Lightning is serious business and it's right of the NCAA to enforce a mandatory delay when there is lightning in the area.

Pat,

It was a joke, I'm painfully aware of lighting rules and delays having coached youth sports for thirty years. Your getting a little stodgy in your advancing years. I do believe a little metal bleacher time for NCAA leadership during a lightning storm could only improve their decision making.

That's a joke too  ;)

Ahh, alright. Throw a  :) on the other joke and I would have gotten it too. :)

Some things don't come thru well in black and white. It was meant as a sarcastic response to the idea that lighting delays could be a criteria for setting game start times. Lighting happens but it's hard to plan for well in advance.
It's good to see your still slumming on the boards here. The new site is great.

Solid arguments guys,
I actually put this question to a number of coaches during the recruiting process and many made the same points. Quite a few also said they would like to have night games at least occasionally and enjoy playing under the lights very much. The original point still stands, one team wanted 7pm, one wanted 1pm, so we got 4pm because no one would give in. Should have tossed a coin or arm wrestled for it, compromise seems so unfootball like.

CC,

I love a good debate, so with respect here's my response.
Honestly playing football every week  at 1pm saturday feels like we're all still in high school somewhere where they can't afford lights or are not really into football. Thunderstorms? I say play on this is football! College students that can't stay up late on a Saturday Night? I'm going to have a difficult time accepting that unless the argument is they'll miss the best parties of the week. Though it's a moot point now, I'm sure any coach would be unhappy looking at the schedule to find he is playing a defending league champ on their field for homecoming and under the lights.

Bubdad,

You aint't gonna believe this.  Our third dog is a rescued Catahoula.  A girl named Mattie - the friendliest dog you ever met.    Now that's a small world, eh?

That's awesome! As I said I love the breed. My two girls are the most natural hunters I've ever seen. They can run and hunt in the woods and return to the exact spot they were released every time guaranteed. They stay on the property and love they're house and people. If you dont work them they will go nuts though, as I'm getting older I may need a mellower breed.

GoHop,

I think all your observations are dead on. Personally I would like to see someone else "step up" but as anyone can see by my pick'ems I like underdogs, favored teams bore me. Since your a Hopkins guy I can't help bringing up something that is sticking in the craw in Selinsgrove this year. The word is that JHU was less than thrilled about playing the Crusaders in Selinsgrove for Homecoming based on SU's success last year. That led to hard negotiations and a 4pm start time so the game would not be played under the lights as well. If true it's a shame as it turns out that the crusaders aren't much of a threat this year and Susquehanna has a beautiful stadium for night games.

Bubdad, thanks for bringing up the rescued Greyhounds.  It is ironic that this old Mule has 2 rescued Greyhounds sitting here with me.  Both boys are former racing dogs.  Angus is very outgoing and sociable and Wally is the new guy who was surely abused because he's a little skittish -- but still affectionate and trying hard to get over his past.  Anyway, to all those out there in D3 land, I recommend a Greyhound as a pet as they are very loving and gentle souls.

When I met the dogs and talked to their handlers I was impressed by how calm they were and how they handled the game environment. I thought they were the nervous type but the word is they're very good family dogs. I have a couple of catahoulas right now and love the breed, but I have not had as much oppotunity to hunt them as I had hoped which is frustrating for this kind of hound.

My latest observation is the CC is the right fit for SU, but the team would have had more succes in the LL based on this years results there. The Centennial is a strong conference this year.

CC,
Moravian is a outstanding college and I love bethlehem. We lived in Sussex county NJ and a lot of kids from there went to Moravian, there's a great sports tradition there. I'm a dog lover so I loved the rescue greyhounds running on the field this year. I think the Greyhounds are doing well considering the challenges they had coming into the season. In my humble opinion Johns Hopkins and Gettysburg have more talent than Ursinus, but the Bears have balance and attitude, they have the inside track to the chamionship at this point. Muhlenberg has a chance, as I said previously they have the best coaching and organization. They game plan very well, matching there strengths against other teams weaknesses and their halftime adjustments actually work. Unfortunately for the Mules no one will be taking them lightly from now on.

