looks like you had access to video of the Wheaton bench during the game.  Any chance you caught Coach Schaurer after Nate Haynes got the dunk at their end late in the second half?  The video will speak for itself if you have it.

Ron Rose and the Titans have landed 6-1 G Jordan Nelson, a Division I transfer from Evansville.  Nelson will be a junior at IWU in 2013-14.

As a senior at Lincoln H.S. in 2010-11, Nelson averaged 21.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists.  He was a prolific 3-point shooter, making 111 as a senior, and 346 in his HS career (at a 40% rate).   Nelson's 346 ranks 6th all-time in IHSA history.  Nelson was a named 3A/4A 2nd Team all-state by the IBCA, 3A 2nd Team by AP, and 3A/4A 1st Team by Illinois Basketball Services.  He was named "Player of the Year" by the Bloomington Pantagraph, Springfield State Journal Register, and Lincoln Courier.  Nelson was also a standout golfer, finishing second in the IHSA state tournament his junior year, and baseball player.

Nelson was used as a reserve guard this past season at Evansville.  He played in 27 games, averaged 8 minutes per game, connecting on 13 of 38 3-point attempts.  Nelson played a key role in Evansville's win at Final Four team Wichita State on February 27, playing 17 minutes, including being on the floor down the stretch.  His best game was in a March 2 win against Indiana State, when he had 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists ( 16 minutes, 4-5 FG).

Nelson is known first for his ability to shoot the basketball.  He was regarded by many as the best shooter in the state in 2010-11, with 3-point range extending well beyond the arc.  In February 2011, high school evaluator Joe Henricksen said, "The reason Nelson is a Division I player is that he offers up a bonafide Division I ability: shooting the basketball. His shot is pure, and it's a jump shot from 15 feet, 20 feet and 25 feet, with the mechanics and textbook release that is the calling card for every great shooter."  To put Nelson's 2010-11 single season total of 111 3-pointers and career total of 346 into a little perspective, IWU's single season and career 3-point FG record holder is Jordan Zimmer with 107 and 264 respectively.

Nelson, a combo guard, is also a good penetrator who can score off dribble-drive with either hand around the basket.  He is a good ball-handler in the open court and, while he probably couldn't play PG in the Missouri Valley, he should be very effective in that role, if needed, at the Division III level.

Ron Rose recruited Nelson aggressively when he was a senior at Lincoln, but it never seemed very realistic for IWU to land him at the time.  He had several Division II scholarship offers early, and a lot of Division I interest up to the mid-major level.  After his senior season ended, in addition to the D2 offers, Nelson had some low D1 offers and interest from several mid-majors.   Evansville from the Missouri Valley offered in April and he signed there.

Nelson has picked Illinois Wesleyan over D1 scholarship offers to Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville, and Houston Baptist, and a host of Division II offers.  He should be a good player at IWU and a big part of the backcourt rotation the next two years.

First let me say, I know IWU can win tonight, and I think they will. But I also know that it might not go that way.
Either way, I won't use the fact that the court's setup is not in line with all the other courts that teams in the NCCA play on, as an excuse for not winning.
The fact that there has not been an argument from any NCC posters, prove that indeed the layout does not fit into the guidelines in which the court should be laid out. Would the NCCA do anything if the rims were only 9ft. 10 in.

My issue isn't with NCC, it's more with the NCCA. They write rule books bigger than most novels. The NCCA has a rule about everything. They make it a point to let the host school know  that they are in charge, it's their gym.

I just don't think the NCCA really cares. The D-3 tourney cost them money, but they should still make sure that all schools that wish to host an event has a court that is set up like it is supposed to be. What they are saying is, some rules do not matter, and that's not right.

NCC deserves to host, no argument here on that, but if they want to host, they should get their gym set up like it says in the rule book. They have a good program going now, maybe they like it different from all the rest of the courts, maybe they like the advantage of the other team not being used to all the extra room behind the backboard, but just maybe they shouldn't be able to host a NCCA tourney either.

Looking toward to watching the game tonight, I'm betting the players couldn't care less about the gym or the seating. These two teams just like banging on each other.
i have a good friend who has a saying that I think applies here..."Let it go, nuts!"

Actually, just make that terrible.  The Wash U color guy is terrible.

Was coming here to say this.  At first I was thinking he came from the Ron Santo school of color commentary, but it's not even amusing.  Just bad.
the play by play guy is very good, but I will take a college kid who doesn't know what he is doing over this idiot any day...

IWU coming out with thuggish tactics seemingly trying to start a fight.  I wonder if that was the instructions from the coach or showing off in front of the football team.  The IWU coach was obviously ok with it as he didn't tell his team to stop. Very unsportsmanlike childish behavior not advantageous to the D3 philosophy.
Thunder you are whining as much as Teuscher is, grow up its the CCIW
There is no excuse for that behavior.  Wheaton would pull players for acting like that. It has nothing to do with the CCIW.  As a matter of fact most coaches do not put up with such nonsense.  Thats the behavior that is exactly wrong with professional sports today.  The CCIW has a great record of sportsmanship but the first few minutes of this game were some of the worst sportsmanship I have seen in any CCIW sport I have watched.  Its nothing to be proud of.
Thunder then how would u respond to one of your choir boys (Peters) saying and I quote"How's that bitch" to Overstreet as they go to a time out?

