Yup...good win for the loggers with our back-up qb playing the entire game. Watch out when Williams gets healthy again!

2008 football here we come!

I'm pretty sure you guys have picked it apart already, but what did you all think of the NWC preseason predictions? I was surprised to see the Bearcats up so high after a fairly disappointing year last year. Also, my Loggers are 5th again, when really the only big loss was Rory Lee and a few members of the defense. I wouldn't mind seeing some reasoning behind the selection, as it generally seems to fall in the same pattern year after year.

Thoughts? Comments?

Here's the 2008 Logger Roster: http://www.ups.edu/x13179.xml

Just got to reading the WW press release about the game...sounds like Nick Koller, WA state B-8 player of the year had a pretty sweet game, especially on that last drive. Congratulations you little squirt....you've come a long way since LaCrosse-Washtucna.

"B" school sports for the win!

Yeah, its surprising who makes it onto the All-Conference lists...although I can't complain too much...I was on one once. Who knows if I deserved it. :)

Very sorry to hear about the loss to the Wildcat community and my prayers and thoughts go to the young lady's family and friends. Thank you for giving the forum community the chance to grieve with you, WC11.

Just for the record...Rory got his records yesterday.

101 yards on the ground, broke the single season and career rushing marks.

Congratulations RL.

UPS came right at us today.  When they took a 21-14 lead, they had a real chance.  But the defense adjusted and the Loggers did not get much going after that.

Mike Allan deserves a lot of credit.  It would've been easy for him to get caught up in the Hula Hoopla, but he was clearly focused on what needed to get done today.  His first TD showed what makes him great.  At his size, he just outsprinted the UPS DBs.

Yeah, big props to the big tight end. He pretty much carried the entire game on his shoulders...200+ receiving yards? Yikes. Something's wonky when the first play goes 69 yards for a TD to the 6'7" tight end....it's not like anyone should miss him.

And I was fairly excited in the first half....I really just think the Logger coaching staff needs to work on half-time adjustments....there's really no reason the 2nd half should always be so flat for the Loggers. From the consistency of it occuring, I just don't feel like its the kids anymore. But, I wasn't there so I could never tell.

An exciting game today at the Pine Bowl.  UPS came out firing on all cylinders and the Pirate D came out flat.  The Pirate offense finally threw to Allan out of his three point stance at the tight end position and look what happened.  Heck, the Pirate offense finally started to throw to Allan period.  UPS was a better team than last year and that QB (freshman right?) is gonna be a force in that offense for years to come.  I'm glad UPS's program is on the upswing, it's good for the conference, but I do see a problem...I don't mean to bash UPS but this is something thats become more and more appearent to me the more I see UPS play...UPS will never win the NWC untill they run a more balanced offense.  If you were watching the game today, you knew that after UPS's first series after being down a couple of scores that there was no way they were going to be able to come back and win.  What is the coaches reasoning behind running a wing T type offense anyways?  Do any of the UPS posters know the logic behind this?  If you really want to run 80% of the time you could at least run a Rich Rodriguez like spread option attack, to keep defenses out of the box.  Enough of my ranting.  Congrats UPS on a good season.  Linfield will be back, its a given when you have 120+ guys in your program.  GO RATS, beat Oxy and nobody will have to listen to OxyBob and Tooth go on and on about Occidental.

P.S.-I hope you weren't involved Hatchetman, but several of the UPS fans were the rudest people I've ever heard at a football game.  They acted like a student section with obsenities flying left and right.  Luckily there weren't too many kids in that general area.

The way the UPS offense is designed, it's always been meant to be played as a 65 - 35 game. However, thats never been the case for whatever reason. Coach Willenbrock calls it the West Coast Wing T, and there's supposed to be alot of short drop dump passes, but it just never works out. I think the offense has just needed a real solid QB, and I think they will have it in the next couple years with Williams. The kid is a tremendous athlete, and he will certainly be the captain of the team for the next few years.

And I wasn't involved with the heckling. Yesterday's game was an interesting one, as I know there were many families and outside students attending the game to watch family/friends. Several of them were from bigger D-I schools, where that sort of thing is more commonplace.

