I would like to take a moment to say how proud I am of the D-3 Football Family. The outpouring of support for Chris Norton and his family has been inspirational. All of you who check his site daily hoping and praying for progress know what I mean. The list of coaches, players, parents, fans and alumni from all over the country is amazing. And I know the IIAC community will continue that support for the long months of rehab that's ahead for them.

GO CHRIS and GO NORSE

I think "it's silly" as the Bolt says that he is getting all wired up about it. I think your stuff is solid, bp.

Looking forward to a major Homecoming weekend here in Menomonie. Weather should be perfect, tight game probably as the Devils take on the aerial assault from Point. The beer will be cold after the game at the Ale House. The town is already starting to bust at the seams with people.

Sometimes life is pure bliss.  8-)

Thanks, BDB! I appreciate your perspective!  :D

Have a great time Saturday! It should be a great game! Nothing quite like football Saturday in a college town in October!  ;D :D ;D

I second that on all points...talk about a stuffed shirt!!  ;)

Nope BoBo, though I am from Wisconsin, there is nothing stuffed in my shirt or hanging on my living room wall. He is obviously looking for feedback, comments or opinions or he wouldn't post it on all the boards. I should have realized the only opinions wanted were those in agreement. Never questioned his fan-hood or the work he puts into his site. Only the logic of the levels within the top 25.

Even though it cost me "karma" last week:

BPD3 Level System Top 25

www.uwwfootball.blogspot.com

No offense bp, you are obviously a big fan of your team and put a lot of time into being a fan of the WIAC and d-3. But this is just plain silly. The only legitimate poll  (IMO) is right here on this web site. It already has 25 different levels. If one felt the need to break it into six groups, look at the number of points behind each team and the breaks between groups is pretty obvious. And with 25 voters across the country, one voters bias doesn't skew the results. The way you bounce teams in and out and up and down (especially WIAC teams) kind of flies in the face of your whole premise of grouping like teams together.

I don't know if this has been talked about before or not but I'd like to know if anyone can actually confirm that they see Luther's McGivney tackle anyone and everyone that seems to touch the ball. He was credited with 12 solo tackles and 13 assists today.
Distant cousin who is an alum and saw the Homecoming game between Cornell and Luther said the only player on the field for Luther was the guy you mentioned....McGivney.  He did move from sideline to sideline like Chicago Bear #54.  Otherwise it was a boring game except for a near Cornell College victory.

I've been having trouble wrapping my head around this one as well.  Granted, I haven't seen him play...or anyone else in the IIAC for that matter.  But he has 2x as many assisted as solo tackles, and is on pace for 216 total tackles this season.  He's also averaging about 4.5 more tackles/game than anyone else in the nation.  He is accounting for somewhere in the area of 40% of his team's tackles.  That seems absurd to me.  I can't decide if there has just been very helpful stat keeping, or if the defense is set up to allow this to happen, or if he is such an athletic presence why teams aren't making an attempt to avoid him.  Any one have any insight?

You need a lot of factors to come together to put up those type of numbers.

1- The obvious, you need to be on the field a lot. That's why you never see the best player on the best team leading in tackles. Three and outs early and watching the 2nd stringers late doesn't help stats. The Norse are last in TOP this year, same with last year. They never get ahead by enough that he comes off the field. You will find him on kickoff and punt teams. He is on the field for every play there is a tackle.
2- The defensive scheme is friendly to his position. He was the leading tackler in the conference last season by four tackles a game. Alex Meirau was near the top the year before that and Marcus Hendrickson for two years before that.
3-He's a helluva athlete. Missed his Freshman year with injury, started as a safety his Sophmore season and grew into a linebacker. He can run with recievers and bring down backs in the open field but is plenty big enough to to make plays at the line of scrimmage. He is a good sure tackler in an age where you don't see many.
4-Helpful stats? I've never cared enough to count, but I'm sure he doesn't get any help in away games. He is averaging 17.5 on the road. I believe he holds the Illinois High School record with a ridiculous number. It's what he does. He tackles people. Set the all time Norse record for tacles last week, in the 2nd quarter of his 5th game, in his third year.

