It was a 3 on 2 situation for the Dutchmen on a fastbreak on the same end of the floor as Hopes bench. A shot came off the front of the rim and then caught the back board. Wade Gugino went straight up and while Tom Halbert was coming from the baseline. Both grabbed the rebound in unison and slammed it home shattering the back board. Even for a holiday crowd with most of the students gone, the place went nuts. Play was suspended and the game was never made up.
I happened to be at that game as well. In fact I still have pieces of the backboard that was shattered.