However, UPS fans are notorious for raising hell, as anyone who's attended a Puget Sound basketball game should know. They're unruly, loud, and truly take the opponent out of the game. But, they have their own section in B-ball, and I'd hate to have my child around some of that nonsense. Anyway, I hope that didn't put a smear on the game for you, and I hear it was a great day for football.

H-man, I assume you're talking about the "if whitworth loses then what...?" right?

I don't actually see it changing much except where the Rats would play next week.  I think if they win they get a home game vs. Oxy next week.  If they lose to the Loggers (which I think is certainly possible) then they play at Oxy.  I don't really see a Rat loss helping Linfield nor do I see it doing anything for the Loggers.  The loggers would still have 2 regional losses (1 to a weak PLU team and the other to a Linfield team who lost to 2 highly rated Regional Teams and beat UPS head to head).

REally the only big if is "if W&J loses" does Linfield jump over them into the playoffs.... Hard to say.  Had the Loggers not lost to PLU then  this weeks game would be much more interesting in the play-off situation as a logger win would then have caused a 3 way tie for the NWC crown and the Loggers would have to be given some respect outside of the conference.  OH well....should have, could have, would have.....Good Luck this week!  I think it will be a fun one. :)

Yeah, that was my thought on the whole process as well, but it helps hearing it from another person. Thanks again Monrovia Cat...once again you've proved that you're a sane voice in a squall of insanity.

Bluenote,

On the bubble:

Linfield (5-3, 4-2)  @ Lewis & Clark (0-8)

And What IF:  Puget Sound beats Whitworth?

Puget Sound (7-2, 7-2) @ Whitworth (9-0)"

Can we actually get some breakdowns of if this happens then this? I'd like to see some, just to sate my own curiousity.

By the way, very high marks go to hatchetman75 for predicting a UPS win over Whitworth. The man is obviously a genius.

:-* Love you too, OxyBob.

Pretty good predictions Monrovia. Thankfully UPS got to do all their Senior Game stuff last week and against LC, so they won't need to worry about playing their seniors that much.

Interesting H-man--if my predictions were pretty good then why are yours all the oposite (except for the Linfield game)? :) :) :)

I said they were pretty good....doesn't necessarily mean I agree with them. I also think hamburgers are pretty good...but I'd eat pizza over hamburgers any day of the week.

O.K. Here we go with predictions for this week---the X-factor is that with this being the last game for most teams in the NWC scores/stats could be affected by teams leaving starters in or playing Seniors....etc.:

UPS at Whitworth:  As I said yesterday, I think this one will be close.  UPS has a strong running game and Whitworth can be run on (at least more than they can be passed on).  UPS also plays pretty good run defense which means J. Clark will probably have to put the ball in the air more than he has in recent weeks.  Look for the score to be pretty low but for the Rats to ultimately win this one due to their better passing game and better overall defense.  Rats 21 Loggers 14

Pretty good predictions Monrovia. Thankfully UPS got to do all their Senior Game stuff last week and against LC, so they won't need to worry about playing their seniors that much.

Here's my take:

Willamette comes up with a win, despite being on the road. Very close though.
W 28 - PLU 21

Menlo plays terrribly on the road, won't start doing anything different, loses to Mac.
Mac 21 - Menlo 10

Linfield is going to brutalize LC, simply because last week hurt so much.
Linfield 63 - LC 7

And the kicker....

UPS is going to pull off the upset this week. It's going to be very close, but (excluding last year) UPS has typically played Whitworth very close. Several UPS players are from the Spokane/Eastern Washington area, so expect to see a large Logger fan turnout. I know my family will be there, even Grandma is going to be there for the game. It'll be cold, but UPS has had to deal with rain for the last few days, so weather won't be a factor.

Look for Lee/Williams to have big days.

UPS 28 - Whit 20

Rory Lee has chance to break career and single season school rushing record held by Gary McCurty and Daryl Wright, respectively.

He was also about 6 yards short of breaking the single season mark last year as well.
I believe more like 86 yards short, but whats 80 or so yards.

Yeah, I think you were misconstruing what I was trying to say Tux...he was only a few yards away last year. I remember watching the WOU game wishing Rory would quit running backwards. :)
