albion was down early again by 12 and clawed their way back in it by half time.  Close game second half with both teams exchanging punches.  I'm sure the pace of the game was not what Coach May wanted with the score in the 80s but it seems that Albion may have a little more offensive ability this year.  Jibreel Hussein has helped immensely on the offensive end averaging 20 in the first two games.  Two good wins for Albion against two better than average opponents.

Alma played Ohio Northern U in their season opener last night. Saw lots of good things out of the Scots, but the huge amount of turnovers cost them the game. First game in a long time they dominated the boards in a game. During the second half from about 11 to 7 minutes in the game the Polar Bears went on a run that put them up 8 points and had a huge affect on the outcome. DJ Beckman is about 20 points from being the Scot's 11th 1,000 point scorer and finished with 10 on the night. Bradfield ended up with a double double, hitting some timely shots and protecting the rim. The x-factor was Ryan Burns from Ohio Northern, he finished with a double double, coming from 19 minutes, almost exclusively in the second half. The Scots take on CMU tomorrow night at 7!

At the end of the first half Alma was leading on the boards 25-11 and ONU only had one offensive rebound.  Bruns did not play the first half for some reason and still ended with a double-double.  He is 6'9" and a Freshman.  Had many offers to go bigger but liked the engineering program at ONU.  He will be a great D3 player by the time his four years are up!!!

Very interesting game tonight (6:00 pm) with Alma playing at Ohio Northern.  Both teams were picked by their league coaches to finish fourth in their respective conferences.  Ohio Northern may have a bit of an advantage with their season starting a couple weeks earlier than Alma.  Ohio Northern had ten days of practice and a few games in Canada before the rest of the D3 schools started.  They also had a game at D1 Northern Kentucky last Saturday where the lost by five.  ONU was only down 2 with 18 seconds left.  I would really like to see the MIAA start with a win here but things don't look so good with all the extra time ONU has had.  Ohio Northern by 7.

I would at least hope that St. Mary's would not play on May 3, Bing Crosby's birthday.

I thought it was Bill Cosby!

I wasn't at the game (fortunately), so I won't comment on it. I did recall that the court-storming issue had come up before after Hope students had stormed the court after a victory at Calvin (in January of '08). At the time I expressed concerns about safety and the appropriateness of the act. For holding this position, I was roundly pilloried by ... my fellow Hope fans, who heaped a good deal of invective on me for having the temerity to suggest that it is precisely when people are most riled up that restraint is most needed. You can look up their comments yourself, but some of the harshest criticisms of me then were made by persons expressing concern now. [NB: sac was not one of them.]

There are few things in life to be feared more than a mob, especially when that mob has taken leave of its senses, which may be aided by too much alcohol. I love basketball. I love the rivalry. But some perspective is needed here. I've gotten to know a lot of the posters on this board and have found all of them to be decent, likable people. I've even become friends with a few people I've met from posting. I hate to see this board turn ugly, which (like politics) often happens because we wear blinders.

Maybe I'm motivated by an "I told you so" kind of impulse, but really I'd like to have all of us put aside our Maroon-and-Gold or Orange-and-Blue glasses a second and realize that losing a basketball game is not the worst thing that happens to us in this world, and winning one is not the best. (I guess I've mixed my metaphors there, but I'll let it stand.) If Hope and Calvin students don't get that and behave reprehensibly, then our institutions have failed at a fundamental level. I can say this: if I witnessed a Hope student talk to the parent of a Calvin player (or anyone, for that matter) that way, he or she would be getting an earful from me.

My pomposity will now take the rest of the night off.

The best post since the heated rivalry ended.  Thank you HopeConvert for some common sense.

As a longtime high school athletic director and host of hundreds of heat rivalry regular season and high school tournament games, I have many concerns over what the game administrators responsibilities are at college game like this.  The legal aspects of someone getting hurt by a crowd of fans rushing the floor needs to be brought up.  Game administrators are responsible for the safety of the players and the fans.  There are ways to keep the students in the stands and everyone safe.  It doesn't need to go ESPN or to the NCAA, it needs to start with each school's administration.  People have sued for less than getting trampled on a basketball court.  Due diligence is a must among game administrators!

So my question is, did game administration provide a safe environment at game?  I don't know because I wasn't there, nor did I watch the video.

Also, I could care less about my karma so you Calvin posters can ding me all you want!

I would think Brink would be in line for All-Region.  Bigger region now, tougher to make the final cut.

Great Lakes Region--Leading Scorers
Bernard Edwards, Defiance     21.1pts
Thayne Recker, Bluffton           20.5pts
Jammal Coleman, Medaille       20.1pts
Delonte' Joyce, Bethany           18.8pts
Max Mollaun, Anderson            18.6pts
Jordan Brink, Calvin                 18.6pts
Justin Roth, Bald-Wall              18.5pts
Drew Mumford, Thomas More  18.5 pts
Claude Gray, OWU                   19.8pts

Lots of guys not on that list that would get consideration like Jarrett Ruffin-Mt. Union or Garrett Stephenson-Marietta, Xavier Brown-Wooster, Nate Axelrod-OWU, Dan Fannelly-Wooster.  Plus a few from the HCAC, OAC, PAC and AMCC I'm just not familiar with.

Have seen everyone on your list except Coleman, Joyce and Mollaun.  In my opinion Brink is as good as anyone on the list and better than most.  If I was voting for an MVP of your list I would have to say Edwards.  He's strengh, size and agility makes him hard to stop.  I believe he played High School ball in Detroit???

My eye sight is going bad.  I should start officiating.  Hope would never foul a Calvin player like that!

Was at the Ohio Northern vs Rochester, NY game yesterday afternoon.  Took over 2 1/2 hours to play an overtime game.  Over 2 hours for regulation time.  Games will be extended longer than you think!

Two good wins this week for the MIAA over the always tough NCAC.  Trine's win over a very good Ohio Wesleyan team and a win last night for Albion over a middle of the pack Kenyon. One has to believe the MIAA is a bit better this year than last.

Would really like to see some predictions on how the MIAA will end up this year?  I saw the Coach's poll but have a hard time with a few of the placements.

One positive for Albion today was their bigs outscored and rebounded Augustana's bigs.

One negative was Albion had 19 turnovers.
