A few tidbits on future Eph Nate Robertson:

http://www.detnews.com/article/20090422/SPORTS05/904220447/1049/sports05/Detroit+News+All-Metro+boys+basketball+team

http://www.insideprepsports.net/09rankings.html

And another article on Chase Hicks who, as Amh63 noted earlier, is looking at Williams among other schools (I have not read anything about a decision being finalized yet):

Pioneer is notorious for producing Larrys.  Robertson will probably show up on the first day wearing tivas, tube socks and a fanny pack.

Also, I don't know why you think I wouldn't rank the '08 class as being one of the most talented classes in Amherst history. I can't speak for a very large period of time, but you guys were definitely the most talented class during the time I was there.

be nice, the truth.

anyway, that class was the perfect example of guys willingly sacrificing personal ambitions for something higher.

Question:

Can anyone list recent captains of 'CAC programs that weren't starters?

Hmm, there are definitely more people on those teams than I remember from my day, but I'm not sure they're any better.

Their results from last year - 11th of 11 at one tourny, 20th of 23 at another, 7th of 10 NESCAC teams - do not seem to suggest that a lot of tips are going on.

I know they got a lot of walkons and I'm pretty certain at least 2 of the players on that list -- Bradley and Wong -- were recruited for their skills at a different sport.

Also, I think if the Athletic Department were serious about competing in golf, they would hire a coach who was focused only on the golf team, rather than letting Arena and Mills run it.

Ya.  I was kidding.  I doubt that Amherst Golf takes itself very seriously; just look at the roster photos of Marcus and Glenn.

Amherst barely bothers to field mens' or womens' golf teams

And check out the clowns they end up with as a result...

Looking at the roster, I'd say that the men's golf team has benifited from tips just about as much as some other sports, no?

i would like to nominate gabe from wesleyan to the inaugural "seniors who nescac fans will miss the most" team.

he was a mountain of a man. an absolute giant who maneuvered among mere mortals like a bull shark hunting the native mexican children that frollic about in waist-high murky river water. all that crying will do nothing to save you. you will be mercked by the bull shark, the fiercest of all sharks. gabe represented everything that was good about collegiate athletics. he will be missed.

Couldn't agree more.  Gabe hung around amherst after Wes played there last year.  Absolute legend.  Reminds me of a young Jamie Snyder-Fair.

You have also solved the problem of student-athletes who are much larger than their classmates.

You're obviously kidding about that being a problem, right?

One wise guy believes that there is a 60% likelihood that Shapiro's successor will be less favorable to Williams athletics than Shapiro has been - in other words 3 to 2 against them dumb, academically insouciant, undeserving, socially insensitive, drunken jocks - especially the hyperaggressive, male kind.

So you're saying the Lord Jeff football team has a chance next year?  ;)

Such a great way to end each school year.

Couldn't agree more.  Warm weather+cold drinks+softball=good times.  Maybe head over to Pizza Hut after the game, relive the childhood a little bit?

I'd vote for Goldy and Fletch to represent the Herst.  Every team needs a couple of powerful lefties for the middle of the order.  Goldy was on the baseball team his first two years, but never broke into the lineup (apparently the baseball coach didn't take kindly to basketball players?).

Basketball is actually a 2nd sport for most of the amherst hoops players.  Their true passion...intramural softball.  Here is last year's lineup:

1. Olson 2B-  ++ glove, high OBP
2. Bradley 3B/SS-  iffy glove, + speed, cancer in the clubhouse
3. Walters CF-  + arm, ++ range
4. Goldsmith SS/3B-  + glove, ++ power from the left side
5. LaVerdad LF
6. Hopkins 1B-  high OBP
7. Wong C-  the chinese nat'l team wanted him to play in the WBC
8. Jones P  Fastball, change-up, curve, ++speed
9. Holsey RF  liability

Awwww, snap.  Patty C. just called out the entire NESCAC board!  That's cold brother, cold.

Ahh, I guess, but there are about 10 Hall of Famers and nearly 10,000 registered posters, so not having someone in the top .1% shouldn't be considered a big slam.

As Frank has pointed out, the NESCAC prides itself on having nothing but the top .1%.  ::)

Yep, I sent the NCAA an email this afternoon and they said they will clarify the rules next year to make sure the host school always plays second in any round with doubleheaders.

Charlie,

The paperwork is filed, so I'm taking a little vacation.  Shouldn't you be out shopping for lederhosen or eating sauerkraut?

In other news...

Watch out for ya boy, Billy Hoyle, T-pain, young Kap, whatsa Hollll-sssee, Donald, Flaw-less, B-B-B-B-Billy BUTTler, kUURRt, Cons, the FUGG, and of course the "Hix-Six"

Consider yourselves warned.

Great, another crazed amherst fan that thinks making up nick-names for the players means he is somehow an insider.  Got a little too much time on your hands, eh Charlie?

I am told the Amherst freshmen look very good. they should provide solid depth at each position.

My guess is that Hixon will be looking to start one freshman.
Below is the way I see the starting 5:

1 - Meehan
2 - Wheeler
3 - Baskauskas
4 -
5 - Holsey

Bennett and the first year bigs will all be competing with Holsey for those PF and C minutes.

Holsey's shot got pretty wet towards the end of last year.  If he can knock down open jumpers, then Hixon could play Bennett at the 5 and Chibs at the 4.  The main problem with that line up (and the one you have proposed) is that there is only one player that can really handle the ball.  I'd expect to see Wong and Bradley get a lot of minutes at the 1 and 2?  I could be wrong...all my sources graduated  :'(
