November 13, 2009, 11:50:54 AMQuote from: stimulator on November 13, 2009, 11:24:50 AMQuoteThis is probably the best defense they have face all year and if the offense can click on all cylinders they can be a very dangerous team.
Not sure I would agree. This is the same D that gave up 30 points to an inept RPI offense at their place.
They can be dangerous if they can convert on 3rd down. The difference in this Susq team vs the last two years is Palazzi and their recievers have been able to convert on 3rd down after teams focus on Paveltz.
The key to beating them is to finish tackles on Paveltz. RPI just didn't accompish that. Too may arm tackles and excuse or not, too many players on D gassed or not playing due to the ****'n flu.
I was referring to the Union D they only allowed 15 pts by RPI .. not SU's D

On paper both team are very similar with a few exceptions that will determine the outcome of the game. Offense seems to be the key in many people minds especially after last year 51 to 45 shoot out in the rain at Susquehanna.
I think defense will play a major role this weekend, even Union's esteemed radio announcer Frank Rossi is picking the visiting team (Sunday on Blog Talk radio 17 to 14) I don't know if that his attempt at motivation or if he has given up on the young skill players on the offense of Union due to their turn over problems?
During Susquehanna's successful drive through the Liberty league the only team they lost to was MM without QB Rich Palazzi 24 to 8, they only managed 226 yards of offense 149 rushing and 77 passing. I am sure Dave Paveletz is playing even though he sat most of the last game and is not on the 2 deep chart this week. (A little gamesmanship) I am guessing this late in the season Paveletz is a little dinged up like everyone but will be a key to stop with his 5.0 per carry 10 TD's and average 136.8 per game wil be a challenge. Palazzi is on fire the SO QB stats are great he's averaging 13.5 yards per pass & catch ...

So what does it mean ... if Union's Offense can play conservative run the ball effectively like last week and pass when needed vs a good defense, things will go well. No mistakes on special teams and no turn overs are keys to both teams success. The Union D needs to minimize the run and force Palazzi out of the pocket to run (his average last season and this season is -2.6 per rush) he is more of a pocket passer. Also Palazzi is listed at 5' 10" and 180 lbs ish the defense needs to hit him has many times as possible to wear him down. Union D line DT Conerly (280 lbs) and HavilandEduah (255 lbs) need to shut down the middle with Romano (230 lbs) and Hovsepian (220 lbs) at DE bringing pressure from the edge. The LB's Peters, Modliszewski and Sixto, Jr should fill the holes DB's Baxter, C Johnson, Brolley and JP Sticco need to press cover the receivers to help pressure the QB causing 3 and outs. Union and Susquehanna have virtually the same stats and record 6-0 vs 5-1 in LL play the major factor is Union is usually playing from negative turnover margin but is still winning the games while Susquehanna is winning for a positive margin. This is probably the best defense they have face all year and if the offense can click on all cylinders they can be a very dangerous team.

I think most that most here know that very few teams over the past ten years could hang with Mount Union. I understand the idea behind pointing out the sillyness of posters lamenting over a season that will inevitably end to Mount, when in the past, our years have.... ended to Mount.
With that said, I think a lot of the frustration in here boils down to the level of football being played. Most on here have been around long enough to compare the current level of play to a good number of years. Just off the top of my head, it's clear that teams such as Ithaca, Cortland, RPI, Hobart, Union, Fisher, Springfield, Brockport, Rowan... are down significantly compared to teams not too many years ago.
While the past and current teams may still all add up to losses to Mount, there's something to be said for quality football being played. It's fun to watch your school have playmakers on offense and defense, have an explosive offense, a shutdown defense, an incredible wideout, a QB that can make all the throws.. and there just hasn't been too much of that this. There's a certain level of disappointment as I believe many around here just a short time ago, including myself, thought a number of teams out of the East were just about ready to compete on the national level. Five or six years later, we seem a very long way from that..
Very well said tecmo, +k
After yesterdays results dlip is felling very frustrated with the "level" of play in the east here in 09. You make a great point that many of us have been around and thought, at one point, we were getting closer. Yet this year it seems very obvious to dlip that we as a region are just not there. dlip thinks the way you put it in your post makes perfect sense and is a respectful way to describe how many of us feel. dlip does not want to sit here and hammer the east for what good will it do? Yet, when looking in the mirror, we see Del Val, who is probably now our top team, who we already know could not hang with Wesley. Yes dlip knows Del Val has improved, but ****, so has Wesley. Let's just ****in hope the level of football grows in 10' and works it way a bit closer to the national stage.
dlippiel,
First with D 3 football we don't have the luxury of injury reports and accurate information on whose playing and even the stats are not 100% accurate. That being said, it creates a difficult environment to pick games winners. (It is also why D3 is a great take on any given day anything can happen)
Union beats Ithaca both teams at full strength early in the season, Ithaca loses to Springfield 5 starters out both defensive ends (93 & 95 DNP) vs. a rush orient team. Merchant Marine beats Susquehanna (QB Palazzi does not play) Union losses to Muhlenberg after the game it was determined Connolly QB had a mild concussion. Ithaca beats Alfred (93 & 95) play 8 tackles, 4 TFL and 1 sack, how do you measure the impact of the non-skill position with factors that don't show up on the stat sheet. For example the IC DE maybe drew 2 or 3 holding penalties that – 30 yards and can kill drives. That what makes this so hard to predict and why they play the games.
As for MT Union consistency, they have more depth than most D3 school I understand they have 100 on a freshman team, a JV squad and 100+ on the varsity unit. How are their academic standards vs. all the other programs? In my opinion it's not apples to apples, it's like a D1 non scholarship program trying to beat a BCS program, they don't have the same resources and guidelines.

