For desertraider: A few posts from MUC fans.

Came back a little sooner than I thought I would.  I know that stats are just stats and "that's why they play the games on Saturdays," but just glancing through who RMC has played this year and looking at what they've done, I have a hard time seeing this one stay close.  Just a few stats to throw out there on which I base my argument.Points Per GameRMC- 27.9MUC- 46.8Points Allowed Per GameRMC- 24MUC- 6Total OffenseRMC- 348 yardsMUC- 541 yardsTotal DefenseRMC- 335.2 yardsMUC- 158 yardsBy no means am I saying don't support your team and don't be proud of winning your conference and making the playoffs, I am merely giving my opinion of this week's upcoming game.

I was holding back on my prediction because I didn't want the entire room to hate me until at least Thursday, but oh well.  Here it goes anyway.  I still don't think I'm going out on a limb here...

Mount- 66
RMC- 0

RMC might get a junk touchdown in the fourth, that's where half of the points against Mount have come this year, but I like the chances of a shut-out.

Edit: half the points against Mount

I'll be honest, I'm counting RMC out.  Not out of any disrespect to your team or program, but rather in awe of what LK has managed to build at Mount.  I know that "on any given day, any team can win."  After following Mount football for a long time, it seems that those days are few and far between.  RMC fans should be excited.  If you can't get excited about trying to knock off the top program in the nation in the playoffs, then there's no reason to be a fan.  Forgive me if I'm a little confident (cocky?), but you'll understand my confidence when you see this team in action.Last thing, I appreciate the vote of confidence in this year's squad, but Mount has only 9 national titles, not ten.

Zak Thornton is a game time decision.

Hey look, to all the MUC fans posting on this site.  We all understand that the Raiders are a great team year in and year out and that they are "The Program" in D3.   So there is no need to continue to educate us about what little chance RMC has on this Sat.  We are all aware.
While the RMC players and coaches are excited about competing against the best they are very aware of the challenge in front of them.  This is the first and maybe the only opportunity these players will have to participate in the NCAA playoffs so let them enjoy the moment.  Maybe some day RMC will build a program where post season play and national championships are the norm and not the exception and their fans can post how great they are and how the opposing team doesn't have a chance.  Oh by the way, do any of you MUC fans have anything to do with the program being so good?   :D

According to D3 Football.com Pod Cast.  RMC would get the atomatic bid.

The defense they run is a 3-3-5  which your linebackers have to be fast and really athletic ,your 5  DBs must really, really be fast to cover and support the run.  A friend of my family son plays there on offense and he said they have a DB that runs a 4.46 forty that only plays on special teams and another that runs a 4.50 and does the same .  Up front you must have two ends that are great and a nose that can handle anything in the middle! The backers and DBs must really be able to run in that  defense.

What team is this?

Who the heck are you.  JacketLawyer was looking for an account of the game.  Thanks for your support.

I was at he R-MC Kings game.  While the weather and turnovers contributed to the loss, from what I observed they got away from their identity; running the ball, contolling the clock, stopping the run and creating turnovers.  The first few series they ran the ball well and then would attempt to pass in short yaradge situations or on first down.  A few examples:

First series:

R 1-10 R38   RANDOLPH-MACON drive start at 14:50 (1st).
R 1-10 R38   Zak Thornton rush for 7 yards to the RMC45 (Victor Sierra).
R 2-3  R45   Zak Thornton rush for 5 yards to the 50 yardline, 1ST DOWN RMC (Matt
               Rhodes).
R 1-10 R50   Zak Thornton rush for 8 yards to the KINGS42 (Matt Rhodes).
R 2-2  K42   Brandon Braner pass incomplete to Rod Nelson.
  R 3-2  K42   PENALTY KINGS Encroachment 5 yards to the KINGS37, 1ST DOWN
               RMC.
R 1-10 K37   Zak Thornton rush for 9 yards to the KINGS28 (Victor Sierra), PENALTY RMC
holding 10 yards to the KINGS38.
  R 1-11 K38   1st and 11.
R 1-11 K38   Zak Thornton rush for 8 yards to the KINGS30 (Ryan Nelson).
R 2-3  K30   Brandon Braner sacked for loss of 10 yards to the KINGS40 (Mike Lovett).
R 3-13 K40   Brandon Braner pass complete to Rod Nelson to the KINGS36, fumble forced by

First series 2nd QTR

R 1-10 R36   Start of 2nd quarter, clock 15:00.
R 1-10 R36   Zak Thornton rush for 6 yards to the RMC42 (Tom Tulaney).
R 2-4  R42   Zak Thornton rush for 4 yards to the RMC46, 1ST DOWN RMC
               (ChristianBecker).
R 1-10 R46   Brandon Braner pass incomplete to Rod Nelson.
R 2-10 R46  Zak Thornton rush for 6 yards to the KINGS48 (Justin Zlotek).
R 3-4  K48   Brandon Braner pass incomplete to Earl Peoples.
  R 4-4  K48   Ben Keyser punt 32 yards to the KINGS16, downed.