Question: How does a QB go from being one of the best in the region one year to one of the worst in the conference the next?

I assume you are talking about the SU QB. Level of competition and/or familiarity of the defenses he is facing could very well contribute to this. Also, I don't know too much about SU but do they have the same playmakers in the passing game? After all, a QB can only do half of the work, the other half is on the receivers to get open and catch the ball and make plays. Just a couple thoughts from a outsider, haven't seen the kid play at all nor do I know anything about the makeup of the SU team.

When you say F&M looks like an average team, who is that in comparison to? I am just curious because their only loss is to Ursinus who is currently undefeated. I have been extremely impressed with the play of Harrison in past years and am just curious what makes you consider them an average team.

Your QB comments all seem reasonable but there's more to it. Palazzi had a ton of good experience last year and progressed very well, but this year he looks like a deer in the headlights, as if he's lost his focus and confidence. He got himself benched on Saturday, it's a very strange developement.
Regarding F&M, such comments are always risky and I have been flamed in the past, but I love the game and a good discussion. I will rephrase and say that F&M is a good team but I see four teams I'm convinced are better which puts them in the middle of the CC or in other words "average" though I don't want it to come across as an insult. Harrison appeared to have trouble seeing and I think would have struggled against a team that wasn't horribly depleted on defense as SU was. F&M has a tough remaining schedule, we'll see how it goes.
Another observation while I'm at it. Ursinus does not look to be the most talented team in this conference but they are very aggressive, especially on special teams. They are definitley the nastiest team and to play them you need to be ready to match it.

With injuries and suspensions SU was in disarray on Saturday, hard to watch. Crusaders may have to go recruiting on campus at this rate. With all due respect to any followers here, F&M comes across as an average team to me.

My picks,

Hopkins
Gettysburg
Muhlenberg
Susquehanna

Pickems:

Dickinson
Franklin & Marshall
Muhlenberg
Johns Hopkins
Susquehanna

It's time for the Crusaders to get after it and pull off a road upset against a solid Bear eleven.

They certainly haven't played to their potential so far, it would be a great time to pull it all together.

I've seen Gettysburg's offense and was very impressed, maybe to impressed. The Mules game planning and adjustments took down the Crusaders, maybe they'll do it again. Muhlenberg was my first choice for my son, but he followed his heart and his friends to SU. Good luck to the Mules this week.

Picks Summary

CCfan27 - 11-6 - .647 win pct
Muledaddy - 10-6 - .625 win pct
Bubdad - 9-8 - .529 win pct
69 Mule - 10-7 - .588 win pct
Old ends - 7-4 - .636 win pct
GoHop - 5-1 - .833 win pct

Looks like there were some good games throughout the CC this weekend. I don't have too much insight on any of the games but would like to hear some people thoughts if they were at any of the games. I listened to a good portion of the Moravian game and it was simply another case of no offensive support. The defense is on the field for too long and is bound to give up some points when you put them in certain situations. Most teams are not going to win many games in the CC scoring less than 10 points. Interesting to see McDaniel at 3-0 but I'd say the easier part of their schedule is over and they will certainly be tested in the coming weeks.

Bubdad was at the SU/Muhlenberg game of course. Ouch! The Crusaders are having a rough season so far and an absolute disaster in the red zone. Muhlenberg has an excellent organization and coaching staff that will carry them past some better teams. Based on past experience I was surprised to see such a small turnout of Mule fans.
Went with my gut on picks last week, that's why I suffer frequent indigestion. Regarding the Pick 'em title a minimum number of games would probably be the standard, same as batting and scoring titles. Probably not critical unless there's a big prize I didn't hear about, it's just fun to try and get them right.
My picks this week,

Dickinson
F&M
Gettysburg
Johns Hopkins
Susquehanna (have to keep believing)

"Susquehanna bounces back to trounce Juniata as expected."

Don't know if it was expected based on week one, but it certainly was a mismatch on Saturday.

Gettysburg over JHU
Ursinus over Juniata
Catholic over Mcdaniel
Leb Val over Moravian
Susquehanna over Muhlenberg
