Skibbity - Wonka was in the house. Didn't you see him looking for skeletons in the closet? :)

haha I missed that....perhaps my vision was blocked for the brown paper bag I had over my head.

Duke = Classy.

A few observations about the Gustie game last night.

• Holland scored 7 straight points for SMU early in the game with some sick jumpers. He was the only one who played even relatively well for them.
• GAC went on something like a 53-19 "run" after trailing 21-19.
• Doble shot 8 of the first 9 times he touched the ball.
• SMU had absolutely no intention of playing defense last night off the ball. Kane scored like 8 layups on simple cuts to the hoop.
• SMU warmed up like they were playing in friendship bowl of the intramural league.
• Winona State fans littered the crowd last night, making it feel like a Gustie home game. Two crazies painted their bodies black and chanted for Drinkall all game...until former SMU coach Biebel told them to shut up.
• Nick Carr started inside for SMU and did nothing. Wasn't he supposed to be a star if given PT?
• SMU assistant Nigel Jenkins was stranded in a snowstorm between Illinois and Winona last night on a recruiting trip gone bad.

Greg Oden's commercial is hilarious.

Willy-- were you in attendance at last nights game? If so, has Schmidtknecht been playing that well all year? I remember when I was at the game in St. Peter, I don't even remember his seeing the floor.  Seems to have a good lookin shot, and he's a lefty which makes him even tougher to guard!

Duke sucks.

Gusties dominated tonight. Look at the final and then consider SMU was up 21-19 at one point.

Got some interesting info on the Cards roster situation that I'll save until tomorrow, to make sure it doesn't get lost in the game recaps.

Who won the UST/BU battle?

I look forward to this!

I can't believe the cardinals weren't on there!  ;D

Maybe if they were still the Redmen...

for all you Trewick haters and bashers out there:

First of all, don't say trewick haters and bashers and then share an article about his cancer.  It really is too bad and I wish him the best of luck on the surgery he'll be having.  Secondly, Trewick is a great guy....GREAT guy, but he just isn't the best coach for Saint Mary's.

Great article and I wish him the best

con of north:
i will include tommy drake in that list any time; in fact, after madson and wittwer, he would be my next draft pick.
speaking of madson and wittwer, last night at robertson  could have been the last time these high school (and i have heard grade school) teammates would be playing against each other during their collegiate careers.  when you look at what trevor has done in his four years and timmy in his three, you have to wonder what type of high school team these guys had in redwood falls.  does anybody know?   a little screen roll action?   some oop dunking?   some slip and fade?   somebody send me some game film!
as for last night's game, gustavus was remarkable in their ability to perform basketball proctology on the royals.   it was hard to believe that i was watching the same gustie team that i saw play on saturday night at gus.
they were surgical in their offensive sets maxing out the shot clock numerous times, and when they shot a brick they somehow managed to offensive rebound time and again.  you never really got the feeling after the half that bethel could win, although madson's sweet fade away shooting exhibition over the top of kane sivesand during the middle of the second half kept them in the game.   the ability of so many gustie players to step up and hit shots and to appear confident in taking them was a noticeable difference between the two teams.  they won the game with wittwer only scoring six points until the game was essentially over.  and he is their best player!    mike moberg's first half was good, but he appeared to tire in the second and didn't finish the game playing strong around the hoop.   the rest of the royal's perimeter attack after madson was non-existent.   laugen and flannery are good players----they just couldn't get it going last night against a tougher defense.  (does anybody know what is wrong with eric hugoson?)
gustavus is going to be a good test for everyone the rest of the year, but like everyone else in this league, extremely beatable on any given night.   a healthy paulson could well be the key to how far this team goes.   his presence last night was much needed, and last saturday's loss to the dawgs may have been a result of his absence for most of that game.
let me lob a question out to anybody who has seen the gusties all year:  what is the deal with doble and why does he not play more?   somebody must have a pretty good answer for this.
and let's take it easy on some of these guys haircuts, drake.   their moms may read this crap.

I think the reason Doble doesn't play is because of the same reason Kaus doesn't play more.  At Gustavus, you're basically a robot in that offense and you don't get much freedom, especially if you're not one of Hanson's go-to-guys.  Watching gustavus play it always seems like if kaus--even though a good shooter-- misses a shot he gets taken out immediately, because Hanson simply wants a true point guard to run through the offense.

That situation is why I believe Kaus doesn't play more.  As far as Doble, I think it is something that relates to that, but I think it has to do a little more with forced shots. I think they both should be playing more.  I think Kaus is a much better all around player than Degrood, but I think Hanson favors Degrood, because he knows he's more of a true point and isn't going to take many--if any-- shots.

Interesting article from Winona...obviously given last nights performance they have not thrown in the towel on the season...

Given last nights performance?? Losing at home to a very sub-par team is not exactly what SMU probably had in mind.  As far as the whole throwing in the towel thing-- I wouldn't expect them to lay down and die any time soon.  I would hope they still play hard, which is something they did last night.

Willy- You are absolutely right...i had to check that out after your comment, story is getting a lot of hits.

An article about the Cormier situation that was published in the Winona Daily News.  Figured I'd post it and see what everyone thinks.

Completely agree....he is third in scoring and not only that, but he can defend and rebound.  One of the things I love about the way he plays is how he pushes the ball up the floor and gets to the hoop.  He is the best freshman, but I don't know if he'll get it due to the cards poor record.

P.s. I'm still waiting for a congrats on my 100th post.....anyone?  ;D

Niiiiiiice... but 200 posts indicates you might be around for awhile.  ;) +K

hahaa i'll be around.... i understand though, ill try for 200 by the end of the year

Yeah.... how bout that SMU MAC game? With a center scoring as much as he did, you would think it'd help to have some height in there.

Any talks for who gets freshman of the year? That kid from St Thomas could really play.

No doubt about it he is a good player...but also no doubt about it Will Wright is the most dominate freshman in the miac and it shows in the scoring leaders list i believe he is 3rd....he might not get it because of their poor record, but if it is given to the "BEST" freshman it is clearly Mr. Wright

It'll be interesting to see how the Cards match up with Conboy tonight.  With no post presence it'll be tough to defend him in a man to man... I would like to see them maybe front and have great backside help...otherwise go zone, but i don't see that happening

Skibbity - The new complex will be equipped to handle football, or no? That would seem the best way to forecast a football revival in SMU's future, despite it recently getting voted down.

Yes. It will be equipped to handle football, if football is something they decide to do down the road sometime.  Those familiar with the campus, the complex will be on the right, right as you turn on to campus.

Foye's playing!!!

Santana gone   :'(

Also, new track and soccer complex will be going up on SMU's campus this spring ready for the fall...turf infield...should be nice

So when is the Gaborik getting traded then?  We merely develop superstars, we don't selfishly keep them on our team.

If SMU is putting in a turf infield at a track/soccer complex, why in the world not add football?  Football couldn't hurt the basketball recruiting.

and....I've always disliked Ryan Lieser, but only due to an 8th grade fall basketball league grudge. >:(  Leisure and former johnnie punter Zach Reif were not well received for whatever reason.  that said, Lieser can't have done something as stupid as the star running back for sju did....I wish him a speedy return.  If it's as simple a thing as was already posted, why in the world was he not allowed to play?  If he did the internship, he should be able to appeal whatever suspension was put on him and allowed to play until it is proven he was in violation.

Football would do amazing things for the school, but unfortunately it won't be coming yet. I believe their plan is to make it so if they were to add a football team, it would be big enough for that as well....but that won't happen for awhile.
