Region 3 men's basketball / Re: MBB: Liberty League

Tedisco played ball?  That's neat - I met him one time when I worked at a local newspaper and he came up for a meet and greet.

Tedisco was a great basketball player, incredible shooter and very quick off the dribble, Capital District tournament back in the early 70's was a highlight of Small College basketball, great coaches too - Albany coached by Dick Sauers, RPI coached by Bill Kalbaugh, Siena coached by Bill Kirsch, and Union Coached by Gary Walters, who went on to become AD at Princeton.  I believe Hopefan was an asst at RPI in those days.

Haven't posted in a while.  Hopefully the video will be up.  Potsdam wins it's 3rd game of the year at Plattsburgh on a 35 foot bank shot by Soph G Nick Cortez as time expired.  Plattsburgh had taken the lead with 4 secs left, and Cortez drove the length of the court and took a heave that banked in for the W. Cortez' buzzer beater capped a 27 point outing including 6x7 from long range.

Quote from: Greek Tragedy on November 13, 2024, 12:31:47 PMUnfortunate that conference does have to meet up in a noncon matchup. They could've just swapped 1st night's opponents to avoid that.
That would have made good sense, esp considering the hosts lost the "championship" game.

Quote from: WUPHF on May 05, 2024, 10:31:06 AMIt will be interesting in subsequent seasons as with the portal becoming such a part of life in NCAA basketball, might more and more freshmen, sophomores and juniors go looking to upgrade their playing time.

Assuming they qualify academically, I can see better players at lower tier schools also looking to upgrade the experience by moving to a "better" [academically or athletically] team.

Quote from: nescac1 on April 03, 2024, 01:05:23 PMJust curious, what is driving all this movement into and out of SUNYAC?  Is is geography?  Financial incentives?

I think it's a bunch of things.  New Paltz and Oneonta don't have hockey, the other SUNYAC schools do.  Athletics budgets [other than coaches salaries & facilities] at SUNYAC schools are funded through student fees, many SUNY schools are suffering from lower enrollment, and operating deficits (and have been for a while).  New York State has way too many colleges for the current population.  It would seem the University Centers [Stony Brook, Buffalo, Binghamton, Albany] which are all D-I, have been told to do whatever it takes to keep their enrollments stable, and those schools are located in cities, where most of the SUNYAC schools are in small cities or towns.  At the D-3 level, SUNY has one school in the AMCC, three in the Empire 8, four in the Skyline, two in the NAC, and ten in the SUNYAC.  Would be a pretty easy move to plug Cobleskill in to replace New Paltz and stay at 10 schools.

Bowman at Oswego appears to be out of eligibility.

He played 27 games at St. Rose [D2]in 2019-20
He played 6 games at St. Rose [D2] in 2020-21 [team played 7]
He played 24 games at St. Rose [D2] in 2021-22
He played 29 games at Oswego in 2022-23
He played 29 games at Oswego in 2023-24

He was honored at Senior Day.

Quote from: thebear on March 02, 2024, 08:17:41 AMI saw Farmingdale over Stevens, Penn St- Harrisburg over Hood, Whitworth over Cal Lutheran, Texas Dallas over Trinity (TX), Whitworth over Cal-Lutheran as upsets; 4 top 25 teams [Elmhurst, DeSales, Cal Lutheran. Trinity (TX)] knocked out the first night.

Interestingly, computer ratings/rankings do not see Farmingdale's win over Stevens as an upset. D3 Datacast, Massey and D3 Bubble all had Stevens as the underdog in that matchup.
I just looked and D3 Datacast Had Farmingdale at 77 and Stevens at 32.  D3 hoops in their poll had Farmingdale at #45 and Stevens as #26 in ORV.  I also noticed the NCAA listed Stevens as Home and Farmingdale as Away, which i've been told means the higher seed is the home team in neutral site game.  Regardless nice win for Farmingdale.

The scariest pods appear to be the John Carroll pod with Calvin, & Elmhurst, and the Oswego pod with DeSales & Williams.  at least two ranked teams are going home from each of those the first weekend.

Sparks was honored at their last home game.

He's been at Oswego for 4 full hoop seasons and 5 years of classes.

New Paltz just won at Oswego, so the Lakers are a likely bid thief.

I saw Oswego play this weekend, very deep and very talented.

I think there is little separation between John Carroll, Calvin, and Oswego for the #1 spot after this weekend's upsets.

From what I saw Oswego's second five is a very good D-III team.

Oswego plays CWRU and Pomona-Pitzer in Vegas at year end which should add some clarity.

I don't think the SUNYAC has an official preseason poll, so for those in the know, what would it look like?

Based on my reading of the tea leaves and returning rosters, I would venture that
1 Oswego - Loaded team who defeated the #1 ranked team in the Sweet Sixteen.
2. Brockport, lots returning, would like to make their last year in the SUNYAC a success.
3,4,5 Some combination of Cortland, New Paltz, Oneonta, - looking at rosters they seem tightly bunched.
6, A food fight amongst Buffalo State, Fredonia, Geneseo, Potsdam, Plattsburgh for one playoff spot, again 5 teams all closely bunched.
7-10 whoever from above that doesn't get the 6 seed.  All these teams have significant roster changes.

Obviously they're not in the SUNYAC anymore but those that recall SUNY Poly (fka SUNYIT) will remember the name Kevin Grimmer, he was synonymous not only with their MBB program but all Wildcats athletics. Apparently he passed away on Monday, too young. RIP.

Kevin was a Utica native and an 1980-81 NABC All-American at Hamilton College in his playing days.
