Quote from: 79jaybird on February 05, 2007, 01:13:44 PMHow does a player walk the fine line of being more physical and not fouling out, Which is what happened to him at Wesleyan.
Nick Michael has been a great Senior Leader for the Bluejays and teams up well with Ruch and Hintzsche inside. HOWEVER, I do feel that Nick could benefit from being a little more physical. Sometimes he gets that "passive" approach, which often doesn't get the outcomes he's looking for. Still, I am glad he is in a Bluejay uniform because him and Ruch are a great 1,2 inside.

Refs did a nice job protecting Zach Freeman tonight giving him a total of 11 FTA's
just one more and he would have doubled what any other player received.
Sports, I'm guessing that you weren't actually at the game, tonight. Most of the charity stripe tosses that Z took were in the second half. He could have had many more. From the start, you could see that the officials were going to "let them play". That's fine, but don't say the officials were protecting Zach. He was absolutely mugged a few times and no whistle blew (just as Michael was bumped on some shots and no whistle). The beginning of the second half, the officials tried to "reel it back in". Touch calls here and there. Then it went back to the physical play. There were several times that the Bluejay Bigs could have been called for extending their arms or pushing off, but that's just the kind of thing they were not calling. I couldn't understand why Scherer would say anything to the officials about foul calls: it was just the type of whistle that he wanted.
All that being said, the officials had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. Elmhurst played a great game and were the better team. From the opening tip, where Ruch fought for the ball to gain the opening possesion, to being up 15 - 4 at the 16:10 mark, to the end of the game...they battled and won. I would start naming Elmhurst players that had a good game, but I don't recall one that played poorly.
Actually I watched the entire game on streaming video very nice benefit Wesleyan offers. I'll totally agree with you the refs had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. But, when the big men underneath are battling as hard as they were and the trips to the charity stripe for one player is so out of balance with all the other players (on both sides) somethings not right.

Looks like lots of great battles in the 'ol CCIW this season. Just based on tonight's games who knows what might happen from from one night to the next-------------
Just look at the ranked teams tonight:
Elmhurst (at home) beats #12 Augie
North Central (on the road) beats #16 Wheaton
Wesleyan (at home) beats #17 Carthage
Not sure which can be considered the biggest "upset,"
Maybe the North Central defeat of Wheaton based on the facts of the largest disparity in the rankings between the 2 teams and that its very tough to win on the road, especially against a ranked opponent.
At any rate, it should be a wild season. With NPU and Millikin also being able to knock off any other team on any given night, I don't think it would be very surprising for the eventual conference champ to have at least 4, quite possibly 5 conference losses by the time all the smoke clears.
Maybe none were "upsets" and the almighty D3 top 25 is A educated GUESS at it's best

Are there any radio broadcasts of the games played at the Orlando shootout?

Possibly Elmhurst's loss to Millikin was due to Scherer's wild substitutions in the first half in which Bluejays scored 30 points. In the second half when he let one squad play without constant player changes Elmhurst scored 45 points.

Mark Scherer's quote about his players paying too much attention to the Internet and not enough attention to boxing out really cracked me up. If he's angling to take Rees Johnson's place as the CCIW coach most likely to grouse about this message board, the position is wide open.
Seriously, I don't think that Elmhurst is the team most likely to lose perspective due to being stroked too much by CCIW Chat comments. Those of us who have commented upon the 'jays at length, such as Bluejaybacker and myself, have not praised the 'jays unequivocally. I don't think any Elmhurst player would be likely to get a big head from reading CCIW Chat, with the possible exception of Chris Martin -- and if there's one guy in this league who strikes me as being immune to outside comments, whether good or bad, it's Chris Martin.