The BPD3 Level System Top 25 unveiled:

NOTE:
BPD3 Level System Top 25
To add to the intrigue and fun of the ranking system, I am creating "Levels" within the Top 25. In the "Level System", I will be grouping teams that are reasonably comparable in my opinion and exposing where I believe there is a drop-off of some kind between ranks.

Is there anyone "intruding" on Level 1 with UW-W and Mount Union?

Where do the "breaks" occur between levels?

What level is Coe in?  What about Central?

www.uwwfootball.blogspot.com

While Yes, I'm biased, the fact that you have Coe down to 13th, Central at 18th and dropped St. John's out of "your" Top 25 makes me want to give you little credit.

Don't let it bother you. If his sub-conscience had a vote, I'm sure Platteville, River Falls and LaCrosse all would have received one vote.

There are enough missing players for a spring season.

Wartburg JV beat Simpson's JV and most of their varsity 27-21 yesterday in Indianola. Wartburg dressed 49 and Simpson dressed about 100.

With too much time on my hands I compiled the following football roster numbers

1.  Simpson         141
2.  Central           126
3.  Wart               116
4.  Coe                100
5.  Luther              99
6.  Loras                93
7.  Dubuque           91
8.  Buena Vista      75
9.  Cornell              60

It appears to me that Simpson should have the largest JV squad.  Wart left 67 players home.  If you subtract 67 Varsity players from Simpsons total that would give them 74.  Wart has also won some games by a more lopsided scores than Simpson allowing them to put more sub in and thus fewer JV players eligible to play.

Another explaination might be that footballdady was using his fingers on his right hand to keep track of the tens and couldn't figure out how to use the second hand to get an accurate count of the Simpson players.

Good luck to all squads Varsity and JV.  Do we play any Freshman games?

Just askin'
What happened to the 130+ that Dubuque started the year with?

Looks like Wartburg lost about 18 from the start of camp and Cornell kept almost everyone.

Actually it was 170 plus. I assume that a lot of the same mathematical formulas were used as the year before when 110 new faces joined the three returning classes for a total of 90 something.

I'm not sure who would have been considered the offensive guru of the conference over the past few years, but I'm convinced now he's calling plays for Coe. They better lock him up because others will be calling. Some of the things he does with formations and route patterns in combination with the tempo they play at, makes it damn hard to adjust to. I think they caught Central off guard early with their running game coming out of the formations they used. They didn't show that the week before and probably not in the first two games either. Of course it doesn't hurt to have real good athletes.

I thought the penalty letting Coe out from the 1 yd line was also a huge turning point. Brondyke placed a great punt down there and the coverage was brilliant, Coe fumbles literally on the goal line on first down and then we let them get away that on second down penalty. Central still held the lead.

Yes that was a pivotal point in the game. Without a replay, I wouldn't say for sure but it looked to me that Boyle went to a knee to pick up the fumbled snap. That would have given the Dutch defense a break. But all in all I thought the officiating crew did a great job of letting both teams play.
I'm not sure what the adjustment was at half time either. I know the Coe linemen were crossing and stunting a lot in the first half and got burned badly by the Dutch a few times. Central didn't have the ball long enough in the second half to really tell.

Classy in defeat as always Klompen. And with so little practice at it, :)
Truely was a great game to watch and I'm totally with you, at half time it didn't look like Coe would ever be able to slow down the Dutch much less stop them. I didn't count the offensive plays that Central had in the second half, but they didn't have the ball ten minutes in the entire second half. Central has a great D-Line, but with the T.O.P. and the tempo Coe played at, they were just gassed in the fourth quarter. Some times you just have to tip your hat to the other team. Good luck the rest the way.

A nice clean half by two good football teams in terms of penalties and turnovers, in less than ideal conditions. (IF) one team is going to pull away in the second half, the Dutch seem to have the better chance of making some defensive stops. But I think we can put to rest any talk of Coe not playing anyone.
They are playing someone now and holding their own.

Wow, everything I had hoped for so far. No surprise the Dutch special teams is having an impact.
Looks like both sides of Centrals fronts are gaining in strength.

The Dutch and Coe fans are chomping at the bit, to go all in.
And Knight fans keep slow playing their hand.
