Bethel is on the ropes v. Central. Unfortunately for Wheaton, their announcers are pretty sure the same result will occur next week. Dutch color guy at least is confident you are not the a top 3 team in D3. Use that motivation as you will.  :)

Oh, those guys. The same announcers that, while the game was still relatively close, were whining that Bethel was committing a penalty and were begging for a flag on what seemed like about every other offensive play that Central ran.

I should probably just keep quiet, but I'm a radio guy and we don't do well with keeping quiet.  We "whined" for one very obvious missed defensive holding / PI penalty on a seem route in the first half.  That's it.  Our fans wanted a flag on Bethel on seemingly every play, and if you were paying attention, we specifically commented on how off-base that was.

And my color guy has NCC, UMHB, Linfield as his personal top 3.  I think he has Wheaton 5th?  Not exactly bulletin board material.  They're a great team who stuck it to us in 2019 and we have given them plenty of love.  It's going to be a massive challenge next Saturday.

Thanks to all the Bethel fans for listening.  You've got a great team and will be a force to be reckoned with in 2022 with all the talent set to come back.

Can't wait for another year of IIAC football to get going.  Central offense promises to be explosive again this year.  Can they avoid critical turnovers in the big games?  Can the defense stop the big play?  Those will be the two keys all year to Dutch success.

With our weekly show with Coach McMartin, we've added in Facebook Live.  This first week was a bit sketchy as we had some technical issues with the video so it was shot off a phone and the audio isn't great.

Here is the link to the Central College Dutch Facebook if you want to check it out (scroll down for a couple of videos) -

https://www.facebook.com/CentralCollegeDutch/?ref=br_rs

We'll be doing Facebook Live at 7pm every Monday (except when there is no school (like Labor Day), as it will be pre-recorded), so when it's live we'd love to have you join in and will ask questions from viewers.  Should be fun and interactive!

Also - I know there are a few listeners on this board (and we greatly appreciate you listening and your feedback) - we recorded a new Castle and the Coach Podcast today.  IIAC talk starts around the 1 hour mark.

Sure sign of the apocalypse.  Central Dutch half time show is sponsored by a brewery.
I was in town for homecoming and picked up two six packs of Peace Tree Brewing's product and patronized the Royal Amsterdam all in appreciation for their sponsorship of Central sports broadcasts.

Fann - thanks for supporting the businesses that support our coverage of Dutch athletics.  It's greatly appreciated by all involved!!

I wonder when was the last time, during conference play, that Central/Coe/Wartburg all lost on the same weekend???

I can only (easily) get data back from 2001 on the Iowa Conference website.  Coe joined the IIAC in 1997, so that leaves a 4 year gap.

Since 2001 -

Central, Wartburg and Coe had never lost IIAC games on the same weekend until Saturday.

Take Coe out of the equation - and this was only the 3rd time that both Central and Wartburg had each lost on the same IIAC Saturday (once in 2008 and once in 2011)

Those "stats" wouldn't change much if I took the time to fill the 4 year gap.  Central went unbeaten in 1998 and 2000, and in 1999, their lone league loss was to Wartburg.  1997 is in question.  Central lost one league game, to Simpson, on October 18th.  So if Wartburg (and Coe) lost that weekend, it could add to the list.

D3football.com has results going back to 1999.

http://www.d3football.com/conf/IIAC/2000/schedule
http://www.d3football.com/conf/IIAC/1999/schedule

And if my memory is correct, Coe joined the conference in 1997, but their 1st football season was 1998.

Good memory - Central didn't play either Coe or Cornell in 1997, and then had a full 10 game IIAC slate starting in 1998.

So, yes, officially, this past Saturday was the first time in IIAC history that Central, Wartburg and Coe all lost on the same day.  By my count - 156 weeks of IIAC play.

Simpson steals radio station away from Central!!!

https://twitter.com/StormSports/status/639571828759994368

Would love to get the low down on this story.  This could cause some acrimony  ;)

Not a theft - sharing!

Central football will remain on 92.1 KRLS, our KRLS stream at www.kniakrls.com and the KRLS mobile app.  I'm excited to be back for my 15th season on the mic for the Dutch.

Simpson football can be heard on AM 1320 / FM 95.3 KNIA, our KNIA stream at www.kniakrls.com and the KNIA mobile app.  Long-time Indianola resident Rick Wilson has joined our team to call the games for the Storm.
What a relief.  The prospect of a football season without "The Voice of The Dutch," was just too depressing.  As for loathsome Simpson and where they get their radio, meh.  Actually the few times I ever listened to any of their broadcasts, it sounded like they let students do it and, much as it pains me to say anything positive about Simpson, they weren't bad.

Thanks for the kind words Fannosaurus!  I can't wait for tomorrow night to get it going.

We are excited to grow our promotion and coverage of small college football.  Regarding coverage of Simpson, I get it that Central fans could take or leave what happens to the Storm (and generally prefer to leave it!).  Rick Wilson will do a great job, and while some of the students have been good at Simpson, it will be nice for them to have a consistent voice for fans to listen to.

Also, I might be getting soft as I get a little bit older, but when you bleed Central red like many of us do, you're trained to hate the enemy, and Simpson is certainly one of those.  But the little bit of time that I've gotten to spend with Coach Glo and Bryan Geelan (their SID), they're really good people over at Simpson, too.  That doesn't mean I'm not going to be pulling for a Dutch route on Halloween - but the other 9 weeks, we can all play nice!!

Does Central archive their coaches show?  I will be at swim team and dance lessons tonight and won't get to listen live.

Yes, we do.  Go to rdo.to/krls - click on the "menu" button, then "on-demand".  It should be posted later tonight, takes a little while to archive after we wrap up at 7:30.