second series 2nd QTR

R 1-10 R21   RANDOLPH-MACON drive start at 03:15 (2nd).
R 1-10 R21   Zak Thornton rush for 7 yards to the RMC28 (Craig Geibert).
R 2-3  R28   Brandon Braner rush for 7 yards to the RMC35, 1ST DOWN RMC (Craig
               Geibert).
R 1-10 R35   Brandon Braner pass incomplete to Rod Nelson.
R 2-10 R35   Brandon Braner rush for 8 yards to the RMC43 (Shane McNamara;Brian Mitros).
  R 3-2  R43   Timeout Randolph-Macon, clock 01:28.
R 3-2  R43   Zak Thornton rush for 2 yards to the RMC45, 1ST DOWN RMC (Craig
               Geibert;Tom Tulaney).
R 1-10 R45   Zak Thornton rush for 5 yards to the 50 yardline (Mike Lovett).
R 2-5  R50   Zak Thornton rush for 4 yards to the KINGS46 (Craig Geibert).
  R 3-1  K46   Timeout Randolph-Macon, clock 00:34.
R 3-1  K46   Brandon Braner pass intercepted by Matt Rhodes at the KINGS30, Matt Rhodes
return 13 yards to the KINGS43 (Zak Thornton).

Defensivley the right side of the defense was getting destroyed.  That is where Kings had most of their success running the ball.

If you look back on last season R-MC created a lot of turnovers and they capitilized on many of those.

All that being said it's very difficult to overcome five turnovers( four fumbles, one int)

While they only lost 4 starters on each side of the ball it is apparent they were key starters.

There is a lot of season left and hopefully they can get back to what made them successful last year.

IMO, why Macon has been so successful; they take care of the ball, and they have a bend but don't break defense.

Zak Thornton has touched the ball 319 times so far this season, and has coughed it up only twice. That's pretty darn good (and lucky).

If you look at the stats, they are very one dimensional. But nationally, not even that impressive.

They are 45th (out of 231) in rushing offense and 193rd in passing offense. But being ranked 27th in turnover margin is the key.

And defensively, sure, they're 32nd in points allowed, but they still give up 317 yards a game (81st, nationally).

Although five of their eight wins were by 12 points or less, they haven't had an opponent score more than 25 on them all year. And seven of their nine opponents didn't score more than 17.

They've played in a lot of close games, which certainly helps them. But it will be interesting to see against H-SC (or even a playoff game or two) how well  the Jackets play if/when they get down by a couple scores. Only three times have they been losing during a game by a touchdown (twice against Frostburg, once against Hopkins). Never have they been down by more than that.

I think that Sydney will get up by a couple scores and R-MC won't be able to counter it. R-MC hasn't faced this creative of a team all year. The best offenses they have faced -- Guilford and Bridgewater -- are also very one dimensional teams, so it was easier to prepare for. H-SC, however, will throw a lot of different looks at them.

My prediction; H-SC 31, R-MC 20

I'm rarely correct (see ODAC pick 'em), but I nearly nailed this game.

The Jackets got down 14-0 and 21-7, and never recovered. They "bent" and gave up a bunch of yards (410), but also "broke" and allowed 31 points.

Amazing that neither team had any turnovers. And Sydney finally held Thornton under 100.

Congrats to both teams on two great years! I sure hope the Tigers will make some noise in the playoffs (not likely, IMO).

Now the question becomes who wins POTY? As great as Simpson's numbers are (1635 all-purpose yards, 27 total TDs), I can't see the conference awarding it to him since he was suspended for the first three games. And Guilford losing four ODAC games takes Vogelbach out of the mix. I'd say it'll come down to these three:

-Drew Smith (H-SC WR) - 102 receptions, 1460 receiving yards, 8 TDs
-Phillip Carter (BC RB) - 1201 rushing yards, 19 rushing TDs
-Corey Sedlar (H-SC QB) - 3118 yards, 23 TDs, 66.7 pass comp %

The telling stats on this game are total offensive plays-HSC 83 RMC 45 and time of possession HSC 39:14 RMC 20:46 with the 4th Qtr being HSC 13:12 RMC 1:48.  They kept the RMC offense of the field (RMC's game plan was to do that to HSC). Also, all season long RMC lived off of turnovers.  HSC had zero turnovers.
I spoke to the HSC coach after the game and he is a class act and was very humble in victory.  Congrats to HSC and best of luck in the playoffs.

Marty vs Pedro is one-sided (50-16, 50-17 and 46-21) in favor of HSC. Macon has improved, but not enough. I say both teams score what they average for the season and HSC wins 38-28.
You could say that about every ODAC coach vs Pedro before this year.

Why has Simpson only played in six games?

I have no idea who Randolph-Macon is scrimmaging.

Hopefully we're working on keeping our national # 11 ranking as a party school going, though. ::)

They are scimmaging North Carolina Wesleyan College
