I know where the finalists are working now, but it wouldn't be appropriate to comment until the committee makes its decision. Any way it shakes out, I think Guilford will get a solid coach.

Any big names from the D1 or D1 AA level?
Can't be any worse than what they just had! Hope they bring in someone from the Quaker family and not an outsider too!

Yeah Kiesel's first year HSC game was a crazy one. Vogelbach didn't start because he had a concussion and we started by running the option with Langston starting at QB. I asked the safety from HSC about that game later in the year and he couldn't believe that we came back.
Well I hope they make an educated decision this time and leave it up to the athletic department to chose the next coach. I know the last time someone else made the decision and it was a disaster.

Even when Guilford was winning football games with Kiesel the coaching was bad. A few years ago when Guilford beat Greensboro the Quakers threw the ball 79 times in one ball game! The coaches refused to run the ball and Greensboro almost came back to win. Throwing the ball that many times in one game is ridiculous. I guess they never heard of the concept of having a balanced offense.
Yeah I agree with this. We would throw the crap out of the ball. It was fun to do but the defense was always on the field. When I was there we had to throw the ball most of the time though because the games would be so back and forth. Alot of the throws were just long hand offs.
Many people probably don't know this but Kiesel tried to run the ball when he first came in. We played Ferrum the first game of the year and probably ran speed option with Vogelbach 10 times. We didn't begin throwing the ball every play until Hampden-Sydney that year. From there on we would throw the ball on a average of above 70 times per game, but we were also winning then too.

Hasa,
It is quite embarrassing to hear that is what happened on the way down, but it comes as no surprise to me. When the Kiesel regime first came in there were several players that never should have been on the campus and they were brought in to help us win right away. They were there one semester and gone the next I cannot speak for the years after but I'm sure that is why the graduation rate is so terrible.
Again the reason they we were able to win was due to the assistant coaches. Not sure what happened to Hargis but he was the OC there for a couple of years and the WR coach when I was there. He had a lot to do with the success of throwing the ball and then all of a sudden he was gone I believe that has a lot to do with the downfall of the program was him leaving.

Guilford will not renew Head Coach Kevin Kiesel's contract for 2011, so a national search is underway for his replacement. Good luck, Coach Kiesel, I wish the best for you and your family!
I was a senior when Kiesel was brought into Guilford. He was very "Bipolar" in the way that he would handle us. He would tell us and threaten us with doing something and then never do it. I can remember if Ketchum told you he was going to do something you better be ready because it is coming. That year we went like 0-4 in the first 4 games and like 5-1 in the remaining 6. The things that helped us that year were having great assistant coaches and bonding together as a team and refusing to listen to Kiesel and letting him get to us. Kiesel was allowed to get very good assistant coaches throughout his tenure where as Ketchum was not allowed, especially his last year where he was basically coaching every aspect of the team and that is no exaggeration of it either. My point is that if Ketchum was given everything that Kiesel was allowed to have we would have been a very good team. We were still a good team but Ketchum had a lot better way of getting us to play. I hope that they don't mess up the coaching search again because from the looks of it now the program is in pretty bad shape but they have great facilities now. ABNRGR hope your son is doing well.

hasa,
And I quote, "I think it's time for someone to step up on that defense and make some plays. I know your out of position but you should be the leader of that defense and get them ready to play. Defensive End is a pain in the butt but your a good player and shouldn't matter where you play at you should be making plays even if your real position is linebacker. Lets go #40 it's your last year."
While you might be making a critique of his leadership skills, others are actually questioning his abilities on the field. As somebody who personally went head-to-head with him for three years, there should be no question of his abilities. I personally think he's been handcuffed by the schemes he's had to play again. Which brings me back to my original point, blame Kiesel & Co. or the entire team. Don't put the blame on one player.
My point is that he is the best blitzer that I've ever seen. He can time them up and get in and make a hit. I also know his leadership skills and they are very good as well. I just hope to see a better performance this week against those damn people across town.
Honestly the problem is is that they never have been able to run the ball good enough to kill the clock. I just remember the year that we came out and nobody could make a tackle on the field that is the most sickening thing to see in a game. I'm not talking like I could go out there and make tackles because I never was a defensive player but dang make one stop in the game and you will win.

Offense wins games defense wins championships. That holds so true in this case.

Well I've been away for awhile because of my own football problems. But I have a serious bone to pick right now. I really don't understand how Guilford cannot stop Hampden Sydney on at least one series to win a game. I mean come on its not that hard fly around and tackle people. I know you have to play the whole game because the offense scores so fast but that should just mean condition more so your ready for it. I think it's time for someone to step up on that defense and make some plays. I know your out of position but you should be the leader of that defense and get them ready to play. I haven't been following this site that well lately but I would like to inform everyone that all charges in the Guilford case have been dropped from the DA. This case would never have gone that far if pursued though because there wasn't that much evidence from what I hear. I am sad to notice that the media doesn't clear these people but they are sure quick to assume things and run people into the ground about something that they aren't even quilty about. This country needs to seriously look at how it handles things because its like you guilty until proven inocent.

Ranger you couldn't be more right about it. The athletes are the minority at that school and I experienced it for four years myself.
