The Middlebury/Trinity game can be heard live on ESPN 1490 starting at 12:35 or on the web at www.wfad1490.com with the broadcast team of me, myself and I.

Game time temperature is expected to be in the low 60's, slight wind and about an inch of rain expected throughout the day today.

Update: There are thunderstorms in the area and lightning has been spotted so there could be a delay.

The way it has been explained to me is that the NESCAC does not want to add games because of the amount of time football takes, and they do not want to have the kids come back early from summer break. As this is the Northeast, weather concerns have also been cited.

Now do I think this is a good explanation? No, I don't. Every other sport can play out of the conference and in the post-season; not allowing football the same to me is just wrong. These are athletes who I am sure would love a chance to play in the post-season, and to play more games. I think that allowing teams to play outside of the conference and in the playoffs would help when it comes to recruiting. There is national exposure that could be gained in the playoffs which of course would be good for the conference.

I, like Tom, feel very strongly about adding a ninth game because of that rivalry. A Norwich/Middlebury game would be HUGE in this state, especially since they are the only two teams in the state that play college football. In talking to people over the last couple of years, this is something people want and would go to.

I not only agree with one additional game, but adding two so all teams can play each other, and play an out of conference game as well. Tom and I spoke about this on Monday, and obviously from one of my quotes, it is something I would like to see.

This is going to be a great weekend for NESCAC football. Trinity/Middlebury is very intriguing and Amherst/Tufts should be a great battle as well.

Strange, no activity here today. Middlebury wins 13-0 over Bates but the Panthers were flat on offense and committed penalties at the wrong times. The defense was outstanding as always.

If the offense plays the way they did today there is no way they will beat Trinity. They will have to perform much better than they did today.

I figure I can get some good answers here. What can you guys tell me about Trinity and Middlebury? I'm going to the game on the 27th, unless someone else comes up, and I'm wondering what I should be looking for.
Thanks.

Middlebury is a solid team this year, but really didn't play that well last weekend against Williams. The Panthers freshman quarterback Donald McKillop has shown good poise in the pocket, and until Saturday's game against Williams didn't make too many bad decisions. In the Williams game he tossed five interceptions and the Williams defense seemed to confuse him. At wideout, Andrew Matson has been McKillop's favorite target as he caught ten passes last week. In the backfield, David Randolph and freshman Gary Cooper have done very well.

The defense is strong as always. Erik Woodring, son of former Jet John Woodring, has been named NESCAC defensive player of the week twice this year and is fun to watch. Alex Buggy is the team's emotional leader and plays like he has been shot out of a cannon. The rest of the defense is very good and they have a strong secondary.

As far as the field, you will not find a better place to watch a game. There are stands to one side and an un-obstructed view of the soccer field and Green Mountains to the far side. The tailgaters are awesome, and it is a great crowd.

If you are looking for a good place to eat, head over to the Middlebury Market and Cafe. Big portions and the price is really good too. It is where I eat before home games and they take very good care of their customers.

I have a preview of the Middlebury/Williams game up on the blog at www.vermontradioguy.blogspot.com. When writing out notes for the games I do, I just do them like a script and then post them for Middlebury parents and whomever wants a look at the game.

The Amherst/Middlebury game as stated should be the game of the week. Both defenses are VERY tough, so it should be interesting to see how the offenses do.

I like what Middlebury is doing this season on the offensive end. They are throwing the ball more and have thrown a few wrinkles in. Their freshman quarterback Donald McKillop threw three TD passes to Andrew Matson last week and he makes much better decisions than you would expect from a freshman QB. The running game with David Randolph and Gary Cooper has been good as well.

Middlebury's defense is everything I expected this year. Erik Woodring has been outstanding as has Alex Buggy, Nathan Shreve, Brian Marcks and others.

Amherst of course has been deadly on defense, and their running game with NeSmith and Rauh is one of the best two headed monsters in Division III.

Last year's game was 7-3 Middlebury, this year I see Middlebury winning 10-3.

You can catch the game on the web at www.wfad1490.com. It will be the tag team of me, myself and I with the call.

I was looking at the Middlebury roster. There is a young man from California named Blake Kos. Anyone know if he is getting any playing time out there? Thanks..he is an old Pop Warner teammate of my son.

He is getting a little bit of time on special teams. I met his grandfather in Amherst who drove out from Southern California for the game. Neat guy.

Great to see Middlebury at 3-0 to start the season, especially considering the anti-panther bias that seems to plague this forum from time to time.

The Panthers always have problems with the Ephs, however, so Saturday will definitely be a challenge for Coach Ritter and Company.   I am pretty sure that the last Panther win over Williams at home was in 1987, long before the new Alumni Stadium was even built.  Naturally, Trinity will be tough as well in a few weeks.

Fells, Enjoyed listening to your call of the game this weekend from Amherst.  Great work.

First off, thanks for your kind words. Doing games solo is always a challenge, so I am glad it sounded good.

As far as the game this weekend, this is going to be a good test for the Panthers. Pat Lucey is one of the best QB's, if not the best QB in the conference, and the passing attack will be unlike any that the Panthers have seen this season. Combine that with a solid running attack and the defense will be able to show that they are one of the better defenses in the conference.

On the offensive end for the Panthers, they will be facing one of the statistically weaker defenses in the conference. I think that if Williams does not turn the ball over like they did against Bowdoin, this will be one heck of a game. If they do turn the ball over, and they have the worst turnover ratio in the NESCAC, Middlebury will  take advantage and score points off their mistakes.

I really like how the Panthers look this season. Their offense is solid and the defense has been outstanding. McKillop is playing beyond his years and I have also been impressed with Gary Cooper who can fly. David Randolph had a pair of TD's against Amherst and he has really developed as the feature back.

Airtime at www.wfad1490.com and on ESPN 1490 in Middlebury is at 1:05 with the kickoff at 1:30.

If you head up to Middlebury, make sure you stop up to the press box and say hello. I would love to meet the man who knows all about Trinity.

Only if I can get a halftime interview in the booth. OR an autographed 8x10 glossy of Butch!

I think I can arrange the former and not the latter. See ya in a couple of weeks.

Home team in CAPS.

I'm taking all the home teams this week.

FAVORITE   SPREAD   UNDERDOG
TRINITY       15       Hamilton
WESLEYAN   6.5       Colby
WILLIAMS     10       Bates
TUFTS          7        Bowdoin
AMHERST      3        Middlebury

I agree that all the home teams will win outright, but with the spread I'll take Bowdoin. Nice job Capt. but only a 10 point spread for Williams - Bates? I'm not a gambling man, but if I were I'd bet the house on the Ephs at home. Any Bobcat fans think they can knock the Ephs to 0-3?

If Midd can show the same type of offensive production this week as they did against Wes and Colby then I may have to make some travel plans up to VT on the 27th.

If you head up to Middlebury, make sure you stop up to the press box and say hello. I would love to meet the man who knows all about Trinity.