Karma ++ for WPI
article from Worchester telegraph
WPI sophomore running back Ernie Mello was just hanging out with friends near Stoddard Hall that night last spring when a horrific noise interrupted their wee-hour gathering.
"I heard a crash, a very loud crash," Mello recalled this week.
He bolted from the dormitory, looked down Institute Road, and then his instincts took over.
"I ran from Stoddard," Mello said, "and I never stopped."
At the bottom of the street, at the intersection of Park Avenue, a car was engulfed in flames, and the driver was trapped inside.
"It was a crazy scene," Mello said. "As I got closer, I wanted to see if I could help her out of the car."
The driver's side door was jammed, Mello said, so "someone, I don't know who it was" cracked the driver's side window open. Mello and classmate Matt Zubiel, who is a volunteer firefighter in his home state of Colorado, pulled 61-year-old Arsine Sahverdiyan of Worcester to safety. According to reports, Sahverdiyan's car allegedly had been rear-ended by a drunk driver while she was stopped at a red light.
"We grabbed her legs and shimmied her out the window," Mello said. "She was screaming and badly burned. We carried her to the side of the road and sat with her until the ambulance came."
Mello kind of gave real meaning to the term "football hero."
"It was dangerous, but I couldn't just sit there and not do something," he said.
Mello met with Sahverdiyan's family shortly after the accident and has kept in touch with her son, Vartan. They have spoken on the phone and are Facebook friends.
"If not for Ernie's and Matt's efforts, my mom would not be alive," Vartan Sahverdiyan said. "We owe them an enormous debt of gratitude. They put their own lives at risk to save her. They are true heroes."
Vartan said his mother is doing pretty well.
Mello has not seen or spoken to Mrs. Sahverdiyan since the accident, but an on-campus reunion is being planned, Mello said, at the end of football season.

Mello has not seen or spoken to Mrs. Sahverdiyan since the accident, but an on-campus reunion is being planned, Mello said, at the end of football season.

Today's LL match ups ...
Saturday, October 17
12:00 pm Rochester at Merchant Marine
MM vs. UR will be a ball control game, both teams can run ... can UR pass on MM stingy pass defense or have they not been tested ... the Susquehanna game Palazzi did not play QB he was out this game will shed some light on the final LL standings. UR 21 MM 14
1:00 pm Rensselaer at Susquehanna
SU vs. RPI may surprise you ... Susquehanna is leaving the liberty league with a bang Paveletz will have big day on the ground and Palazzi in the air I don't think RPI has seen a team this strong yet ... SU 30 RPI 14
1:00 pm Union at St. Lawrence
If the Union team that played the last two weeks shows up and not the one that went to Muhlenberg it should not be close. No turnovers Unions Coney will do well on the ground and Connolly should have time to go down field to Gallo, Gourrier and Concannon ... Union 31 SLU 10

