The Warts put up a nice battle, but got a little too far behind early... They had a chance to cut the WW lead to 6 with plenty of time in the 4th, but a couple pass rush induced picks ended the day for the Knights.

Nice showing by the ARC.  Knocked out the WIAC AQ, and gave Whitewater all they wanted.

Holy crap!  Central wins too!

ARC with 2 in the 2nd round.  Nice!

What a comeback by Central!

ARC looking pretty tough.  Hope they can take it in OT!

Looks like the Warts screwed up in reverse by losing to Central...  ended up with a better draw.

Hindsight is 20-20 of course.

Wartburg travels to Michigan and Central hosts Oshkosh.

Go IIAC! errr.... ARC!

I just received a brochure from Wartburg describing a $ 3.2 M addition to "the W."  It will create a new Strength and Conditioning Center, and a new exercise science department will occupy the space formerly occupied for athletes' conditioning.  They tout that Wartburg will be the first D3 college to utilize the EliteForm motion-capture system thoughout the entire weight room and all 17 stations.  They say the technology is more commonly used by professional sports teams and D1 programs.  It can help manage each athlete's individual workout.  The competition keeps heating up.

Hmmm.... wonder if the ARC presidents are considering kicking WB out of the conference over this.

(I really find the actions of the MIAC puzzling...  education doesn't always infer common sense I guess.  )

I found this info, which is interesting:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/schifrin/2017/08/02/2017-college-financial-grades-how-fit-is-your-school/#71dfada67d68

Here are the relevant schools:

ARC
***
Buena Vista      2.72      B
Central         2.49      B-
Coe                 1.45      C-
Loras         1.64      C
Luther         2.72      B
Nebraska Wesleyan   2.50      B-
Simpson         2.39      B-
U. of Dubuque      2.33      C+
Wartburg              2.62      B

MIAC
****
Augsburg              2.10      C
Bethel         1.85      C
Carleton              4.37      A+
Concordia              2.82      B
Gustavus Adolphus   2.43      B-
Hamline         1.59      C
Macalester              4.11      A
College of SB      2.54      B
St. Catherine U.           2.49      B-
Saint John's U.      3.49      A
St Olaf         3.71      A
U of St. Thomas      3.22      B+

Another thought...  once this is done, some schools in the MIAC will be pissed...  If St. Thomas gets the boot, they will be, maybe St. Johns, and some others.  On the other hand, if the vote to oust them fails, other schools will be mad.

Maybe the ARC should go big or go home.  Try to recruit 3 MIAC schools... go to a 12 team league with a North/South or East/West divisions depending on who leaves the MIAC.

St. Thomas, St. Johns and Concordia maybe (the last two have wrestling).

Pick your 3 favorite....

I think the MIAC is messing up big time.  This is exactly the sort of thing that can destroy a conference...  Sort of what happened when Texas was throwing its TV weight around and Nebraska and Missouri, Colorado, and Texas A&M left the Big 12.

Why it probably won't happen...  I did not realize how compact the MIAC is from a travel perspective until I looked at the map.   I can imagine in D3 giving that up would be a major pill to swallow.

I could also imagine some of the snootier schools (Olaf, Carleton...) going to the similarly snooty Midwest Conference if things did not break their way....

Will be really interesting to see what happens.

MIAC won't expel the Tommies

Reporters in Minneapolis including Patrick Reusse are reporting it is probable.  Seems completely nuts to me...

They are also saying St. Thomas would maybe go DII if it happens... That seems nuts to me too...  The ARC has 9 schools (10 is better) including one from Nebraska that recently won a championship in Basketball... They renamed the conference so it might be more attractive to schools outside Iowa....

The argument being reported is that St. Thomas is too big enrollment-wise (according to presidents in the MIAC)...  they have over 6000 undergrads, which is a lot bigger than the other MIAC (and ARC) schools...  but the ARC schools regularly compete against St. Thomas, and the WIAC schools which are larger still.

Seems like an idea worth considering... might even help in D3 recruiting for Iowa schools in Minnesota.  It isn't THAT far for travel, in fact for Luther and Wartburg at least it is a lot closer than NWU.  Imagine every ARC school competing in the highest profile D3 college in the Twin Cities many times per year.  If I were the presidents of the ARC schools I would be sending roses and canned ham to every important person at St. Thomas.  The CCIW and MWC seem like poor fits to me for various reasons...

I'd do it.  (As a Wartburg fan my fear is that football would be impossible most years, but as a Wartburg alum I think the demographics of the upper Midwest are such that any advantage in recruiting students... ALL students, not just athletes, is an opportunity too good to miss.)

The big problem is that I expect St. Thomas would not be overly excited...  but if they DO get kicked out of the MIAC, none of the alternatives are perfect.

Have you all been following the St. Thomas situation in the MIAC?  If the MIAC does expel St. Thomas, I think it could be a huge win to invite them to the ARC.  The conference re-name was to allow for expansion I understand...

I understand that they will be a bear in football, and a few other sports, but it would certainly make the ARC a stronger conference.

Anyone think it is worth pursuing?  Or is the idea too stupid to live?

UD has wrapped it up?  If WB wins out, and UD loses to Coe and Central, WB gets the automatic bid I think.  Perhaps not likely, but certainly possible.

Great football game.  Had to be a fun game to play so kudos to the players on both teams.

I think I was right to say the other day the Knights got a VERY tough draw given their ranking in the region.  Wartburg's loss to Bethel last year seemed similar, trailed most of the game, had a chance at the end.

Not sure how often the Johnnies have played in Waverly, but glad it is there next week.

As some others have said, the video broadcast was quite good.

Loads of bulletin board material on the D3 website.... the Knights get very little love from the prognosticators.  The Knights (and the iiac for that matter) need a deep run to prove the strength of the team and the conference.   Very unfair that the Knights did not get Macalester or St. Scholastica in the first round.  Should create a slow burn for the players, who have done everything asked of them this year.  How the HELL did the committee give St. Johns an easier first round game?  Simple... lack of respect.

Best wishes to Wartburg to AGAIN surprise the so-called experts.

you must be reading some other experts:

http://www.d3blogs.com/d3football/2014/11/21/division-iii-playoffs-round-of-32-triple-takes-score-predictions/

QuoteKeith's take: Wartburg 35, St. Thomas 21
Ryan's take: Wartburg 34, St. Thomas 20
Pat's take: Wartburg 54, St. Thomas 35
Consensus: For all the talk about it being a tough draw, we've got the Knights by two or three touchdowns.

I must agree, the scores go for Wartburg, but read this article that was published earlier...  and you will see what I mean.

Willamette just upset Linfield, so one would guess Wartburg moves up to #5 in the nation in the next top 25 poll.

End of 3rd Quarter... tied at 14.

But  Bethel is on a drive deep in Wartburg Territory.

****************************

Bethel held to a field goal (that BARELY made it through)

17-14 with 12:54 to go in the game.

****************************

Wow!!!

Wartburg scores on 75 yard pass play.  Bethel blocks extra point returns for points.

Wartburg 20 Bethel 18 with a little over 12 mins to play.

*****************************

Game has turned into a shootout...

Bethel 26 Wartburg 20  bout 9 mins left

*****************************

17.6 seconds left in Arden Hills... 34 - 27 Bethel leads....  Wartburg in the red zone.  Darn fun game to watch!

*****************************

*****************************

Wartburg's season ends on the Bethel 13 yard line as time expires.....

Nice season,  I think this game was closer than the D3 prognisticators predicted.
