I'm hesitant on UWW, even with the drubbing of UWSP this past Friday. They still have an absolute gauntlet to get through. At Platteville, HC vs. River Falls, and at La Crosse. The parity in the conference this year is incredible. The key, however, is what will the voters think, and what will the new metrics say about a tough conference beating up on itself. I think the path to getting 3 in is most definitely there. The crucial thing to note is what three teams could get in will change each and every week. I would also say that there might be a very remote outside chance we get four, but that would require a little chaos across the division.

General Division III issues / Re: Future of Division III
September 10, 2024, 05:07:29 PM
I totally get the needing to cut funds, I'm just afraid of when schools cut music because, especially at the High School level, these programs get cut for the sake of athletics (such as at my school, support for music is nil at this point). Also, in the case of Wittenberg, I did want to look at where they are in terms of proximity to other music schools, and it seems like they might get "the rest" of the kids who didn't make it into Ohio State or nearby Dayton, and they aren't good enough to get the students that went to the Oberlin Conservatory (may not be great at football, but damn fine music school). I know we're trying to keep schools from closing and I'd rather not cut music programs, but therein lies the problem. No money, no program, and even worse, no money, no school at all.
Again, please forgive my defensiveness. I may not be using my degree like I wanted to (I now work in Hotel Management but I do still play from time to time, including once a year at Whitewater for the Alumni Band), but that doesn't mean there is no value to the education I received (nor do I think anyone here is trying to diminish music schools in general). It was just a knee jerk reaction, and I apologize for it.

For any school with a good music program, they are going to have quite a few courses. Each ensemble they offer has to have their own designation, and yes, each instrument has to have their own applied lesson. Each instrument is a different discipline taught by different instructors. Again, going back to the ensembles, it's not like you can fit every single wind player into one ensemble. You'd have to have more than one including the advanced ensemble (Wind Ensemble in most cases), maybe an intermediate ensemble, and a generic "everyone can play" ensemble (usually Concert Band), and yes, Marching Band has to have it's own class more often than not, especially at the D3 level. You could drop everything down to just one ensemble, but then how do you retain the music students who need/want more of a challenge? Chances are that Wittenberg has that many courses because they have a good and well established program that brings in money just like other majors do (if not more with the different fees.
Sorry to get a little defensive here (as a music grad myself at Whitewater), but I keep hearing from people that music programs need to be cut for one reason or another. My question is if we just teach the main technical courses and grind people to just join the workforce, where do we get our culture from? Where do we teach students how to be human rather than just be a mindless drone? The arts. The arts are your answer in that regard.

Yeah, I haven't been too terribly impressed with Roosevelt (formerly Robert Morris). From what I could tell, they were middle of the pack in the MSFA Midwest Division. Not terrible, but not incredibly great. Not sure what D2 or the GLIAC will do to them, but I imagine a trip for them to Whitewater or for us to Chicago would end in a dub for the dubs.

Not even a rabbit hole at all! I have been following pretty much all of college football since 2016 when I started trying to make a new ratings system (out of boredom), so I'm familiar with the school and how they've done over the past couple of years. Which NAIA school did we match up with?

Man, wish I didn't have trivia tonight so I could be there!
If I had to speculate, based on the schedules that have already been released, I'm guessing they'll want to stay GLIAC, and that likely means a game against the Panthers of Davenport University. They started their football program in the NAIA in 2016 (give or take a year, can't remember what year exactly), and after a year or two playing in the Mid-States Football Association, they moved up to Division 2 and the GLIAC. They are a solid #3 in said conference, behind Ferris and Grand Valley of course. One of these years, they're going to break through and make a playoff.
Excited to see what the Hawks have to offer this season!

Great win for the Hawks today, and on to Wheaton! Should be a home game, but we won't find out until either tonight or tomorrow.
Speaking of tomorrow, the Warhawks will be on the road, but I'm not talking about the football team. The Marching Band will be playing at Lambeau Field for tomorrow's Packer game, and I know I and several other alumni are heading up to support our band! If any of you will be there tomorrow, I hope to see you there. I thought about wearing purple, but if I still have my Jake Kumerow jersey, I will be wearing that.
On to the second round, and GO WARHAWKS!

A question for WW fans I plan on going to the WW-Platteville game Saturday. I used to park in the lot down by the baseball stadium for free. It's been 3-4 years is that lat still there and given the large crowds WW gets do you have to pay to park? Thanks
One place I've parked in recent years, even on a Football Saturday, is near Upham Hall. The lot entrance is right on Prairie St, or you can enter on Starin. It's a bit of a walk to get to the stadium, but it's a great walk past the bookstore and the north part of campus.
I will be seeing you there! You'll find me with a big silver sousaphone on, as it's Alumni Band day!
A big "Thanks" for the retro Sousaphone reference.
I mean.... I would rather play one of UWW's Contras (hence the screen name), but the Sousaphone is mine, and has more applications in a performing musician's world.
See you all tomorrow!

Yup, 4 more games, and a lot can happen in those 4 weeks. Namely, one thing I notice is that UWL and UWRF both have to play Oshkosh, UWL and UWRF face each other, Whitewater still has to reclaim the giant Pick Axe (I'll be at that game with my big shiny sousaphone), and the WIAC is just gonna WIAC from here on out. I absolutely love this conference where anything can happen. For Whitewater, the focus is Stout. Get through Saturday, get the Dub, and move on to the next one.

Yeah, unless criteria #2 assumes overall record, as that might be a bit confusing, River Falls would get the Pool A bid assuming a three way tie, as they haven't been to the playoffs in this century if I recall correctly. Whitewater, I assume given their current record of playing all currently or then-ranked teams and only having one loss on a walk off field goal, would get into Pool C (also I thought I saw somewhere they currently have the #2 SOS, did not see who was #1).

As a Platteville alumnus that was the most fun I have had in Warhawk Stadium.
Unfortunately, UWW is hosting the State Marching Band Championships this weekend, and from what I understand, the team does everything they can to keep the State weekend an away game or a Friday Night game (considering the forecast, probably not a good idea). I know THIS Warhawk will be cheering from the Press Box in Whitewater watching the over 20 bands playing their hearts out this Saturday.
Nice! Which band was that and how long ago? I competed with Poynette 1999-2001, and was on the Warhawk Marching Band 2003-2007. Now I help WSMA with social media posts, and hand out a single trophy with my mother's name on it (she worked for WSMA until cancer took her from us).
