Because its UD vs. Loras this Saturday ... do you throw out the record books for such a cross-town rivalry and get ready for one hell-of-a-football game?  How will (1) last Saturdays loss to Central and (2) this Saturday's Homecoming affect the outcome?

As a side note, I was back at UD teaching in the late 60's and early 70's when UD - Loras athletic competition resumed ... starting with basketball.  Those were some pretty intense games.  The story (probably apocryphal) was in the late 50's at a UD - Loras wrestling match ... in a very tight, heavyweight class match, the Loras wrestler somehow managed the grab the back of the UD wrestler's jockstrap and snap it.  The UD wrestler then responded equally inappropriately and that set off all the fans in the stands with a "riot" ensuing.  Athletic competiton between the two schools was suspended for more than a decade.

The Iowa Conference in those days included Parsons College, Iowa Wesleyan, and Upper Iowa, but not Coe, Cornell, or Loras.

All that from the "For What It's Worth" Department.

The DBQ is way better than Loras this year.  The Rams had a chance against Loras and no chance against the Spartans.  The Duhawk defense is not that imposing with or without Hall.

I think the Central and Wartburg fans can attest to how good that defense is.  And trust me ..... its much less imposing without Hall in the lineup .... best combination of size and speed as far as any defender in this conference goes.   I hate to see the kid miss a good portion of his senior year but it will greatly help the Dubuque cause this week  8)

UUUGGGHHHH  >:(  tough one to drop today .... hats off to the dutch, they just seem to find a way to get the W each week.

I'm hoping we can get things back on track and get the W against that tough Loras D.    What happened in Storm Lake today?  Also, I heard Brock Hall is done for the year after having some sort of surgery this week .... can anyone shed some light on this

Things looking good for the spartans so far ... don't remember when the last time was I could say that!!!!  ;D

I was talking to my nephew at Loras and found out that they are pretty thinned out at the RB position and that Hall was stepping in on the O to go along with his defensive duties!!  Can anyone from Loras confirm this?

Congrats to all the winners this past week.

Wanted to throw in my two cents for the upcoming season ....

first i'll start off with what I feel will be the final standings
1.Central
2.Wartburg
3.Coe
4.Loras
5.Dubuque
6.Simpson
7.Luther
8.Buena Vista
9.Cornell

Offensive MVP - I like TeKippe from Coe, I feel if he gets time from his line he is one of the top QB's in the leage, and with the loss of Suckow it will come down to him throwing the ball a lot more.

Defensive MVP - Hall from Loras, was recently contacted by the Falcons my Dubuque informant told me and I think he's the most dominant with his combination of speed and power.

Players to watch - Sherden - can he stay healthy all year and have the same impact as he has in past years.  TeKippe - same as Sherden.  Hall - IMO most dominant defensive player in the conference.  Suckow - how will he be used at the 'burg?

Coach of the year - McMartin ?  Central ... i think thats the name right?? ???

Rushing - I'll take Schuring from Central as he as the experience and a solid o-line to go with it

Passer - Jackson from UD or whoever is running the show at Luther as they seem to like to spread the ball out

Receiver - McIntosh or Suckow

Tackler - Hurts to say it, but I'll take Brock Hall from Loras, seems he's forgotten about while playing for the DuHawks.  single handedly won the game for Loras last year and a few others from what I hear  >:(

So I was in attendance for the Loras/BV game today, just wanted to share a few thoughts ........ I have some family ties with BV so don't hate fellow Spartans 8)

If I were any team playing Loras ......

I would load up the box and make them pass the ball, their QB doesn't impress me much, struggles when pressured as their O-line is kinda weak

I would attack their corners, #27??????? got burnt three times for about 40,50, and 70 yards.  The corners do not attack well when thrown at, curls can be used against them all day.

Hall might be the best defensive player in the conference, kid doesn't kid the credit he deserves IMO.  Made plays all over the field, coaches at Loras need to find a way to use his abilities more.

Some of the offensive calls on the Loras side were very questionable .....

The Beavers hit the big play today and Loras did not.  Basically came down to the three big pass plays......

Congrats to all the Winners today!

Just wanted to throw in my picks for the week

Central over Luther - 27 - 10

Coe over Dubuque - 42-35

Loras over Cornell - 30 - 7

Simpson over BV - 17-7

Wartburg over Augsburg - 24 - 7

Some thoughts ....... This will be another test for the Spartans against Coe, they almost pulled one out against the DuHawks but couldn't capitalize .... Should be quite the shootout!  Also, will Loras be able to keep rolling against Cornell?  Hope they don't look past the rams as they can def. play some ball!  Good luck to all this weekend!

Throwin' in my picks for the week:

BV vs. Cornell - I'm going to go with BV here, this one could go either way IMO (17-10)

UD vs. Luther - Luther's power game scares me, but I think UD has to many weapons!  (30-20)

Loras vs. Coe - I don't think that Loras 'd' has what it takes, plus I hear Hall is out for the game.  Coe 28 - 10

Wartbug vs. Central - My game of the week! obviously! I'm goin' with Central 24-14, bye week prooves beneficial for the Dutch!

Good luck to everyone this week!!
Last week was a rough one being a Spartan fan!  Loras has tremendous team speed on 'D'.  I was surprised!  I think Hall might be the fastest LB in the whole conference, quite the athlete!  As for next week, I think our team team speed will come in quite useful against a solid Luther team!

GO SPARTANS!
