Congratulations to COW on an excellent performance - "take what you need and leave the rest" was a great game plan.

As for the Little Giants, in full agreement with the previous posters regarding the defensive schemes being un-Wabash like.  Further, there need to be some major upgrades on the O-Line play - Holy Hell, when has Wabash surrendered seven sacks and ten tackles for loss (outside of some games against UWW and UMU)?  Certainly hope for a rebound by the team AND the coaches as it's Witt Week.

Congrats to the Cookeville Flash (Mason E. and not the former coach of the TX Longhorns  ;)) - definitely a better place and location than as a recent grad assistant at Defiance.

At the Rugby Weekend at Soldier Field this Weekend in Chicago (3 Matches: US Women's vs. NZ Women's; Ireland vs. Italy & US Men's vs. NZ B Team). Saw the below schools

-Norwich
-UW Platteville
-UW Whitewater
-UW Stout
-Fellow John Carroll!
-Denison
-Illinois Wesleyan

A couple of additional ones from Soldier Field - Hope (though he plays for Grand Valley), Bethel (didn't engage and suspect from IN rather than MN), and Kalamazoo.  Great weekend though had hoped for better USA showings versus Maori and the Black Ferns.

Thanks for posting this reminder, "1837."  Max Urick seemed to have a fascination with a "balanced" season - 3 wins, followed by two ties, and concluding with three straight losses - a perfect .500.  As a rhynie at the 1970 edition, following a long night of running around a bonfire, this was a tough way to lose but certainly applauded the decision to go for a win.  Really appreciate your historical posts.

Excuse an deranged luddite for broaching missed PAT kicks in Crawfordsville last weekend (and throughout this season), but want to toss out a thought (perhaps even some levity for some other geezers  ;)).  With the advent of artificial turf allowing for a more predictable bounce, has anyone ever considered a possibility of resurrecting the "dropkick" as a conversion tool?  Granted, the last successful one in DIII dates back twenty-two years - by St Lawrence vs. Hartwick - and lost popularity by the mid-1940s in exchange for range and supposed precision and accuracy.  Just imagine a "jack of all trades" athlete being in a single back set for the "extras?"  Will he pass, run, or pop it through the posts - simple formation, simpler execution on the snap, no holder, and three unpredictable options facing a defense.  Under Article 10, the rules continue to exist.  Okay, so I'm bored in retirement today...   ;D

Agree fully regarding Gebele in the 4th stanza.  Home crowd, all-time yards and tds' through the air, and against a stalwart defensive unit (which now remains to be seen as season progresses).  Had Denison played an entire game like this last week against Witt, there wouldn't have been a need for any overtime, Period.  The Big Red has become a solid contender in the NCAC and were downright impressive.  Kudos to Coach Hatem and his charges.

As to Wabash, it seemed players were just going through the motions with no enthusiasm or emotion.  Several times, both receivers and QB had near misses and just walked back to the line with "devil may care," ho-hum attitudes with one notable exception in Jones - no quit on either receptions or kick returns.  Thomas didn't even crack a stat sheet other than participation page.  It was good to see Penola back lugging the ball a few times and hope that continues beyond the predictable third and short, vanilla calls.  LGs best get their daubers up and heads on straight as there are five left and .500 isn't beyond the pale if last Saturday's performance becomes a norm rather than hiccough.

According to the box score it was Neyrig who missed the 2 extra points and the fieldgoal try. Marr made his extra points.

My bad, Sir, as box score suggests and previous post is now edited accordingly.  Marr's two misses were in games 1 and 2.  Regardless, after missing only 2 PATs and 6 FGAs all of last year, these same kickers have already missed 4 PATs and 4 FGAs in the first three games?  Blocks and bad snaps are obvious to the viewer but these just seemed errant kicks to this old 'Bash fan.  My first Monon Bell game as a student was 1970 during the Urick season of threes...  ;)

No disrespect intended but after four (4) missed conversions from Marr and Neyrig this season, who might be installed as the regular placekicker for Wabash?  Just curious...

