Was Nielson still the AD? Might have had something to do with it. Plus it was an internal hire, perhaps with only one candidate. (Have to assume they talked to Glenn Caruso and he expressed a lack of interest.)

Often a state school has to do this sort of thing as an internal hire, then formally open the position again in the offseason for a full go-round because of hiring rules.
I highly doubt UMD looked beyond Weiss for the HC job.  UMD's offense was amazing under his guidance.

That is going to be one heck of an issue when John finally retires-who to coach SJU. I don't think they can stick with anybody on the offensive side of the ball-but I agree, who knows when we will actually be talking about retirement-could be 5-7 years from now. I can't imagine any coach voluntarily retiring after a bad season, would think one would want to go out on top-as much as one can-MIAC championship and deep run in playoffs, so this isn't the year.
Do you think John's replacement will come from out of the system?  I can't imagine Jim would get the job.

I have two free tickets for the SJU/UST game today.  email me at ozzie679@gmail.com if you want them.  They can be picked up at my store in Waite Park.

SJU had a very nice ceremony for Coach Smith, and the floor looks great.  I was surprised there were so many SCSU fans considering they had a home hockey game.

Not the greatest game to watch...

Only 1800 at the game today?  Is that a misprint?

What is the series with SCSU at?  The Johnnies probably deserve the mythical stearns title based on the last 10 and a better winning percentage in most every season.

SJU owns the series 37-18-1, with a delta of 453 points in favor of the Johnnies.   Considering that SCSU has scored all of 493 points in the series, that demonstrates a long history of SJU success.  But that isn't news to any of us.

SCSU dropped the series in 1983 for the same reason Moorhead State dropped the series with Concordia-- new conference situations.  In MSU's case, it was the NSIC, while SCSU had new NCC regulations back in the day.  Before SCSU joined the NSIC there was talk about trying to get the Johnnies back on the Huskies' schedule, but there was no upside for the Johnnies to schedule such a game.  So it likely won't happen for some time now.

While it would be a spectacle, I don't see SCSU and SJU hitting the gridiron ever again.   But as a fan of both programs, I would love to see it.  I'm shocked the schools communicated about renewing the series.  The renewal of the basketball series was an excellent idea.  Smith and Schlagel get along much better than Smith and Raymond.  With the new floor dedication, it should be a very nice crowd.  SJU just needs to step it up a bit.

That is great to hear that WIllis will be back prowling the sideline.
I believe Louis was a SCSU alum.

Louis played linebacker for St. Cloud State from 1993-1997 and was a graduate assistant coach from 1998 to 2000

Thanks for the "new" button tip.  I am just not fully accustomed to this message board.  I troll many boards, and I have never seen a message board where every topic in is one thread.  Members from schools that do not dominate the board will find it much less alienating if people used the new topic option.  The fact that we are talking about my suggestions for the board, somewhat validates my feelings.  If this was in it's own thread, nobody would have to click the link to read it.   Just a few thoughts on a chilly day.

Is everyone still talking about this guy at SJU? Jeez, hasn't it been abut four or five pages worth? Aren't there any games to be discussing for tomorrow? I need more information on what's up on the hardwood.

One of the reasons this board is incredibly hard to follow.  Is that topics like the Lieser issue do not have their own thread.  Here you have threads that are 700 posts long, with conversations dominated by just a few people and a few schools.  Try starting new threads for different topics.  I promise it will make the board more fun for everybody.

+k - nice photo Watch!

Say, what's the latest on Fogt?  I understand he's not available for the game against Morris tonight, but is he still expected back by the first of the year, or the holiday tourney?

I don't know why people are so hung up on Fogt.  He is not that good.

Hey Ozzie...what program do you coach?  Where did you play?  Why are you being a hater?

Here is what I saw last night when he played for the first time...a guy who can contribute many different ways...

+K to the fellas who made good points about Fogt, even AO...

OK, Fogt is adequate at this level.

Good or not, he's 6'9" and it will give the Johnnies 6 players to play instead of the 5 that are practically playing every minute now.

EDIT:  Whoops AS, I saw your response after I posted.  We're thinking along the same lines.

That's true, SJU disparately needs bodies.  They looked absolutely terrible the other night in St Cloud.

I'm going to pretend miacsuperfan didn't ignore the entire point of my post to nitpick and just move on...

...to a HUGE upset!

I haven't seen WSU play but for the title game last year, but it returned its best two players and had been rolling people. With this win and the close loss to Wooster, I think UST has just jumped over the defense-less Royals to become the clear MIAC favorites. No matter their loyalties, I'd be surprised if anyone tries to argue with this.
True.
I assumed Winona State had improved comparing scores from this season's WSU-Bethany Lutheran game compared to last years- as it was a 9point game last year and a 60 point game this year.  What a great win for the Tommies, the MIAC and D-3 in general.

Bethany also gave Mankato a game at the Bresnan Center.  Bethany is is not as good this year.  Winona should be as good as last year, if not better.  They have two DII All-Americans on that team.  I watched St Cloud lose to Winona in the NCAA Regional.  Win Winona is on their game, they are a machine.  This upset is unreal to me.
