interesting to see Eric Elliot return to Hope to coach the JV squad.  i'm sure more than a few hollanders were disappointed to see Carlson leave (don't worry, he'll be back), but it is great for the program to see Elliot return.

He is probably one of the most likeable and successful players (during and after school) the MIAA has seen.  It's wonderful to have him back on campus guiding the next generation of dutchmen.

could be an interesting interview process when gvw finally steps aside if elliot really enjoys coaching and carlson returns to apply for the position.  I still give the edge to carlson since he's the holland boy much like gvw, but it will be intriguing to see what elliot does with the jvs.

Facenorth,

I think what MIdoubleA and Devossed are trying to point out is that the cost to attend Hope, even for a student who pays full tuition is less than what it costs Hope to provide said students education due to donations to the Hope Fund.  Yes, some students, even exceptional athletes, pay the full cost of tuition, but the premise is that they are still receiving an excellent value.

It's just a hunch, but I'd said facenorth has a better idea than most of us how the interworkings of an MIAA institution really function.

In my (limited) experience the atmosphere at Cornerstone is more conservative than at Calvin.  Rules are more tightly held at C'stone vs. more freedom at Calvin (and I presume Hope).  One recent example was the expectation that all profs at C'stone are expected to sign a form indicating they will not smoke or drink alcohol on or off campus.

thanks for the info... so, you're telling me cornerstone is SCARY conservative, at least it can't be as bad as wheaton....

oops, i probably offended someone

One draw that Cornerstone has to a certain portion of the pool of potential students is the (more) conservative religious atmosphere (than when compared to Calvin or hope).  Some students prefer that point of view.

northb, maybe you could explain this one a bit better... don't quite know what you mean by more conservative religious atmosphere...

yes, the RCA and CRC are pretty similar yet i would imagine you'll find some significant differences in the religious atmosphere between hope and calvin also

However, when a progrem brings in Wolfe, Hare, Vander Hiede, Van Solkema who were on scholarship  to  pay 28 g a year. It looks weird. Especially when a player is thrown in the mix half way through a season. That doesn't mean that Hope cheats, but no one can look at that and not be suspious. No matter how darkly tinted your glasses are, deep down even Hope fans have to wonder.

If spending millions on a new fieldhouse is buying these guys then okay, but i'm pretty sure they know about that when they were originally recruited by Hope.  Your skepticism about how these guys ended up at Hope is ridiculous.  I'm pretty sure if you compared the amount of financial aid athletes received at Hope compared to other MIAA schools you'd be suprised at how little financial aid the majority of Hope's athletes receive.

Got me wondering, what other sports have sites for d3?  Obviously, Pat runs these sites for basketball and football.  Most here could probably care less, but there is a fairly well traveled swimming site at...

I would imagine he will be Glen's replacement when retirement time comes.....

hopefan... for some reason people on here get upset when you mention Glen and retirement....  i think it will come sooner than most, but i'll guarantee Neil isn't his replacement

There has been some talk in some other forums about the best players in D3 history.  Who would you put on an all-time ALL-MIAA team?

I'd probably start with the following...

Honderd
Veenstra
Holstege
Elliott

I'm not exactly sure how D3 eligibility works, but Dustin Smith was on Calvin's 2004-2005 track and field roster.  Calvin declares an indoor (winter) season.  Could that affect his eligibility?

http://web1.ncaa.org/ssLists/sportByInst.do?sport=MTI&division=3

Dustin Smith just completed his freshman year of basketball elgibility.
He has 3 years left(if he wants to use his fifth year)  He is currently
competing in his sophomore year of track.  An athlete has 5 years
to use up his elgibility.  The clock started with Dustin at Hope last year.

Similarly, Jeff Carlson has completed his 4th and final year of basketball eligibility but will still play soccer next year in his 5th year of overall NCAA eligiblity although only his second season of soccer.

Coaching women is hugely different than coaching men....I think that the head coach of Hope College will continue for a long time.  Seeing this team back in Ohio, I recognizedd two of the assistants.  Maybe one of them will want the job if it opens.

Yeah, those two have been at GVWs side for a long time, but neither is qualified to be employed as a professor at Hope.  Thus, Davelaar and Neal won't be the next coach.  I understand coaching women is much different than coaching men, but the success Morehouse has had with the women grants consideration.

P.S. GVW will quit sooner than you think.  A trip to Salem this year may have been his farewell.

I know a few of you have posted messages ragging on GVW and stating that he can't coach, etc.  In my opinion, he can stay as long as he wants, but I don't think that is going to be any more than a year or two.  So, the real question is who replaces him?  Personally, I think there are 2 candidates.

Chad Carlson and Brian Morehouse.

Right now I give the edge to Carlson, his story is just too similar to GVW's and he is absolutely beloved at Hope.

However, if Morehouse has any interest whatsoever in the job how could Hope not consider him.  The job he has done with the women has been remarkable and I think it would be difficult to turn him away if he really wants to coach the men.

Obviously this post has nothing to do with MIAA basketball, but if Calvin's hockey team wins today the championship game broadcast tomorrow will be available on the Calvin sports website.  Puck is set to drop at 12:15 EST for the title tilt.  Calvin would have to get past Northwood today.  Hope made a nice run in the tourney but fell yesterday to Wright State.

Calvin has a hockey team but deems football as too violent a sport.....brilliant.  It seems curling would be more Calvin's speed for ice sports.

Here is my problem with the hockey tournament.  I am pretty sure both schools only have club teams and they play in Division III of some association made up by a bunch of hockey fans because no one likes hockey enough to have it be an NCAA sport beyond a select few division I schools.  Ultimately, who really cares, is it really that great an accomplishment to win that tournament.  If they were varsity sports and there were an NCAA championship on the line then I might start to care.  I'm amazed that Calvin would broadcast it on their website.  I'm just as surprised Hope's website gives the hockey team as much play as it does.

Not to muddy the waters, but you NCAC fans are delusional if you think there is going to be a Wooster/Wittenberg matchup in the tourney.  There are just too many good teams in the regional to have it come down to that without a LOT of good fortune.

I know that the DeVos Fieldhouse has been jokingly called "The Dick" by some Calvin fans.  I for one kind of like having a nickname for the new digs.

What are Hopes chances of hosting next weekend (assuming) they hold court today and tomorrow.
