Gusties "home floor advantage", IMHO, is completely down the 'ol crapper. Giving up 50 in the 2nd half?

"The Wood" has these observations:

  1.  Augsburg being 0-4.....thought they would be better than that?
  2. Gusties defense is as soft as a Bruegger's softwich sandwich
  3. UST is once again a strong, tough team who I think will contend for the MIAC crown
  4. BU's defense is as soft as GAC's.....that game could be 109-108 in 5 OT's
  5. Agree that SJU's Brink is Big Money. Very solid player
  6. Except for Fogarty, SJU's ass't coaches must be the youngest group in the country.
  7. Is Carleton this good? (and Drake with only 4 pts last night? Is he injured?)
  8. The Gusaas kid from Hamline.....will he not see the floor much this year? He's a BIG GuY.....is he not a fit with the new coach?
  9. WW: your Gustie would beat the current GAC group by 40....without breaking a sweat
10. WW: how are the Red Wing boys/girl's team going to fare this year?

Enough of my ramblings......this should be enough for a couple of months!

Ammann's teams showed his trademark offensive game style with great shooting and fast-paced offenses. (Augsburg set NCAA 3-point shooting record with 12 made per game in 1989.)

Ammann's defensive philosophy incorporates high pressure trapping with tough man-to-man techniques.

Ammann is the sole Division III coach to have a player selected in the first round of the NBA draft - Devean George of the Lakers.

Wow, Ammann's still hanging his hat on Devean George?!!!

He's a self-proclaimed "great coach" when in fact, he was horrible. He single handily drove Augsburg basketball into the cellar. I doubt we could find very few, if any, former players that cared for him.

BIG RUMOR.......has it the two finalists for the HU job are:

Nelson Whitmore - Head Coach at SUNY-Brockport

Jim Hayes - ass't coach at Carleton

A decision could come as soon as Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

"Woody - For not caring about the Gusties or coaching staff, you sure seem to know alot about their recruits this year"

Drake.....was only reporting some rumors I got from one of the MIAC rival coaches. I absolutely know nothing about their recruiting.

Now, I also mentioned the kid from Ellsworth going to Auggie, right? But similarly, this info was also given me by another coach.

Just reporting what I stumble upon.........!!!!

And......I'll say it again. Auggies make the playoffs and BU will win both the conference and the post season tourney!!

Thanks, Drake. It's at least comforting to know that I have one person looking out for me! I appreciate your comments & realize my prompting of a Cobber discussion was bad-timing and ill advised.

Regarding the "men's game being played first".....it was my understanding that they like the idea of being done early on the Saturday games.

I like the idea of the league reverting back to the one game per night scenario. Plus, I'd like to see all the so-called "rival games" (SJU-UST, CAR-STO, etc.) played on Saturday's. It would certainly draw bigger crowds......IMHO.

Anyone have an opinion on how the kid from Holy Angels (Wertjes?) will do at GAC? I realize that's an open-ended question....but am curious how the basketball geniuses feel!

Heard GAC also got Doble's younger brother......from Florida?

I believe the Auggies will be improved enough next year to be a definite post-season team. I think they recruited the good shooter from Ellsworth. Didn't he have 10-12 treys in last year's Class 1A championship game.

Again, if this all "old news"......shame on me!

Regarding Concordia:  Woody – it's Siverson.  And your timing is off by a couple of months for the annual "why can't the Cobbers get high quality recruits to the F-M area?"

Just trying to stir some conversation.....didn't realize we couldn't talk about "old news."

Regarding Saturday's doubleheaders, I'm told the men have requested to play the first game. Has anyone heard differently?

Any word coming out of Hamline? I've talked with a couple of very good HS coaches and attempted to have them apply, but they declined.

Let's talk Cobber ball.....thought they drastically underachieved last year. Sieverson (sp?) must have some great pictures of the AD or Pres. as they never seem to get to that next step and his job seems quite secure. Seems like a nice guy, unlike the fella down on '169', but terrible at recruiting and developing teams.

Now there, Drake, as you requested, thought I'd "stir the pot" a little bit. I'm sure Mr. Wonka will attempt to undress me again, but what the hell, he's a "homer" (gustie) anyway so I would expect that.

From Shooter's column yesterday:

The job hasn't even been posted, but Hamline University has received about 50 calls from potential candidates seeking the school's men's basketball coaching position.

The "Admin" is moving very slow, if at all. Guess there's no hurry, in their minds anyway.

Some coaches that are very qualified for the job, are not applying.....they feel it's a dead-end job. Not sure what they entirely mean by that, but that's the scuttle butt.

Just lost a long post on my work computer...I'll get back to it tonight.

In the meantime...

TDT, the last 3 times I've gone out I've fired a 95, 89 and 91. I went 36 last Friday and turned in my best scores of the summer. Amazing how good you can get on free golf over a year, eh? Something tells me that you're just bitter at having to look at the Wonka signed pylon from the SJU debacle on 11/11/06 every morning when you wake up...

Mr. Wonka.....are you still throwing arrows at me?

Woody: what's your interest in the HS teams that is significant enough to draw you around the country?  Are you a coach, parent, journalist, or masseuse?

