Congratulations to Kevin Burke for winning the Ghoulardi trophy.  It's only fitting that a boy from Cleveland should win a trophy named after a Cleveland icon.

Haha, I love it! I had to read it twice before I got it. "Hey Group!"

Mount Union practiced today at Massillon's indoor facility

Why does it not surprise me that Massillon has an indoor practice facility? My mom's family all graduated from Canton McKinley, so I grew up watching Tigermania first-hand.

I don't think I've ever seen one individual on a college football team that plays at a championship level that makes such a difference to the outcome of a game as Kevin Burke. Even when Nate Kmich was racking up 200 yards a game, he still had other stars around him making big plays. But Burke... holy cow! He is the primary reason Mount is headed to the Stagg Bowl.

The other is if someone believes that video would be glaringly harmful to attendance.  From Mt. Union's perspective, could they believe their long success has jaded fans so much that they assume the team will win, so why show up to see another lopsided game when one could stay home and watch, or check in occasionally?  This one makes some warped sense to me--however, also unfortunate if that is the case.

I think this is the same logic as the "local blackout" rule they have in the NFL (is that still in place?). If the capability to block streaming video to those within x miles of the game was possible, then I would think that it may be more likely that more streaming would take place.

Living in Columbus, Ohio with lots of family commitments on the weekends, it is very difficult for me to get to a game. However, I would gladly pay a per view or per season subscription to watch online. I listen to the audio streams for many games and usually all of the playoff games.

2013 Gagliardi Trophy Finalists
•   Kevin Burke, quarterback - Mount Union
•   Graham Craig, quarterback - LaGrange (Ga.)
•   Austin Damaschke, quarterback - Concordia (Wis.)
•   McCallum Foote, quarterback - Middlebury (Vt.)
•   Cole Klotz, linebacker - Wisconsin-Whitewater
•   Kyle Linville, wide receiver - Franklin (Ind.)
•   Octavias McKoy, running back - Western Connecticut State
•   Adham Talaat, defensive end - Gallaudet (D.C.)
•   Keith Welch, quarterback - Lewis & Clark (Ore.)
•   Erik Westerberg, linebacker - Augustana (Ill.)

I think Burke has a decent chance.

McKoy has to be considered a favorite. His resume' looks pretty darn good!

I just ran across a great article about Larry Kehres where Larry shared what he misses about coaching and what he valued as a coach.

I found it to be a great read.

http://www.ohio.com/blogs/marla/marla-ridenour-on-sports-1.284882/tips-for-prospective-coaches-from-mount-union-s-larry-kehres-1.446842

Great article! "Kehres said when his teams lost in the championship in 2009, '10 and '11 he took over the play-calling duties for his final season in 2012. "I didn't want to leave one thing undone. They'd put tremendous pressure on themselves. They didn't want to be a group that left without accomplishing their goal."

Or, you could read it as "If you want it done right, do it yourself!"

I knew this wasn't the most loaded Mount team ever, but after looking at the All-OAC team 2 thoughts come to mind:

1.  The selections are a joke with all the "co-winners" and too many players at one position like 3 RB's, 5 DL's and 5 LB's on the 1st team.  2nd team is even worse with 5 WR's.

2.  Mount is lucky to have won the conference ;)

Looking at the OAC Regulations on their website, General Regulation Article 2 - All-AOC Teams lists for Football:

Starters per Team: 25
OAC Teams: 10
Starters in OAC: 250
35% of Starters: 87
Maximum Outcomes: 15 1st Team and 15 2nd Team each for Offense and Defense, plus 20 Honorable Mention (total: 80)

2013 Results:
1st Team Offense: 15
1st Team Defense: 16
2nd Team Offense: 17
2nd Team Defense: 16
Honorable Mention: 20
Total: 84

So they went over the Maximum Output according to the Regulations by 4. However, they were 3 under the 35% of starters in OAC. I have no idea if there were ties along the way that resulted in being over the maximum output. I can't find any rules listed on how the voting works. This is just what is posted on the website.

Also, I noticed that for Honorable Mention, each school has exactly 2 players each. I guess when each team submits their nominations for All-OAC, maybe they rank them? Then the committee must take the 2 highest ranked players from each school that didn't make 1st or 2nd team and put them on the Honorable Mention list (?). Does anyone know for sure how any of this works?