Before I am dismissed as totally crazy, let me say that IWU will be the underdog in every game right from game one.  Nevertheless:

How IWU COULD make it to Salem:

Game one (neutral court) vs. UWRF.  The Falcons are the favorites, but have lost 5 of their last 6 games.  Player by player I just don't see it.  I will be VERY disappointed if the Titans don't win this one.

Game two (Northwestern or St. Thomas, but Northwestern is perhaps a 1 in 1000 chance).  Tommies will be a HUGE favorite, but looking at the matchups, I like our chances.  I've thought all year the Toms were over-ranked (though deservedly above IWU), but looking at the player-by-player matchups and the game styles, I like our chances.  IF we upset St. Thomas:

Game three (probably AT UWSP).  This is where I predict the postseason ride ends, BUT ... both the teams I've already said IWU could beat have beaten them.  My d3hoops.com bracket pick is that UWSP wins it all, but both UWRF and St. Thomas have already beaten them, so why not IWU??! ;)  Looking player-by-player, I don't see any compelling disadvantages (and some advantages), so if the Titans play at their maximum as a TEAM, I think it is potentially winnable.

Game four: this would presumably be either Augie or a team lesser than Augie that got hot - and we already beat Augie (admittedly one of three times, but therefore it CAN happen ;)).

VOILA - Salem is highly unlikely, but it COULD happen! :D

Certainly could be debated, but I contend there were 9 times this year that "player-by-player" IWU was the favorite going into their game, but it didn't work out that way.

How did a kid named "Wade Chitwood" from Grinnell, IA get away from his hometown college??

Interesting that it doesn't appear that there is a clear "star" player among the four teams.  At least when you look at scoring averages, each team seems to be successful because of a breadth of talent vs a stud.

It would be fun to see what the full rosters are projecting to look like, but one thing that seems likely is that there should be a full contingent of JV games being played this year.  There were a number of times last year where it seemed like a couple of injuries eliminated JV teams for schools.

The new problem may be getting enough minutes for everyone during JV games and figurig out when to play them.

I'm concerned with IWU's height in the post.  Point can do a good job of defending the post by playing team defense.  In the WIAC tourney title game, Point doubled, and sometimes tripled, Dustin Mitchell in the post.  I think he may have had just 5 field goal attempts or so.  The key may be IWU's guards and I'm guessing Sean Johnson would be the key there.  They'll have to make the buckets if the post is defended well.

As has been the case since the departure of Kalsow, Point is a perimeter oriented team.  They may have some "thick" guys, but no one really ever posts up, except from Matt Moses.  If there is a "go to guy," it's been Moses lately.  It's going to be a tight game, for sure.

Yes, when I think of facing the WIAC in the tournament, I think of that Eau Claire team that dismantled Carthage in 2000 with all that size...or Oshkosh from 2002-03 with those two stud big guys...or the Stevens Point national championship teams (2004, 2005) with all of their great size.  (And of course, Bo Ryan's national championship teams.)  This UW-Stevens Point team is not the typical WIAC team I think of with tons of size in the low post.  The Pointers are definitely an outside/in team.

I honestly think the two teams are dead even on paper.

A key player tonight for IWU - Jordan Zimmer.

Just to clear up a little controversy from the second half last night...a quote from the Kenosha News

"After Djurickovic banked in a 3-pointer to cut it to 75-72 with eight seconds left, Johnson sealed the deal with two free throws with seven seconds on the clock."

As far as whether either has a legitimate Pool C chance, I think it's fair to say either would be "on the bubble."  Both would have to hope for very few upsets across the country (where current Pool A teams fall in conference tournament games and steal Pool C bids).  But I do think IWU would have a much better Pool C case, with a .731 in-region record.  Wheaton's .692 would put the Thunder in position to get in as, like, Pool C #19 of 19.  Both would go in with some good wins over other regionally ranked teams (and that is one of the 5 criteria), which would help.

Again, bottom line, Friday is an elimination game.

Current DIII Bracketology projections have both Wheaton and Illinois Wesleyan earning Pool C bids. Remember however, that that doesn't predict upsets in conference tournaments and if too many of those projected Pool A's take Pool C bids then some teams will get squeezed out.  See sig for link.

History tells us that it's inevitable that a certain number of regular-season champions will stumble in their respective league tourneys, so Bob's conclusion that Wheaton and Illinois Wesleyan are riding the bubble at this point -- and that Friday night's showdown between the two in the Toolshed is a win-or-your-season's-over game -- is pretty sound.

Your history lesson is accurate, but needs one little addition that I think makes a difference.  The regular season champion that stumbles must themselves, be a higher Pool C candidate than the CCIW teams.  A regular season champ with poor Pool C credentials who stumbles means nothing to the bigger picture.  That conference just gets one team in regardless of upsets.
