Congrats to Coe on the W Saturday. You guys have a good team, now go out and take care of business the rest of the year, we will do the same and both be playing late into the season.

I agree with Old Dutch, game changing point was that long touchdown pass that the Coe defender made a heads up play on. I was really really really dissapointed with Centrals lack of tackling ability. I would have liked to see some more 5 6 man bitzes with a bit of press man coverage. The deep ball didnt beat us but the short stuff sure did!

Boyle is a solid QB, in a well designed system.

Central need to get back on their feet and take care of business. I have complete faith in the coaching staff there and we will end up 9-1. IF/when we do end up 9-1 it will be near impossible to keep us out of the playoffs. So Coe, dont lose.

W-CF Courier - 'bout time the Knights get top billing.

http://wcfcourier.com/sports/article_de251d88-c799-11df-ae26-001cc4c002e0.html

"What to watch: Wartburg will put its top-ranked Iowa Conference defense, led by linebacker Blake Suckow (20 solo, 14 assisted) back onto the field Saturday. The Knights are allowing just 256 yards (1st in IIAC), 66 rushing yards (1st) and 9.0 points (1st). Additionally, Wartburg has picked off six passes, recovered three fumbles and recorded 13 sacks in its first three games. "

From the paper thats located 10 minutes away... ;)

Not that the weathermen/women ever get it right, but early in the week I was hearing 75 and sunny, last I heard it was a prediction of 68 and rain for Saturday afternoon.  So will it be a good day to be a running team or a passing team?  Sounds like another day of going prepared for almost anything.  What's new?  Given the year, it will likely be rain.   :'(  But maybe that will be more pro-Central.   ???

What is it supposed to be like Saturday night at 7pm...in Dubuque...That is what I need to know ;)

I am just going to keep this weather info from my wife.  We will be in Iowa City on Saturday for the Hawkeye game.  If she knows it is supposed to rain I suspect she might start coming up with excuses to miss the game.  She likes going with me to football games, but I suspect her enthusiasm might wain if it is cool and rainy outside.  She already told me we can't do a Hawkeye/UD double header this weekend.  Something about being too tired the next day for church and sunday school ;)

Hmmm...football or church/sunday school...let me think about this one for a second...:)

Coe looked solid, lots of dink n dump passes picking up the yardage. Wasn't exactly impressed with Luther, but Ill reserve judgement until Saturday evening.

Well duhh ... CoeAthletics produced it.

Touche!

I did not see many routes run with the intention of getting behind the receivers.

If I were running the conference
I thought you were.  ;D

Just a quick question to satisfy my curiosity.  I know Central is the good and it looks like Wartburg is the bad but who are the ugly?

Not officially. ;)

On the shirt, its Simpson.

I don't know if Coe is going to have a big home field advantage. I'll bet Central brings more fans. ???

coocoo, are you showing up for this one?

I have to find out from Shrek if we play Iowa Falls Saturday or Sunday. Plus Shane's bachelor party Friday night, with a stop at Dancer's Ranch.  I'll be honest, it's not looking good.

I dont know about that, from what I hear, there will be quite a few Coe fans down for this one

As for Coe partnering with a local school for a stadium, CR Wash would be the nearest one. I doubt that would happen though, being a private college and public high school, as well as CR needing to spend money somewhere else, don't think there would be much public support to build. Especially considering the nice renovations to Kingston. There have been a few games at Coe since the field turf went in, but those have mainly been from smaller surrounding schools like Anamosa. The real problem with updating the field with visitor stands is how much of the "practice" field it would consume. There isn't a whole lot of room to throw permanent seating on the visitor side. Coe is in the latter stages of buying housing in the neighborhoods around Coe, which will open the school up for some much needed expansion. Possibly placing football/soccer practice fields somewhere away from the game fields, allowing for permanent visitor bleachers where the practice field currently is. They could then turn the practice fields, allowing for smaller/shorter Thursday/Friday practices.

Man, its been a long time since my last post, like a year... since I forgot to submit pick ems for the first 3 weeks, can i just start with a pefect record? I probably would be near that anways, I'll even take one loss.

Great thing about having a fieldturf game field is that you can practice on that...so why throw up some visiting stands.

Nvm...forgot Coe committed the ultimate sin....putting ugly yellow soccer stripes on a perfectly good football field!  >:(

As you mentioned, with the soccer lines come soccer games, can't practice when there is a game being played. It's also nice to have a grass field to practice on when you have to play on a grass field that week.