Wow, exciting game! Congratulations to both teams for a hard fought game. JCU never gave up and battled right to the very end. They should do well in the playoffs. Can't wait to watch the replay tonight on STO. My heart was racing so fast during that final JCU drive! Good luck Mount in the playoffs!

Speaking of can't wait to see replays - I'm looking forward to see the rebroadcast tonight to see the 34 yard TD pass just now to Gainer from Burke. It sounded spectacular on the radio! 28-10 Mount. JCU has to be shocked that they've given up so many points in just one half.

The radio announcers just said that the refs are so favorable with their spots that it looks like the teams get an extra yard each play. Sounds like all of the comments about the low quality of OAC refs will continue.

TD Mount! Nice initial drive. Let's keep it going!

Was looking over some of the defensive # for JCU and it's quite impressive.
#1 in total defense (190 yds)
#1 in pass efficiency defense (62.95 rating)
#2 in pass defense (97.3 yds)
#14 in rushing defense (93.6 yds)
#1 in scoring defense (3.7 pts)
#1 in 3rd down conversion defense (20.3%)

Which makes some great contrasts to Mount Union's offense:
#2 in total offense (545 yds)
#1 in pass efficiency offense (188.78 rating)
#55 in pass offense (250 yds)
#8 in rushing offense (294 yds)
#2 in scoring offense (50.1 pts)
#1 in 3rd down conversion offense (63.6%)

Especially the huge difference in 3rd down conversion rates.   Other than turnovers, the game is likely decided right there. Should be a classic.

Wow! Thanks for the stats. Something's going to have to give. The game could ultimately be decided on a single play caused by perhaps a blown assignment, a wrong route, or just a freak bounce of the ball. When you look at these numbers, it points to a real slugfest!

In the podcast, I laughed when I heard Pat's comment about "it's hard to recruit a punter to Mount Union because what does a punter get to do" there? I never really thought about it but he's right. It's not like he's going to be playing Tressel-ball and keep playing for position by pinning the opponent inside the 10 all day.

From ESPN looking at 10 things learned from Redskins/Chargers game:
9.Garcon was a beast all day and finished with seven catches for 172 yards. His blocking was good, but his hands were fantastic and he made plays downfield for a change. He made another one-handed grab while covered by corner Derek Cox and then caught a pass behind him while going to the ground on a dig route. Griffin has two targets that he can trust to catch the ball as long as it's near them: Garcon and Reed. No one has been more frustrated the past several weeks than Garcon. But nobody plays harder all game than this guy.

I told my nephew when PG got drafted that it wasn't his big catches and speed (almost all WRs have that) - it was his blocking and drive on EVERY PLAY that made him stand out and worth a shot.

This morning on either the NFL channel or ESPN Sportscenter (I forget which), when they were showing Pierre's one-handed grab from yesterday's game, one commentator said "Pierre Garcon went to Mount Union. They had a big game yesterday". Commentator 2: "Did they win?" Commentator 3: "Yes... they always win." I love it!

There are 2 interviews up on STO's website. One from today with Larry Kehres. The other from yesterday with Kevin Burke. Haven't watched the KB video yet, but the LK interview is wonderful! So many great quotes.

http://www.sportstimeohio.com/video

Enjoy!

+K for you! I, as always, must be honest: I hate Bruce Drennan. To me he is fingernails on the chalkboard - Dick Vitale with a megaphone! However, the interview with Burke is good. Kevin seems like a very respectful, down to earth kid that wants to work on......#12! I like how he said, when asked about the seniors leaving, "it's a hole to fill, but at Mount that's what we do". Very good indeed. The LK interview is really good as well - and thank god Bruce didn't do the interview.

All right then - I am signing off permanently now. With the world ending tomorrow I just wanted to say that the last few years on this site have been great - all the insight and bantering on D3 football and especially THE MOUNT! I will see you all on the other side. Damn Mayans! 8-)

desertraider, I agree with you. I can't stand watching (and especially listening to) Bruce Drennan. I had gotten a post on Facebook from Mount Union that the interview was going to be on his show today. I had the show on but on mute. After an hour I had to leave home and the interview hadn't been aired yet, so I figured it would eventually post on STO's website.

Merry Christmas to all!