NOTE:

Per WLGHistorian, my previous observation is in error either due to dirty bifocals or a buffering computer.  Lesson learned - listen to Brett when he calls the away games on WNDY rather than local commentators and sideline human interest stories.  Marr had his accuracy issues (2 missed PATs) in first two games (though 5/5 today) while Neyrig missed his two PAT attempts today in Gambier.

Thanks for catching my faux pax.

Defiance's football web page coaches section notes they have appointed a new head coach already.  As the previous new release about last year's HC leaving, it noted they were posting it as a 10 month position rather than a full time position.  I assume that would be considered an "Interim" HC position just for this year since it is so close to this new season in having been placed in this situation.

Also, I was somewhat shocked to see that the enrollment is way down now in the mid 500 range as compared to several years ago. I realize, they have usually been below 1,000 for years, however, getting to that range, I would think is a concerning situation.  Olivet (MI) was like that for years, yet has rebounded and appears stable just over 1,000 students.  Yet, there are some NCAA schools with small enrollments that have sustained stable football programs, such as Eureka, IL.

Anyone have any info on Defiance's situation regarding all the above, Cave2, Pat? Or anyone else here in HCAC?

PM sent Dr. H. and glad to see you back for another fun-filled season! Sometimes my opinions are best reserved for private amusement.
::)

Re. % playing sports, Dr. Acula, two years ago about 35-40% of the DC male population were on August football roster (n=128).  Noticed this year's roster only lists sixty-six but unsure if incoming frosh are listed yet or if Defiance continues to suffer "retention deficit disorder?"  Time will tell (or "dwell") for Coach Matsakis (Good Luck, Sir!) and his charges.   8-)

Wabash has posted its early 2018 roster.  Listed are 88 returning players, 74 freshmen, and 4 transfers.
Among the freshmen/transfers are 10 quarterbacks.  Last year's starting QB is not listed.  And last year's backup QB is listed as a defensive back.  So, here's hoping one or two of the new guys can play,  I don't like going into a season with so much inexperience at such an important position.  I'm sure the coaches don't either.
Thinking back, I recall a similar situation about a decade or so ago--Matt Hudson emerged and went on to be two-time NCAC offensive player of the year.  Hope springs eternal; the odds scare me.
Oberlin, Hiram, and Wooster also have rosters posted.  Oberlin shows numbers in the mid-40s.

I don't know that I'd be scared, Sigma.  For me, it's more of an interest as have to believe / hope that something was seen in the spring and with new recruits that pushed our backup to "D."  Is it a QB issue, or a lack of experienced DBs and needing one who understands Ramsey's scheme to "educate" the host of rhynies lining up for evaluation.  In any event, those are some impressive numbers for the preseason listing and certainly, we should find 30-40 studs out of 166.  Please don't call me Pollyanna, but I see those odds as fairly decent.  ;) BTW, thanks for keeping the boards alive the past few weeks - the stats and trivia were great!

Well called by Bear - DePauw got 21   ;)

All analysis aside - susceptibilities to long balls, turnovers, running games, defense "getting off the bus - ready," I'm actually thinking along the lines of "karma."  How fun would it be to see one of the post-game custodians boot through a winning three-pointer ala Haverkamp a few years back?  Definitely a year to recall - blocked field goal to self for TD, the downer of a bungled bell snatch, and then winning the game on DePauw's pitch while mopping up Bear's peanut shells and GOK what else.   ;D

I think Wabash fans could cool it on the cost of tickets after the Monon Village/super duper premium re-entry ticket cash grab that went on in C'ville last year.  What a cluster.

What was this? I don't recall any changes last year in Crawfordstuky but the Danny elite mostly stayed in the "Arts Center" lot prior to kickoff. Never heard about the Village People or re-entry...

Better that you all didn't know.  The whole thing was poorly communicated, poorly executed, and more than just a tad exploitative.  There was also to be a beer tent inside the stadium (super premium entry fee, of course) that got scrapped at the last minute for who knows what reason (other than it being a horrible idea in the first place).  Was hoping that last year was just some growing pains with the new AD and new ideas, but after another year it seems clear that this kind of buffoonery is the norm.  Wabash can and should do better.

+1 Wally - hit it on the head from several different directions starting top>on down.  ;D