October 03, 2009, 11:38:51 AMQuote from: Frank Rossi on October 03, 2009, 11:01:37 AMI maybe but they ran on Union big if they can run like that and make RPI play from behind having to pass, while slowing down thier run game ... it can happen they are a good team losing to Union 2-1, CWR 3-0 and STF 2-2 with 1 lioss to MT Union .. Utica has been the only test for RPI this is a big game for Rochester they came to Union last year and won?? see u at the game !!!Quote from: RJ on October 03, 2009, 10:14:35 AM
LL Pick of the week
Today's keys - Ball control no turnovers
12:00 pm St. Lawrence at Hobart – Hobart will need to run effectively and control the ball no mistakes today in LL play. SLU is only averaging 260 yard of total Offense per game Hobart defense should be too much ..
SLU 17 vs. Hobart 34
1:00 pm Rochester at Rensselaer – if Roc stingy run defense can hold RPI down and make them have to pass their maybe an upset today. Utica was RPI's closest game and they were +3 on turnovers and rushed for 200+ yards. Roc was +3 vs. Union but lost on the last plays of the game, Roc needs to score in the red zone today and force RPI in to a passing battle, to get their first LL win.
Roc 21 vs. RPI 17
2:30 pm Susquehanna at Merchant Marine – this one could be ugly Susquehanna looks to be the real deal and compete for LL title this year. They are averaging 27.5 pts per game and 367 in offense. MM was held to 7 yards on the ground and 200 in the air vs. SLU last week. Long day for the MM cadets ...
Sus 42 vs. MM 14
6:00 pm WPI at Union – Unions run Defense needs to bottle up Ernie Mello 51.5, Aaron Champagne 48.8, Pat McAuley 47.5,and Mike Swanton 45.0. WPI is run first then pass. This will for Swanton and McAuley (back up) in to passing 150 and 43 ypg respectively. WPI was + 1 in turnovers vs. RPI. Union needs to run Coney pounding WPI d-line and then Connolly can pass down field to Gallo, Gourrier, and Concannon. Finally balls security will surely be a focus today after last week's -3 day with turnovers
WPI 17 vs. Union 31
I think you're off your rocker if you think Rochester can rebound from two consecutive disappointing endings in the role of spoiler to defeat a pretty upstart RPI team. In addition, I think a Susquehanna rout of USMMA is unlikely with some pretty big revenge issues present after the huge comeback and end-of-game shock for USMMA to have to consider for the last year. Susquehanna wins, I think, but narrowly. And I'm the guy who called Susquehanna the LL dark horse this year.

WPI vs Union preview:
WPI comes into Frank Bailey with a 3-1 (0-1 LL) record after their loss to RPI last week at WPI. Union heads home sporting a 2-1 (1-0 LL) record coming off a last minute victory over U of R out in Rochester. Both teams would do well to add a conference win here. A W would put WPI at 500 and gain momentum carrying into conference play. Union looks to go 2-0 in the LL and desperately needs confidence as well as an identity heading into Hobart the following week.
WPI Offense: This offense thus far has been quite efficient and effective. The question mark here (which is the same ? as every year for WPI going into league play) is the strength of their competition and wins. Their first test last week at home vs RPI did not go very well. WPI managed to score some points but was handed a loss by the Engineers. WPI has outscored opponents 144-62 averaging 36.0 ppg. WPI avgs 221.8 yards on the ground having scored 14TD's and 186.8 in the air scoring 5TD's respectively. In regards to league play WPI ranks 1st in the LL in total offense and 1st in the LL in rushing.
WPI Defense: WPI gives up 15.5 ppg allowing 154.2 yds per game and 164.2 through the air. As a Defense they have given up 9TDs in 09. In the league the Bizarroneers are ranked 4th in total defense and 2nd in scoring defense.
Thoughts on WPI: Well every year this team starts strong but plays against **** competition. This year has been more of the same with the lone somewhat impressive W coming against a Salve Regina team that may...may challenge Plymouth State and the Purple Drank for the NEFC title. This team is almost always a question mark. Yet this year the Dutch were given some idea as to the Bizarroneers prowess or lack there of from the result of their loss to RPI last week. RPI comes into week 5 sporting a #3 ERFP ranking which gives WPI some credibility in their hard fought effort in the loss last week. WPI could not handle RPI Fresh QB Mike Hermanan and couldn't put up enough points on O to offset RPI. From this dlip feels that even with the loss WPI has the potential to come into Frank Bailey and leave with a W if Union does not play and execute the way they can. WPI has a nasty QB in Sr Mike Swanton who is both a threat in the air and especially on the ground. Swanton is 49-93 with 2 int and 4td in the air and 41-239 with 4TD's on the ground. This kid is very athletic and can kill a D if he is left unchecked. Others to mention: RB Ernie Mello (39-209-4TDs), RB Aaron Champagne (35-195-4TDs), Back-up QB Pat McAvley (13-195-1TD on the ground). R.C. Grady WR 249yds and 2 TDs avg 15.6 ypg and Nick Bean 133 yards 0TDS avg 11.1ypg. The Bizarroneers have some talent on the O side of the ball and some strength on the defensive side.
Union LL rankings: The Dutch come in ranked 5th in the LL in total offense. They are 2nd in passing and 6th in rushing respectively. On defense the U is 4th in total D and 2nd in scoring D.
Prediction: WPI gives U a very tough game but Audino's boys know they must come out of this night home game with a W. Swanton will give U some fits early but will not be able to keep up with Unions skilled offense thoughout 4 quarters. Unions secondary must make proper reads and not bite on Swantons running because as stated earlier he can/will hurt them through the air if they make mistakes. As usual the Union D will need to get some pressure which will be harder with the absence of Charles Hovespian on the d-line. LB's must also stay home and make Swanton beat them in the air. If Swanton is unable to get the run going because of tough U D and Union forces the pass, Swanton will struggle when Unions secondary can predict the pass. Union comes out on top 34-21.
Nice job .. K+ ... what are your thoughts on Rochester vs RPI??