Central has probably one of the best football pracitce facilities in the conference. Fieldturf game field with lights, two regulation size grass practice fields, and a 3rd practice field that is probably 80yds square. Those grass fields are immaculately kept as well, I talked with a former QB at Coe who worked a camp at Central a few years back, he said the pracitice fields there were in much better shape than Coes game field.

The inaugural PAC-MAC Challenge, slating western Pennsylvania teams agains eastern Pennsylvania teams in non-conference play, seemed to be a hit.

http://www.d3football.com/columns/around-the-region/east/2010/mac-lives-up-to-challenge

How about a CCIW-IIAC Challenge?  (We could match numbers by exempting Buena Vista on the basis of travel distance, just as the PAC exempted Thomas More.)  We could settle this conference ranking thing on the field.

Take the last say 5 years, average the teams placing in the conference...and match em up, 1 v 1, 2 v 2 and so on. It wouldnt have a huge impact on playoffs because CCIW is a North region and we are West. Im all for it!

I can't comment on Cornell's performance vs Wartburg but I will say something about the weight room comment. The couple of times that I made it to Mount Vernon this past Spring, I saw a large group of football players working out with the strength coach. They might have some small guys but they have some big boys as well. Most of those players have worked hard to improve their strength and conditioning. I talked with Coach B this summer and he commented on the improved strength he saw after Coach Frey was hired on at Cornell. One thing he didn't see was much improvement in foot speed. That's something that he wanted to change in their workouts.

Cornell's student population (and football team) reflects a whole lot less local kids compared to most other IIAC.  Some kids do elect to go home for the Summer.  A lot larger number stays than is assumed however and CaliRam is correct, Cornell has some large kids (Our biggest is 6'7" 310 - that's down from a soft 325 last year).  They have several smaller newcomers but if they take advantage, Coach Frey will develop them.

I need cite only one example...Heys Jr. entered school at 195 lbs. as a freshman, he was 235 as a soph., 245 as a junior, 255 as a senior.  He stayed his Summers there and I know they had a large contingent this past Summer.  I'd like to think that last year's seniors set that example and that this year's senior pass that along.

Coach Frey is a valuable asset, he comes from the Central strength and conditioning program after all ;)

Just got done watching the Central/Simpson JV game.  Central won 42-15.  We have some GREAT young talent coming up including a couple of very fine QBs with good throwing arms, good receivers who can make things happen, a good running back wearing #8 (imagine that) and of course some good linemen including offensive lineman AZ Jr.  In fact, one of the FR QBs is also from AZ.

Saw some of the strangest plays I have ever seen at a FB game.  Of course all of them were in Central's favor.  :)  I will say, Central plays athletes other than just FR because there are a lot of talented players that don't get Saturday playing time.  One of those athletes happens to be Ethan Miller, who finished in the top 10 in the decathalon at the NCAA championships.  Just before half, Simpson was going to kick a
FG and Central blocked it.  Ethan Miller came up with it, and if I remember it correctly, he ran all the way to the left sideline, ran out of room and changed direction, going all the way to the right sideline, ran out of real estate, reversed yet again and when he approached the sideline for the third time turned on the jets and finally turned the corner, taking it all the way in for a TD.  I've never seen anything like it, sure wish they would put that on the highlights video, even if it is from a JV game.

Then, on a Simpson pass, a Central player was trying for the pick, but the ball bounced off the center of his back in his diving attempt to catch it.  The astute player flipped over and up to catch the ball before it hit the ground for an INT.  Fluky, but fun, fun, fun plays to watch.

Central has lots of young talent to fill future holes.

Of course, Simpson is likely to be a great challenge.

Central plays about a 7 or 8 game JV schedule per year, its not like you can have a whole lot of choices in who you play, so you take what you get. If memory serves me right they haven't lost many JV games in the last year or two, for what thats worth. Gotta get the young guys real game experience so they are ready to step in to varsity roles in the future!

Where are the Kohawk faithful!?

2006               Central             31-28 (OT)
2007               Central             24-17
2008               Central             27-10
2009               Central             24-6

The disparity in scores keeps growing 3, 7, 17, 18 point wins since the last loss in 2005, which was a 3 point loss. Almost had the comeback, down 17-0, lost 17-14 and we were moving the ball at the end of the game into Coe territory.

Should be a fun game, watched Coe vs some no name NAIA school highlights, they run a very methodical offense, find the holes, make the plays. Cant wait!

Go Dutch!
