As it turns out, Cascione doesn't have another year of eligibility, so he's done.  (Don't know the details, but heard reliably that was where that landed.)  So looks like Bellamy and Germiniero will battle it out...

Here's my take on Union's skill position players for the upcoming season. The Dutchman are surely going to miss the tenacity and break away threat of Connor Kinzelmann. Keep in mind though that he missed considerable time last year and was hampered by leg injury. That opened the door for FY Travis Demby and an out of nowhere Brett Waller (he appears on no roster) to get the job done. Demby, Waller and maybe Derek Khnaizir will be given first crack to win the job this fall. Look for one of the six incoming frosh RBs to also have a big impact .  At tightend the leading returnees are Pat Ryan and Ryan Schaenman. I hope new OC Kevin Trigonis throws to the position more.  The kicking game graduated both punter and place kicker so who knows? I hope special teams won't be a detriment.
NOW... about the Quarterback.  Nick Cascione has one year of eligibility left and I'm assuming he's coming back. He's started the majority of games the last three seasons. Last year's backup Will Bellamy should be itching to play and there's John Germinerio ( brother of Brockport standout Joe) who deserves a chance. Cascione is certainly capable though he struggles at times. Dlip I have NO IDEA how this shakes out. I can say that coach Behrman must have confidence in what he's got since he only recruited one QB.

9-6 Union over Western NE at the half.  Pretty even half off football, no one has the clear upper hand.  Union's been able to run the ball, especially out of the wild cat.  The Union D mostly kept the WNE offense in check, except for a short TD drive off a blocked punt deep in their own territory.  But WNE clearly has a lot of firepower and seems to have the potential to catch fire at any point.

Speaking of firepower, WNE gets the ball to start the 3Q, drives for a TD, Union throws a pick on its first offensive play of the half, WNE drives for another TD.  19-9 WNE over Union halfway through the 3rd.

What's the E8 crew's take on Hobart vs IC this wkd?

So I'm not the E8 crew but I find this game a total mystery.  Ithaca's D was very stout against my Dutchmen.  But it'll be the pass defense that will matter, and I have no idea how Ithaca's passing D is because Union's passing attack has been so tepid to date.  (I did notice that Ithaca tended to send pressure ALOT - that'll only go one of two ways against Sweeney).  Same goes for the Ithaca O - they were anemic against Union, but then again Union might have a very, very stout D ( as in, the best Union D in 15  or 20 years...)

Very disappointed that Union could not pull out a win today losing 14-9 to Ithaca. They largely outplayed Ithaca, especially in the second half BUT found a way to lose. A fumble and scoop to the house was Ithaca's ONLY really positive play in the second half but it was enough. Union had numerous chances with great field position all day but couldn't make enough big plays.
Utes...My turn to clarify. Above is my initial post minutes after the game. Anything I said later was in response to Eagle322 who is the one who first said that the Union staff "knew they should have won the game". I largely agreed with Eagle.  OK, after watching the video of the Carn fumble I admit there is no question it WAS a fumble. Nice play by Ithaca. The "scoop and score" "gave" them the total of 14 points, much like the final horn "gave" Ithaca the 14-9 victory. However a fumble IS often commonly referred to as a "give away" so I'll stick with that.  As to Frank Rossi's post I have utmost respect for Frank's work with Union football and mostly agree with his take. I don't however, think Union did anything unusual or tricky either offensively or defensively so I don't really see Ithaca's struggles as being linked to not being able to see game films. I just came away with the opinion that the Bombers have much work to do to be competitive in the E8. I'm looking forward to seeing what WNEU will bring this Saturday and I'm optimistically predicting a 23-20 Union victory.

I also saw nothing in Union's schemes that suggest absence of game film had a total impact - they did nothing fancy. To me, Union's improvement seemed mostly the product of much greater discipline (almost no penalties), vastly better execution on defense, special teams and even offense, and more patient, efficient play calling.  (Unlike past years, they patently ran the ball and threw safe passes, notwithstanding all the 3 and outs in the first half.  That kept game possession time even, avoided needless interceptions and sacks that would have put us in a hole, let the defense rest, and allowed to begin physically wear down Ithaca in the second half.)  Overall talent level seemed the same.
