I would guess this is bad news for the bsc faithful

I guess only time (as in 24 hours) will tell!

Isn't Appalachian(sic) State D1-AA?

App State - Is FCS scholarship...meaning all sports at the institution offer athletic scholarships including football (like Indiana State)

Drake - Is 1AA Non-Scholarship meaning all sports at the institution offer athletic scholarships EXCEPT FOOTBALL (Butler)

None of this is meant as a knock on the move....they are the same as Butler/Dayton....it is a step-up for CC....I would not go as far as calling it a staging area...I would use that phrase to describe the Pioneer league BB jobs (Matta)...Many 1AA Non-Scholarship program have to play DIII schools to find "like" competition (See Butler's schedule)...I think Drake played a few of the Wiscosin DIII teams in the recent past

Reality Check-

Take Mt. Union & UWW for example....there are hundreds of "non-scholarship" players who would like to go to these schools and play for National Championships but these programs do not take all comers....which is a great deal different than 90% of the other DIII schools.

These schools have built programs that allow them to selectively recruit their incoming classes, some people call it slotting...they offer kids a spot on their team based on need/talent so on and so forth.  And no other players are invited to pre-season camp.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the Manchester's, Bluffton's & Sewanee's can't recruit like this or they'll end up with 30-man rosters (some of them aren't that far off right now ((K-Zoo)).

Hope this clears up my previous statement

Their teams tend to have more transfer/JC/Prep school players on the roster, which is an advantage b/c academic standards may not be as high.

if you can turn recruits away and target 30-40 players that you want a year as a Div. III team you are pretty good.  When non-scholarship schools (MUC, UWW, Dayton, San Diego) start recruiting like Div. I schools you know they've got it rolling.

not at the game...but listening and it sounds like they are a victim of "all of the above"...which was my point earlier in the week.  You don't beat UMHB and not have a top notch football team....UMHB & UWW are as good as it gets

UWLC Defeated Hardin Simmons 47-21

UWW Defeated UWLC 35-28

UMHB Defeated Hardin Simmons 47-14

b/c i've been told the bell game cannot be used as a benchmark i cannot compare UWW/Wabash based on common opponents and margin of victory.  But these scores lead me to believe that a UWW/UMHB game IF it happens would be a close one.

I could have just used the Wabash (w/Huff)/ Franklin / North Central / UWW chain of events but I knew I would have started a fight.

as seen the other nigth in the Steeler/Doplphin game....bad conditions usually go a long way to keepin the underdog in the game...so depending on what side of the fence you sit (or perceive yourself to sit) I guess the forecast is good news

All things considered it has been a good run for Wabash...I'm just not sure they match up well with UWW, but I could see it turning into a 24-21  ;) type of game.

My 2 cents

1.  Both teams put pressure on the QB with their front 4
-UWW slight advantage because they run the ball so well so they won't be forced to drop back as much.  Out of the other side of my mouth I'll say that Wabash can nuetralize the UWW pass rush with their screen and 3-step passes.

2.  Both teams can light up the score board while playing great "D"
-Again advantage UWW eventhough I think Wabash has a better defensive unit.  I think UWW will be able to stop the run without loading the box....this will help them keep Russell and Co. in front of them (they only surrender 89 passing yards per game).  Wabash on the other hand plays with 8 in the box as their base...if they struggle to contain Beaver they will have to get the 9th man (FS) more involved.  When this happens the corners have to play even softer opening up the short "catch & run" type of routes UWW likes.  This worked well for DPU.  Beaver is about 30 yards per game better than Marks

3.  My gut feeling is UWW is just a better football team
I know common opponent is not a great predictor in College Football but these margin's of victory are crazy:

UWW Beat UMHB 41-14
UMHB Beat Trinity 55-23
Trinity Beat DePauw 43-28
DePauw Beat Wabash 24-21

UWW vs. Wabash???? ....Wabash will fight them to the death and UWW has looked very "human" thus far....it appears UWW should advance but thats why they play the game!

The difference in that game was an early turnover inside the 20 that led to a touchdown and two kick returns for touchdowns, the only returns against TU all season.  Statistically, the game was evenly matched with TU having more yardage, first downs, etc.  Most of the yardage came from the passing game after they were down by 3 or four iouchdowns.

That sir, is not a fluke.....it's Football