Fan & traveling on business. Because of that (business) wasn't able to catch all the games.

Following all the MN teams....most have made a fine showing in both tourneys.

Damn, my "hammy's" are still sore from grabbing my ankles!

Nice epistle, Mr. Wonka. I fully expected you would come to the defense of Coach Hanson and commend you for your loyalty. He should be so lucky to have recruited someone of such great character as yourself.

Having watched a full day of hoops, I was not able to respond earlier, so am terribly sorry to have delayed your preparation for your second attack. (I also spent a fair amount of the day doing some serious stretching, as I figured I'd have to be grabbing my ankles at some point as well!)

Your points, I am sure, are quite valid and I have no reason to dispute them. I just happen, along with many others, to not particularly care for Hanson. Has he done anything to me personally? Not at all. There are just some people you like and some you put to the wayside. For me, he happens to fall into that second category.

I'm not choosing to get into a bonafide pissing contest with you, as it wouldn't produce a winner anyway.  I respect your defense of him and will let it stop with that. I have neither the time, energy or interest to dispute this further. Does that make you a clear cut winner as several have posted you would be, being you "had such an advantage?" If that makes everyone feel better, then fine, you can declare yourself the champ and wear the belt with pride.

I will move onto other discussions and will hopefully be allowed to post my opinions. I may agree with you and may not, but this seems to be a good basketball board for discussion of a vareity of topics and while some are rather anal in nature, I enjoy the banter that takes place.

And for the record, while I have read this board off and on for some time now, I have never before posted on here and am finding I'd better be on guard from here on out!

Thank you for your lengthy rebuttal. The only part I had a hard time with was the vision of "white man dancing" and can perhaps believe that everyone was better for it that Coach Hanson did not step on the dance floor. Somehow I'm thinking that display of aerobics (sp?) may have been less than fluid.

Good day, Mr. Wonka. I hope your golf game is going well.

Regarding Westman.....I heard it's definitive that he's not coming back.

Who's better than Bethel?

What, I take a little holiday break & return to this mini-mayhem?  From the sounds of it, it seems like the season is right around the corner rather than another 4 months away.  I like it.

Maybe I've missed it, but do we know what Woody's credentials are regarding this topic, compared to Willy Wonka's? Wonka has the upper hand in my mind.

Help - someone pick me up off the office floor.  I accidentally dragged my keyboard & monitor down on top of me after reading Pat's comments.   Pat, you're coming to Willy's defense?   :o ;D

I find it interesting that the Gusties have yet to post a story on their website on the hiring of Josh Drinkall, but still have the story up regarding Aaron Kahl's move to Dakota Wesleyan.  I posted about Drinkall 3 weeks ago, 6/18 & at the time they didn't even have his bio posted.  And as of today, they still don't have an article posted announcing the hiring of Drinkall.

Sounds like you've got a bit of a GAC ax to grind there Woody.  Are you any relation to Funbballer?  ;)  I will admit that I have heard similar comments passed along to high school guards considering Gustavus.  Something along the lines of - "if you ever want to dribble the ball again or during your college career, I'd consider another school other than Gustavus."  With that being said, it's a little difficult to knock their results.  Here are a few highlights:

(7) MIAC playoff championships
(6) NCAA Sweet 16s
(3) Elite Eights
(1) National championship finalist

But I've said my piece, I think I'll sit back & watch this one unfold.  This could be a "goodun." I'm still recovering from my Wohler beatdown.  ;D

Good luck Woody, Last Word is a relentless, articulate, impassioned spokesman for all things black & gold & GAC-like.  ;)

Funbballer? Don't know him, but I like the name.

Ax to grind? None at all. Hanson's had success, I just don't care for him or anybody that carries themselves as if "it's all about me."

Mr. Wonka and Mr. Coleman in the same corner? Interesting!

Freedom to coach?

Lets first agree that the head coach always has the final say, as it should be. However, when you surround yourself with capable assistant coaches (and you do hire them believing their capable, right?), then you ought to let them have input and actually listen to what they have to say. Say what you, Mr. Wonka, but according to sources that I know, Hanson really doesn't listen or care what others think. He may put on a front that he does, but bottom line, he really doesn't. People think that to him, assistant coaches are just "figureheads" and he thinks he's so damn intelligent, that nobody knows anything about the game except him.

If a head coach really don't want input from his assistants, then supplement your staff with a bunch of grad assistant stiffs and make them your puppets.

Hanson is an egotistical sort who believes "it's all about him." I don't know you, Mr. Wonka, but you obviously played for this guy and will defend him to the end. That's fine. However, I have to believe you're in that corner alone. Most guys (friends, coaches) I know say his former players can't stand him because of the way he treated them, that it wasn't any fun playing for him and they were glad to get out. And, I have to believe the assistant coaches feel the same way.

Is that what D-III is all about? I don't think so.

And by the way, regarding Hanson's lack of recruiting proficiency recently? The Gusties will be horrible this year. They may survive the Top 6 for the playoffs, but that's only because the entire league will be way down this year and Bethel will walk away with the conference and playoff championships.

Now, have at me Mr. Wonka. I'm attending national summer tournaments and I need a little diversion from the games!
