UN-believable!

Calvin was down 2 sets to 0, down 8-16 in the third set, and came back to beat Juniata in a final for volleball game. Wo-hoo!

It was incredible to listen to (though had to follow live stats during final set). Amazing!!! I wish I could have heard the crowd after the win.

John Mantel and Matt Veltema will be taking part in an exhibition event held on Saturday at the Palace. John will be in the slam dunk contest while Matt will be in the three point shootout. The event features a mix of Michigan high school and college players.

Thanks. Jake's doing great. Worked hard all year and his back is much better. Thanks for asking.

Congrats to Matt Veltema who won the 3-point shootout last night at the Swish and Slam! Mantel declined his invite to this event a loooong time ago, not sure why they still had him listed. The All-Star game was the perfect way to end his career, just a great time of fun camaraderie with the other players from around the country. I'm so glad Veltema had the opportunity to show his stuff last night. He was an outstanding player.

Thanks for posting again CCM.  Yes it was nice that John got into that game in Salem.
How is the rehab. going with son # 2?

I was hoping to save this for about 6 games or so  ;), but I guess it's official now.  Congratulations to the Calvin seniors Campbell, Veltema, and Mantel.  You handled yourself with nothing but class and dignity during your time at Calvin.  You will be sorely missed next year.  Blessings on all your future endeavors!!

Thank you!!

Well, I'll indulge myself and take this opportunity to say that it has been an absolute joy to watch John and Matt play together over the last four years. They are men of integrity and leadership. And while they were playing incredible basketball and reaching the 1000 point mark, etc. they were doing an oustsandng job in their academic life, making the Dean's List and working toward their degrees. Sometimes we (even I) forget that it is a lot of juggling to do. And to the (sometimes) fan's dismay, athletics haven't always been the number one priority. I know Matt will soon be a teacher, and John has finished his Mechanical Engineering degree in four years and already has a job! These are great accomplishments. It was a thrilling final game and I was blessed to see John leave it all on the floor. It is heartbreaking to be over, but my inspiration a few minutes ago came from John's words on his facebook page where he gives nothing but thanks to God, his family, his girlfriend, his teammates and all those who have supported him over the years. To God be the glory both now and forevermore!

We often tout D3 as the level where true student athletes play for the love of the game. If Spencer truly loves the game he may simply want to play at the highest level possible, and he probably feels that JV ball isn't that. That's not necessarily egotistical (as you both mentioned), it could be confidence and passion. Some players decide that staying on JV and getting a shot next year is best for them, and others simply want to play wherever that may be.

Surely we wouldn't have faulted him for choosing another MIAA school originally, and so I don't fault him for wanting to play for another school now. He tried to play for one of the best, and the situation didn't work out for him.

Well said, KnightSlappy. I agree.

Congratulations to the Hope PLAYERS for being a class act.

Ummm...is calling a kid a name because of how he looks ok?  it is at Calvin...

purely rhetorical question but....having attended very very many high school and D3 games in the past 20 years...why is it the Christian-school born and raised kids seem to belittle their opponents the most?  Not saying it doesnt happen in other schools just hear it more from them.....

Please accept my apologies. My post was in no way calling out the Hope students/fans at the game. It was a reactive quote to some of the posts since the game. The Calvin fan "incident' was uncalled for and embarrassing. In general, the students/fans from both Calvin and Hope were great at the game. My post was also an indirect comment on a few ungracious Calvin posts after the win (thus thanking those posters who WERE gracious). I need to remind myself to take responsibility for my own posts and let others do the same. Good luck in the tournament.

Unfortunately, winning doesn't always bring out the best in folks.

Congratulations to the Hope PLAYERS for being a class act. They played a tremendous game last night. Jesse is an outstanding player. I know they will represent the MIAA well.

Congratulations to Calvin on winning the regular season title. They struggled through a lot of adversity and came a long way. Hats off to our seniors--Caleb, Misha, Tim, Tyler, Mike and Dustin. Thanks to the Calvin fans who were gracious in their congratulations to Hope and represent Calvin well.

Thanks for all the ticket replies.

Could someone also tell me based on the following seating chart:

http://www.calvin.edu/map/sfc/vannoord-arena-seating.pdf

what side of the arena are the player benches and what sections are designated as student sections?  Also, had heard that students standing is no longer an obstruction unlike Knollcrest was.  Is that accurate, it doesn't matter if you are behind the student section does not impact ones view.

Thanks again.

Hi. Section 112 is right behind the Calvin bench. Sections 104, 105 & 106 are where the Calvin students sit. I don't think there is a problem with obstructed view (due to students standing) in this arena. I hope that helps. Oh, and the opposing team's students usually sit in 114.

I am so glad Calvin got past Albion. Albion is such a good team. John used to play travel ball with Stasiak and Stasiak always brought such an intensity to the game in high school. It seems Albion teams do the same thing.

I think the Brits have a good chance of knocking off Calvin if they can get a handle on John Mantel and keep him from dominating inside. If they can force Calvin outside, Albion usually does a good job of not allowing too many open jumpers outside, and as has been noted, apparently Calvin struggles shooting at home.

The only guys that have been able to control John have been wearing zebra stripes.  If John picks up early fouls and has to sit, Calvin can have trouble getting things going.  I haven't seen any player or team stop John yet this year.

I wasn't at this game, and worse yet, the broadcast wasn't working (for me at least), so I'd love some insight into the flow of this game. 44 total fouls (I think) and John fouled out. I assume it was a very physical game. Were the refs being picky or making pretty good calls?

Hey everyone. Mea Culpa for over-reacting last week. Thanks for the reminder, NW Hope--a little wine, some dark chocolate (and several kind emails) helped me calm down.

Reimink scores more while Mantel has the edge in rebounding.

Reimink also plays more minutes.  If you went by points per minute, or points per 40 minutes, that gap will close some.

Sure.  Per 40 min stats are fun to calculate.  I'll take the guy that actually plays the minutes over one who boasts the allure of impressive production in limited minutes.

I don't think the players (either Reimink or Mantel) are campaigning for themselves for MVP OR boasting about anything. And I wouldn't call 25 minutes/game "limited."

Where is your wine mom??? I didn't think you had buttons???  ;)

Thus the "disappearing act" last season. Good luck everyone!