Congrats to Dubuque on yesterday's victory, the Spartans are a damn good football team, and so is Central.

It was interesting to see the adjustments that each team made to take away the others strengths.  Dubuque brought a lot of pressure from many different places, and that really slowed down the Central run game.  I'm not sure if they were bringing more guys than Central could block, or if there was confusion on the O-Line (probably both, at different times) but Spartan defenders were shooting through the gaps and making plays.  Central played its corners way off the line (which they also did last week against Albion), which allowed Dubuque to convert on short pass after short pass, but also put them in the best position to defend against the deep pass.  As Coach Z promised, Dubuque took plenty of deep shots, early and often, but the Dutch were always in position to make the play.

Anyone who listened to the game on the radio could certainly sense my frustration about the game from Central's perspective.  Because of the pressure that Dubuque was bringing, there were Central receivers open, and Eisler was finding them.  Through the middle of the third quarter, he had seven incomplete passes.  One of them was the pick-6 (absolutely horrible read / throw), but of the other six, FIVE were drops by Central receivers, including 2 that would have converted third downs and one that would have been a walk-in touchdown after a blown coverage early in the third.  Those mistakes alone are enough to lose you a ballgame against a good team like Dubuque, but throw in the 3-0 turnover margin and the inexcusable penalties (the 3rd and 15 stop = unsportsmanlike conduct being the most ill-timed), and I'm surprised that Central was even in the game at the end.

Regarding the fumble, the visting broadcast booth is at the 40 yard line on the side of the field that that play took place on, so we were right down the line.  I'll stand by my opinion that it was NOT a fumble, but I only saw it the one time, in live action.  The defender did a great job going from the strip, but Eisler held on tight, and the act of the defender trying to strip the ball from him twisted him around, and it looked to me like he hit down and then the ball popped out.

In the end, the only thing that matters is Dubuque 23 - Central 21.  Central could definitely be 4-0, but they're not.  They've got to sharpen up some the mistakes / turnovers / dumb penalties and gear up for another tough road game at Simpson Saturday!

I think you've nailed the West Region spot on.  That's going to be the 6-team region, and those will be the 6 teams.  What a loaded regional!!!

My prediction - IIAC gets 4.  Luther as AQ, Central and Coe are locks as at-large, and I think Simpson squeaks in on the bubble.

Excited for the announcement tomorrow to see who they're bringing to Pella this weekend!

Nice article about Trevor Castle, "The Voice Of The Dutch" on the Central Athletics web site.  Didn't he used to post on here?  Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing plenty of, "Castle’s rumbling “TOUCH-dowwwnnn Central!” tomorrow.

Thanks for the kind words and especially to Larry Happel for putting that article together.

I wish I could take time to post more - life's just a little hectic with two little ones growing up way to fast.

Thank goodness for those 4 first-half TOUCH-dowwwnn Central calls this afternoon!!!  We needed 'em to hang on for dear life, and great job to the D for the 6 turnovers and that big last second stand.  Congrats to the seniors and the rest of the squad for making it 52 straight years without a losing season!  Let's make it a winning season next weekend!!

No doubt -- we do have video of that one, by the way:

How could that NOT be play of the week?  The Dubuque tip + pick + 6 was pretty sweet, but that Augusburg game winner was incredible.

Tough start for Central, obviously.  Really came down to the turnovers.  Two special teams fumbles and three interceptions - I know it's cliche, but you aren't going to win many games when you turn it over 5 times.

Other than the turnovers, I was impressed with the Central offense.  They're not going to line it up and run it right at you with their running back(s), but the line did a good enough job creating some room, and protected pretty well for Nate.  The game plan was solid, getting the ball out of his hands quickly and into the hands of their tall, playmaking receivers.

On defense, we really need to shore things up on the back end.  Three really long pass plays were the killer on defense.  Other than those three plays, our defense played really well I thought.  We defended the run well, and kept the short passes in front of us, preventing the short play from beginning a big play.  Now - it's just preventing those long passes from becoming big plays too!!

Coach Mac and his staff will have these boys ready to go next week - I'm excited for the home opener against Auggie!

Sorry for what is a little bit of a spammy post - but thought at least the Central College fans would find this of interest.

I enjoyed the broadcast, thank you very much.  Coach McMartin's enthusiasm has me pumped up for the season to start.  I will try to patronize the sponsors when I am out for homecoming.  In fact when I stop in IntVelt's for a couple of rings of bologna do you want me to ask why they didn't advertise?

As you guys probably all know - that's the circle that makes stuff like coverage of division 3 football go around (supporting the sponsors of local radio stations, this website, etc), and that's all appreciated.  However, IntVeld's must be doing it backward.  You spent so much money there in the past that they are advertising during the games this fall!!!

Sorry for what is a little bit of a spammy post - but thought at least the Central College fans would find this of interest.

We're kicking off a new radio show tonight in Pella called the Central College Coaches Corner on 92.1 KRLS and www.kniakrls.com.  It'll be live at Applebee's every Monday night from 7:00-7:30 pm, starting tonight, with Jeff McMartin joining us live.  Applebee's is doing some nice food and drink specials, and we'll be giving away some dinners for two as well.

You can ask questions live at the restaurant, or you can email in questions at trevorcastle@kniakrls.com.

Hope you guys enjoy the new show and our expanded coverage of the Dutch!

Great show! You covered a lot of bases. It's great to hear Coach McMartin again!
Curious? What happened to taking questions from the on line listeners? I didn't hear one?

AZ -

Sorry - I did get your email, but I am on vacation this week.  I was swimming the kids up until the show started, and forwarded your questions on to Eric, who was hosting the show in my absence.  Unfortunately - he left his phone on silent and didn't see my email.  I'll make sure that we get your questions answered in the future :)
